what's one thing your muse has too much of but can't stop buying?

Shirts. He never was one to have more than like, two of everything. He had two pairs of trousers, two pairs of shirts, his uniform, two pairs of boots etc.

But since coming to New Haven and finding a liking in comfortable clothing - so big shirts and trousers - none of them very tight on him, he'd started his own little collection for sure. He likes shirts with motives on them, so when he sees one he likes, knowing he has like twenty at home already, he'll still pick it up.

HEADCANON: A MIND INFLUENCED BY THE CRUCIATUS CURSE

the lonbottoms’ case is considered the most atrocious and infamous in modern history, and canon wise, they are always brought up as example of what happens you if you manage to survive a prolonged exposion of the curse.

what happens outside: it begins with a sense of fatigue, heavy tingling of the whole body. in most cases the victim passes out and then, inevitably, dies; if treated in time, the victim could survive but face permanent brain damage such as memory loss, incapacity to speak and sudden changes of mood. in other cases the victims doesn’t pass out, but slowly begins to be confused about time and space, or the reason behind their current behavior/situation they’re facing. finally, the victim slowly begins to forget personal information and relationships, until the mind breaks at the point that it remains nothing but a human shell. 

what happens inside: the effect of the curse on the brain present as if the victim was locked in an empty black room --- no windows, no doors. it feels like walking in a maze, desperately running to find the exit but never quite arrive to it. sometimes something breaks in ( sometimes is an action that sparks something, sometimes it’s a voice ) threatens to make the maze crumble down, and it might be a small moment, but it’s meaningful nonethelles. 

my take ( that also falls into the canon divergent adult verse ): aurors are like our highest “police” forces, like fbi, cia, you name it --- they’re supposed to be trained for situations in which torture is the firts tool used to gain information from them. while i believe that frank and alice suffered trmendously, i also think that they endured and “virtually” fought back like hell to not give in to the curse power --- they had someone to come back to, and that was enough to be as lucid as possible in that situation. i also think that since alice recognizes neville and augusta as people somehow close to her, moves to give neville gum wraps in sign of affection and has tried to speak to him ( even though nothing came out ) her influence under the curse might be mildly lighter than her husband’s --- meaning that with some help ( or a big miracle since i can’t believe nobody has already come up with fix-it for the effects ) she might come to fuction “normally”. yes, maybe she won’t be back to her strong and fierce form of when she was 21, but at least she’d get to be reunited with her son, fight by his side and possibly find a way to get back frank as well.

relationships

due to the fact that we haven't really developed any until recently, i never quite had to dive into the mind of joel + relationships. sure, i've always kinda shipped him with bill and tess, but like before hbo finding either char was impossible and it was even harder to get that 1 tess that existed to feel the same due to the game kinda just implying, ya know? everybody we wrote with was looking for protection, so my joel never quite got to develop the shippy side of him.

that's been changing, so here we go. this'll mix game + show as per usual by now. both portray joel similarly so like, ye.

we meet joel as a workaholic of sorts, the kind of father who's definitely not planned to be a single-dad & who's overwhelmed by the responsibility of raising a child, keeping a roof over their heads, keeping his child happy, making sure his child has everything they need, but loves unconditionally. we meet him needing to be woken by his teenage daughter cause he most likely worked late & collapsed & doesn't hear his alarm in the morning.

we see sarah making breakfast, surely not only because it's his birthday. she makes him drink orange juice 'for his health' and joel forgot to pick up the pancake mix. broken promise, probably one of many. i mean dude has his shirt on the wrong way around. he's so stressed, work never quite goes the way it should & he's barely getting by with the money he does make. he gets home in the night even on his birthday, forgets cake. another broken promise, 2 in 1 actually. cake + being home at 9.

he gives everything he has, but still fails. then sarah dies & it only strengthens that feeling. he had one job, he failed.

fast forward. he said it himself, he joined that group going to boston to protect tommy, not because he wanted to. protector. that's what he sees himself as. enter tess. same thing, only that she doesn't leave him, which is why he opens up to her at least some. again, though, he's the protector. they do share a bed & all, but it's ..distant. joel doesn't want to love, he doesn't allow himself to. partially due to grief still lodged deeply within him, but also simply because he's not used to it. i firmly believe he didn't have anybody since sarah's mother.

he didn't have the time or mental capability. his brain was in protector dad mode. tess loves joel & that's most likely the only reason they get to develop this kind of relationship they had. joel likely didn't see himself as boyfriend or lover. protector. someone hurts her, he goes rambo on them etc. over the years, i think she did manage to open his heart a little bit, but joel is still terrified of caring again, because he knows he'll lose them eventually & that fear is unbearable, so he tries to keep tess at a safe distance emotionally.

ellie is the one who eventually opens his heart to the world. it's her who breaks down that wall he built around himself the night sarah died & that opens joel for a lot of possible future relationships. it's stil not easy, because he does still see himself as protector & that step to 'it's ok to care about others', 'it's ok to want something for yourself' & 'it's ok to let people into your life' takes time & effort, but like...

when joel loves, he does so with all of him. his entire being. his whole-ass fricken' heart. unconditionally. through thick & thin. it's such pure, wonderful love on the side of 'i will murder everybody who looks at you wrong'.

it's the torture scene, i have to talk about it. especially because show-wise, it's the first time we see a glimpse of the old joel shimmer through the old, guilt-ridden joel we meet in the show. he's had so few violent interactions - even less on screen, that we had no idea, other than the stories.

i think it's not too far-fetched to say that after sarah & with the world having ended, there was a lot of rage inside joel (still is). first there was mourning, then rage. people fought over guns, supplies, houses - everything, so joel found a way to vent, let that violent streak within him roam free & do good in the process. keep his brother (later tess, too) safe, keep them fed etc.

everybody with a gun was the soldier who killed sarah, everybody else was out for his brother's head, so it became normal. and it felt good. satisfying. maybe joel has a sadistic side he didn't know of inside him, one that never would've surfaced if not for cordyceps. now it's there & the new way of the world calls to it.

after months, if not years - of doing this & dealing with grief like this, it's just something joel does. it's no a strange concept, hurting others to make himself feel better.

the torture scene.

we've seen him do this before, the map thing. but in a non-violent way. so we see he can do it a different way, if he so chooses. but it's his daughter's life on the line again & joel is no longer the old, guilt-ridden man she met, no. joel's on a mission. they took his child from him & he doesn't know if she's okay or not - knowing the world as it is, she might as well be dead - or worse.

so there is no remorse. joel will do whatever it takes to find her. he's done this before, too. maybe tommy got caught, maybe he just needed intel on ammo stashes, guns, supplies. but he's done this before, for sure.

he enjoys this. we see it. it makes him feel good in a situation in which the alternative is fear. this is revenge. he's been bed-ridden for like what? a week? he's had to rely on ellie to keep him alive, had to watch her worry. all because of them & now they dared barging in & kidnapping his kid. the pain he must've been in, the suffering & for the past days, he's been sure he would die.

but no, he has a job to do, as bill put it so beautifully.

What is the character’s favourite food?

mozarella-stuffed parmesan chicken has got to be silas' favorite food of the new world. coming to new haven, he basically started fresh when it came to cuisine & standards, so he did a lot of experimenting (mostly because of dante, let's be real) and there's a few dishes he enjoys a lot - like lasagna, spanish tortillas and meatloaf from ground beef but his favorite's got to be mozarella-stuffed parmesan chicken they get at a store in new haven, although silas has tried his hand at making it himself, too & it's not been too bad.

Are they good at cooking? How good/bad?

he is. back in willowshire, silas had not been deemed worthy of sindra's servants & cooks, so when sindra wasn't home, which was most of the time, silas was responsible for feeding the cubs & himself. over the years, he learned. in willowshire, while he'd often get food for him & sammy at the tavern or kitchen, he sometimes cooked, too. it was ... simpler in willowshire - a fire, some meat, roasting vegetables etc. but since coming to new haven he's had the chance to explore. he didn't have to, dante introduced him to take-out & delivery service early on, but silas chose to take up cooking for his family again & has come a long way since. he will still get take-out with dante, or go out to eat etc., but they don't rely on the outside to feed their family. he's pretty good at it by now, too.

Do they leave the dishes out?

noooooo way. in house rivera-di-cesare dishes shall always either be thrown into the dishwasher or cleaned immediately. silas will flip if he's got to spend an hour scrubbing off a crust in a casserole three days after he cooked it. he often does dishes himself before going to bed, but the kids will do it for him sometimes. he doesn't ask them to, though.

What kind of food is in their refridgerator?

due to having a little cub & four adults besides him in the house, the fridge is always full. vegetables, eggs, milk, a few microwave dishes in the freezer (or pizza), though silas is not a fan of them & usually puts extra dishes in the fridge for the kids that can't attend dinner. or don't want to. so when remy gets home in the morning from his night shift, he'll find a plate in the fridge with his name on it. same goes for the others, if work or something else gets in the way of dinner time. the fridge mostly holds fresh foods, though & ingredients for cooking & some soda.

Do they cook, eat out or get take-away/delivered food more?

definitely more cooking since silas settled properly & got his hands on some recipes. he has nothing against take-away or delivered food, but he feels like he has very little to give his family, so the one thing he can give them, he will.

what's one memory your muses wishes they could relive over and over?

there .. are a few, but not many.

the most significant up to right now would be taj's first steps. silas was young, insecure, unsure what he was doing or how to raise a child on his own, every day a struggle with the only light in his life that little cub he gave life to. constant worry what he could possibly offer that innocent little life, or which doomed fate he would possibly force him into by giving life to him ...

but then taj took his first few steps for a hug. silas knew that moment that he'd die for him if need be. he knew everything would be okay, because even if he made mistakes, his little boy would be okay. seeing him waddle around on his little legs was the most fulfilling thing he'd ever seen up to then.

How would Joel react if Ellie called him dad? Like it just slipped out without her thinking about it?

//Okay so, since this is directed at me about Joel's reaction, I'll reply for him. ;)

If Ellie was to call him dad at any point in time after the season finale, he'd melt so hard. It would obviously be scary, because it only confirms again that he is responsible for someone again. It would confirm that he is, once again, someone's protector and that someone (Ellie) acknowledges it. It also warms his heart, though, because it means that his feelings for Ellie are reciprocated, because he loves her more than anything in the world (duh).

So, if she did... he'd most likely freeze, stumble over his own words, shuffle and give her the chance to take it back. He'd understand, really and he'd never pressure her. But if she stuck with it? God, he'd be the happiest dad in the world.

sarah’s mother was the love of joel’s life, regardless of the hardships they overcame & the struggles they faced. they were a couple in high school, joel’s first love & honestly, he would’ve stolen the moon for her. they were nervous for sure, becoming parents so young, but joel worked hard to provide for them & despite her parents being against them, joel thought they could live their best life together. it wasn’t the life they had dreamt for, joel had big plans himself, but it would be a great life nonetheless. 

but sarah’s mother saw that differently. shortly after sarah was born, they’d moved into a small apartment downtown, joel was trying hard to make ends meet & bills were piling up ... she decided to leave them to move back to her parents. she left a newborn baby with a young father who worked more jobs than he had hands, but he made it work. 

joel had always had the quiet, handsome stranger vibes - even before he locked himself away from other people mentally. he found ways to either bring sarah to his jobs, or have her looked after & when she was old enough for daycare, he made sure to find the very best for her. joel’s passion & determination rose him up the ranks fast & by the time sarah went to pre-school, they moved into their first house. it wasn’t perfect, but joel worked  every day after the job on turning it into their forever home. he never got to tell sarah what truly happened to her mother, all she knew was that it was just them. he didn’t want her to grow up thinking she wasn’t enough, so he kept the true story to himself. he never expected to lose her this early.

for one, joel has ptsd. i think that’s been talked about a lot in the past, we meet him with nightmares of sarah dying & surely the time he spent as a hunter, but i think that post tlou1 the majority of his nightmares were about ellie finding out, ellie leaving, ellie dying & worst of all, ellie hating him. after the year they traveled together he’s become so, so fixated on her almost nothing else matters to him. he refuses to speak of those he lost, he’s really closed-up & doesn’t really let anybody in. 

some have mentioned it already, but like..

he kept the mirror in the bathroom downstairs, but took off the mirror upstairs where he clearly spends the majority of his time (his bedroom & hobby room are up there) in an otherwise almost perfectly decorated house. he didn’t show it (it’s joel we’re talking about), but he clearly struggled hardcore. guilt was eating him up to the point where he couldn’t stand looking at himself anymore & i think the trigger for that was after he found ellie at the hospital again when she ran off. her anger, her silent treatment ... it was too much, it confirmed what that little voice in the back of joel’s head had been whispering all along.
