Younghoon X Reader
[A/n: This is based off of a dream (nightmare) I had. Except for the ending, I wanted a happy ending. (I debated not publishing but alas, here we are)]
------
You had always had a crush on Younghoon. It was something your best friends knew. The problem was you couldn’t bring yourself to tell him. You were just lucky because he was close with your friend group. Which consisted of your two best friends, one of their brothers, and Younghoon, his best friend. The newest addition to your group is your friend’s boyfriend. After a few hangouts he quickly grew close to the five of you, and now after a month of aligning everyone’s schedules, you're finally hanging out again. In your heart, it was like everything was falling into place with your best friend having a crush on your Maria’s brother and you having a crush on Younghoon. It felt like it all the puzzle pieces were coming together.
Jayjay picks you, Haeun, and Maria up, and you see the two others already in the car. You wave at them through the window, open the van door, and roll your eyes as you lock eyes with Jiseok, “Looks like I’m stuck with the back, huh?” He laughs, “Yeah, this time, we’ll sit in the back on the ride home.” You shake your head, “Gross.” As you enter the car, you greet Younghoon and Jayjay before slipping into the back. Haeun climbs in beside you and fixes the chair behind her. Maria shuts the door after sitting down, and Jayjay takes you guys to the amusement park. You whisper to Haeun as you sit in the back, “Damn, too bad we weren’t in the middle we’d have the perfect view of-” She shushes you, “I think someone is listening.” She glares over at Jiseok, who has his head slightly turned. You shake your head, “Of course he is. But you know what I was saying.” She nods, and you both huff at Jiseok. On the way there, the six of you make the gameplan of all the rides you wish to ride, “Since it’s going to be hot when we get there, should we try to hit the waterpark side more?” You all agree, and after getting checked in, that’s where you all head.
---
You don’t know how it happened because you swore everyone was following closely behind you. But suddenly, you were swept up into the crowd of the log ride line with your friends nowhere in sight behind you. You gulp as you try to get out of the crowd. It isn’t until you’re on the platform for the ride that the crowd dissipates. You spot your friends about twenty people down from you. And tell the ride operator that you’ll wait for your friends to catch up. And they let you, letting someone else up in your place. Thankfully, in the hot air, you could feel a slight mist when the breeze would come while you wait.
Haeun reaches you first, “We thought we lost you!” You laughed and shook your head, “No, I just got stuck in the crowd.” You watch as the other four pass you two, and you two don’t say anything until they do. And you ask, “Do you want to ride with me… Or?” Both of you were hoping the other didn’t want to ride alongside. She whispers, “I wanted to be with Jayjay.” And you blush as you nod, “I wanted to be with Hoonie.” She grins, and you both head over. You went over and began to ask him if he’d mind if you rode with him. You had gotten the words, “Would yo-” out of your mouth before they died in your throat as Haeun had spoken for you. He looked at you but then blatantly looked over at Haeun to hear what she had to say. She had said something along the lines of asking him to ride with you. And he grinned at her before nodding, turning to you with a small smile gracing his features. And it felt like your heart deflated. You had his attention briefly, but he only saw her.
It was like you were the puzzle piece that no longer fit. Nothing was falling into place, and you dreamed it all up, but you managed a small smile back. You stand beside Younghoon, waiting for the ride together. You look behind him to watch Haeun ask Jayjay. And you see him give her that same look Younghoon had. That all he sees is her. No one looked at you like that. No one ever had. Why would this time be any different? You never thought you’d experience this kind of heartbreak again. You thought it was all working out for you. And now, you desperately wanted to leave after this torture of a ride ended, and cry to your pillow about it. You look further over to see Maria and Jiseok kissing, and you can’t even get a word out of your mouth to talk to Younghoon. But you don’t have to, he says something first, “Were you okay back there? I saw you got stuck in the swarm, and none of us could get to you before you were already halfway in the line.” You nod, “Yeah, I was a little nervous, but I was glad to see you guys.” He laughs, “Yeah, that makes sense. We were glad to see you up on the platform.” You let out a small laugh, nodding at what he had said.
Everything you planned to say when you had a moment alone fizzled out on your tongue when you caught his stare at one of your dearest friends. It wasn’t that you were jealous of her. You never could be, but it was like you were a little kid again, watching your first crush kiss someone else. Your life evolved since then, but it was as though you were reliving that dreaded memory. But now, it felt worse. The guy of your dreams only sees your childhood best friend. It was worse than you feared. You hold back your tears, but you so desperately want to bawl your eyes out, call your mom, and eat a pint of ice cream. But none of that was possible. So, you would have to wait until you were home to cry into your pillow about it.
The log rolls up, and everyone gets up from their ride as they tell the six of you to get on. You watch as your friends get on, and in your periphery, you can see Jayjay guiding Haeun with his hand on the small of her back. And further from them, you can see the two lovebirds wrapped up in each other, easing themselves onto the ride. But you're just standing beside Younghoon, nothing physical. Just side by side, and you assure yourself it was better for your heart after that adoring stare. He gets on first, and you follow, sitting beside him, trying to keep as much distance as possible. And for some reason, you couldn’t get the seatbelt to click in, and it was pissing you off. You couldn’t do this simple thing? Tears start welling up in your eyes from more than frustration before Younghoon whispers, “I got it.” He takes it from your hands and easily clicks it in place. And before you can say thank you, the workers check the belts and tighten the two of you to the seat. When they move away, you thank Younghoon softly, and he shrugs. It was no big deal to him. You were his friend, after all, never to be anything more.
And the announcer goes, “Alright, prepare for the giant plunge!” Younghoon throws his arms up, Woo-hooying, and you raise your arms a little, giving out a small woo-hoo as it heads over before starting its descent, and you end up screaming. And so does Younghoon, and you laugh at each other. The water splashes over the log and right onto both of you. It was like the big splash aimed at both of you, and you both ended up getting the full brunt. You two look at each other in shock, soaked like wet dogs, you end up laughing at each other's appearances. And you forget your worries for a moment.
It makes its way back up the tracks, and when you get off, you collect your things from the deposit box. You follow Younghoon down the ramp, both of you dripping water everywhere with each step on the concrete. As you look down at your soaked shoes, you hear, “What do you say we go for a run to get dry?” You look up at him and ask, “Huh?” He holds his hand out to you and goes, “They’ll catch up to us! Come on!” You warily put your hand in his and he pulls you along before the two of you are fully sprinting further and further from the log ride. He finds a bench and leads you both to it, slowing your pace. You both collapse onto it. And you giggle, exhausted, not expecting to run after such a cooling ride, especially when dryers were everywhere. You ask him, “Why did you do that?” He smiles, “I thought we should give the lovebirds some time to themselves.” You nod as he reminds you of the very thing you two would never be, “Yeah… It’s a bummer, isn’t it?” He asks, “How so?” You shrug, “We’re puzzles that don’t fit anymore…” He sits forward with his elbows on his knees, looking over at you, “What do you mean?” “We’re both now the only two single ones. And with you liking Haeun and all... we’re pieces that don’t fit-” And he bursts out laughing, landing back against the seat, and you squint at him.
He ceases laughing when he sees the look you’re giving him and asks, “Wait- you really think I like Haeun?” You nod, “Yeah, I saw how you looked at her earlier.” He shakes his head, “She had something encouraging.” You blink at him, and with the fleeting courage you have left. You ask, “Can I ask what Haeun said then?” He nods, and you take in the appearance of his flushed cheeks from running, you assume. And he says, “She said, ‘Now’s your chance.’” And before you can ask him to elaborate on it, he sighs, “There are two problems with that…” He looks down at the bench before looking at you, “Well, I know Jayjay is going to ask Haeun to be his. And I don’t want to share the same special day... The other problem is that we could be unfit puzzle pieces if you don’t like me back.”
You blink, “Jayjay is gonna ask Haeun today?” He nods, and that’s when you process the last bit of the sentence, “Wait, you mean- she- you- You don’t like Haeun?” He laughs, “As a friend. But not in the same light as you.” Your cheeks turn red as you ramble, “I really wanted to ride beside you today, and then I thought you had a crush on Haeun… And like, I was so close to crying back there, and then you fixed my seatbelt….” You start hearing your friends' approaching, and you whisper, “I like you too…” And he whispers, “Maybe next week when you're free, of course… We can go on our first date and make it official then. So, we can have our own anniversary.” You smile, “I’d love to.” He grins at you before you join up with your four friends, no longer dripping wet, to continue enjoying the day together.
You were pieces that fit into the puzzle, just as you always dreamed.
