I'm trying a new post that isn't a mile long.
I'm an underemployed, by choice, single mother trying to balance the needs of my extremely disabled children (and my own disabilities) by being home and available more than 40hrs a week employment would allow, but still working at least part time. Thing is, even working full time wouldn't bring in enough income to support me and my kids. I'd need to juggle 2 full time jobs for that, and with my health and my kids needs, that's just not possible.
I'm short roughly 2k a month. Give or take. Different months have different utilities amounts and other just miscellaneous needs of a house of 4.
But we're short 2k a month.
We're trying to survive 5 months.
That's 10k that i need but just don't have.
I'm hoping by the start of 2023 my 23yo will have a job and can help with rent. I'm hoping my attempt, which I have professional help with, to get my 14yo on ssi will be approved. He qualifies. It's just a matter of getting the government to agree. I'm hoping by like July my divorce will be final and I'll have some sort of child support.
I just need to survive until then.
My big gofundme goal is the 10k. But people aren't donating there. I'm getting PayPal donations. Woo! No fees! Here is my PayPal!
I'm taking this one small goal at a time. I have 3 goals a month. Two paydays (8th and 23rd) and rent in the first of each month. Before a payday I calculate about how much I'll be short. And i need literally all of my rent supported by kindness. I've raised enough to cover all my needs for August. So now I'm working on September rent. Rent is 1468$ a month but i have a 4 bedroom, house with a great yard in a safe neighborhood, and great schools. And my landlord is on the ball with repairs. Including major repairs in an old house. So I figure out rent one month at a time.
Anyway I've collected part of rent for September, so this post is focused on figuring out the rest of it.
Every dollar adds up and is one dollar less i need to panic about.
Reblogs are essential. I'm literally begging you to reblog. Please.
200/1468$
Ugh. And ignore my deadname. I'm Max. And I'll do anything for my kids. Anything.
I'll update every 2-3 days so this doesn't get a mile long. I mean, should I go way over, it'll go towards the difference of September paychecks.

help a disabled queer fix their car this pride month (please!!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Me (left) and my cute cat Cosmo (right) for attention
I am trying to raise $1500 to fix the transmission on my car, as it's currently undriveable. I have been out of work since early February due to a drunk driver rear-ending me while he was going 60mph. My family is helping me as much as they can, but it's going to take months to scrape this kind of money together without help, and until then I'm totally dependent on others being available when I have doctor's appointments. I haven't been able to go to physical therapy as often as I'm supposed to because of it, and I'm in a lot more pain because of it.

(If I happen to get incredibly lucky and get more than my goal, that money will go towards getting a new pair of glasses, since mine have been broken and held together by glue for two years now! TT-TT)
If you can’t give, please consider reblogging this post.
Thank you for reading!I hope you have a lovely day <3
More detail below the cut if you want it:
The Car
The transmission on my car is failing, and I can't drive it without fear that it'll give out any moment. There have already been a few scary moments where I thought I was going to be stuck in the middle of the road. I was able to get to the mechanic and get a quote, I need $1500 to fix the issue. (And that was before a second issue popped up on the way home, so it’s possible it’ll be more.)
Where I live, it's impossible to get anywhere without a car, so I'm really stuck and relying on the kindness of others to get me to my doctor's appointments, since I also can't afford taxis, plus Uber/Lyft don't service around here. This has already caused issues, as I've had to cut back on my physical therapy appointments due to not being able to get to them, and I've been doing a lot worse since then.
My Health & Monetary Situation
I've been unable to work since early February, as I've been recovering from a major accident, where I was rear-ended by a drunk driver. The car I had then was completely totalled; thankfully his insurance paid out just enough to get another cheap, used car. I've been dealing with major pain and health issues since. Pain and spasms in my hips and legs make it difficult to stand, sit, or walk for any amount of time. Multiple vertebrae throughout my spine are out of place, which cause a ton of constant pain and unpredictably variable numbness that makes my arms and hands useless when it happens.
My work prior to the accident involves a lot of lifting and carrying, as well as repairs that require full control of my hands, so I haven't been able to return to it. I've actually picked up a new job remotely tutoring due to monetary needs, but it doesn't offer much in the way of hours and is difficult with the on-and-off brain fog and fatigue I've been experiencing since the accident. I'm in the process of being assessed for post-concussive syndrome because of that and new difficulties with language & numbers (which are driving me up the wall, I love writing and now I have to really work at it. This thing took me multiple days to write out when normally it would've taken me about half an hour.)
My credit cards are all maxed out from my last health crisis in 2021 and my credit score is too low to get another credit card right now. I'm just barely scraping by on lost wages from insurance and help from my family. Unfortunately, they can't support me any more than they already are, as we’re all straddling the poverty line and live in areas with high costs of living. I do have a civil suit pending against the man who hit me, but I don't expect that to resolve for at least a few months.
Thank you so much if you took the time to read all that. I really hope you consider donating -- even a dollar will help! Whether you donate or not, please consider sharing, it would really help me out. I hope you have a wonderful day! <3 To reward you for reading all that, have another cat pic :3

Economic Aid for Medical Expenses to Be Paid by the Patient
Fighting a disease involves physical, emotional and mental effort. Unfortunately, it also involves an economic effort, often a huge one. Not all expenses are covered by the National Health System and there are not many people in Italy who can count on private insurance. According to the Veronesi Foundation , the cost of cancer patients is 5 billion every year .
If you are wondering how to pay off your medical expenses related to out-of- pocket expenses, know that you are not alone. There are several resources to help you get emergency financial assistance so you can focus on what matters most to you - the journey to your recovery.
What are out-of-pocket expenses?
Out of pocket expenses are medical expenses that are not covered by the NHS, or by private insurance.
Although in Italy the state offers many treatments or at subsidised prices, sometimes the long waits and the urgency force citizens to pay for private visits or medicines not covered by the NHS out of their own pockets. Also according to the Veronesi Foundation, cancer patients spend more than double, compared to 2012, on specialist visits and reconstruction interventions.
Resources to help you pay for out-of-pocket medical care expenses
We will guide you through each resource listed below so that you can find the best solution for your needs.
1. Crowdfunding for medical expenses
Many have turned to crowdfunding to combat heavy medical bills. Medical bills fundraising allows you to quickly and easily ask for community support to help you reduce your medical bills debt burden. Use our crowdfunding guide for medical expenses to get started.
Online fundraising is gaining momentum as it allows people to raise money for whatever they need, including medical bills. Starting a GoFundMe campaign takes just five minutes and using our fundraising platformwill allow you to keep more of your donations. There are no application or income requirements, so you can start raising money for medical bills right away.
Find out how others have avoided debt for medical expenses thanks to crowdfunding
All together for Deborah
Deborah is a young woman who begins to feel pain in her breasts after giving birth to her second daughter. She initially thinks she has mastitis, then she is prescribed antibiotics. The pain does not go away and she undergoes all the checks from which it is discovered that she has a breast tumour of 5 centimetres. In addition to this she is also diagnosed with lung metastases. She undergoes a mastectomy and they give her several types of chemotherapy, but sadly her cancer does not stop. Her only hope is to go to Tel Aviv to try innovative and very expensive treatments. This is why she turned to crowdfunding, raising over 60 thousand dollars from more than 700 donors. Her goal is to reach 500,000 dollars, heal herself and see her two children grow up.
Help for Leo
Leonardo is a child who was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a very aggressive bone tumour, while he was in fifth grade. Since then he has undergone 13 multi amputation surgeries. The first lasted 20 hours and was performed by a team of 50 doctors. Not only the operations, the boy also underwent courses of chemotherapy and immunotherapy. For this he needs to follow a physiotherapy course which costs 6000 dollars per month. A figure that the family cannot afford to pay. After the launch of the campaign, many people decided to help Leonardo, donating more than 15,000 dollars in a short time.
2. Nonprofits offer help to pay for out-of-pocket expenses
There are a number of nonprofits that focus primarily on helping people pay for their medical care costs. The four organisations listed below assist those who have insurance but need additional financial help.
The Peter Pan non-profit associationIt has existed for 25 years in Rome to welcome the families of children and teenagers with cancer who come from all over Italy or from other countries to be treated in the capital. It offers 3 structures for a total of 33 residential units, as well as common areas. There are many activities: from workshops to activities with children both in the Big House and in the hospitals.
The Kim associationIt deals with offering protection, reception and hospitalisation to sick children in disadvantaged economic conditions, coming from countries at war or from cities without adequate health facilities. He has been working alongside minors and their families for over twenty years, also carrying out awareness campaigns and dissemination of culture, solidarity and volunteering.
Solidarity medicine An institute that has been operating since 2003 in Rome, but also in other cities, to combat poverty and allow access to treatment even to those who have no means. It offers basic and specialist visits, including some instrumental investigations. In one year (between 2018 and 2019) over twelve thousand people visited their clinics.
The Opera di San Francesco outpatient clinicIt is located in Milan and offers outpatient services and drug administration to those who cannot pay for medical treatment. 200 doctors and 20 nurses work as volunteers. In the structure there are 8 rooms and three dental offices, as well as a counter for prescribed medicines.
3. Government assistance with out-of-pocket expenses
In Italy it is possible to deduct health expenses when filing the tax return. On the Revenue Agency website there is a list of all costs for medical services that can be covered (in part). For example, specialist visits, purchase of over-the-counter medicines (including homoeopathic), specialist visits, physiotherapy, spa treatments, purchase of medical or health devices.
There are also measures to support poverty, in the form of reimbursements or checks, which can also help to pay for medical expenses not covered by the NHS. You can find some information by reading our article "How to fight poverty in Italy" .
Seek help to pay for expensive out-of-pocket medical care expenses
From minor surgeries to major cancer treatments, medical care costs are not cheap and not all of them are covered by the National Health System . If you've run out of other options, to avoid escalating medical bills, crowdfunding can help. See how two young people benefited who were wondering if it is possible to recover from a malignant tumour and in Italy they had lost hope.  We know the situation may seem impossible, but every day we see people successfully use fundraising for medical bills , receiving both financial and emotional support.
By raising funds for out-of-pocket medical care expenses through GoFundMe, you can gain financial independence and focus on your health. Check out GoFundMe's honest reviews to find out what others are saying about fundraising online. Create a fundraiser for medical expenses today.

been feeling like venting, so just some random vents- then afterwards, JSRF ramblings because I just beat that game
turning 29 at the end of the week, not looking forward to it- turning 30 next year terrifies me
mother’s funeral was friday, got that out of the way relatively painlessly (other than having to spend an extra 800 dollars just to bury my sister with her, about $4500 by the end of it
gofundme raised about $2000, other donations about $1300 last I counted (probably higher), so most of it was covered
yesterday my mother’s 70 year old best friend held a party at a bar for my mother’s friends and I was obligated to go, bunch of crazy old women talking like sailors, drinking and smoking pot and laughing about all the drugs they did and all the times they got raped (yeahhhh), the only person I was comfortable around was the best friend. And then the party ends two hours late, we’re getting kicked out of the bar, and this friend falls bending down to grab a picture of my mother that she dropped, smashes her face into the floor, and collapses with a pool of blood under her face, unmoving, right in front of me. I couldn’t get the words out that I’d go and pick the photo up for her before she went to get it, and I regret it
Thankfully, she only had a concussion and a broken nose, she started responding after about a minute of just lying there, but it messed me up, I think.
I’ve been debating if I want to start drinking. I never tried before, mainly because my father was an abusive and violent alcoholic. The other reason is because I’m afraid what I’d do to myself if I had no inhibitions in place, I feel like I’d be very dangerous to myself.
neck has been stiff for two days. Probably slept on it wrong. Also keep feeling like I get different symptoms of covid every so often after exposing myself to the public (that bar was packed with old people who wouldn’t wear masks and had no concept of personal space). Today my throat’s been sore and I can barely breathe.
my boss told me I can go back to work as soon as the funeral’s finished- not sure if I should call her to remind her or wait for her to call me, she texted me last week and I told her the funeral was on friday. But my coworker was also wondering and asked me today, and I didn’t know what to tell her, since my boss doesn’t want me to let her know just yet because of how limited they’re open (three days a week, four hours a day)
relationships are very hard
I’m a terrible person who does the bare minimum to help someone who’s terribly lonely and depressed, and it’s like I’m backed into a corner in desperation from being unable to do anything about it. I’ve caused so much harm to this relationship that I wonder if there’s any way it can survive sometimes
It’s always the case, though- I can’t get myself to do more than the minimum effort it takes, and my social anxiety prevents me from ever initiating anything, which has cost me so many people that I shouldn’t be surprised at this point. And I can feel that awful, selfish bitterness inside of me, that part of my father and my sister that’s in me that I try to suppress, and I hate it.
my diet is going well enough, lost over five pounds since starting it late August. But it’s mostly because I just dislike eating, so eating in portions is easier for me. And then there are days like today, where I just don’t eat at all. Just ate one slice of bread, 30g of peanut butter, and a small cup of ice cream today, and I don’t even feel hungry. Normally I try to get some food in me, but today I’m just too disgusted to even try to make dinner.
My sleep’s also been weird, still. Been going to bed later and later again, but can’t stay asleep. Usually only sleep in bouts of 3-4 hours, then just lay awake until I’m half asleep long enough that I feel the urge to give up and get up. It’s been like that for weeks now, I can’t remember the last full night of sleep I’ve gotten.
In lighter news, finally got back to playing JSRF. Beat it the other night after 24.5 hours of game time, just have a few more challenges left (did everything from Dogenzaka Hill to the Bottom of the Sewage Facility so far), got all graffiti and souls possible before beating the final boss. Played it via emulator (which worked great except for crashing when entering the graffiti selection occasionally) with a Switch Pro Controller, felt really good. I own it and the original Xbox for it, but just am spoiled by a PC experience, I suppose.
The gameplay is great, but the level design leaves a funny taste in my mouth. Aesthetics are worse than JSR for me, while music... it’s tough to say, it’s different than JSR, but really grew on me. Sometimes it felt more like noise (I remember the Sewage tracklist not speaking to me too much at first with the more ambient-ish tracks), but it did grow on me a lot. Baby-T was my Garage theme the entire game, such a great track.
Naganuma’s music in the first game was definitely the weakest of the original’s OST (still good of course), but in Future I feel he really stepped up his game. Teknopathetic is one of my favorite songs in the new OST.
speaking of favorite music, here’s mine from each game:
Bout the City
Dragula
Magical Girl
Miller Ball Breakers
Mischievous Boy
On the Bowl (A.Fargus Mix)
Rock It On
Super Brothers
Yellow Bream
Aisle 10
Baby-T
Birthday Cake
Count Latchula
I'm Not a Model
Like It Like This Like That
Rockin' the Mic
Statement of Intent
Teknopathetic
The Scrappy
(shout outs to Girls from the one JSR CD, haven’t listened to much of the other exclusive songs to it, but Girls was good)
but yeah, my minor gripes with Future
Linear level design was a bit painful (missing a jump and not being able to backtrack a lot was bleh), and the later levels were very painful (the sewage area and the rooftops are come to mind, skyscraper to a lesser extent but I liked the skyscraper one a bit more), but at the same time, they force you to get good, which I can appreciate, so hm. Still, a checkpoint system (especially since there are save points) or unlocking shortcuts would be a bit more convenient, if not entirely necessary.
Not having a way to stop auto-grinding, even if just holding down a trigger or something- the way I latched onto rails especially in the sewage area was painful
Points challenges mainly being “find the special points rail and just spamming Y” on it was a bit odd (mainly for the Jet Techs so far, just five minutes of spamming Y...), but I like how the combos feel in this game, especially X combos to speed up. Has a rhythm that’s hard to explain but just feels natural.
Also street challenges should’ve been explained better in general, had to look up most of the special ones (and glitched out the Shibuya Terminal one many times until realizing the fix was just “hop all over each platform multiple times and hope it counts”, the second one next to the tilted platform specifically for me
Mew/Bis/Rhyth’s redesign still hurts, but you better believe she’s the character I used throughout the entire game after unlocking her
Storywise, I think I like JSR’s take better- Professor K being a neutral party and more amusing/less insulting, Onishima > Hayashi, and the character designs and artstyle I overall prefer from the first game
Felt like it tried to add things that just didn’t really work sometimes (Death Ball comes to mind, though I haven’t messed with Versus yet, the story mission was very easy compared to how they hyped it up), and the boss battles were all... strange. Tagging enemies on that roller coaster level, having to grind up to that one Hayashi boss fight over and over and over, then even moreso for the final boss... never got much use out of targeting enemies, spinning circles around them, or things like the railgrab for high jumps or skidding to slow down for graffiti, either, but maybe they have their uses.
But man, the game did feel fun to play, just frustrating to explore, I think. I still like the idea of making Skatered, even more after playing this game. Maybe I could learn modding, or something...
Oh yeah, also got all the pieces of my costume together (minus some eva foam), we’ll see how that goes. Not looking forward to assembling it, honestly, but I can’t back out now. Main regret I think is the tights, being unable to find striped ones (and the solid ones I bought being a bit too see-through, I should’ve bought a size up maybe). Still not confident enough in my makeup abilities, either.
and one last bit of light news- I finally got my Kuja figure, he’s so beautiful and detailed and I need a good place to put him

We Need Help (Please Read)
My name’s Neigh. I am a person of mental illness (depression and anxiety) as well as possible PTSD and Autism (not officially diagnosed, but I do show prevalent signs). My mom and I are in a very bad living situation. We do not feel safe, and it is for the benefit of our health and well being that we find another place to stay. She also has mental issues like myself; as she has PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Both of us have suffered through abuse and trauma. January 11th of 2019, we moved into a new place. We had just relocated from a 400 sq. ft. apt. that was infested with black mold; something the previous landowner refused to take care of. It was starting to affect our health (so bad that my mom needed an inhaler for the 1st time in her life), so we had no choice but to leave. Upon moving to our current place, we thought things would get better. It didn’t. The property management and realty company has lied to us countless times. People come in and out of the apt. w/o 24 hr notice (as it’s required by law to give notice to tenants) and wake us up at night with startling and jarring loud noise. Property owners lied to our faces denying they were in fact the owners. We went about a week without hot water to shower because of them. In an emergency, they are not reliable if something happens. It is not good for our hygiene and- frankly, our mental health. Anytime we hear a noise, we freeze up in fear that someone is going to come in without our permission; let alone notifying us. They send people to come in after legal working hours (8 AM - 5 PM) and have startled us awake at 10 PM, or even as late as 2:30 AM when we are fast asleep. We’ve had to call the police because a strange woman came in and entered the basement a few weeks ago. Our storage unit located in the basement had its chain broken off, and we’ve reported belongings missing. There are also security cameras INSIDE the house so they can actually watch us do laundry.  As of 3/30/19, a strange man we’ve never seen before in our lives was outside our residence. Yelling into a phone and giving details of the house to the person on the other end. He said in a threatening tone, “Tell them to come out here! Yeah, the house with satellite dishes!” I documented the approx. time he arrived as well as the clothes he was wearing. This creepy and unsettling presence of the strange man is just another reason on the list of things that make us want to leave. The fear and paranoia is so bad here I’m even afraid to check the mail, go down to the basement to do laundry, or even take the garbage out. My mom is even afraid to step out of the house, scared. To make her feel safer I escort her to the car so she can go to work. 3/31/19, we had unexpected visitors. They turned out to be our new neighbors that will live directly above us. We have learned that they are loud and noisy in the evening. Not fair for my Mom who has to get up at 3 AM. Due to our financial issues, bankruptcy will more than likely be filed. We starved for almost two weeks just to give money to a lawyer to try and help us out. We can’t do that again. We’ll starve again. This is a matter of trying to survive. It is necessary that we earn funds to aid us to move out. I can’t work. my depression, anxiety, etc. prevents me from functioning like a normal person. My mom doesn’t get paid overtime, and gets the same amount on her paycheck every time. For right now, I helped my mom set up a PayPal of her own so we can save money there. I currently don’t have a bank account. I REALLY hate to beg but PLEASE if you can donate anything, even if it’s a dollar, it will help us get out of here. It’s a long stretch, but we will need at least $5,000 USD to ensure we can move into a new place to rent so we can pay security deposit, movers, other fees, etc. We hope to move out before summer hits as the temperatures warm up. We are extremely hellbent on getting out of here. We can’t take the paranoia and fear of simply existing in a place we don’t feel welcome.  I have heard of gofundme, but I’ve heard it takes portions of donations, so I am not entirely sure of it. If anyone could confirm/deny if this is a reliable site or even as to what donating sites could help, I would be forever grateful. DONATION LINK IS FOUND HERE I’ve had to ask for help in the past and I really hate to do it again, I’m so sorry. Friends we know irl have turned away from us in a time of need, so the internet community is all I have left to turn to. We are desperate to move out, so PLEASE help us! If you can’t donate please spread this around!

Overwhelming expenses: Please help!
So, some of you folks may know some details about my life situation over the past…well, few years really, but the last year in particular.  Without getting too into it, I’ve been through some pretty significant financial hardship as a result of recurring health problems, being unable to work full-time while dealing with said health problems, and the mountain of debt still bearing down on me from the several years I had no health insurance, among other things.  I’ve managed to barely scrape by and keep myself afloat until I had landed a new job, which I started back in May.  The problem is, I was already pretty damn close to rock bottom again as it was, and the financial recovery is very slow-going.  Most of my paychecks are getting diverted directly into a number of overdue bills that I can’t ignore, and my main checking account still has a few hundred dollars worth of overdrafts which has forced me to deposit my paychecks into a MoneyNetwork account (which then makes accessing my funds a bit of a hassle and subject to extra fees).  There were a number of expenses piling up I was able to put off while I wasn’t working, because I wasn’t working, but now that I have a job to do every workday there are some expenses that I can’t really keep ignoring.  Here’s a short list of some things I NEED sooner rather than later:
Boots: Currently, the only pair of work footwear I own is a pair of boots that are now filled with holes and leak with only the slightest bit of water, I desperately need a new pair.
Slacks: I have two pairs of work slacks.  That’s two, total.  Furthermore, they’re pretty visibly worn, and I could really use some new pairs.
Work shirts: I also have about four shirts that are acceptable to wear to work, I really need some more.
Weather wear: I have basically nothing to wear in the summer when it rains.  I have coats, which are far too thick, and hoodies, which absorb water and are still too thick for summer.  I need a raincoat and an umbrella.  I had an umbrella but it broke toward the end of last year, and I need one that can fit in my bag.  Bear in mind that most of what I do on a work day is outside.
Bike: My bike needs soooooo many things fixed.  I rely on that bike for transportation quite a bit and being able to take it to work does a lot for my general productivity.  Last year I had my driver’s license pulled because I was deemed medically unfit to drive, and that bike has been key in maintaining some semblance of mobility.  Being unable to afford to maintain it, it’s fallen into disrepair and finally became unridable about a week ago, which has made work and getting around my neighborhood significantly harder for me.  The bike needs at least one new tire, a new chain, some other parts here and there, and a general tune-up (which I have neither the parts nor knowledge for).
Transportation: I need to maintain either a hefty balance on my public transit card or at least keep it stocked with passes to get around from site to site while working.  I get reimbursed from work, but it’s usually not the full cost of an actual pay period’s worth of transit.
Car: Despite being currently unable to drive, keeping and maintaining my car is vital.  Since my roommate’s car unexpectedly died last year, it’s become his primary means of transportation, and a necessity since he commutes out of the city for work.  On top of costly regular expenses (payments, insurance) the car needs several repairs which, much like my bike, I’ve been unable to afford.
Food: I’m not the only one in my apartment hitting financial roadblocks.  Money has become tight in general around the household, we recently had to cancel our subscription to Soylent and when we run out in a couple weeks, it will be on me to keep them stocked again.  Soylent has become an integral part of my daily routine, having one for my lunch every day has done a lot of good for me, and overall the cost generally comes out to under $3 per meal.  They still have to be ordered in bulk however, and this new expense was sprung on me a few days ago so I’m very anxious about trying to budget for it on top of everything else.  Furthemore, now that I’ve started working, there’s an expectation of me to contribute to the household’s grocery costs when I have almost nothing as it is.
Meds: The bulk of my healthcare is covered under my employee benefits, and prior to that under Illinois’ Medicaid.  That said, sometimes I still run into copays on my prescriptions that I can’t really afford, which has made things tricky at times.
Surprise expenses: When I first drafted this post, my bike, despite not being in the greatest shape, was still usable.  When I started this job I had a fifth work shirt, but it tore while working my second week on the job.  Because I haven’t had and still don’t have the money to replace or fix things as they’ve stopped working, worn out, or broke, a lot of expenses I haven’t anticipated and accounted for keep cropping up and making things worse.
Bank balance: As long as my bank account remains over-drafted, not only can I not use it, I can’t open another bank account anywhere else.  The MoneyNetwork account I use comes with a lot of restrictions and makes it very hard to actually get at my money when I need it.  Unfortunately, the only real solution to this is paying off the overdrafts, which means tossing a few hundred dollars down the drain, something I won’t be able to do for at least another few paychecks as it is.
There’s more odds and ends (EG a new bike helmet, new electronics cables and chargers, the occasional Uber/Lyft, etc.) but those are the big, pressing things.  The thing is, at the rate my paychecks are getting yanked out from under me right now, I don’t know if I’m going to be able to afford a lot of these things for at least another couple months, and I’m starting to worry something could cause me to lose my job before I even get to that point.  Since I started this job, I’ve been agonizing over how to prioritize these expenses, and getting even more lost every time a new one crops up.  A lot of these expenses could affect my job performance and that’s something I can’t really afford, but at the same time I can’t afford most of these expenses right now.
Point is, I’m starting to flounder again and I really need some relief.  I don’t know what I’ll do if I lose this job, but right now it’s not churning out enough to cover all my necessary expenses.  If I can get at least some of the above stuff taken care of in short order, it will loosen my budgets substantially, I’ll be able to actually keep some money in my bank accounts following a paycheck, and I won’t be standing over the edge looking down anymore, so to speak.
The long and short of it is, I’m asking for money for some financial help.  Furthermore, as much as I’d like to assure that I’ll pay it back, I really have no idea if/when I’ll be in the kind of position to do so.  Even just knocking out a few of the above expenses would take a huge load off.
So, if you have any money you can and are willing to spare so that I can keep on the road to general recovery (both financial and health-wise), I would greatly appreciate it.  I can’t really use something like GoFundMe because of my limited access to banking, so I’m asking for donations via either Google Wallet or Venmo.  I also can’t use paypal for the moment, however if you can only use paypal and would like to donate, please please message me and I’ll see if we can figure something out.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.  I’m also not trying to make a huge campaign of this, I don’t want to take in any more than I reasonably need.
My Google Wallet address: [email protected] My Venmo profile: [email protected]
Thanks to everyone who at the very least read this far, I do appreciate it.  While I’m trying not to spread this around more than necessary, if you know anyone that might be willing to help, I would appreciate directing them this way if you could.
(Also, because I have a feeling this is going to get brought up, full disclosure: I was able to attend Anthrocon in Pittsburgh last weekend, but I was able to do so because a very good friend on the AC staff made it happen for me and it didn’t actually cost me anything, and him very little.  I just want to make that clear.)

The Moral Problem that Everyone is Missing with the Healthcare Debate Right Now
Other than the fact that healthcare is simply not a right, there is a huge debate surrounding congress and the president’s attempts at passing a repeal/repeal+replace of the 2010 Affordable Care Act, otherwise (not so) affectionately known as ”Obamacare.”
Under Obamacare, we have seen premiums skyrocket. They will be quick to blame the insurance companies to start, forgetting the simple economic understanding explains that when you force the insurance company to cover things you not only remove the competition (you know, keeping prices in check) from the market, but also adds unnecessary bureaucratic costs to procedures that maintain no risk.(x) Perhaps I’ve already lost you in this argument—I urge you to read on as I’m going to be making a completely different point by the end. I also encourage you to look up a man by the name of Thomas Sowell, and study his works. He’s a great thinker and has a lot of strong arguments about healthcare.(x)
Those in favor of the bill will tell you that we have seen an increase in the number of people who are now insured. But what they won’t tell you is how many of these people are now insured because they have to be. They are not willingly participating in the marketplace, but instead submitting to a government mandate that continues to fall well outside the boundaries of the Constitution. Newest speculation regarding the potential “22 million that will lose their insurance under the BCRA or others” comes from the fact that 73% (or 16,060,000 people) of these people will opt out of their own free will.
Americans are being forced to buy into a product that they don’t want or don’t need. They have no say in the matter.  I am one of those people.
I am a very healthy, 27-year-old single female. I go to the doctor’s office once a year for an exam that costs about $140 out of pocket in my region. How much did I pay for premiums in 2016? $2,016.37. Don’t worry, my premiums only went up 25% for 2017. That’s right: one doctor’s visit cost me $2,000 last year. I work for a non-profit. I’m sitting on a great deal of student debt. The last thing I wanted to do was throw an extra $2,000 out the window when I had actual bills I needed and wanted to pay. Instead, I’m subject to a tax or a penalty, I’m getting to choose between two different guns pointed at my head—oh boy.
And on top of that I get to be counted as one of the Obama administration’s “accomplishments” of now being insured, but I had NO say in the matter. Am I the only one that sees a problem with that?
I understand that a lot of my religious and even “conservative” friends are very much in favor of Obamacare, universal healthcare, or similar proposals. Their argument is simply that we must take care of the people in our country. I would agree with this--I absolutely believe in helping those less fortunate than myself. But that is not where their view ends. They are for expanding Medicare, saying that reducing it will harm many people, that we must pay into a system to ensure that everyone is protected and we as Christians need to help our neighbors as God commands us. (PS - you all know that there are still millions of uninsured people out there, right?)
But really—what is it that God says? I’m still trying to find the verse that says “make sure you do all of these things at the forceful hand of the government.” Essentially they try to support the ideas of charity within the mandate of government regulations, but that’s not true religion, is it?
James 1:27 tells us that “pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained.”
Pure religion. Seems like almost too easy of a concept. One of the most important aspects of this is visiting the orphans and widows, those who (in that society) cannot take care of themselves and require support from the community. Yes, I am in complete support of providing for those who need it. It is our duty to help these individuals. Part of this help comes from:
C H A R I T Y
Private charity is a strongly articulated concept in scriptures. We see it perpetuate throughout both the Old and New Testaments.
Psalm 112:5a - “It is well with the man who is gracious and lends.”
Psalm 41:1 - “How blessed is he who considers the helpless; the Lord will deliver him in a day of trouble.”
Proverbs 19:17 - “One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord and He will repay him for his good deed.”
Proverbs 28:27 - “He who gives to the poor will never want, but he who shuts his eyes will have many curses.”
I Timothy 6:18 - “Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share.”
1 John 3:17 - “But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?”
But we also know that the Lord judges our heart, our intent, not simply our actions. The Lord shows Samuel this very principle even in OT times when He says “God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (I Samuel 16:7).
2 Corinthians 9:6-7 states “Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
The Lord shows that a believer gives not only generously, but with a pure heart that is not under compulsion.
The fact is simple: we as believers are called to give to charity. It is clear as day. It is a simple and pure truth that is perpetuated throughout the Scriptures. But that is where the church and all religious people have failed. They believe that it is the government’s job to take care of its lowly citizens, when it is 100% ours. And unless we remove the mandates and overwhelming impositions of the government, the church is never going to step up. Someone needs to call out believers for the hypocrites that they are. When your brother is in need, did you bother to help him? When is the last time you reached into your pocket and pulled out that last $20 you had to give to the man down the street that you know can’t buy groceries this week? When is the last time you chose in faith to commit even a small $5 donation to the family friend that is trying to raise money for a medical procedure they cannot get covered? That is the problem. Plain and simple.
Many of my friends will argue that if we remove the government influences (since the church has failed), the victims of poor circumstances will remain. It appears my friends that you are treading on fallacious grounds.
There are plenty of instances where we have seen American (and non) citizens step up when their government, whether federal or local, has failed to act.
How about the citizens of Portland that took to patching their streets in an effort to show their desire for “freedom and equality?” (x x x)
Have you been paying attention to the stories of churches that are attempting to provide shelter to homeless individuals but their local governments are trying to fine them?
Across the pond, even though government overreach ultimately cost the young Charlie Gard his chance at life, his family successfully raised over 1.6 million USD to cover the costs of experimental medical treatment here in the US. And after hearing of this story, a US hospital offered to treat the sweet child at no cost. (x x)
Even the abortion-mill Planned Parenthood had a great increase in donations when they were at risk of legislation defunding them due to the 2016 presidential election results. (x x x)
Websites like GoFundMe serve as perpetual examples of the opportunity for private charity. Log on and you can easily send $5, $50, or $500 to a person in need, and you don’t even have to know them.
Perhaps people don’t believe me. Here I am sitting on my soapbox proclaiming a simple solution to a very complex problem. I don’t want my private charities to be exalted here, because that is not what this is about (Matthew 6:1-4). I will assure you, believe me or not, that I am 100% practicing what I’m preaching. And if I wasn’t pouring out thousands of dollars in mandated health insurance that I honestly don’t need, I would be able to give even more.
Acts 3:6 reminds believers of the giving nature that we are called to. Peter expressed to the lame beggar on the side of the road that he had no silver or gold to offer, but what he had he gave freely.
This is the mindset that believers should be taking. Private charity is the only way to properly cover this great need that people feel has spread across our country. Those who cannot have their expenses covered should not need to look any farther than their local church. The church has failed, however. They need to turn and repent, and then follow the commands of the Lord.

Dear Roger the Fish, Money Dog, and others...
...you guys all SUCK!
Why?
Because not one of them worked. I reblogged you; you and your promises of cash money, good health, and all... and what happened to me?
I end up having to have knee surgery, which has now kept me out of work for more than 5 months. Which means NO MONEY! If not for the help of family and friends, we would have been evicted already (although that’s still not off the table). We had a gofundme set up, but it’s sitting stagnant now. Haven’t had a donation in quite some time.
So what happened?
Back in September, I was at work. It was a normal day at work - I was at an event in Bentonville, signed up a few people for service, and got ready to leave for the day. I stood up, didn’t hit anything, and WHAM! I collapsed to the ground. My knee was the size of a large cantaloupe. I couldn’t stand, I couldn’t walk. I hobbled the best I could to where my car was parked. I literally crawled the last 50 feet or so to the car. I drove home.
When I got home I called my son (@macleod) from the car (while in the driveway - no one else in the house has a phone) and asked him to come out and help me into his mother’s car, and to ask her to drive me to the hospital.
While at the hospital, the doctor came to draw some fluid off of my knee. He was having difficulty. The syringe he was using kept pulling against his draw. When he got what he needed, he turned to us and said, “it shouldn’t look like paste.”
Ugh... so I was immediately admitted to the hospital, where I stayed for a week. I had knee surgery the next day. I don’t remember it, because I was out cold for 36 hours. I woke up the next day, and was told the infectious disease doctor had come by, and that they were worried I had an infection in my knee. They were running tests, after tests, after tests... and blood draws every 6 hours. Check my vitals every 4 hours. Take pills now. Take pills then. Take some more pills any time you’re awake. Ugh.
The second infectious disease doc has a plan - and it sounds like a good one, but the first infectious disease doc says NO. So we stop. And start over again. No one knows why my knee decided to stop working. Not the doctor (#1) who did the initial fluid draw, not the surgeon (#2), not the first infectious disease doc (#3), not the second infectious disease doc (#4), not my Primary Care doc (#5)... then two weeks or so after I get out of the hospital, Doc #2 ordered an MRI of my knee. It showed a torn meniscus, 2 floating objects, and a dark spot on my bone. So now the line of thought was an infection in the bone. I guess it’s time for antibiotics, right? Well, if you thought that, you would be wrong. While Doc #4 agreed I needed to get some antibiotics, Doc #3 canceled Doc #4′s order, and I didn’t get antibiotics.
Now, while all of this is going on, I sit at home, not being able to move. Barely making it down the tiny hallway to the bathroom, so I’m also using using a urinal while I sit on the couch on the days I really can’t move. It is sometimes weeks between doctor visits, and longer hearing back from them. This is all happening over the month of September, October, November, then in December I start with Physical Therapy. This group of people is tough, but fair, and they get me up and working on rebuilding the atrophied muscles in my leg... finally at the beginning of January Doc #2 then decides to send me to the nerve specialist (#6). Doc #6 ordered another MRI, only not on my knee, but on my lower back and hips.
After 2 weeks, the MRI is back, the doctor has seen it, and I get my appointment with him (#6). Doc #6 says I have three severely crushed nerves in my lower back. The nerves run down into my left leg, and he says there is a good chance this is what is causing the problems in my leg. Well, not the initial knee issue that sent me to the hospital (they still have no explanation for that), but the continuing numbness and weakness that is keeping me from standing and walking without using a walker.
Turns out that if I didn’t go to the hospital because of my initial knee issue, they would have never found the crushed nerves, which could have ended with my losing the use of leg completely, had it not been found.
Two weeks ago, doc #6 injected some sort of steroid mixture into my spinal cord. It seems to have worked. Most (not all) of the pain went away. I am no longer swallowing pain pills every 4 hours. I can stand, but not walk yet. I still have to use the walker to keep me stable. I can keep getting these shots every 10 weeks or so, but doc #6 says they’ll start to lose their potency and they’ll wear off sooner. He says back surgery is more than likely in my future, so we have an appointment with the surgeon (#7) on Valentine’s Day.
So we’re back to Roger the Fish, MoneyDog and more...
We need help. February is fast approaching, and we have exhausted every dollar we have. The initial amount of money has paid for our expenses for the first five months, and we are entering month six. If you can donate, thank you. If you cannot, perhaps a reblog of this post can be the way you help us. Thank you. Every little thing helps.
http://www.gofundme.com/2w5gr5d8
So if you made it this far, and have read the mini novel I ended up writing (this started out as a rant against the ‘reblog for cash’ posts) you have more patience than most people I know. I apologize for any grammar mistakes, or spelling errors - I’m trying to get used to the keyboard on a used laptop that I was just gifted with (my beautiful laptop was fried by a nasty power surge that also fried my surge protector- I weep). Thanks.

A College Chain Crumbles, and Millions in Student Loan Cash Disappears
What would you do if you were a college administrator at Argosy University, a for-profit school owned by a Christian nonprofit, and on the verge of bankruptcy, owing creditors $40 million and unable to make upcoming $13 million in payroll and other expenses: (1) declare bankruptcy, (2) take $13 million the in available loan money for students on 22 campuses and use it to pay for expenses like payroll, (3) something else, if so what? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?
When the Education Department approved a proposal by Dream Center, a Christian nonprofit with no experience in higher education, to buy a troubled chain of for-profit colleges, skeptics warned that the charity was unlikely to pull off the turnaround it promised.
What they didn’t foresee was just how quickly and catastrophically it would fail.
Barely a year after the takeover, dozens of Dream Center campuses are nearly out of money and may close as soon as Friday. More than a dozen others have been sold in the hope they can survive.
The affected schools — Argosy University, South University and the Art Institutes — have about 26,000 students in programs spanning associate degrees in dental hygiene and doctoral programs in law and psychology. Fourteen campuses, mostly Art Institute locations, have a new owner after a hastily arranged transfer involving private equity executives. More than 40 others are under the control of a court-appointed receiver who has accused school officials of trying to keep the doors open by taking millions of dollars earmarked for students.
The problems, arising amid the Trump administration’s broad efforts to deregulate the for-profit college industry, began almost immediately after Dream Center acquired the schools in 2017. The charity, started 25 years ago and affiliated with a Pentecostal megachurch in Los Angeles, has a nationwide network of outreach programs for problems like homelessness and domestic violence and said it planned to use the schools to fund its expansion.
Now its students — many with credits that cannot be easily transferred — are stuck in a meltdown. On Wednesday, members of the faculty at Argosy’s Chicago and Northern Virginia campuses told students that they had been fired and instructed to remove their belongings. In Phoenix, an unpaid landlord locked students out of their classrooms. In California, a dean advised students two months away from graduation not to invite family to attend from out of town.
“In less than a month, everything I have worked for the past three years has been taken from me,” said Jayne Kenney, who is pursuing her doctorate in clinical psychology at Argosy’s Chicago campus. “I am also conscious of the fact that what seems like the swift fall of an ax in less than one month has in reality been festering for years.”
The fall accelerated last week when the Education Department cut off federal student loan funds to Argosy after the court-appointed receiver said school officials had taken about $13 million owed to students at 22 campuses and used it for expenses like payroll. The students, who had borrowed extra money to cover things like rent and groceries, were forced to use food banks or skip classes for lack of bus fare.
Lauren Jackson, a single mother seeking a doctorate at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology, an Argosy school in Chicago, did not receive the roughly $10,000 she was due in January. She has been paying expenses for herself and her 6-year-old daughter with borrowed money and GoFundMe donations.
On Tuesday, after three months of not paying her rent, she received an eviction notice.
“I didn’t want to go home and tell my baby that Mommy may not be a doctor,” said Ms. Jackson, whose school could close Friday. “Now I don’t want to go home and tell her that we don’t have a home.”
‘Bad for Everyone’
Led by Secretary Betsy DeVos, the Education Department has reversed an Obama-era crackdown on troubled vocational and career schools and allowed new and less experienced entrants into the field.
“The industry was on its heels, but they’ve been given new life by the department under DeVos,” said Eileen Connor, the director of litigation at Harvard Law School’s Project on Predatory Student Lending.
Ms. DeVos, who invested in companies with ties to for-profit collegesbefore taking office, has made it an agency priority to unfetter for-profit schools by eliminating restrictions on them. She also allowed several for-profit schools to evade even those loosened rules by converting to nonprofits.
That’s what Dream Center wanted to do when it asked to buy the remains of Education Management Corporation.
Education Management, once the nation’s second-largest for-profit college operator, was struggling for survival after an investigation into its recruiting tactics resulted in a $200 million settlement in 2015. Despite those troubles, it had 65,000 students, and some of its schools maintained strong reputations.
Dream Center is connected to Angelus Temple, which was founded by Aimee Semple McPherson, a charismatic evangelist once portrayed by Faye Dunaway in a TV movie, “The Disappearance of Aimee.” It is affiliated with the Foursquare Church, an evangelical denomination with outposts in 146 countries.
Buying a chain of schools “aligns perfectly with our mission, which views education as a primary means of life transformation,” Randall Barton, the foundation’s managing director, said when Dream Center announced its plan.
But Dream Center had never run colleges. It hired a team including Brent Richardson, who worked on the conversion of Grand Canyon University to a nonprofit as its chairman, to lead the schools’ corporate parent, Dream Center Education Holdings. He stepped down in January.
Alarms were ringing from the moment the takeover was proposed. Dream Center’s effort to buy the failing ITT Technical Institutes schools had fallen apart after resistance from the Obama administration. When it asked to buy Education Management’s schools, consumer groups, members of Congress and some regional accreditors raised concerns.
But in late 2017, Ms. DeVos’s agency gave preliminary approval to Dream Center’s plan.
Almost immediately, the organization discovered the schools were in worse shape than expected, with aging facilities and outdated technology. The universities “were, on the whole, failing without hope for redemption,” the receiver wrote in a court filing last month.
Dream Center had anticipated a $30 million profit in its first year, Mr. Barton wrote in a recent legal filing. Instead, it was facing a $38 million loss.
And Dream Center showed little inclination to curb the tactics that got Education Management in trouble, like misleading students about their employment prospects. The executives it installed cultivated a high-pressure culture in which profit surpassed all other concerns, according to a report filed last year by Thomas J. Perrelli, the court-appointed monitor overseeing the schools’ compliance with their state settlements.
By the end of 2018, Dream Center was facing eviction on at least nine campuses and owed creditors more than $40 million, and Education Department officials scrambled to plan for what looked like an imminent implosion.
“We know all too well that precipitous school closures are bad for everyone involved and leave too many students high and dry,” said Liz Hill, an agency spokeswoman. “Teams of people at the department have been working tirelessly on behalf of students — caught up in this situation through no fault of their own — with the singular goal in mind to ensure as many students as possible had options to complete their education.”
A Rapid Unraveling
The problems grew in mid-January when a creditor sued Dream Center Education Holdings over unpaid bills and asked a federal court to install a receiver to wind down the insolvent organization. Within a day, a federal judge appointed Mark Dottore, who was working with Dream Center as a paid consultant, as its receiver.
At a forum last month with students at Argosy University in Chicago, Mr. Dottore tried to calm an anxious crowd.
“We will make it until June, I can pretty much assure you of that,” Mr. Dottore said, according to a recording provided to The New York Times by a student. “By hook or by crook, I’m going to get us there.”
But on Wednesday, Mr. Dottore filed an emergency motion describing his plans to sell Argosy’s campuses, plus the South University and Art Institute campuses that haven’t been sold already. Any that didn’t have a buyer by Friday would close, he said.
Even as Argosy campuses prepared to close, a dean at the American School of Professional Psychology in Northern Virginia emailed students on Wednesday, imploring them to attend classes the rest of the week “if we are to save the semester.”
Scott Peck, a 50-year-old student there, left behind a six-figure salary in software and cashed out his 401(k) savings to pay for his doctorate. But he feels worse for his younger classmates.
“What’s so heartbreaking is to see what’s happening to these kids in their 20s, who are believing things they’re told by people that they trust,” he said.
Argosy was supposed to pay students the extra money they had borrowed, then seek reimbursement from the government. But Argosy reported that the money was paid out even though it wasn’t, Mr. Dottore wrote in court filings, and used the reimbursements for operating expenses instead.
A Dream Center spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment on the fraud accusation.
While Argosy students have little hope of getting back money they paid out of pocket, the Education Department said the federal loan debt of affected students would be forgiven for this semester. If the schools close, students can seek help under a program covering school shutdowns.
A Partial Rescue
Not all of the Dream Center schools are under threat of an immediate shutdown. Some were recently shunted to a new owner in a deal partly orchestrated by the Education Department.
But the arrangement with Studio Enterprise, a Los Angeles company that provides support services for creative-industry training programs, raises its own questions. Studio is personally funded by the principals of Colbeck Capital Management, a New York private equity firm that set up the nonprofit owner.
Dream Center said in July that it would close more than 30 ailing campuses across all three chains, but a few months later it reached a deal with Studio to salvage some Art Institute locations.
As Dream Center’s problems mounted in December, the Education Department called an emergency meeting. Studio agreed to coordinate an acquisition of eight Art Institute campuses and, at least temporarily, six South University campuses.
To maintain their nonprofit status, the agreement gave Studio the right to pick a nonprofit to buy the schools. Colbeck Capital used a Delaware-based nonprofit it created five years ago, renaming it the Education Principle Foundation, according to a state filing uncovered by the Republic Report, a site that has closely tracked Dream Center’s unraveling.
In mid-January, a news release informed the 15,000 students at 14 Arts Institute and South campuses that their schools were owned by a foundation that hadn’t existed three weeks earlier. Two people familiar with the foundation’s plans said it intended to spin the South campuses off under their own leadership.
Robin Von Bokhorst, listed in legal filings as the foundation’s president, did not respond to requests for comment.
Bryan Newman, Studio’s chief executive, said the Art Institute schools had been “ignored for years.”
“We’re coming in with the view that these schools need investment,” he said.
Consumer groups and lawmakers, however, are questioning the arrangement. Two Democrats in Congress have asked the Education Department’s inspector general to investigate the department’s role in the deal.
The fate of the schools in receivership is still being sorted out. The judge who appointed Mr. Dottore scheduled a hearing for Monday to determine if he should be removed. Creditors have complained about his close ties to Dream Center, and the judge wondered if Mr. Dottore was managing the situation in a way that did “more harm than good.”
Many students agree.
“The way they presented the receivership was that it would be beneficial to the students, but it’s actually been detrimental,” said Marina Awed, a student at an Argosy school in California, Western State College of Law, who was scheduled to graduate in two months. “It shouldn’t be this easy to defraud the Department of Education.”

Tuesday Open Thread | Puerto Rico Has Been Sent Back to the 19th Century. WHERE IS THIS COUNTRY’S RESPONSE?
We have 3.5 MILLION AMERICAN CITIZENS who have been sent back into the 19th Century, because of the results of Hurricane Maria. Puerto Rico has SEVEN TIMES the population of New Orleans.. And the response from this White House has been absolutely ridiculous.
They’re going to bring up an aid bill for Puerto Rico SOMETIME IN OCTOBER?
DA PHUQ?
These citizens are going through hell NOW.
And we have the Incompetent, Unqualified Orange Individual on Twitter attacking professional athletes, but NOTHING about Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico has 7x the population of New Orleans spread out over 10x the area. This disaster is on a scale unknown in modern U.S. history.

Amount FEMA has disbursed so far in PuertoRico: $2.1 million Amount EACH of Trump’s visits to Mar-a-lago costs: $3 million
When Japan was hit by terrible quake & tsunami in 2011, DoD deployed 24K personnel, 189 aircraft & 24 USN ships for HA/DR. Why less for PR?

There is no infrastructure on the island.
Battered Puerto Rico hospitals on life support after Hurricane Maria
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO (Reuters) – Puerto Rico’s medical services are in critical condition in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
The strongest storm to hit the island in decades has left hospitals flooded, strewn with rubble and dependent on diesel generators to keep the neediest patients alive.
The precarious shape of the island’s medical facilities is adding to the misery and devastation of this U.S. territory, whose 3.4 million residents are American citizens. For some, the only option is to evacuate to the United States for treatment.
…………………. For hospitals across this region, the challenges are mounting. After the power went out, back-up generators at some hospitals failed quickly. Other hospitals are running critically low on diesel. Fuel is so precious that deliveries are made by armed guards to prevent looting, according to Dr. Ivan Gonzalez Cancel, a cardiovascular surgeon and director of the heart transplant program at Centro Cardiovascular.
“Another hospital wants to transfer two critical patients here because they don’t have electricity,” Gonzalez Cancel said. “We can’t take them. We have the same problem.”
Medical staffers are also running low on gasoline for their daily commutes to work. Puerto Ricans are queuing as long as seven hours at the island’s few functioning filling stations. Marilyn Rivera Morales, a nurse at the center, said she had enough petrol to drive to the hospital for two more days.
“How will they keep coming here if they don’t have gas?” Gonzalez Cancel wondered.

WHY is COMFORT important?
An answer from the foreign policy writer at BJ:
Adam L Silverman says: September 25, 2017 at 10:14 pm
@Baud: This is one of two hospital, humanitarian response, disaster management, and/or emergency response ships in the fleet. The other is the USNS Mercy. They are designed for this type of thing. Also, in comparison, when the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan we sent over 120 ships as soon as we could put them afloat. Plus significant ground, amphibious, and air assets. Right now we’ve got a US Navy float of four amphibious ships with their Marine Expeditionary Unit, an Army medical company, an Army civil information support unit, some Coast Guard assets, some FEMA assets, etc. Over 3 million Americans are at risk and we’ve sent less than 10% of what we sent to aid Japan.

Here’s How You Can Help People In Puerto Rico 3.5 million Americans are enduring “apocalyptic” conditions right now because of Hurricane Maria. By Jennifer Bendery
WASHINGTON ― At least 13 people are dead. Most people don’t have water or power. There’s no cell service. Roads have been totally washed away or blocked by debris. This is life right now in Puerto Rico, where 3.5 million Americans are struggling to recover from the devastation of last week’s Hurricane Maria.
Local officials described the scene as “apocalyptic” on Sunday. And just two weeks earlier, Hurricane Irma blew through and caused as much as $1 billion in damages to the island.
A lot of mainland Americans don’t realize that Puerto Ricans are Americans. FEMA has been providing lifesaving resources to the island, but people there could use any help they can get to try to rebuild their destroyed lives. While President Donald Trump may be spending his weekend trashing football players on Twitter, if you want to lend a hand to a fellow American in need, there are easy ways to kick in a few bucks.
More about the situation in Puerto Rico:
Puerto Rico’s Agriculture and Farmers Decimated by Maria
By FRANCES ROBLES and LUIS FERRÉ-SADURNÍ SEPT. 24, 2017
YABUCOA, P.R. — José A. Rivera, a farmer on the southeast coast of Puerto Rico, stood in the middle of his flattened plantain farm on Sunday and tried to tally how much Hurricane Maria had cost him.
“How do you calculate everything?” Mr. Rivera said.
For as far as he could see, every one of his 14,000 trees was down. Same for the yam and sweet pepper crops. His neighbor, Luis A. Pinto Cruz, known to everyone here as “Piña,” figures he is out about $300,000 worth of crops. The foreman down the street, Félix Ortiz Delgado, spent the afternoon scrounging up the scraps that were left of the farm he manages. He found about a dozen dried ears of corn that he could feed the chickens. The wind had claimed the rest.
“There will be no food in Puerto Rico,” Mr. Rivera predicted. “There is no more agriculture in Puerto Rico. And there won’t be any for a year or longer.”
…………………
Hurricane Maria made landfall here Wednesday as a Category 4 storm. Its force and fury stripped every tree of not just the leaves, but also the bark, leaving a rich agricultural region looking like the result of a postapocalyptic drought. Rows and rows of fields were denuded. Plants simply blew away.
In a matter of hours, Hurricane Maria wiped out about 80 percent of the crop value in Puerto Rico — making it one of the costliest storms to hit the island’s agriculture industry, said Carlos Flores Ortega, Puerto Rico’s secretary of the Department of Agriculture.

How to pay for your volunteer abroad trip
From flights to travel insurance, international travel can add up quickly. However, with a bit of planning and saving, volunteering abroad doesn’t have to break the bank.
First off, let’s talk about the costs involved in volunteering abroad. While people are often shocked to learn that they’ll have to pay to volunteer abroad, the truth is it isn’t cheap. Volunteering in a foreign country includes many of the same expenses as traveling for a vacation, from transportation to food and housing. And even though you’re donating your time and effort for free, those costs don’t magically disappear.
However, by choosing an affordable volunteer program provider and limiting unnecessary expenses, you can make paying to volunteer abroad less painful.
You’ll need a two-step strategy: reducing your expenses and finding ways to bring in a bit of extra dollars. Here’s how to do it.
How to cut expenses and save money
1. Create a budget
Before you can start saving, you’ll need to tally up your expenses and figure out how much you’ll need for your trip. Familiarize yourself with program fees for your destination as well as the cost of flights, weekend trips and any personal expenses you’ll have while you’re traveling.
uVolunteer’s affordable program fees include the cost of accommodation and two daily meals, so you’ll save a lot on two of the most costly aspects of traveling. But you’ll still need to budget for lunches and weekend meals, as well as local transportation to and from your project when you’re abroad.
Once you know exactly what expenses need to be covered, you can start figuring out how you’ll get there.
2. Look for deals on flights
As one of the largest expenses outside of your program fee, flights can come in anywhere from $500-1,000, depending on the destination. In fact, cost might affect where you choose to volunteer. If you’re traveling from the United States, flights to Costa Rica will be considerably cheaper at about $300-500 than to Ghana, for example, where tickets can cost upwards of $900.
We recommend starting your search as early as possible (at least 3-6 months before your departure date) to find the best deals on flights. You can find good discounts on sites like Skycanner and CheapAir. And, if you’re a student or young person, you may qualify for slightly lower fares on StudentUniverse or STA Travel.
This one is a bit of a hit or miss, but if you have friends and family who are frequent travelers, you can always try asking them to donate airline miles toward your trip.
3. Cancel useless subscriptions
Whether it’s the gym you only go to a couple times a year or those magazines you get every month but never have time to read, go through your credit card statements and identify recurring payments that you can get rid off. Do you need both Hulu and Netflix? Or could you do without Spotify Premium for a few months? Chances are you can find a couple things to cut.
Most likely you won’t even miss these items — but if you realize you do need them, you can always resubscribe.
4. Do without your favorite treats
Maybe you like a fancy latte every morning or just enjoy a mani-pedi every two weeks. Think about the little things you splurge on frequently that add up over time. It might be a little tough to do without your favorite treats for a while, but won’t it be worth it when you’re on a plane en route to Costa Rica? Missing out on dinners with friends for a couple months suddenly won’t matter as much when you’re eating authentic pad thai for lunch in Thailand.
How to raise money
1. Start a crowdfunding campaign
If you aren’t able to cover the cost of your trip on your own, then why not consider fundraising to make up the difference? You can use an online crowdfunding platform like GoFundMe or FundMyTravel to share your story with friends and family and raise money for your trip.
Even small donations of $5 or $10 from enough people will go along way toward your expenses. Just be sure to show why this trip will be meaningful for you so people can feel connected to your goals. Then, reach out to pretty much everyone you know!
2. Sell personal items
You can also earn some extra pennies for your trip by selling items that are old, but still in good condition. Do a closet clean out and sell clothes that you never wear on sites like Poshmark, ThredUp or your local thrift store. Or if you’re a student, you can sell old textbooks on Amazon and Chegg.com.
This takes a lot more time and planning but you could even go a step further and host a good old garage sale to get rid of items that have been piling up at home. Not only will you be freeing up space and getting rid of things you no longer need, but you’ll be funding your dream. Win-win!
Stay motivated
Once you’ve decided on a budget and savings plan, set yourself up for success. It’s easy to forget why you’re forgoing your favorite morning latte or scrimping without cable after the novelty wears off. But keep reminding yourself why you wanted to take this trip in the first place. Perhaps add a photo of your destination as the wallpaper on your phone. And feel free to scour Instagram for cool ideas and inspiration for what you could do or foods you want to try while you’re there.
The more excited you are about the trip, the easier it will be to stay focused on getting there.
