If you're still doing this: top five podcasts OTHER that Presidential (I finished it two weeks ago 😁)
Unfortunately, I don't listen to many podcasts aside from Presidential (so thrilled you listened to it!), so I don't have too many options for this list.
Writing Excuses: Podcast about writing sci-fi and fantasy hosted by Brandon Sanderson, Howard Tayler, Dan Wells, and (eventually) Mary Robinette Kowal. I don't much like what the podcast has become with the new rotating roster of guest hosts, so I don't listen to it much anymore, but for a few years, I listened to this frequently and it taught me a lot about writing (my ideal era is roughly around Seasons 6-11). It's still the template for my ideal podcast format--several hosts, so you get multiple perspectives and voices, but with short episodes that stay on topic instead of turning into a drawn-out gabfest.
American History Tellers: An American history podcast that I found shortly after finishing Presidential. It tends to tell stories in 3-8 episode arcs about different eras of American history, with frequent interludes that provide cinematic retellings of historical moments, complete with sound effects. So far I've listened to an episode about Prohibition (which interviews the host of Presidential), the arc about Andrew Jackson, and an episode about Yosemite National Park, all of which I thought were excellent.
Story-a-Day Podcast: Another writing podcast, focused on short fiction in all genres. This one's more business-focused than I like, so I don't listen often, but every once in a while, I find an episode that provides insights that upend my ideas of writing.
K.M. Weiland's Writing Podcast: I do not get along with her hyper-structured story-writing method. But when I needed a break from Writing Excuses, I'd sometimes listen to an episode and find something worthwhile there.
Bible in a Year and Catechism in a Year: These are at the bottom of the list because I haven't actually listened to these yet, but they come highly recommended from family members who have listened to them, and the pieces I've heard sound excellent. Bible in a Year might be a bit of a harder sell for me, because Father Mike reads really fast, but the one episode of Catechism in a Year left me almost overwhelmed with excitement over how my readings about history and philosophy fit in with the Catholic ideas of how we're supposed to engage with public life.

Reposting a comment I made on Reddit:
Also I wanna say, since this came up (repeatedly) in the comments on this post, what my opinion is on a few things regarding the Jon & Clark relationship.
I very much want them to make up, of course. But, for me, I don’t want their history to be glossed over in S3. I feel that Jon really needs to have Clark earn his trust, as well as Clark really needing Jon to earn his. Having their relationship suddenly be okay would, again for me personally, be really upsetting. Maybe frustrating.
Clark wasn’t intending to, but he let Jon down in such ways that Jon obviously doesn’t trust him - not in the way he should. Clark says the Fortress will be for all of them, and Jon immediately doubts this, makes a joke about how Clark’s probably just not considered the ones who can’t fly; like Clark just forgot him before.
Jon, likewise, has obviously shattered Clark’s trust. I don’t think I even need to elaborate on this, right?
They all love each other, but love alone isn’t trust.
(And as Clark had previously established with his Broken Trust speech, it’s something that takes time to rebuild if it’s broken. Their family needs time.)
So, I don’t want things being smoothed out over the between-seasons time-skip. I want to see it happen.
I wrote previously on the sub that I am in the camp of Clark trying to reach out to Jon and Jon being wary and/or distant. I don’t mean this as a punishment for Clark’s character, but as character development for them both. Clark needs to realize the chasm he’s (accidentally) built with Jon, in order to repair it. Jon needs to process his hurt in order to move past it. He always pushes things aside, and then explodes or self-destructs, and it isn’t healthy. They both need to grow, and they both need to slowly come together.
BUT, that said, I don’t want a season-long rebuilding. I want a middle ground. Fluff, angst and hurt+comfort. Maybe have it be one of the first half of the season’s arcs, but concluded by then.
I have also previously stated I wanted Jon to hide his powers from at least Clark, and by extension likely Lois, while he bonds with Nat and Jor over it all. I don’t think this is likely to happen, but I do want it. How in the show? I don’t think it would need more than an episode or two. Three at most, honestly. I think it’s got great story potential, but ultimately - I want to be clear - I want the Lane-Kents happy and healed and united. I just know shoving family issues under the bed and pretending the mess doesn’t exist so you can laugh in the “clean” space is not healthy, so I will, myself, be very unsatisfied with that.
Also, Jordan has always tried with Jon - Jon pushes people away. Granted, I have my own ideas for why that is, but factually, Jordan has tried reaching out since like, 1x02. He does have the character flaw (which he realized after getting yelled at by Lana) of leaning towards self-centered thoughts, but he has tried with Jon. Jon has also, after starting his XK punishments, started to try with Jordan. They aren’t in a perfect place as brothers, however, and frankly they never were (the pilot fighting illustrates this). I have wanted them to also grow and bond together since the first episode, as with Clark & Jon, but they need to actually get there. Skipping past it is, to be blunt, pretty cheap and hollow writing (sorry…). No thanks.
Edit: actually I feel like I should mention Jon did try earlier to reach out to Jordan, before Jordan did the performance with Sarah.
Onto Lois, since I’m apparently rambling about the whole family related to Jon, now. She has made some mistakes, admittedly some OOC, but some not, and I also want her to have a proper rebuilding with Jon. In 2x09 (30 Days, iirc), her actions were out of character but no less harmful; she didn’t intervene at all, and Jon clearly never expected her to. That’s not a good dynamic, not for a loving mother-son relationship. It isn’t the only instance, however. Bizzaro-Lois made it narratively clear that Lois has made mistakes, though. The same can be said of Bizarro in general and Jon-El, however, so really I have little hope of this being handled, anymore than I do with Clark & Jon, which is very, very, very small, and why I still have yet to decide on watching S3 and if so, how (as I talked about under a previous poll, wrt watching S3 at all or not). But I digress, the point is, it’s just as true that Lois has a need to realize her mistakes with Jon and grow, as it is with Clark needing to realize his mistakes with Jon and grow. Jordan of course has done his realizing, for the most part, back in S1 (right before the “if no-one else is gonna help you, I will.” exchange). He has been working on being a better brother for Jon, but Jon still doesn’t know how to rely on others, not truly, and he shuts Jor out whenever his twin starts to get too close (like when Jordan tries to reassure him after the XK fire).
Jordan made the comment “maybe (this family) isn’t all that close to begin with,” and in a way, he was entirely spot-on. They have vast love for one another, but being truly close? They are still lacking this, and that is what I want to watch change, because it has been established and it would be so good to see.
To be clearer: I really just want proper foundations for their fluff, so it feels thoroughly believable and right.
Edit: the paint scene felt right despite this foundation still needing to be built because it was, seemingly, being built; Clark promised to do better, the whole family was set on changing things between them, so this moment of happiness was a continuation of the process already in motion. But things are different now, the rifts are bigger now, so sudden fluff is, in my humble opinion, not going to truly repair anything.
Obviously, we probably won’t get that, and I’m sure I don’t need to explain why to this sub, but I just wanted to say my piece since it came up here.
One of these days, I’m gonna write an analysis on Jon’s character to get his traits/personality and relationships down. Not for anyone else really, but because I kind of need to.
Anyway. This was not directed at anyone, and I am interested in any replies, but I don’t do fighting b/c I am severely traumatized and it messes me up. So.
Apologies for the length and any incomprehensibility.

Chapter 3: They deserve to be heard too... well. Some of them.
Spoiler: Sans is finally here.
You are welcome.
*Your POV*
After agreeing with Mr. Dreemur and W.D. Gaster, my work partners just watched them go, then they stared at me. Those looks, the hate in their eyes, and their whispers made me uncomfortable. When I'll be able to do something without being criticized.
But at that moment, I didn't care. I nervously laughed, then went to my office to take care of some business, that including the cleaning. It's not as bad as my apartment, but it's not the cleanest place in the world either. And that's how it went; cleaning and typing. Lots of fun, of course.
I arrived at my apartment and... I don't remember clearly what I did. Probably the basic. Or well, maybe not the basic, since I bet I didn't sleep that much.
'Cause after that nap I was eating fucking cereal at 5 am, not to say I was already showered.
"Stupid brain" I muttered, feeling tired yet excited. Today marks the day I sold my soul for the monsters and to show humanity that these creatures aren't freaks. Well, I'm not sure. I haven't met enough, after all.
After eating, I put some makeup in my i-want-to-die-but-not-yet face. Just a bit, since society asks for it. I really hoped it wasn't like this but, hey, I can't change everything! Besides, a lot of girls like makeup, so I feel obligated to at least look "presentable" in that aspect.
And then, my day started. At 5:15 am. Just great.
Since I'm just a young person who's still dealing with college, my money it's not enough to actually buy a car. But hey, I have a bike. And public transport. And that's what I picked.
The underground subway was somehow a quiet place, mostly because everyone's still craving for their beds. I strongly relate to these people, if I'm honest. Everyone's minding their own business, too tired to talk or to make a strong scene.
I silently put my headphones for a bit, listening to those classics of rock. Yeah. This is pretty much my life. Hell, even my ringtone is a rock song, that being "Sweet Child O' Mine" from Guns N' Roses. I was thinking to change it into something more... professional. Then I remembered that nobody should give a damn, so I shrugged it off.
A whole playlist was enough to make the trip more bearable, trying to not lose my adulthood on those legendary guitar solos or in Bon Jovi's wonderful voice. Those little yet powerful details on each song reminded me why I still had faith in this world. And the sign indicating my destination brought me back to reality. I sighed.
I walked a short distance and finally arrived at that living hell called the Congress. Being part of this greedy government it's completely out of my standards, but now, I wasn't regretting it at all.
I took a seat in the non-workers area, looking like I was a mad teenager coming to reclaim her rights. Except, that I was looking pretty calm and patient. I checked quickly my phone and see it was 6:10 am. Oh well. At least I can play Mario Run for a bit; it has been ages since I did.
While a simple yet pretty loading picture showed up on my screen, my mind only had one thought: "What if they decide not to show up?"

*Frisk's POV* (lol)
I was giving my hair the final touches when I heard Goat Mom shouting my name. I rushed down the stairs and met with everyone- well, almost everyone...
"SANS! WE ARE GOING TO BE LATE IF YOU DON'T COME!" Papyrus screamed in a horrified voice, looking at the clock for the thousandth time.
"gimme a sec bro, k?" Sans answered lazily, not even making an effort to raise his voice.
"THAT'S WHAT YOU SAID TEN MINUTES AGO!" Papyrus cried, again, looking at the clock.
And then Sans teleported, wearing the same freaking clothes.
"Are you serious?!" Undyne exclaimed, visibly angry for such a waste of time, then we all rolled our eyes when he just winked and shrugged it off.
"Now that we all are ready, let's go!" I exclaimed enthusiastically, carrying Flowey's pot while I tried to forget that episode with Sans "We are still in good time! We have exactly... HOLY COW! FIVE MINUTES?!"
"welp, shit" Sans muttered like it wasn't his fault, getting some glances from his brother.
"Let's run, then!" Undyne cried out, carrying Alphys and starting to run.
I ran after her, Papyrus with Sans in his shoulders following me. Hell, even Mettaton was running like crazy. We can't miss this opportunity; this is our only chance!
We ran between students and boring workers, most of them with a hint of hate in their eyes. However, there wasn't any time to feel intimidated. God. If humans weren't so inconsiderate, we could have just teleported thanks to Gaster's powers. But nope. They are not allowed to use any freaking magic.
Well, I shouldn't be thinking like this. I need to be positive for everyone's sake. But still, I feel confused. Is this what hormones do? But wait, they only act like this when you are- oh. I'm twelve years old. I somehow forgot.
We ran and ran until we arrived. "Congress", the sign read. The building had an old look, but it seems it was purposefully done that way. The place itself looked pretty boring, so I just secretly prayed to don't fall asleep.
The door was slammed open, and people's stares gave us an uncomfortable welcoming. Sans climbed down of Papyrus's shoulders, realizing how bad it looked.
"*About time you take things seriously" I signed to him, with a teasing smile on his face. He looked like he was about to give me the middle finger until a young lady approached us, with a kind smile on her face.
"Hello," she said sweetly, making me relax for a bit. "My name's (Y/N) (L/N), and I'll be the one helping you through this".
Oh, so she's (Y/N)? I never thought she would be THAT young. She's really pretty, I must say. Bright (e/c) eyes that match perfectly with her skin tone. (h/c) hair not too long neither too short. She was tall, yes, but not a giant. She looked really fine. I wish I look like that at my twenties.
"Hello, Miss (L/N)" My mom intervened my thoughts, bringing me back to reality. "I'm really pleased about your kind behavior. I just hope we won't bother you that much..."
"Nonsense!" she exclaimed with a cheery tone, trying to put any awkwardness aside "I am more than open to receiving all of you in my office. Just follow me, we'll discuss everything more privately upstairs".
She guided us to a place where two elevators remained. Since we were too many people, we had to divide into two groups. Lucky thing there were elevators in the Underground, so this wasn't anything new to anyone.
When she made sure everyone was on the fourth floor (asking us how many we were), she started to guide us through the hallway. Everyone was mumbling while looking at their surroundings, staring at some paintings of famous politicians. Well, I don't think they are that famous. I've only heard of them thanks to my history books and those cringy contests on TV. Like, knowing who was the president at 1895 doesn't make you the smartest kid in class. You are just a freak who talks too much with an old man, mostly being your grandfather.
Suddenly she stopped, then opened a door with the number '486' on it.
"You can come in now" She sighed sheepishly. Wonder why. "Let me know if there aren't enough seats".
The room was quite huge, actually. She had at least ten chairs in front of a dark chocolate desk, that had an intimidating and elegant seat behind it. That must be hers, that's for sure. She had a plaque with her name on top of her desk, a small glass with pens, and a Lenovo laptop. Strangely, she had no photos of her family.
It turns out we had enough seats for everyone, but we all couldn't be in front, so we ended up doing two rows. It looked like a really small cinema. One problem, though, was that Asgore couldn't fit comfortably on his seat.
"Is there a problem, Mr. Dreemurr?" (Y/N) asked worried, watching the embarrassing scene of Asgore shifting into multiple positions. Oh God, why me? Before he or anyone could answer though, she went for her fancy chair and started to move it.
"Oh, Miss (L/N), you don't need to-" He was cut off by the impotent seat in front of him, with a slightly panting girl a few inches away.
"You can seat here, Mr. Dreemurr" She smiled widely, probably 'cause of the King's shocked face. And yes, I just remembered I should think of him as the King. Then, (Y/N) took the other chair. "I'll sit on here, don't worry".
After making that move and putting the big chair in the center, she finally took a seat. She looked insecure for a brief moment but smiled anyway. That kind of reminds me of someone...
"Now that we are all settled up, I guess we can start" She stated. And with that, our talk began...
...
It was less boring than I thought. Yes, she asked us a lot of how life was in the Underground, but none of us seemed to mind. What we mind, though, was Sans's stupid puns which, surprisingly, made her giggle quietly. He seemed to notice this, so he kept them going. It's not like I don't like puns, but this was just too much. (Y/N) didn't seem to bother at any moment, though.
But, hey, everyone felt comfortable. She made some comments now and then, most of them full of irony and sarcasm. It was fun and for a moment we forgot about our problems. It just felt like meeting an old friend again, but that's impossible. I mean, I hadn't met her before, so... yeah.
But, as soon as the conversation started, it ended as well. Everyone shook hands with her, including me.
"*Are we going to see you tomorrow?*" I asked in signs, not thinking at all.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Your POV*
"*Are we going to see you tomorrow?*" Frisk signed with a smile that immediately made me feel shivers down my spine. That's not something I see often, that's for sure. Frisk looked at me worried, though. Guess I did some expression that wasn't supposed to be there.
"...sure thing, Frisk," I said, way quieter than I wanted it to be. Quick, change your tone (Y/N)! "We have a lot of work to do, after all!"
She let out a sigh of relief, along with other few. It was a nice feeling. Knowing that they wanted to see me again made me ridiculously happy. And I didn't put it away.
We were already out of the elevator, on the main floor. The sun was setting, painting beautiful colors in the sky, like always. The thing is, monsters couldn't say that before. Heck, some even didn't get the chance to look at this. Whole generations, I bet.
"Miss (L/N), is it okay if we have your number?" Mr. Dreemurr asked, and smiled wider once he probably saw my shocked face. It just caught me so off of guard I didn't have the words. A short skeleton just smirked at my reaction, then I could finally talk.
"S-sure thing!" I exclaimed, which made the skeleton laugh. Just great, I'm being shamed by a skeleton shorter than I am. Way to go, (Y/N).
I reached for my presentation card, and with hesitation, I wrote down my personal number on the back. Wow, it's been ages since I've done that.
"Here it's my business number, and in the back, you can find... m-my personal number" I reluctantly said, knowing it sounded really weird. Why I wrote it down, again?
I looked away slightly, only to notice that skeleton smiling again. Oh no. I swear to God if he says anything weird, I'm going to-
"kinky" he chuckled, containing laughter. I want to kill myself so bad right now.
"SANS, WHAT'S KINKY?!" A taller skeleton asked, and I mentally cringed. And I quickly took note of that name, since it's familiar as fu- oh wait.
"Sans? Like, Comic Sans?" I asked bluntly, forgetting the whole other topic.
"oh, so now catching my name?" he joked with a wink, making me feel worse. "nah, just kidding. but, yeah, that's my name. it's 'catchy', isn't it?"
I sighed, while he just chuckled- again. This Sans guy is making me look bad. And Asgore just watched this whole scene. Great.
"Great! We can add you to our group chat, sweetie!" Mettaton (who I learned their name in the middle of the 'celebrity topic' conversation) winked. What's with the winks today? I feel like they are kink-shaming me (which it's probably what this guy and that skeleton are doing).
"And we'll just call you with the business number if it's something more serious" Mrs. Dreemurr added, obviously unaware of Mettaton's intentions. I gulped. I just hope he doesn't spam me with lewd stuff or something like that. Already happened at high school, and honestly, I feel like an immature teenager again.
Then they all gave their quick goodbyes. Some shooked my hands. Some hugged me. Some smiled. And others even cried.
"Thank you so much for giving us hope." A female (judging by her voice) skeleton said, sobbing quietly on my shoulder. I froze in shock, but I eventually returned the hug.
"It's no problem, believe me" I muttered softly, while a soft smile made its way to my face. "After all, you deserve to be heard too".

Sinister Future
Okay, honestly I am loving the concept of Sword Art Online: Project Alicization. Let me first say this. I called it!!! I always had the theory that someone from Laughing Coffin who had survived the game would come back and attack Kirito! I’ll admit that I forgot a third perpetrator had escaped from the Gun Gale attack. However, I did not imagine that they would try to get revenge on Kirito. I still wonder for what reason Johnny Black attacked Kirito. Was it because he caught his partners, or that he was part of the group that eliminated his guild in Sword Art Online?
I tried to give a little evidence to my theory, to try to lean toward a side. I haven’t caught up on all of the episodes, I still have about four episodes left to catch up. So these questions may yet to be answered. Okay, so we know that Black knew Kirito personally, in that knowing that the young sword-fighter seriously kicked his ass and got him imprisoned. In the midst of attacking Asuna, when Kirito rushed in and defended her. But for sure, Black remembered those faces. Now, from what we saw of the Gun Gale attack, the people who were attacked alongside Sinon, were not SAO survivors. Just people that they did not approve of. But I wondered, two of the three perpetrators were SAO survivors, while the other was a heavy GGO player. It made me wonder, did the Laughing Coffin members ever actually consider SAO players to be targets as well? We saw that Death Gun had a personal drive to kill Kirito in Bullet of Bullets, but since Kazuto’s body was actually protected unlike the other targets, maybe they just couldn’t make him one as well.
When we saw Shinkawa declare his love for Asada, yet still threatening her, it was in the nick of time that Kazuto came to save her. But because he interfered in Shinkawa’s intended actions, the syringe was buried into him instead of Asada. Incidentally missing him because an electrode had been left behind. I guessed that he would be attacked in the same way at some point in the future. There were SAO survivors who carried their grudge from the virtual world into the physical world. But we saw Kirito being targeted more often than Asuna, who was there at the same time that they acquired that grudge against the Black Swordsman.
Just want to put this out there, but I feel that Johnny Black looks like Shigaraki Tomura from My Hero Academia, with a few differences lol. Okay moving on. It also brings me to wonder why it took a year (it seems a year because Asada is enlisting Kirito’s and Asuna’s help for the next BoB, and then with Eugeo saying he was eleven when Alice was taken, suggesting that both he and Kirito are 17), for Black to find Kirito. And he could clearly see that it was both the people he harbored hatred for, and the same thing occurred. Black dove forward, and Kirito shoved Asuna aside to take on the full brunt of the attack.
We can also see that a Death Gun still existed from the first episode, when we see that the group of friends are fighting off player killers in GGO. Those few scenes, when a man looks through the drone’s camera, and sees two kids who are unmistakably Kirito and Asuna, and asks his boss if he can join his comrades in the field. He’s refused, but when we see him pull up his hood, we see the distinct appearance of Death Gun.
Interestingly, the injection came to play in with the other side of the plot. In the first episode I was confused, because seeing a younger Kirito made my eyes widen. When I was introduced to Alice, I instantly thought, Alice in Wonderland. And she’s dressed really similar to her! We were also given an almost immediate sign that it was a virtual world of sorts, and you could tell that Kirito had really bonded with Eugeo and Alice. Also something that was crystal clear was the fact that you could tell Kirito was different than the others. I mean, he was the one to push them into exploring the cave. He was the one who tried to fight the Integrity Knight so they wouldn’t take Alice. He was the anomaly.
Yet when Kazuto talked about it in the real life, you could tell that he didn’t recall his actions, or have access to his real life memories when inside the virtual world. When watching the Project Alicization episode, I did get some answers and evidence, but some questions still lingered. At the moment that Black injected Kazuto, it was in the same area where he had said earlier that there was an electrode. So for a while I thought that it was a repeated event, just like with Shinkawa, that maybe Black had miraculously missed. However, when we see him collapse to the ground, unconscious and clutching his shoulder, we see that unfortunately, Black struck true.
My mind makes me think something else happened. That Black injected right next to the electrode, and somehow it caused him to enter the virtual world once again, but this time maintain his memories of the real life and not be the boy who had been only eleven. Kirito himself said he didn’t remember anything from when he dived into the virtual world at his job. Who knows how many times they had Kirito dive and maintain that same Kirito persona, the boy who had grown up with Eugeo and Alice. They also don’t mention just how long Kirito had been at this part-time job. From what I can predict, as well as blocking Kirito’s own memories, the ones in the virtual world had their memories altered as well. So that history had passed, like Kirito had never existed. The memory block went both ways. Affecting Kirito as well as those in the virtual world.
Let’s add the new input of information. Kikuoka confesses to Asuna how Kirito was actually being used in the experiment. One of the three crucial people needed for the AI experiment. Kirito was effectively put into a world as a corruption, where he would be the one who would change things. But when he was pulled out of that world after he caused Alice to be taken away, history was changed like he had never existed. Eugeo never says it, only says that he and Alice had ventured to the caves and that she’d placed the tips of her fingers into the Dark Territory. But he didn’t know, that if he had remembered properly, it was Kirito’s fault for what happened to Alice. Eugeo could come to hate Kirito for what he had done.
Things have changed now. A 17-year-old Kirito has now stepped back into the world, with no one knowing who he was. He is effectively, the Kirito from another reality, not the one Eugeo had grown up with. Yet still the corruption he had once been. He’s still inspiring a spur of movement. Kirito once again gained a friendship with Eugeo, and made the other boy look at Kirito in awe. Even though Eugeo did not remember Kirito, you could see that some of the younger Kirito’s influence still lingered subconsciously. The fact that Eugeo returned to get the Blue Rose sword, that he remembered the story of the hero Bercouli, and that Kirito was still the drive that pushed him to fight.
Kirito is still a corruption, because he hastened a Calling that had been in place since the beginning of time. Using the sword instead of the axe, and chopping the demon tree that had been there and chopped at for over 300 hundred years. The goblin attack had changed both Kirito and Eugeo, made them stronger so they now had authority over the Blue Rose sword. The reason why they had to undergo the attack, was because they went looking for Selka. Another sign of corruption, no one had ever told Selka what had happened to her older sister, and hence Kirito did, having no idea of what would come of the consequence. She went to the cave, and almost got herself kidnapped. Eugeo was almost killed, because of a newcomer who was an anomaly.
The idea with the injection is just a theory. The episode Project Alicization did provide some insight in what the virtual world actually is and what role Kiritio plays in it. The fact that he’s the anomaly that will bring the AI’s to commit murder so they can be put to military use. Think about it though. Kikuoka confesses that they had to lie to Kirito so they could employ him. Rath is a straight-up sinister organization. For me, it’s still not crystal clear whether or not Kirito was incidentally placed into the virtual world, or as part of the “treatment program”. Because at the same time, there is evidence to support either option. Kikuoka admits that Kirito was put into Underworld as a young child, of the anomaly to be raised as a young child. So that covers the first time around, what we see in the first episode, and how Rath sees that Alice is someone they could get to deviate from the system. But Kikuoka doesn’t mention the second time, where Kirito is as of that moment.
I also believe, that if they did place him in the virtual world for a second time, why leave him with his real life memories this time around? They took complete advantage of the injection. I’m going to say it again, Rath is STRAIGHT-UP SINISTER. They employed a 17 year old boy, one who has several years of experience with VRMMO worlds, and who is an SAO survivor. A boy who was completely ideal, because aside from him and his other friends, we aren’t given the implication that other SAO players are still playing video games. However, they recruited a boy whose past still haunts him even after all those years. Lying to him in the process, because if he knew Rath’s true intentions he would never have agreed to take on the job in the first place.
I mean, but look at the other side of this. The reality. Asuna found Kirito, and she told the other girls. But what about Mrs. Kirigaya? She receives a call that her nephew, the boy she practically raised, was attacked and injected with a killing poison. She arrives to the hospital, to discover that they managed to save him in time, but there’s a high probability that he will never awaken, and that he requires further treatment that the hospital cannot provide. She is then approached by a man who has worked with Kirito, told that her nephew can be transferred to another facility that had the proper treatment needed. Give him a more likely chance of awakening from a poison that was supposed to leave the victim for dead, their heart stopped and damage irreversible. She consents, and then arrives at that facility to see the condition of Kirito, only to be turned away. Lied to, when in truth her son was transferred to a remote island, in the middle of the sea. Maybe Suguha told her after she found out from Asuna, but that still doesn’t make matters better. It’s basically a repeat of the Sword Art Online incident, a long period of Kirito asleep, unknown if he would ever awake, but at least at that time his family had access to him.
Rath places Kirito back into the Underworld simulation, so that even while he’s unconscious yet still receiving treatment and staying alive, he’s fulfilling what they recruited him for in the first place. So his role as a corruption would bring the concept of murder into the simulation. They aren’t giving the treatment as a benefit for Kirito, it’s for themselves. It’s like,” Hey this kid was injected with a really lethal drug, his brain was damaged, and he might never wake up. Let’s put him back into the Underworld, but he can have his memories this time. It won’t matter, probably won’t wake up anyway, and he still won’t know what we’re using him for. How convenient for us, that the boy we’re using for this operation was attacked.”
Sword Art Online: Project Alicization is following this basic timeline. Kirito is given a part-time job for an organization that is seeking to use beings with Artificial Intelligence for military use, but to do that they must be willing to commit murder, and not have to worry about facing a consequence. The first trial is proving to be successful, but then a real-life event occurs that takes away any restrictions the trials previously had. Kirito stands almost to no chance of ever awakening because of the lethal injection, and is trapped in a virtual world. And the biggest problem is, there is no ending to this. I mean sure, we could get the happy ending where Kirito does wake up in his reality, but it doesn’t seem likely. The world he’s placed into only has one ending, should Kirito not achieve what he was placed in for. (which he most definitely will, judging by the later episodes) Kirito can’t log out, he can only grow old, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that once he’s killed or dies naturally he’ll wake up in the real world.
The events of Season 3 weigh on Kirito being exploited and his friends not being able to do anything to stop it. All because a man hell-bent on revenge succeeded in injecting his final victim with a lethal injection.
But hey at least Kirito is being paid for his service for the malicious organization of Rath. Or wait, the treatment could be his “payment”.

LXVI.
September 2018
“The Duchess of Sussex has been pictured in Luxembourg for the last couple of days while The Duke of Sussex has been seen around London doing some engagements. The Duchess has not been seen in London for quite some time. She recently attended the 25th anniversary of the death of her great-uncle King Baudouin of the Belgians in Brussels and will stay in Luxembourg for the christening of Zeno Willms, the son of Princess Marie Gabrielle of Nassau and Antonius Willms. The Duchess of Sussex has been undertaking many foreign engagements, many of which are family related. At a time when most of the royal family scale back their number of engagements, we are not expected to see the Duchess of Sussex performing any engagements any time soon.”
“He is beautiful Gabrielle,” smiled Isabella.
“He’s quite a large baby, isn’t he,” laughed Marie Gabrielle.
“Zeno reminds me of my boys.”
“I wanted to ask about that. What happened?”
“Remember my highs and lows when we were younger. I was in the middle of a high episode and I got everyone mad at me. He went back to London with the boys and took Gaelle and Olympia with them,” explained Isabella.
“Why not go back to London?” asked Marie Gabrielle.
“I don’t know. I guess being here brings me solitude. There’s no point in going back and forth between London and my family,” answered Isabella.
“But what about Harry? And the boys? Surely you want to go back? They are your family after all,” asked Marie Gabrielle.
“Of course I do. But... I don’t know what I’m doing anymore. I feel like I am sacrificing myself for those people.”
“You know that I love you Belle, but you need to stop complaining and trying to play the victim in things. Find your voice again! For goodness sake, you helped people just 2 years ago. You worked for the United Nations because you saw that people needed help and know you have a bigger platform than ever before. You need to go back to the girl you were before Harry. Find yourself again.”
Isabella didn’t go to France with some of her family, instead, she went back to London. She followed Marie Gabrielle’s advice and tried to find herself again. There were a few people at the United Nations whom she still had contact with. Of course, they jumped at the opportunity to work with her since she was elevated to a British Royal after her marriage. Her time working with the United Nations was everything to Isabella because since she was a little girl and learned about her family history, she has wanted to help others. Especially since her family committed so many atrocities over the centuries.
“Here are the last of the binders. You will find your schedule at the end and those who will be attending is in there like you asked.”
“Did you contact Mathilde’s people at Brussels?” asked Isabella.
“I did. You will attend several assemblies with her but I made sure you have more time with Princess Mabel of the Netherlands.”
“Good. I’ve been wanting to meet her for some time now.”
“Ma’am, if I may ask, no British royal has gone to the United Nations before. Then with Brexit, it would not make so sense for you to continue your work with them,” said Isabella’s private secretary.
“Well, no modern royal has been a Habsburg or had the education and language skills I have. I am simply using them to my advantage,” answered Isabella.
“Of course ma’am. Is there anything else you need?”
“No. Thank you.”
“I was also told to give you this by Her Majesty’s office.”
“What is it?” asked Isabella as she stared down at the envelope.
“I don’t ma’am. I was simply told to give it to you.”
“Well. Thank you. I’ll look at this as soon as I’m done with the binders,” replied Isabella.
“I’ll be in the other room if you need of me,” smiled Isabella’s private secretary as she left the room.
Isabella waited until the older woman left the room before immediately reaching towards the large envelope. When she opened it she was confused by the list of names at first. It took some time for everything to click in her mind, they were a list of nannies for Isabella to choose from. She glanced at the list before tossing it aside and focusing on the binders.
Hours went by and the door opened to Olympia carrying a plate of food, “I thought you might be hungry. You’ve been in here for a long time.”
“I’m not hungry,” answered Isabella not bothering to look up from the mass amount of papers.
“Doesn’t matter if you’re hungry or not. I was given clear instructions to make sure you eat.”
“Olympia I’m busy, okay?”
“You haven’t seen Charlie or Bertie since you came back to London,” said Olympia.
“I know you and Gaelle are taking great care of them. There is no need for me to be hovering over them like a mad woman,” replied Isabella.
“They deserve to be with their mother. Held, feed, and loved by their mother Belle.”
When she heard ‘loved’ Isabella stopped what she was doing and looked up at Olympia with anger, “Do you doubt my love for them? I sacrificed a lot to have them and I loved them from the moment I held them in my arms. They are my world and everything I have done and will do since the moment they were born has been for them. For the benefit of my family.”
“I didn’t mean it that way,” said Olympia.
“You did but don’t ever doubt how much I love my children. They are everything to me.”
“I’m sorry,” apologized Olympia.
“You can leave now.”
“I need to make sure to eat everything on the plate.”
“You can leave now,” repeated Isabella.
Olympia was hesitant but she nodded and left the room. Isabella stared at the plate and the papers in front of her for several minutes. She had an appetite but she needed to get through all this work first.
“The Duchess of Sussex followed many European royals and traveled to New York City to attended the United Nations general assembly. The Queen of the Belgians, Crown Princess of Sweden, Crown Prince of Norway, and several other royals joined in the assemblies and summits that ranged from UN Sustainable Development Goals to the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit.
After months hidden away from the public, Archduchess Isabella had returned to her normal engagements. Rumors have been going around about a new tour for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. A tour was allegedly planned during the first year of marriage but Archduchess Isabella had a difficult first pregnancy that required much bed rest. Buckingham Palace released details about before Archduchess Isabella went into labor in Belgium earlier than expected.
Countess Anna von und zu Arco-Zinneberg who happens to be a second cousin of The Duchess of Sussex through Emperor Charles I of Austria is to wed in Bavaria next week. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to attend along with members of the Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, and Belgian royal families. The Duchess of Sussex has yet to be photographed in Scotland with Queen Elizabeth II unlike the rest of the British Royal Family who have made visits.”
“How was New York?”
“Educating,” answered Isabella.
“Good... Charlie hasn’t been eating the past couple of days.”
“Is he sick?”
“No,” replied Harry.
“Did you switch the formulas?”
“Five different ones and he refuses to eat. We’ve hired 2 different women to breastfeed him and he still refuses. When was the last time you had anything?”
“Days, maybe even weeks since I took a sip of anything. I’ll start breastfeeding again. I don’t know how my body will react though.”
“If it doesn’t work you will tell me, right?” asked Harry.
“Of course I will.”
There was another awkward silence between the couple, “How are you?”
“Fine,” answered Isabella.
“Are you telling me the truth?”
“I am fine. I don’t understand where this is coming from,” replied Isabella.
“You’ve always kind of been distant. I don’t know much about you and it has taken a lot to get to where we are. I’ve come to understand that I don’t know you as well as I think I do. You spent so much time away from me and the boys. What where you doing?”
“I was with my family.”
“It has always been two steps forward, ten steps back with you,” said Harry.
“Why are you putting the blame on me? Why do we have to be like other married couples? We aren’t them because in case you forgot we have a marriage of convivence, not love.”
“Is that what you want? Separate personal lives?” asked Harry.
“The only thing binding us together are Charlie and Bertie and any child we have after that.”
“There won’t be anymore.”
“What?”
“We have two and that is all we are having,” answered Harry.
“We are not having just two children. We talked about this Harry! I want more children.”
“I don’t want any more children. Two is enough and my parents were content with two sons as well.”
“Well my parents weren’t content with two sons or two children. They had six Harry,” argued Isabella.
“I’m not going to argue with you about this anymore.”
Isabella was going to argue but Olympia rushed into the room with a phone, “It’s for you.”
“Olympia I’m busy. I’ll take it later,” replied Isabella.
“You really need to take this,” urged Olympia.
The two women stared at each other for a couple of seconds before Isabella grabbed the phone out of Olympia's hand, “Hello?” Harry had taken the opportunity to leave the room in order to avoid arguing with Isabella. Olympia followed him out the door son afterward because Isabella would not stop glaring at her.
“Belle, I’ve been trying to reach you for hours.”
“I’m sorry uncle Henri. I’ve been busy with some engagements,” replied Isabella.
“After the christening, I thought about putting your children in the Luxembourgish nobility. Your grandmother Yolande can be very persuasive.”
“Oh, I didn’t think you would.”
“The government advised me that it wouldn’t be wise for me to grant them titles since the boys and you aren’t shunned from the British. Princes of Bernadotte and Counts of Wisborg were given those titles for a reason, but I did talk to Philippe,” explained Henri.
“A Belgian title.”
“Yes, well the ties between Luxembourg and Belgium have been strong for the last century. You’re a Belgian noble and your sons were born in Belgium. I think them having a Belgian title would much more than anything.”
“Their great-uncle is the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. It’s the thought that counts,” replied, Isabella, hoping it would make her uncle feel better.
“Have you talked to your mother lately?”
“I have. She’s been with Christine in Germany for the past couple of weeks. She’s been having some trouble with her pregnancy and she also wants to stay close to Imre when Kathleen gives birth next month,” explained Isabella.
“Papa will be turning 98 in January there will be a small celebration at Berg castle. I’m sure you and Harry will be coming?” asked Henri.
“Of course we are coming and bringing Charlie and Bertie. By that time Kathleen and Christine would have given birth. Luisa would still be pregnant but that’s still months away so I have no doubt that someone will announce another pregnancy. You should have seen Zeno, Charlie, and Bertie when we left, they could not stop crying from being separated from each other,” laughed Isabella as she remembered the small memory.
“I wish I could’ve been there, really, but I had to greet the French President Macron. I remember when you and Marie Gabrielle was born now you two have children of your own. Besides you and your sisters, Elle is one of my only nieces to have a family of their own,” said Henri.
“Thank you for calling me. And thank you for trying to do something for my sons. It shows me how much you care for them.”
“Many don’t understand us or the way we live. I married for love back when it was shamed upon and many suffered the consequences of my actions but I don’t regret a single thing. They don’t understand what it’s like to descend from such a bloodline and in your case, two great bloodlines. There are pressures in which very few understand. I hope you know Luxembourg will always be open to you and your children for however long you need,” assured Henri.
“Thank you, uncle. I hope you would come to visit me in London whenever you can. I hope there will be a state visit from Luxembourg in the future.”
“Never forget who you are. I will always remember when you were barely knees height and asked me how I reign in Luxembourg. You advised me when my own people would not dare tell me what is on their mind. You are your mother’s daughter, and I pray for you, we all do.”
“Goodbye, uncle.”
“Goodbye, Belle.”
While tears came out of her eyes, Isabella looked around the room to find herself alone. She had pushed others away so much and angered those who only wished to help her. In a time like these, she turned to the only person she knew would listen to her.
The phone rung once before Isabella listened to the husky voice on the other side, “Belle, what’s wrong?”
“I’m sorry for calling so late,” apologized Isabella.
“It’s fine. I know it’s important or else you wouldn’t be calling.”
“When we were younger how did you deal with me?” asked Isabella.
Joachim had chuckled on the other end, “I don’t understand what you are asking.”
“My moods. You remember them and how one day it was anger then the next everything was fine between us. How did you deal with me?” asked Isabella.
“Simple. I was in love with you and didn’t care for any of that.”
“Besides that. You stuck by me all these years.”
“I won’t have the answers you are looking for Belle. Perhaps talking with someone from Sevenoaks or your friends from the states could answer your questions?”
“But will they be honest with me like you have been all our lives?” asked Isabella.
“I don’t know Belle, what do you want me to say?”
“Is there something wrong with me?”
“There is nothing wrong with you,” answered Joachim.
“I’ll be in Geneva at the end of October. I have to stay here in London for some time to do some work but I hope to see you there.”
“You want me to visit you?”
“Yes. You are the only one who truly understands me,” replied Isabella.
“What about your husband?”
“He would rather leave me alone than deal with me. He doesn’t love me, he doesn’t care for me, not in the way you do,” whimpered Isabella. She was holding back both tears and words.
“Belle, I don’t think you are thinking straight. I think you are trying to say something but it won’t be good for anyone. We should forget this conversation ever happened,” said Joachim.
“You’re abandoning me aren’t you?” asked Isabella as the tears finally came and her voice cracked as well not knowing what he was going to say next.
“Never, but you could never look to the future. You lived in the moment and many times it made things worse. I’m trying to protect you like I have always done since we were small children running around the châteaus and castles of Europe. You should get some sleep, it’ll make things better and you will have a clear head.”
“I love you,” whispered Isabella.
There was no reply and Joachim hung up on her. The tears blurred her vision and Isabella grasped her at chest. A loud scream escaped her mouth before she started destroying the room. There was broken glass and things were scattered everywhere. Harry and her ladies came running into the room to find Isabella on her knees screaming and crying.
Olympia and Gaelle rushed back to the other room to care to Charles and Albert who were now crying because they had been woken up from their nap. Christine got on her knees in front of Isabella bringing her close to her chest and the younger girl sobbed. Charlotte and Harry stood next to each other unsure of what to do.
It had been hours until Isabella laid collapsed in Christine’s arms. The older woman was brushing away the hair in Isabella’s face while humming a lullaby. Harry would only look at Isabella in such disbelief. The girl he knew before the marriage had disappeared and the woman he looked at right now seemed like someone else. Since their sons were born, nothing had ever been the same.
“What should I do?” asked Christine looking up at Harry and Charlotte.
“Leave her in her room. She woke up the boys and I don’t want this to be an occurrence. Keep an eye on her,” answered Harry.
Throughout the night Isabella had woken up in sobs only be a be rocked and sung to by Christine. Every once in a while, Isabella would mummer that something was wrong with her and the older woman could only shush her and tell her how beautiful and strong she was. Harry would hear Isabella’s sobs but did nothing. There were times in his life that he felt hopeless but hearing and seeing what his young wife was going through left him feeling worse than ever before.

I guess I’m fully committed to writing about :Re s2 now, since I have a lot of thoughts about episode 15, lol. Mostly good ones, though.
Thoughts under the cut [and spoilers for the entirety of :re].
In general, this episode adapted slightly more than I expected it to, but only a little bit. I’m slightly sad that it looks like the whole Cochlea/Rushima arc will be wrapped up by the end of the next episode, but with this sort of pacing it makes sense, and I have a lot of faith that they’ll handle it well. There’s also some ways I can see it getting trimmed down to fit well enough into one episode, but I’ll get into that later.
Firstly, I’m really happy they added in that scene of Hide heading onto the CCG’s boat. I’m pretty sure we didn’t get anything like that in the manga, and we kinda just had to guess at what he was up to during all this. I always disliked how coy Ishida tried to be about what Hide was up to in this arc, so I appreciate that it looks like the anime’s being more transparent about it. Hopefully this little addition is hinting at the idea that they’ll explicitly make it clear that Scarecrow is Hide in the next episode. That’s something that really should have been made clear immediately in the manga, since the upcoming scene with Marude and Yoshitoki literally spells out that Hide’s still alive, but Ishida kept being coy and evasive about it until like 40+ chapters after this point. Yes, I’m still bitter about that, lol.
On the note of Hide, I wonder if they’re going to include the flashback scene that shows him, as Scarecrow, breaking Amon out of the Aogiri base on Rushima. On the one hand, it’s pretty important at explaining that detail of what Amon’s been up to, but on the other hand, it pretty much never comes up again a single time, not even once Amon and Hide are back in the story and literally working together and talking to each other, so I’m not entirely sure if it’s even worth including. I’d prefer them to keep it and just take some additional steps to actually explain what the heck was going on with all that, and how Hide knew about the Rushima base in the first place. But I guess we’ll see.
And while I’m at it, I think I forgot to mention in my post about episode 14 that, since the chorus scene of the OP shows Kaneki in the environment he was in when he talked to his hallucination of Hide, I’m still pretty sure that the part right after that is meant to be him and Hide reaching their hands out to each other.
Anyway, back onto the episode itself, I feel a bit vindicated about how they did indeed go back to adapt at least most of the Rushima stuff from the end of volume 6 that they’d previously skipped past. So we actually got to see how Mutsuki ended up captured by Torso, and whatnot. I have a few minor issues with how they handled it, like how they didn’t explain that Mutsuki had transferred over to the Hachikawa squad, and that they cut the part where he talks to Hogi and thinks about Kaneki for a bit, but it’s all pretty minor.
It also would have been nice if they at least named the new Qs members, but that probably would have just felt annoying to anime-only people especially, to have lots of names suddenly popping up on the screen. It still gets across just fine that they’re just new members of the squad, at least.
It’s been a while since I read this arc, so I might be forgetting stuff, but aside from that, I think the only real thing they cut was the exposition about Miza’s clan, but I’m honestly happy they cut that. It felt really randomly thrown in when it happened in the manga, it never comes up again, and I’m still kinda reeling about the casual reveal of there being a clan of underground ghoul dwarf people.
I’m actually slightly surprised at how faithfully they adapted everything else. I wouldn’t have been surprised if they had trimmed down or removed some of the fight scenes in this episode, but I’m glad they didn’t. I mean, some minor things did get shortened, like how they basically removed the whole sequence of the Suzuya squad laughing at Kurona when she thinks that Suzuya was dead, but that’s incredibly minor, so I’m not complaining.
I should probably wait to see how the next episode goes to see for sure, but it looks like the anime might be outright removing the whole plot point of Koma and Irimi coming back into the story because apparently they didn’t die at the end of the first series I guess. I’d be really, really happy if they remove that, since it was always a really frustrating part of the manga that was a big part of why so many people have always complained at how :re ‘just keeps bringing characters back from the dead’. They were some of the worst cases of that, since they literally did NOTHING after coming back into the story, and were basically just there to force the image of the Anteiku crew getting back together.
I was holding out some hope that they’d add some anime-original stuff related to Shirazu, along the lines of us seeing him as a Kanou-made zombie quinque thing so that the Qs can fight him and get some resolution to that whole plot point, but oh well. It’s at least perfectly faithful to the manga that nothing like that happens, lol.
The Tatara fight scene looked pretty neat in action. I’m still slightly baffled by the entire concept of a flame-spewing kakuja, but it at least looks cool. It’s a bit surprising that the anime decided to have the flames be blue, but it actually works pretty well with the show’s overall colour palette.
I have a feeling some anime-only people are going to think that the history between Tatara and Houji that gets referenced in this episode is something that the manga went into more detail about, and that the anime cut, but not really. At most the anime just didn’t mention the name of the ghoul gang that Tatara’s brother ran, but that’s pretty much it. I remember this being one of the first parts I witnessed where people reading the manga were really disappointed by how it played out, since even in the manga it felt like such a weak, short-lived resolution to a whole background plot that never gets explored. I just wanna make that one clear for everyone, haha.
Back on the topic of stuff I wish the anime could do differently, it’d be great if they just outright kill Kanou off in this arc, since he serves basically zero purpose in the entire rest of the story, but at this point I’m not expecting them to. Oh well.
As I said before, it looks like the next episode is more or less going to adapt up to the end of the whole Cochlea/Rushima arc, so I’m curious to see how that pans out, since it still feels like there’s a fair bit left to adapt. But since this episode included stuff like a good amount of the action at Kanou’s lab, there’s actually a bit less to cover than I initially expected.
To start with, I’m expecting some changes overall to how the stuff with Mutsuki and Torso is handled. Which I think should be good. Especially in hindsight, the way Ishida handled this whole plot point was a really ill omen for what was to come later in the story, so it’d be great if they change it. Specifically, I think the manga went too far in making Torso look sympathetic, and in making Mutsuki look evil. They spent way too long on Torso’s tragic backstory, and they put way too much emphasis on the whole reveal of Mutsuki having severe issues with violence and psychosis. I have a feeling that the anime will handle that pretty differently, though. For one thing I don’t think they’ll have time to even go over Torso’s backstory to the same extent the manga did, and even thus far the anime has consistently made Torso more outright menacing and villainous than he was in the manga, and they’ve treated Mutsuki with a lot more respect than the manga did, at least by this point. Even in this episode alone, Torso was way more creepy and evil than he was in the manga, so I think that bodes well for the next episode.
It’s also interesting to me that they removed the scene where Urie stumbles upon Torso’s dismembered corpse in the cave while we as the readers were still left hanging about what happened between him and Mutsuki. It implies that they might be treating the whole thing with a lot less shock value than the manga did, which would be fantastic. Especially if it tones down the emphasis on Mutsuki being ‘secretly evil and murderous’ or whatever as much as possible. And on a similar note, if the anime still has him joining the Qs in fighting Takizawa, I hope they remove that random bit of genital mutilation because hoo boy that sure was the nail in the coffin in making clear exactly how Ishida was going to handle Mutsuki as a character from then on.
I have a feeling that they’re going to portray Mutsuki as being a lot more sympathetic, even when they flash back to how he killed his family. Which would be nice. For one thing, I’m pretty sure that the manga kept it a secret that in the auction raid arc he ate some dead investigators to heal his wounds, and I think they tried to bring it up here as part of the whole ‘reveal’ of Mutsuki being psychotic, but the anime’s already made it way more clear, in more of a casual and matter of fact way, that that’s what happened, so at the very least they won’t use that as part of some obnoxious ‘he was like this all along!!!’ twist.
It’ll also be interesting to see if they include the flashback to him telling the CCG about his desire to live as a man, since they didn’t cover it way back at the start of s1. I have complicated feelings about that scene, and how it was handled in the manga, so I dunno how I want the anime to handle it. I guess to get straight to the point, I don’t want it to be framed as ‘he’s a cis girl who wants to present as male to avoid sexual violence’, but at the very least, if the anime handles his character way better overall, I’d at least prefer that to how the manga tried to spin it. But I’d prefer it if they just stick to him truly identifying as a man, since, y’know, he does. [As a reminder, the official translation of the series still, as of the most recent volume of :re (volume 6) explicitly says that he ‘was assigned female at birth but decided to transition after joining the Qs’]
As I also said before, I hope they flesh out the scene with Marude and Yoshitoki to be a lot more upfront and transparent about Hide’s involvement in it, but thankfully it looks like that’s what’s gonna happen. Even with just with how this episode added in that short scene of Hide getting onto the boat, that on it’s own would make it much more clear what’s going on. But I do want them to be way more clear that, when Marude talks about having gotten information from Hide, he really does mean that he very recently got information from a very-much-still-alive Hide.
And on that note, if they at least keep that whole detail of him having given Marude the info about how the RC Gates work which lead him to figuring out the truth about the Washuus being ghouls, it’d just make it even more obvious that Hide has a serious connection to Aogiri, or at least with Eto specifically. Especially since the anime kept the scene where Eto talks about the whole RC Gate thing with Kaneki, and how that ties into the Washuus being ghouls. So it’d be even more obvious in the anime that it’s just suspiciously coincidental that both of them would know that big of highly confidential information and use it for similar goals of trying to take down V. And of course there’s also the fact that they might include the flashback to Hide rescuing Amon from Rushima, which would really just beg the question of what the heck’s going on with him. [Hint hint: the manga literally never bothers explaining any of it, but hopefully the anime will :)]
It’ll be interesting to see how they handle the final Cochlea scenes, especially since the preview stuff doesn’t show a whole lot of it, and doesn’t show anything to do with Kaneki. I still assume that they’re going to include the entire rest of the arc, since there’s only like three or four chapters of material left to adapt in terms of it. I think it’ll probably be handled faithfully enough, though the stuff with Touka and co fighting some of the other CCG people as they escape Cochlea might get shortened a lot, or basically done off-screen. I guess we’ll see.
Other than that, I’m still really, really curious to see how the heck they go about adapting the final arcs of the series. To put it into perspective, if they wrap up this whole arc in the next episode, then after that they’ll have eight episodes to adapt seven volumes of material [and the final volume is really long so it averages out to being very nearly one volume per episode anyway]. And honestly I just have no clue how they’re gonna work with it, and it feels kinda pointless to try guessing at this point.
I still do think that a lot of the stuff from the next major story arc can be outright removed, though, or at least heavily shortened. And I’d be thankful for it, since this is when the manga got really aimless and bloated. It’s in dire need of some strict editing.
At the very least, I think they could remove nearly everything to do with where Mutsuki’s character goes after this, which could save on a lot of time, even during the final arc of the story, since that involved an obnoxious amount of time being spent on having it get very clumsily resolved at the last minute.
But other than that it’s just kinda hard to say, and I think I’ll just wait until we actually get into the next part of the story before talking about it much.
I think they’ll probably spent five episodes on the Goat arc, and three on the Dragon arc, but we’ll see.
Also, I’ve been thinking about how the anime removed the references to Kaneki’s new reputation as the CCG’s Black Reaper, and I really think I like how they handled it. It was the sort of thing that felt disappointingly short-lived and unexplored in the manga, given that after the timeskip, Kaneki almost immediately abandons the CCG anyway, so we get all of like one scene of him actually doing stuff as the Black Reaper. I can’t blame anyone for being disappointed by how it got glossed over in the anime, but I think it works pretty well.
All in all, I’m still enjoying this way more than I ever expected to, and I genuinely do think it’s fixing a lot of the issues I had with the manga. It still hinges a lot on if they can stick the landing and handle the rest of the season well, though.

❊ LEGEND OF THE BLUE SEA (!!!) ❊
RATING: 50/10
(Yes, here I am again with my weird ratings. You know it’s a good show when I have the most abnormal ratings.)
Honestly. I regret writing this critique once I started watching W. I feel the need to rewatch this show again. I watch dramas way too fast that I barely get to absorb what's going on.
WOW. I NEED TO TAKE A BREATHER. OK. BUT. I WILL EXTORT WHATEVER FANGIRLING IS LEFT IN ME.
So. LEGEND OF THE BLUE SEA WAS SO BOMB. YO. As I mention in my previous reviews, I do really enjoy dramas that have scenes that make you so giddy you literally jump of the bed. AND THIS SHOW DIDN'T JUST MAKE ME JUMP OFF THE BED. NO. I GOT UP FROM MY BED. STARTED JUMPING UP AND DOWN WHILE SCREAMING. HONESTLY. I was crazy while watching this drama.
But wow. The first episode had me hooked. I laughed so hard in the first episode, and was giddy the entire time. SO. Imagine how much I immediately LOVED this show. At first, I couldn’t understand the plot because it started off with a historical scene. BUT of course it’s always like that when you start a show. I was able to pick up the plot quickly. And wow. The plot was amazing. I liked how whatever happened in the history became parallel with the present. I loved the plot soooooo much. It was very different from the previous dramas I’ve watched, and I loved it. Surprisingly, this is my first fantasy (that's what they call the genre that incorporates unrealistic factors) drama. I was so hesitant on watching this because I was really not a big fan of fantasy dramas. I was more into the school and realistic dramas. However, after my friend who also watches kdramas found out I absolutely loved Lee Min Ho, she said that I should really watch Legend of the Blue Sea. And because I was so in love (still am) with Lee Min Ho, I decided to try it out. And I really don’t regret trying out fantasy dramas. I am so happy I tried watching this show, because now I am very open-minded about the genres of kdramas that I will watch. [Hence, why I am watching W - Two Worlds]
OKAY. Going back to the plot, wow. OKAY. Let me talk about the first episode, excluding the first historical scene. I was screaming in the first episode probably every minute. LEE MIN HO LOOKED SOOOOOOO GOOD. I LOVED THAT HE WAS A CON-ARTIST. IT MADE HIM SO MUCH HOTTER. YO. EVEN THE FACTOR OF CLOTHING FOR THE SHOW MADE IT SO MUCH BETTER. LEE MIN HO LOOKED SO GOOD. THE SCENE WHEN HE CHANGED FROM AN OUTFIT SIMILAR TO A JANITOR’S OR AN ELECTRICAL SUPERVISOR’S TO A WHITE COLLAR BUTTON DOWN MANAGER LOOK (SO MANY WORDS OMG), AND WHEN HE FIXED HIS HAIR. I HONESTLY DIED. I HAVE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS JUST TO EXPRESS MY UTTERMOST EMOTION FOR THIS SHOW BECAUSE HONESTLY, I DIED IN EVERY SCENE LEE MIN HO WAS PRESENT IN.
AND IN THE FIRST EPISODE, Kim Tan’s (yes, Kim Tan from the Heirs) legit mom was a character and I screamed because THE HEIR’S REUNION (!!!!!!!!!) ANOTHER SHOW THAT I LOVE AND ANOTHER SHOW WITH LEE MIN HO IN IT (!!!!!!!!!)
Lee Min Ho played his role so well. One minute he was this cunning con-artist, and the next he was this EXTREMELY lovey-dovey boy that I really love. I have so much appreciation for him in this series. Ugh. I LOVE HIM.
And of course, WE CANNOT FORGET THE BEAUTIFUL JUN JI HYUN who beautifully and remarkably played Shim Cheong. I honestly didn’t know what Shim Cheong was in English, since they never mentioned the definition in the show. But, my friend told me the literally meaning, and it made so much sense now (for those of you who don’t know, it means stupid in English). Because in that scene, when the whole ‘con-artist crew’ (as I call it) was thinking of a name for Shim Cheong, that was what they came up with. Thinking about it just really makes me laugh. It was such a clever name.
And wow. Jun Ji Hyun played the role of Shim Cheong soooo well. For those who don’t know, Shim Cheong is actually a mermaid who first comes into land. But, being born and raised in the water, she does not know the culture and norms of those on land. Therefore, she does not know how to act--or even eat for this matter. And Jun Ji Hyun was able to portray this inexperience as mentioned above. ESPECIALLY IN THE FIRST EPISODE when they were crossing the street, and when they were eating pasta. LITERALLY I AM SHIM CHEONG (excluding her amazing body). SHE EATS EVERYTHING. SHE IS CLUMSY. SHE BINGE WATCHES MOVIES AND DRAMAS EVERY NIGHT. I RELATE TO HER SO MUCH (no wonder I love this character so much).
AND CAN WE JUST. JUN JI HYUN JUST GAVE BIRTH TO A CHILD. HOW CAN HER BODY BE THAT WOW??? SHE LOOKED SO ELEGANT AS A MERMAID. And can we just commend her--SHE LITERALLY SWAM IN THE OCEAN. ALL THE OCEAN SCENES WERE SHOT IN A LITERAL OCEAN. UGH. SHE’S AMAZING. I HAVE SO MUCH RESPECT AND ADMIRATION FOR HER.
OMG. I also love the scene where Shim Cheong found out that Joon Jae likes her and she was practically screaming “Joon Jae likes me!” multiple times in her head. YO. SHE IS ME. I AM HER. And then Joon Jae could hear her inside voice, and he kept laughing and smiling. AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WAS EVERYTHING. I LOVED THEIR RELATIONSHIP. I WAS TORN WHEN SHIM CHEONG KISSED JOON JAE JUST FOR HIM TO FORGET ABOUT THEIR MOMENTS TOGETHER.
Honestly. Romance aside, this show was so freaking funny. When Joon Jae was being the con-artist he was, and pretended to be the son of the manager of a hospital (I think) and he was like “Disgusting. Sh**!” I LAUGHED SO HARD. I LOVE HIM. SO MUCH. THAT PART WAS HONESTLY THE FUNNIEST.
I just love the relationship of Joon Jae and Shim Cheong so much. Their romance just contained so much loyalty, and appreciation for one another. They always wanted to protect each other (like when Shim Cheong took the bullet for Joon Jae--YO I WAS SO WORRIED SHE WAS GONNA DIE).
And the last episode. WOW. I was just. YO. I had no words for the last episode. It was so satisfying. They got married, and Shim Cheong was pregnant. And they lived near the sea. OH OMG and the previous episodes before this. YO. YO. When Joon Jae already planned their future together by looking for houses near the sea and HAKDBAKDASHBDH I CANT EVEN SPEAK. THE LEGEND OF THE BLUE SEA FANGIRL IS STILL IN ME. BUT THE LAST EPISODE IS SO SATISFYING. I LOVED IT.
And Rin-ah, the kid who could hear Shim Cheong’s mermaid voice, WAS SO CUTE. LIKE I LITERALLY WANT TO SQUISH HER AND PUT HER IN A BAG. UGH. I WANNA PINCH HER CHEEKS (!!!!!).
AND OMG. THE SECOND COUPLE IN LOTBS--SHI-AH AND TAE-OH. YO. I FREAKIN LOVED THEM. I LAUGHED SO HARD WHEN TAE-OH HAD TO COVER FOR JOON JAE, SHIM CHEONG, AND NAM DOO WHEN THEY WERE IN SHI-AH’S HOUSE AND HE SAID “SARANGHAE.” THAT WAS THE START OF A BEAUTIFUL RELATIONSHIP. And then Shi-Ah didn’t know that he was just covering for them, and then went on thinking that Tae-Oh actually liked her. I honestly looked forward to their scenes. AND EVENTUALLY THEY FELL IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER. AND SHI-AH WANTED TO MARRY TAE-OH IN ONE OF THE LAST FEW EPISODES. THEY WERE SO CUTE. AND WHEN THEY WERE IN THE BUS, AND SHI-AH PLACED HER HEAD ON TAE-OH’S SHOULDER. THERE WERE SO MANY SCENES OF THEM. I WAS GIDDY AND LAUGHING AT THEM ALL. I LOVE THEM.
I mostly covered the first episode in this review, but that’s just how good this show is. I LITERALLY SPOKE ABOUT THE FIRST EPISODE ONLY, AND THIS IS PROBABLY THE LONGEST REVIEW I’VE DONE. AND ITS ONLY THE FIRST EPISODE (AND SOME SCENES).
AND! The show had so many inspirational lines, and scenes. I can’t name them as I forgot them, due to the great number of these scenes. But I’m so sure you’ll learn at least one lesson from the show.
THERE IS EVEN SUSPENSE. I DON’T WANT TO GO INTO DETAIL. BUT THERE IS. AND WOW. I WAS SHOOKT.
I wish I could talk and fangirl more about this show, but honestly I might as well make a novel (LOL). But, really, I would highly recommend this show to all the kdrama watchers out there. If you’re looking for a fantasy, exciting, suspense, romance, and comedy drama, then most definitely watch this. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SHOW.
