More specifically, we were able to increase the turnover after the stall owner and I divided the work among ourselves. We managed to clear the long line that had formed before I arrived in just thirty minutes―

And now that stall owner’s acquaintance has rushed over to help, I’m relieved of my duties now! All’s well that ends well! ☆

And as a token of appreciation for my assistance, the stall owner has given me some taiyaki too.

"This is my favorite whiskey. I got it as a gift from a good friend in Japan once. It's a light whiskey, with mild dried fruit, a bit spicy, but everything is in balance. I brought a flavor with toffee in it. It's good when you want to relax and not necessarily get drunk, so I thought it would be a good start."

"If this was an advertisement for this product, I would definitely buy it!"

"Oh, thank you! I don't have many opportunities to drink alcohol for fun, so sometimes I just drink something light, mostly with Minho."

Anzu knows she’s always been off-putting.

People find her too blunt, too straight-forward, too robotic. Because sometimes there are situations that are chock-full of emotions. Where tensions are running high, and tempers are close to fraying. And the thing is, see, that Anzu just doesn’t get it. It’s not all that difficult to understand, sure. Chemicals and reactions and hormones. Normal stuff you’d expect from a bunch of teenagers packed together in an enclosed space.

But what she can’t decipher is how anyone could let those things control their actions. It’s an entirely foreign concept to her. To feel enough for something that it changes the way you think and act…well, for someone who prides herself on her level-headedness, it’s unthinkable.

Trickstar was a start.

Four boys who all felt so much. Four boys who made her feel too. It’s what gave her the strength to push through.

Still, it wasn’t a huge change. It was barely-there, and Anzu can tell that while some people have picked up on it–on her–they tend to be in the minority. Because there’s nothing in the world so far that has made her react outwardly.

Nothing until you.

The first time Anzu lays eyes on you, she drops a stack of papers onto the floor. They explode in a burst of white–not unlike Hibiki-senpai’s dove feathers scattering everywhere. Hokuto-kun looks at her with concern, but she’s too busy gaping in shock. There’s colour rising in her cheeks and her heart is jackrabbiting in her chest and that’s…never happened before.

Your fingers brush, a little, as you both bend down to pick up some fallen sheets, and Anzu swears there are fireworks trapped behind her ribcage that are attempting to be set free.

“Are you okay?”

“I…” Anzu stares at you blankly, captivated by your face. She was supposed to say something, she knows, but she can’t remember what it was. She’s fine, Hokuto-kun answers for her, pushing her aside the way they’d practiced before, a crash course in what to do when she gets overwhelmed. Normally, she’d appreciate it but right now? She feels miffed. Just a little bit…

“Oh, well, I’m glad.” You giggle softly, and Anzu feels her cheeks heat up. What in the…? “We wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to such a cute and hardworking girl, right?”

Unable to properly produce any words, she simply nods, a little shell-shocked.

“Then… I’d best be off! I’ll see you around, okay?”

“Y-yeah…” Anzu attempts a smile. You smile back, brighter then the fucking sun, blowing her a kiss as you jog down the hallway. She flushes as her brain goes in circles as it tries to articulate how to respond, before simply waving at your retreating back, albeit a little weakly.

“What was that about?” Hokuto-kun mutters, a tad confused, but Anzu is too busy pondering. Red cheeks…elevated heart rate…stammering…butterflies in her stomach… All those signs (and more) point to only one thing.

Oh my god, she thinks. I have a crush.

Favorite and least favorite Blazblue characters?

Yay~ finally getting to this ask. I’ve got a lot of really cool asks (thank you everyone so much) that I’ve been wanting to get to, but my health is Rather Poor, and when I do answer these things, I want to be able to put a lot of energy and attention into them.

Now, getting to the ask! I had a lot to say, and it all came out messy... and somehow, I only ended up talking about one character, Nu 13. Who fits as both one of my favorite and one of my least favorite characters, for reasons detailed below. To not make this an entire fucking novel, I'll cut the post off here and consider it an early birthday post for her.

That said, here's a quick run down of some other stuff I didn't get to talk about, relevant to your question.

My other Hated Fave is Nine/Konoe. One of those “I love the character but if we were stuck in a room together I’d maul her” situations. I consider her to be a misandrist, and I have a very charged history of like, generational reactive sexism in my family, so her generational reactive sexism (relationship with her father coloring her relationship with men overall) enrages me. On the other hand, it’s so well written, SHE’S so well written, she’s an incredible character and I adore her as an art piece. She is like a cathedral to me. The most beautiful symphony in a key you hate.

Touched on briefly in the post below, my all time absolute favorite is Terumi/Susano'o. That's a story for another day. I like him in a very particular way where he's like, the best character ever, but also he's constantly on probation. Or reverse probation? I need to see him try to kill/maim/ruin someone once a month or he's at risk of being evicted. Being the champion is a title you have to defend, y'know?

I think the character I study the most and talk about the most is Noel, although to my tastes, she's very middle of the road. I feel neutral about her. I just use her as a guinea pig for all my BB related project. You know Dangan Ronpa? How they used Sayaka and Leon as a starting point/beta test for everything? It's kind of like that, except I haven't gotten so sick of her yet that I'm killing her off or anything.

With all of that covered, allow me to get into the actual post! Thank you for your patience!

Off the top of my head at least, I can’t honestly think of BlazBlue characters I dislike. Every character that comes to mind shares something that makes me hesitant to actually claim I dislike them. That is, the characters I like the least are the characters I understand the least. Spinner Superior and the entire Bloodedge Experience cast make the list… but I haven’t read BE. Valkenhayn makes the cut- another character I really don’t pay attention to. Bullet, Hibiki, maybe Amane- all characters I really just… haven’t paid much attention to yet.

I don’t really want to claim I dislike them at this point, because when I really think about it, I’m like 99% sure that I lack interest in them BECAUSE I haven’t taken the time to look at them.

One of my hobby/goal/things in my free time is working on these BB character documents, analyzing everything I can about each character in the series for my own personal work. I have a feeling that when I get to really analyzing and writing about these characters, I’ll find things I like about them.

Here's a quick look at my files, to see what I'm talking about. Have mercy, it's very WIP.

There are two characters that stand out to me in an… almost “love to hate” way, but not quite. I have a lot to say about these characters, but I’m still tired, and this post is going to be LONG as is, so I’ll try to keep it brief.

Author's Note: I fail to keep it brief.

Before BBDW, my least favorite character was DEFINITELY Nu13. Ironic, because she almost got me into BB back in the Continuum Shift days. I saw her and some of her crazy behavior and thought... well, not much, just kind of an error message in my head going “hot woman spotted.” So I looked into her, and her story!

And got bored immediately. At first I was intrigued- I love violent characters that could arguably be described as “rabid” or “feral,” but upon further inspection, she had one of the few character flaws I just can’t look past. She was absolutely static. Immutable. The only character she was willing to interact with was Ragna, and even when interacting with him, she couldn’t hear a thing he said. In my interpretation, at the time, this made her a character that couldn’t connect with the outside world in any way. To me, she was an island. Absolutely remote. And completely useless to my interests.

A fear years later, a few months before the launch of Chronophantasma Extend, I ended up getting into BlazBlue anyway powered by sheer Terumi thirst. Are you guys starting to get a picture of my type yet? From then on, BB has remained my all time favorite series, and Terumi/Susano’o continues to be in my top three favorite characters, usually comfortably wearing the “#1 all time fave” crown. I suppose that answers the other half of your question.

Throughout this time, Nu still didn’t appeal to me at all. Locked in as my least favorite, definitely. Eventually, I got my college roommates into BB. One of the girls fell in absolute love with Nu. I couldn’t understand it at all. In hindsight, she’s right on every point about Nu that she likes, and I really appreciate those traits now too- but I couldn’t see it at the time. She was able to see Nu as an incredibly tragic character for the same reasons I saw her as inert. In the C-Series, Nu is alone, horribly alone, locked in her pain and her delusion. I saw that and ultimately felt she was beyond saving, but my associate felt that made her into a beautiful tragedy, a princess more worth saving than any other. Maybe I’m getting a little abstract out of nowhere here, but I now feel that’s the best way to look at Nu’s story- she’s locked away in this fairy tale delusion. Ugh, I have more to say on it, but look at how long this has gotten already!

Anyways, then BBDW came out, and Mori gave us a glimpse of what he intended to be the next step in Nu’s story. Juusan, XIII, Thirteen. And hooooooooooooly shit my guys, I absolutely love Nu, XIII, and her arc now. It’s her fucking healing arc! It’s her fucking growing arc! She’s finally able to start becoming a person, fleshing out, interacting with the world!

I’m not the type who really needs or even WANTS redemption arcs for characters, but Nu DESPERATELY needed this chapter. My biggest gripe with her, as mentioned, was that it seemed impossible for her to have any kind of relationship with ANYONE. I guess I was a little close minded- I needed to see evidence that Nu could be reached, that she could wake up from her fairy tale slumber and start really living. And we have that now, in XIII.

Looking back on the writing from the earlier games, when I hated Nu so much, I see those scenes in an entirely different light. Her first fucking scene in every route is waking up, our sleeping beauty. But she wakes up to the same dream every time. She’s put right back into her coffin, death, to dream and dream and wake and be killed again. Isn’t that kind of beautiful??? Her CT story mode IS a dream, it’s a desperate dream, the one she holds most dearly but doesn’t even understand- Nu is a character who THINKS what she wants more than anything is a romantic love with her prince charming, but we see in her story mode there, and in the relationships that finally save her, that what she really wanted was a full relationship as a real person. Platonic relationships, with no expectations, just someone seeing her and maybe offering her a smile. She craved, needed, the ability to connect with others, but that was a dream so far out of reach she couldn’t understand it. I KNOW I’M RAVING AT THIS POINT, I DIDN’T MEAN TO, BUT C’MON IT’S BEAUTIFUL.

And, and!!! As I mentioned, the relationships that finally save her, finally wake her up from the dream the same way the BB world is being woken up from ITS looping dream (WHICH IS ANOTHER AWESOME CONNECTION AND GREAT WRITING, THE WAY NU AS A CHARACTER CAN BE SEEN TO EMBODY THE LOOPING WORLD, NEW AND BROKEN AND UNABLE TO CHANGE WITH NO HOPE OF TOMORROW)

Ahem, ahem-- It’s familial connections. She so badly wants that romance with Ragna, but it isn’t the love of a prince that saves her- it’s when he accepts her as his sister. It’s when he accepts her as a victim and her own person and not a bastardization of Saya, and comes to save this lonely girl. An echo of his little sister he couldn’t save. HIS ENTIRE JOURNEY WAS TO SAVE HIS SISTER AND HE FINALLY DOES. IN SO MANY WAYS, INCLUDING IN THAT MOMENT OF REACHING OUT TO NU.

And then it’s Noel. And Lamba. Her sisters. Again, people who once saw her as a disgusting representation of what they feared the most, a replacement or a copy- when they let that go, see past it, and really face her, they take Nu in as their little sister. And its their patient love that heals her. Just like Ragna, when they first met Nu, her connection to Saya and themselves terrified them, infuriated them, but now they look directly at that connection and don’t see it as a threat. It fills them with compassion. It can be a lovely thing, to share something so fundamental as your creation with someone else. There’s love in that. They see it now and are able to offer it to her.

This answer has been very messy and very long, but hey, let’s pretend it isn’t that bad. Give me some mercy, I’m on so much cough syrup.

Why is Nikei’s so damn corny-

Nikei Yomiuri:

A prince?? At Hope's Peak? What a scoop!!

For a while, this man does not leave you alone! It’s like having your own paparazzi…

You act polite and well mannered as usual but… Nikei notices that you’re gradually becoming more uncomfortable with him. Was it his perverted comments?

Eventually, you decide to give it to him straight (the only straight thing you’ll ever give him) and tell him that you just want to befriend him without either of your ultimates interfering.

Nikei’s life and hobbies revolve around his talent, and you just want to throw yours away? He doesn’t really understand, until you ask if you can interview him.

“Hmm.. I haven’t been interviewed before! What do you want to ask?”

“Besides writing and journalism, what do you like to do in your free time?”

“…”

Yeah, you got him there. When Nikei reveals how journalism is his everything, you tell him that you know how he feels, spending your childhood learning over 40 languages and proper etiquette.

“But…my parents let me take a break from that. And now I’m happier then I’ve ever been, and I’m seeing things…and feeling things…that I’ve never felt before!” You didn’t even realize that you put your hands on his shoulders until you noticed his red face. 

Swayed by the sparkling and stars in your eyes, Nikei could only sigh to himself. Journalism was what he considered to be the only thing he was good at, but how would he know if he didn’t try anything else? 

You extended your hand, gently holding his in yours, and took him for a walk around the island. Perhaps it was because you were holding hands, or that his head was always in his notepad when he walked this path, but he felt himself experiencing the familiar sights for the first time all over again

With your differences in lifestyles and Nikei’s drive for working, it would be awhile before one of you confessed, but until then, the two of you would experience the world for yourselves, away from the comforting yet obstructing umbrellas of your talents

And together, the two of you step into the warm rain and sunlight, hand in hand

Yuki Maeda:

When he met you, he had no idea what to do, so he just awkwardly bowed

Yuki was pleasantly surprised to learn that you were much more humble than most royals, asking him to address you by name

He was drawn to your kindness and manners, despite your bluntness catching him off guard at times, the two of you were fast friends

"H-Hey! Y/n, wanna hang out with me, today?"

He was completely oblivious to his own feelings, and invited you to train with him and Shinji. As he stood on the warm sand, watching you playing in the water, his feelings hit him all at once

Seeing you in the school swimsuit, a giant smile plastered on your face... he buried his face in the nearest towel, and Sora teased him for the rest of the time

That was the one time Yuki was glad you were oblivious

It wasn't long before the others caught on to his feelings, as he was a terrible liar. Shinji and Hajime cheered him on while Setuka and Hibiki teased him over you

Yuki wouldn't confess first. There was no way you would return his feelings, after all.

You were a handsome prince, perfect in every way... and Yuki was just an ordinary kid. How could you ever like someone as plain and boring as him?

Little did he know, you loved him as much as he loved you. His sweetness, his kindness, his clumsiness... what was there not to like? 

When you confessed your feelings to him, that was all you could tell him. How in your eyes, he was perfect the way he is

"Y-Y/n...Y-You.." He stammered. He couldn't believe it, "You really like me, too...? Cause...! I'm really nothing special! I-"

You cupped him cheek and brought your lips to his. You were so soft, warm, muscular... Yuki didn't want to let you go. 

So he didn't, only pulling you closer

Syobai Hashimoto:

A prince, huh? You could be a useful contract...but also very valuable.

He had no interest in being friends with you, but for the right price, he was willing to talk to you 

The fact that you were so kind and oblivious made him believe you were probably sheltered. You knew nothing about the life he lived, and probably thought of him as some cool guard for you, right?

You kept assuring him that you just wanted to be friends, and to forget about your differences. Syobai didn't buy it, but you were exploitable and in his eyes, kinda stupid, so whatever

You tried to ease him into the group, willing to offer nearly any price just for him to make friends with the other idiots. He seriously didn't understand you

You had so much money, a life of luxury and comfort... so what the hell were you doing here? If he had a life like that, he would never leave. Were you just that ungrateful?

"Beat it, Y/n. You're a prince, why associate yourself with a guy like me? If you need my service, just speak up and quit playing friends."

His words stung. You didn't want to play friends, you wanted to be something more...

It took Syobai longer than he'd like to admit to figure out your feelings for him. He considered accepting just so he could marry into royalty. But... then he found himself questioning his own feelings.

You were just an annoying royal nitwit. He only talked to you because you offered him money. You were just someone with money who thought you could control everything. 

He was bullshitting himself and he knew it. Somehow, your kindness and compassion for him gave you a one way ticket to his heart. No matter what he told himself, he knew he didn't want to marry you just for the money. 

His annoyance of it all made him stub out his cigarette. He thought he lost these kinds of feelings years ago. Syobai began to light another cigarette, before throwing the lighter and crushing the cigarette with his foot. 

"Y/n."

You turned around at the sound of his voice. Syobai ordered the same sum of money he would usually ask for to have a conversation with you, so you paid without a second thought.

Grabbing the money, he turned away, his back toward you as he said, 

"One date. This Friday. I'll pick you up at 9. Don't be late."

"H-Huh..?"

You could only stare in awe and he walked away. Picking up the lighter once again, Syobai lit another cigarette, his lips curled into the ghost of a smile.

Shinji Kasai:

Shinji thought it was interesting to have a royal classmate, but he would never treat you differently because of it. He appreciated your humble personality and kindness, happily and loudly offering for you to train with him, Yuki, and Hajime. 

You were much stronger than he thought, being able to keep up with him much better than Yuki did. As Hajime lectured Yuki and Shinji yelled words of encouragement, you gently helped Yuki up and offered him water. 

He felt a pang of jealousy at that, but assumed it was just some kind of muscle soreness

Shinji shared your obliviousness on certain things, but in other situations he found himself completely overthinking. Why was he stuttering so much while talking to you? Did royalty just have that effect?

No…but it definitely had nothing to do with the fact that you were kind and handsome and strong and charming…nothing at all…

It wasn’t until Shinji caught himself staring and blushing at your shirtless form that he considered the idea that he might have a crush on you 

He forced himself to look away. You probably had a lot of suitors, maybe even an arranged fiancé. He wasn’t anything too special, and it was wrong to look at you that way, when you probably only thought of him as an older brother…

Shinji couldn’t have been more surprised when you asked him out, holding a bouquet of roses just for him. His entire face was bright red and he couldn’t even think of a response.

“Y-Y-Y-You….”

“I like you, Shinji. It’s alright if you don’t feel the same-“

“N-No…I….like you too…”

Shinji could barely talk for the rest of the night, but his face still held a giant smile. He would always freeze up or let out a squeak whenever you did something slightly romantic, but you knew he loved it all the same

“H-Hey….Y/n…?”

“Yeah Shinji?”

“I love you…”

You squeezed his hand, feeling it grow warmer.

as it's been a couple of years since i've involved myself in this blog (and there's lots of folks who don't know of hibiki), here is a general timeline for where hibiki is in consideration of the current timeline of the manga.

POST-SHIBUYA TO CULLING GAMES:

> When the curtain falls over Shibuya at 7:00 on Halloween night, Hibiki is in the midst of discussion with the higher-ups of the jujutsu society. After being given permission to leave, they received a phone call from the grade 1 sorcerer Mei Mei. Knowing that they still hold the wealth of the uzumiya clan--- she makes an attempt at a deal with them; which they place on hold for future discussion. From there, at 8:45, they receive another call from Mei Mei-- the discussion ends as she enters the Meiji-jingu Mae station and the two finalize a discussion regarding the state of Hibiki's binding vow.

> At 9:05, Hibiki enters the Shibuya curtain through Shinsen station where they use hand-to-hand combat to rid cursed spirits in the area and direct the remaining civilians out of the now-lifted curtain. Briefly, they make contact with Maki and Naobito Zenin; the former of which they reassure and continue moving forward towards where they presume Gojo Satoru is fighting. There, at the top of the steps of the b5f Fukutoshin line platform, Uzumiya Hibiki meets the false Getou Suguru wielding the prison realm, forcing them to pause. The two share a brief discussion where their inability to use their domain expansion costs them the opportunity to backtrack the usage of the prison realm, freeing Gojo Satoru. Uzumiya Hibiki allows the false Getou to pass, unable to mentally force themselves to harm the body he inhabits; where he commentates on wishing to talk more in the future, of which hibiki wordlessly agrees. The veil lifted; the news of Gojo Satoru's sealing released, Uzumiya Hibiki receives a phone call from the higher-ups to withdraw and spectate. Despite this-- they resist. And somewhere, the false Getou Suguru smiles.

> However, their second resistance in life means nothing as they morph through Shibuya. At 10:52, Uzumiya Hibiki comes upon Jogo as he feeds the final tenth finger to Yuji Itadori-- and wakes Sukuna, who beckons the sorcerer to use their ultimate technique as they take to both knees. Beguiling their inability to do so, the King of Curses laughs and chastises their lack of creativity. Uzumiya Hibiki escapes with their life beyond reason. Mind fractured, they move through the walls of the Shibuya train stations. Watching scores of bodies and fights flit past them, they stumble upon the half-corpse of Nanami Kento. His severed arm and blunt sword beside him. And again, Uzumiya Hibiki's phone rings in their pocket. As Noritoshi Kamo, revealed by Choso, consumes Mahito before Itadori Yuji and is joined by Uraume, Uzumiya Hibiki emerges from the grounds beneath and asks the man one question. "Is it creativity I lack?" When the centuries old sorcerer laughs and remarks "Is that what you want?" The Uzumiya heir freezes. Despite the eyes of their students set upon them, they take Kenjaku's offer and leave with him as he departs Shibuya. The smiling face of a young Suguru Getou still fresh on their mind.

> Now by Kenjaku's side, the higher-ups scramble to make their choice on their binding vow with Uzumiya Hibiki. If they place an execution order on the sorcerer's head, it directly violates their binding vow and opens the usage of their domain expansion on the higher-ups-- but if they simply allow them to live, well... It means immunity to their harm, doesn't it? Despite aligning with the False Getou Suguru, Uzumiya Hibiki is not marked for execution. Instead, an order is placed for their retrieval--- cash prize rising by the days. Mei Mei's call is the first call Hibiki answers since their betrayal and when they hear her smiling words, offering a particularly juicy whisper about a counter deal on their head, they listen. The death of the higher-up who holds onto Uzumiya Hibiki's binding vow for their favor; and whatever protections may be given from it. When a wire transfer arrives in Mei Mei's account later that day, there's nothing but a smile on her face as she accepts it and a stirring tenseness in Hibiki's. Requesting a discussion with Kenjaku, they affirm their desire to enter the Culling Game of which Kenjaku hums with curiosity. After their talk, Hibiki proceeds forth and joins the Culling Games- entering through the Sendai colony. Day one of Uzumiya Hibiki's entrance into the culling games results in no deaths of any participants. Day two of Uzumiya Hibiki's entrance into the culling game results in a total earning of 157 points; the first ever death of a living beings by Uzumiya Hibiki's hand in thirteen years.

CULLING GAMES TO SHINJUKU SHOWDOWN ARC:

> In a haze, Uzumiya Hibiki moves through the Sendai Colony. For the first time in their life, even in perspective of the Uzumiya massacre, they make the choice to kill. For every sorcerer they kill, they question them before they make their killing blow. “Did I show you something you’ve never felt before?” The same question, every time, with every victim; and every answer is noted, kept there locked in their mind and throat. And the bitterness and ecstasy that both comes with it. Briefly, Uzumiya Hibiki makes contact with Kasumi Miwa and they share a brief discussion where without hesitation, the former teacher allows the girl to go. It’s the first time she’s ever seen the teacher with their hair down. After they speak, Hibiki transfers a portion of their points to her without notifying her. Two days later, Uzumiya Hibiki makes contact with Okkotsu Yuta when he enters to disrupt the deadlock and is stopped only by the teenager’s usage of cursed speech. There, Yuta explains to Uzumiya Hibiki their plans on the salvation of Gojo Satoru. Silently, the sorcerer listens. When Yuta’s cursed speech wears off and Uzumiya Hibiki remains still, Yuta continues. Hibiki never speaks. At the end, all the teacher does is pat the boy on the head and continue onwards. Leaving Okkotsu Yuta without a single answer.

> On November 14th, as soldiers by Kenjaku’s influence invade the Tokyo No. 1 colony, a lone soldier invades the Sendai colony from the south and comes upon Uzumiya Hibiki to deliver a message. The soldier dies seconds after. By the message’s contents, the next day, now able to move through colonies due to the addition of a rule by the false Tsumiki, they enter the Tokyo No. 1 colony. There, they are witness to Megumi’s transformation into a vessel for Sukuna. As Hana, the young girl serving as a vessel for Angel, is tricked and mauled by Sukuna, Uzumiya Hibiki catches the young girl’s body as she falls. Placing her in a safe area for retrieval by the Jujutsu Tech sorcerers and slipping a small note into her pocket. Addressed to one Satoru Gojou.

> Exiting out from the Tokyo No. 1 colony, Uzumiya Hibiki meets up with Uraume, Sukuna, and Kenjaku at the Bath. There, they discuss with Kenjaku their impression of Tengen and a possibility they’ve finally questioned. For so long, they’d debated the usage of their Domain Expansion as a means to an end— a killing floor. Yet, taken by Sukuna’s words during Shibuya, they impress upon the fact that they believe now it has a means of creating— of birthing. If Abyssal Origin can revert oneself back to the earliest point of existence, what kind of sorcerer could one create if they were allowed to exist at the furthest point of their existence? They wish to test the theory and they bow their head to request of Sukuna the opportunity to test it on Satoru Gojou. To produce a sorcerer beyond the measure of existence itself for the King of Curses. When the note finally reaches the freed Satoru Gojou, it reads of only three words. “End it all.”

Half-hidden in the shadows cast by the thick velvet curtains, you stand and listen. Comparable to a ghost, or perhaps a phantom, but you’ve never been one for the spotlight.

A little strange for an idol student, yes, but you’ve always known your true calling lay beyond the allure of the stage and what it offered.

Blue flashes in the corner of your vision. You turn your head and your eyes fall upon none other than Hibiki Wataru.

He stands at center stage. An imposing figure; clear-cut, this boy who is not a boy, and even in this dim, empty room—devoid of an audience—he still shines. He recites his lines with vigour, even though they are appreciated by nothing but the empty air.

“And my ending is despair, unless I be relieved by prayer, which pierces so that it assaults mercy itself, and frees all faults. As you from crimes would pardoned be, let your indulgence set me free.”

The Tempest, you think. Shakespeare. Fitting for a genius who will die on this stage, if not a little ironic. But Wataru has always loved his irony. You huff a soft laugh, smothered into your palm. His ears prick up at the sound; like a cat’s, like you knew they would.

Without turning his head away from the rows upon rows of empty seats, he speaks. “How kind of you to join me, my dear. Why don’t you come stand by my side, so that I may appreciate you one last time?”

You step out from your hiding place and onto the wood panelling of the stage, worn beneath your feet, stopping a few paces away from him. “Rather dramatic for a dead man walking, aren’t you?” His eyes narrow for a single moment, before his expression smoothes itself over. You are close enough to touch if he reached out, but not much else.

(He doesn't reach out.)

“Ah, but I’m not dead yet! That is the beauty of life—it always contains a surprise~” He produces from thin air a single red rose that he then presents to you with a bow and a flourish. You take it, charmed despite yourself.

“Hm,” you hide the upwards tilt of your lips behind the luscious petals. “And what reason does the dead man to-be have to be practicing his lines so soon to his closing performance? Nerves? Anxiety getting to you?”

“Haven’t you heard? All the world’s a stage, my dear!”

“As You Like It,” your gaze traces the crooked lines of his smile, searching for…something. Disgruntlement, maybe, or anger. Anything that might signify he has even a scrap of drive left in him, a will to fight back. But his face is an inscrutable mask. “Are you truly content to play along with Tenshouin-kun’s script?”

“Mm,” Wataru hums as he cocks his head to the side, so very like those doves he adores. “I will admit, it was rather hastily made. But beggars can’t be choosers, and I will perform my role as best I can. At the end of this performance, fine will emerge victorious.”

You purse your lips, disappointed yet refusing to show it. “I see.” It seems even now, he is unwilling to dispense with all his theatrics. You turn to leave. This farce has gone on long enough.

“My dear,” his tone gentles. He will not go so far as to plead, but this is something close to it. The closest you will get, perhaps, to hearing him beg. “Please do not be disheartened. While the Hibiki Wataru of the five Eccentrics may be felled today, the Hibiki Wataru of your heart shall live on. After all, the course of true love never did run smooth.”

“...A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” you say, with a roll of your eyes. His expression brightens when you respond, a sign that you are on your way to forgiving him—or, at the very least, you do not despise him enough to refuse him. You would not have played along otherwise. “Yes, I’m aware. But is it too much to hope that things could be simpler, for once?”

“Indeed. However, us five Eccentrics were never destined for simple things. We must reach for the stars, the highest peak we may attain. Amazing ☆! I, for one…” he pauses, gauging your micro-expressions. “Would be honoured to have you watch my final performance. My defeat would not be complete, were you not there to witness my tragic fall. You might even critique it later, if you so wished. What do you say?”

“I…” you hug your arms to your chest. Words fail you. “I don’t…”

He leans closer, his face scant inches away from yours. His eyes reflect the emotions you feel must show in your expression, a mockery of the turmoil swirling in your heart. “You would not deny me your companionship, would you? Consider it my dying wish. Don’t you know? Parting is such sweet sorrow.”

Your lip curls into a faint sneer. “Romeo and Juliet. You know I hate that play. I’m not a fan of when stupidity is fatal.”

“I do,” he agrees easily, a smile on his face. “Apologies, I simply got carried away.” One step forwards. One step back. “Well? What about it? Will you stay?” He takes your hands in his. It would be so easy to accept it…yet something stops you from doing so.

This does not escape his notice. Little does, actually. Wataru sighs, gives a fluid shrug of his shoulders. “Or perhaps, you do not wish to be associated with me? Well, I can see why. The pressure of being Hibiki Wataru’s lapdog proved to be too much for you to handle, hm?” His eyes are just a little too bright to be sincere.

You draw your hand back, stung and struggling to keep control of your composure. “If you really think that way, then you don’t know me at all.” Your voice wavers on the last few words.

It’s that, more than anything else, which seems to bring him back to himself. “Forgive me, my dear. I…got carried away, it seems. I do hope you will still consider my offer?”

You step away cautiously, distancing yourself from him with all the tenseness of a prey animal faced by a predator.

In a few hours, you’ll be watching from inside a glass box as a boy, whom you might grow to love in time, dies. Who’s to say that the Wataru who leaves the stage is the same as the Wataru who stepped onto it? Is this the last thing you want to say to him? Is this the last memory you want him to have of you?

Fuelled by a sudden burst of courage, you turn back around and press a swift kiss to his cheek before dancing back on quick feet. Feather-light, fleeting—as ephemeral as Wataru himself. He blinks, seemingly stunned, the first burst of true emotion you’ve seen him show today.

“I’ll watch it,” you say quickly, in a rush to get your words out. “I'll watch your execution. And Wataru?” He raises a curious eyebrow; go on. “I’ll keep my eyes on you the whole time. So…don’t just roll over and show your belly to fine. Give it your all, okay?”

Then the mortification sets in and you turn on your heel, towards the studio control room, heart racing in your chest. Wataru’s laughter sounds behind you. “Don’t worry, my dear! You won’t be able to look away.”
