As it approaches its 150th anniversary in 2021, the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) is undertaking a major expansion – the Sydney Modern Project – which will transform one of Australia’s flagship art museums.

With construction underway and scheduled for completion in late 2022, the $344 million (AUD) transformation includes the development of a new standalone building designed by the Japanese Pritzker Prize-winning architects SANAA. It will be connected to the existing Gallery building via an outdoor public art garden accessible 24/7, creating a civic campus on its magnificent site overlooking Sydney Harbour. The Sydney Modern Project will also give prominence to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, as well as revitalising the Gallery’s much-loved existing building with its signature collection of Australian art.

AGNSW is located in the heart of Sydney’s eastern cultural precinct, adjacent to the Royal Botanic Garden and overlooking Sydney Harbour. It is home to an unrivalled collection of Australian art from the early 19th-century to the present. The Gallery has been at the forefront of collecting, displaying and interpreting historic and contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, and in engaging directly with artists and their communities. In addition, the Gallery holds significant collections of European and Asian art and presents major national and international exhibitions.

A leading centre for Asian art and culture, the Gallery has an outstanding collection from East Asia as well as South and Southeast Asia. The first works to enter the Gallery collection in 1879 were a large group of ceramics and bronzes that had featured at the Sydney International Exhibition that year – a gift from the Government of Japan.

From the time of its founding in 1871, the Gallery has collected and worked with the artists of its time from both Australia and abroad, a commitment that will remain central to the transformed art museum.

The new building designed by SANAA will sit in contrast to the Gallery’s 19th-century neo-classical building, with a public art garden connecting the two. Light, transparent and open to its surroundings, SANAA’s building responds to the site’s topography with a series of pavilions that cascade down towards Woolloomooloo Bay with spectacular views over Sydney Harbour. The new building will almost double AGNSW’s total exhibition space, from 9,000 to 16,000 sqm (97,000 to 172,000 sq. ft) and will feature galleries specifically designed to accommodate art of the 21st century.

The Gallery is setting a new benchmark for cultural institutions as the first public art museum in Australia to achieve the highest environmental standard for design. The Green Building Council of Australia has awarded the Sydney Modern Project a 6-star Green Star design rating. This ‘world leadership’ rating is testament to the Gallery’s commitment to sustainability and SANAA’s innovative design. Sustainability initiatives include water efficiency and rainwater harvesting, solar panels and green roofs.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art will be presented with unprecedented ambition, delivering commissions emerging from longstanding relationships with artists and communities. In the SANAA-designed building, works by Indigenous artists will be the first to be encountered by visitors as they enter, installed in a dedicated 960 sqm (10,333 sq ft gallery). Works from the Gallery’s internationally significant permanent collection will also be displayed as part of the curatorial narrative across the entire campus, celebrating Australia’s enduring cultural heritage and its myriad contemporary expressions.

The new building will incorporate a vast, dramatic, columned underground art space repurposed from a decommissioned WWII naval oil tank that will display large-scale contemporary works. The 2,200 sqm (23,700 sq. ft) gallery with 7-metre-high (23 ft) ceilings will be used for specially commissioned installations and site-specific performances, providing public access to this unique space for the first time.

Other spaces in the new building will include: • A 1,300 sqm (13,993 sq. ft) major exhibition gallery with 5.5-metre-high (18 ft) ceilings to host national and international shows • A 1,160 sqm (12,486 sq. ft) column-free contemporary gallery with 5.5-metre-high (18 ft) ceilings and a glazed facade looking out to Woolloomooloo Bay • Purpose-built learning and participation studios for younger audiences, school programmes and a variety of public programmes, including a dedicated studio for creating multimedia works • Flexible spaces to support public programmes, including performance and lectures • Smaller galleries, including a project gallery and a suite of spaces for multimedia works • Integrated indoor and outdoor spaces, including accessible landscaped rooftop art terraces and courtyards, as well as the art garden and civic plaza.

The Sydney Modern Project is the largest government and philanthropic partnership of its kind to be achieved to date in the arts in Australia. Together with the NSW Government’s $244 million (AUD) in funding, the Gallery has attracted unprecedented support, exceeding its fundraising target of $100 million (AUD) to support construction of the new building. Dr Michael Brand, director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, said, “SANAA’s sublime design allows us to bring together art, architecture and landscape in spectacular new ways to create a unique art museum experience for everyone to enjoy in our vibrant global city.”

“Sydney provides a unique perspective on the world that we are referencing for both the creation of new spaces and the revitalisation of our existing galleries. As we undertake this transformation, like many museums globally, we are working toward a more inclusive approach to engaging the public and a more global understanding of art.”

Kazuyo Sejima, co-founder of SANAA, said, “It has been wonderful and an honour to design such an important public building in Sydney with Michael Brand and his team. We hope the Sydney Modern Project will be a special place for visitors to experience the shared joy of art and ideas in this unique and beautiful setting. This is our first building in Australia, and we are delighted it is being realised.”

President of the Art Gallery of New South Wales Board of Trustees, David Gonski AC said: “The widespread support for the Gallery’s once in a generation expansion symbolises the importance of the arts to the community. We are deeply grateful to the NSW Government for funding the expansion of the state’s leading art museum and our extraordinary donors who have so generously partnered with us on our next exciting chapter.”

The NSW Government, as part of its COVID-19 response, extended construction hours for significant infrastructure projects so work could continue safely. This has helped ensure construction of the Gallery’s new standalone building remains on schedule despite the pandemic.

The Sydney Modern Project is being delivered by Infrastructure NSW on behalf of the Gallery and the NSW Government. Richard Crookes Constructions is the building contractor. The existing Gallery building remains open throughout construction.

Before that he was director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond from 2000 to 2005; A regular contributor to global conversations about the future of art museums, Michael chairs the Council of Australian Art Museum Directors (CAAMD) and serves on the International Advisory Board of the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. His professional affiliations include the Bizot Group of International Art Museum Directors and the American Association of Museum Directors. He is a past member of the Visiting Committee of the Harvard Art Museums and the Governing Board of the Courtauld Institute of Art in London.

SANAA Founded in 1995, SANAA is an architectural and design firm based in Tokyo, headed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa. SANAA’s major works include the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan; the Dior Omotesando Building in Tokyo, Japan; the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, USA; Grace Farms in Connecticut, USA; the Rolex Learning Center at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland; the Louvre-Lens in France, and Bocconi University New Urban Campus in Milan, Italy. Current projects include La Samaritaine in Paris and Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem.

Among the few countries that I have applied a tourist visa for, Australia is easily the most nerve-wracking, and at the same time the most efficient. Nerve-wracking because it takes up to 18 to 28 days for the Australian High Commission to make a decision, and costs about MYR 425 (PHP 5,362) with no guarantees of approval. Efficient because the application is 90% online, therefore there’s no need to queue up at the embassy with stacks of papers to submit. For the other 10%, I’ll share the details as we go along.

Pre-Visa Application Research

Select the purpose of your visit, and the country of your passport

I’ve selected the option Holiday for my purpose, and entered Philippines as the country of passport.

My visa option is Visitor visa (subclass 600)

Visa cost – $140 AUD (MYR 401 / PHP 5,062P)

Processing Time – 18 to 28 days

Now that I know which visa stream to apply for, time to get the real process started.

Step 1 – Create An Account via https://online.immi.gov.au

This step is pretty straight-forward. I entered all the necessary information such as:

Current location (from which country am I lodging my application from)

Legal status

Why am I at my current location and the date of my current visa (applicable for those who are applying for the visa outside of their country)

The rest are relevant information about me including information that prove my identity

My travel companion (adding my spouse makes the application stronger in my opinion)

Non-accompanying members of the family is also needed (like seriously – I’ve enumerated my immediate family in the Philippines and Malaysian in-laws for this)

Contact in Australia – This will only appear if you answer ‘Yes’ to the question: “Will the applicant visit any relatives, friends or contacts while in Australia?”

Employment Details

Funding details – I’ve broken down my funding details to include funding from my spouse, my own salary and the contribution of my Aussie contacts in terms of accommodation

Tips: * Remember your username (email) and password; *Bookmark the Immi page so you can easily login and attach important documents as needed

Step 2 – Attach As Many Supporting Documents As You Can

In this section you can attach up to 60 documents to support your visa application. I’ve attached around 29 documents before I clicked on ‘Submit Application’. The good thing is, the applicant is not bound to complete the application from the time the Immi account was created. It took me a few days to attach all the necessary documents before submitting.

Some of the documents I’ve attached are the following:

Travel Document – Scanned copy of passport

Passport-size photo

Invitation from family / friends – signed invitation letter

Evidence of the financial status and funding for visit – Employment letter, 3-month payslip, personal bank statements, 2018 income tax return, spouse’s 3-month payslip

Evidence of planned tourism activities in Australia – 2-week itinerary

Evidence of previous travel – Photos of entry/exit stamped pages of the current passport and travel visas

Other documents – Scanned copies of Marriage certificate and Spouse Visa

Step 3 – Submit Application And Pay Visa Processing Fee

As the visa application is done online, so is the payment. While credit card is the most convenient way, you may also pay through bank transfer or other methods. Once I made the payment, I received an instant notification + invoice in my registered email address.

Step 4 – Set Up Appointment For Biometrics

*Takes about 5 minutes online

Biometrics is only required if an applicant applies:

for a visa that is part of the biometrics program

from a country that is part of our biometrics program

In this case, Malaysia is part of the biometrics program. You can find the list of countries that are part of the biometrics program by visiting: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help-support/meeting-our-requirements/biometrics

The document below is the biometrics letter from the embassy which instructed me to visit an Australian Visa Application Center (not an embassy but an agency that partners with the Australian High Commission)

Once I’ve completed appointment setting, I received a confirmation email with an attached appointment letter.

I’ve completed the appointment process right after I’ve submitted my application. Steps 3 and 4 can be done in 1 go.

Step 5 – Provide Biometrics At An Australian Visa Application Center (AVAC)

*takes about an hour including the queue/wait

This is 10% of the process which is done in person. On the day of my appointment I visited the AVAC in Kuala Lumpur. Address: Suite 19.06, 19th Floor Wisma MCA 163 Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

I have the following documents handy:

Passport

Letter for Biometric From Embassy

Appointment Letter (from AVAC)

Application Fee: MYR 117 payable by cash only

Step 6 – Wait for 18 to 28 Days

This part was the most nerve-wracking for me. I kept on checking my Immi account daily, just in case additional documents were required then I can act on it straight away.

Tip: Just chill and stop checking your Immi account. :))

On the 21st day I received an email from the Australian High Commission asking for additional information. (This was a bit heartbreaking I must admit.)

Copy of Marriage Certificate

Evidence of spouse’s current occupation

Evidence of adequate funds or access to adequate funds (spouse + contacts in AU)

This is quite odd considering that I have attached these documents when I first submitted my application.

Nonetheless, as soon as I received this email my husband immediately sent me his latest payslips + bank statements and most importantly, his AU visa approval (which is super easy and cheap for Malaysians btw). I logged in to my Immi account and attached these documents straight away. A few minutes after I’ve sent the documents, I got another email and this time, the email mended my broken heart.

I got an approval in 3 weeks which in the case of my passport, is not bad at all. 🙂

Moral of the story: It is always better to over-attach supporting documents specially the financial ones.

Bitcoin Cash [BCH] skyrockets and breaks the $1500 limit

Bitcoin Cash broke the $1500 today and continues to climb. This latest marker is indicative of BCH’s skyrocketing growth over the last week, with 98.58% growth from 17th April to 23rd April. It broke the $1000 limit on 21st April, and analysts are predicting a higher growth.

With the upcoming fork on 15th May, the value of the coin has continued its bullish run. The fork is set to increase the block size from 8MB to 32MB, which is the highest block size possible without changing peer-to-peer protocols.

Bitcoin Cash is making a more fully featured blockchain, with technologies such as Memo, Cointext, and Handcash coming to the forefront. Memo is described as being ‘a new on-chain social network launched for Bitcoin Cash blockchain’.

The press release on the official website states:

“The platform allows users to create a profile which is tied to a specific BCH address and a public/private key pair. Users can then tether certain data using the program such as a website URL, a quote, or a certain date which is hashed into the BCH chain using an OP_RETURN transaction. “

Cointext is an emerging technology on the Bitcoin Cash blockchain which allows users to transact Bitcoin Cash with any type of mobile phone using simple text commands without the use of Internet, apps, accounts or passwords.

Handcash is a technology on the same blockchain which allows users to conduct BCH transactions using NFC. Other services such as Twitter’s @tipprbot functions on the same blockchain enables users to tip each other using BCH.

BCH has also seen widespread adoption in the 9 months since its inception. Wallet providers such as Edge, Broad, Jaxx, Copay, Exodus, Ledger and many more have added support for BCH. BCH’s adoption by BitPay has increased the transactions conducted using BCH.

Exchange services have also jumped on the BCH train, with top providers such as Bitstamp, Coinbase, Kraken, Bithumb, GPAX, Binance and others adopting for exchange. Prominent Indian exchange platform Zebpay has also begun exchanging BCH.

BCH has also seen adoption by mainstream service providers. VPN service provider Mullvad started accepting payments via BCH since February of this year, and Digital Artists online switched from accepting BTC as payment to BCH, quoting low transaction fees.

One of BCH’s advantage over Bitcoin is that it has lower transaction fees compared to Bitcoin’s. In December last year, transaction fees for Bitcoin went up to $28 per transaction, making it difficult to use for microtransactions. BCH transaction fees have stayed below $1.

Bitcoin Cash is also making progress on the security front. SBI BITS and Nchain’s patented technology known as distributed threshold blinded key system protects against hacking incidents similar to Mt. Gox and Tokyo’s Coincheck.

One of the largest mining operations in the world, Antpool, began burning 12% of all mined BCH earlier this week. They believe that this will induce significant growth in the on-chain transaction value.

The Twittersphere is showing signs of excitement over the fork and BCH’s new features.

Epic is waiting on “player information” to pay out missing Fortnite tournament prizes

May 4, 2019 Epic says it is waiting on bank details from tournament winners and will pay out prizes when that paperwork is completed correctly.

Back in January, the Australian Open professional tennis tournament played host to a Fortnite Summer Smash event, which boasted a prize purse of $400,000. Several winning participants in the event, which was dubbed “the largest competitive gaming event in Australian history,” are now saying they have never been paid their winnings.

A player who goes by ttvLeftRightGN posted their version of events on the Fortnite subreddit this weekend. The top 100 qualifying players in the tournament were all to receive a prize payout from Epic Games, with 21st through 100th place earning $1,000 AUD a piece. ttvLeftRightGN says they were among this group, but that the prize has never been paid.

Other players have complained about missing prizes as well, including a few who placed highly enough to win larger prizes. One player who goes by Devour placed eighth, which should have earned her $5,000, but she says she hasn’t been paid (Devour has organised a list of players waiting on prizes). Trident.Keith and Theschnake placed in the $25,000 bracket, and both are still waiting on payment.

I was driving on the M4.. I had 2 cars in front of me .. I was in the last car in the row ( third car ) .. the car in the front ( First car ) has braked suddenly .. The car in the middle ( second car ) hit it causing it much damage .. I could not stop at the right time and i hit the middle car afterwards .. Now .. Now the air bag deployed in my truck, and all of the air bags deployed in her car. My Truck looks like it will probably be totaled the bumper is ruined, the hood is ruined, the headlight is broken, The door I had to practically pry open because it was stuck, Smoke started coming out of the truck headlight broken Paint, I think the radiator broke, etc.... etc... Both Vehicles had to be towed away. Help us Stop the Corporate Bullies

We are appealing for support from the community, to help us bring our case to trial. In April this year we sort to have an ongoing dispute with Mr Beams USA heard before The Federal Court of Australia. Shortly after filing evidence, Mr Beams USA’s legal team made an application for security for costs. Now, this means that we may be required to pay a $30,000 security deposit and engage a legal practitioner before the matter can be heard in coming months.

To anyone who decides to get behind us and push this to trial, we will donate all money raised by Funded Justice and awarded by the Federal Court of Australia to Motor Neurone Disease Australia (MND) (Excludes court costs, legal fees, tax, government charges, commission and credit card processing charges payable to Funded Justice, PayPal fees and other statutory costs).

Below is a short summary of the events leading up to our decision to have the matter heard before The Federal Court of Australia.

On the 31st of March 2011 our company, Home Lighting Solutions P/L, registered the Australian business trading name, MRBEAMS.COM.AU. If you follow the link below you will find the first registration date for MRBEAMS.COM.AU.

Home Lighting Solutions P/L was the first company to register and commence trading under the name MRBEAMS.COM.AU (No similar trading names or trademarks were registered or in use in Australia at that time).

In July 2013 our website, www.mrbeams.com.au was severely compromised by international hackers and it wasn’t until around two weeks later, after spending thousands in web development costs, that we were able to get our online business up and running again.

Several weeks later, between the 21st of October and the 8th of November 2013, Mr Beams USA contacted us on a number of occasions (via email) and expressed an interest to purchase our business in Australia, including our website www.mrbeams.com.au and Australian customer list. We declined the meagre offers (<$1,000 AUD) put forward by Mr Beams USA at that time, because by that stage it had costs us tens of thousands of dollars to build our online business in Australia (websites and online marketing were very expensive several years ago).

Mr Beams USA then engaged law firms in the US and Australia and began sending letters of demand requesting that we immediately hand over our business in Australia, including our website www.mrbeams.com.au and customer list. In late 2013 and early 2014 Mr Beams USA’s legal representatives threatened to sue us in the Federal Court if we did not immediately comply with all of their demands.

Not content with our ongoing refusal to comply with their demands, Mr Beams USA then decided to take control of our intellectual property unlawfully. In January 2014, without prior warning, Mr Beams USA colluded with an American based web development company (Webedge Design LLC), obtained unauthorised access to our website and replaced all content with a landing page directing all online traffic to their website hosted in the US instead (www.mrbeams.com). Screen shots of the landing page created by Mr Beams USA in 2014 were immediately sent to our domain registrar, Melbourne IT and the website was shut down to mitigate any further unauthorised use. Mr Beams USA’s actions were later reported to the Australian Cybercrime Reporting Network (ACORN) and a report subsequently filed with the CIU branch of Victorian Police (The profile picture of this campaigne is also the screenshot).

In 2015 Mr Beams USA registered the Australian trademark, “Mr. Beams” in the LED lighting category.

In 2016 we made an application to trademark our trading name, “MRBEAMS.COM.AU” in the Antique/Second Hand Furniture category. Our application was later opposed by Mr Beams USA’s legal representatives.

Left with no option but to protect our business and intellectual property from the clutches of Mr Beams USA, in April this year we sort to have the matter heard before the Federal Court of Australia.

Please help us raise enough money and get this to trial, and in return we will help MND continue their great work in Australia. (To ensure complete transparency, all financials will be prapared and published by an independant chartered accounting firm).

The British Pound could be still overvalued against a wider basket of currencies, leaving the Bank of England in a difficult position between rising inflation, the wider possibility of a combination of capital outflows, a reduction in cross border transactions and capital inflows, on which the UK relies on, to finance its current account deficit and private investments. The BoE could leave the Sterling to do its course as shock absorber, although depreciation in the Pound shows an already marked capital outflows from British assets, the question for the BoE comes when the Sterling will adjust, in the currency market, to a much weaker exchange rate. That could become a reason to attract investments and facilitate exports, however the already rising inflation and PPI data would reasonably require the BoE to raise interest rates in the Sterling Money Market, putting therefore a tightening on liquidity and financial condition in a set of circumstances, when the UK economy would be receiving much less support in terms of foreign capital, those financial conditions and set of circumstances would certainly put the BoE in a very difficult position.

The depreciation in the Pound Sterling, in a certain sense, would make the King going naked and it would be indeed very difficult that the Emperor's new clothes will be made of the finest silk and drapery from the Indie, because countries like India have well waited till 1947 to become independent nation and the UK strategy to make an 1860 restyling in the 21st century is clearly an out of date pretence.

Therefore many economist have often argued that the U.S. are able to run a very large Trade Deficit, at around $ 600 Billion U.S. dollar in 2016, because more than 60% of world currencies reserves are held in U.S. Dollar.

Financial market reform, initiated well before, also could be implemented in future as regulators and the largest and systemically important financial institution have been evaluating how to replace Libor Benchmark in the near future, with a different Financial Benchmark that could ensure Financial institution would be less likely to rig the Interbank-Offered-Rate.

Setting aside the complexity of Financial Industry regulation, from the economy standpoint the UK is a country that relies largely on foreign investments as many parts of the British Industry have been taken over by foreign buyers, the housing market constantly requires foreign investment inflows to buy into British real estates, indeed very much of UK economy revenues are made by foreign firms located in the UK, from the fashion industry, luxury goods, car industry, that relies also on car manufacturer Financial branches to provided finance for UK consumers to buy cars, to pretty much every bits of the British economy revenues are made by European firms that invest,bringing their expertise and know-how to create jobs in the UK, as well as Asian investors U.S. firms and many more foreign buyers and investors that can invest and operate with their businesses in the UK, meaning that the Pound Sterling strength, in the currency market, is largely based on capital inflows, therefore once these set of circumstances would be put in jeopardy at least on European trading, a part of these funding and capital inflows could be definitely be invested and deployed differently, many would argue that the U.S. would gain from the financial standpoint as the most likely place to accommodate financial institutions, but also the Euro-Area and the EU would see more investments, also in the financial industry, to be deployed in the Euro-Area taking into account the ECB as hub for liquidity,

nonetheless the trend is material as the Euro-Area Net Investment Flow in December improved to

€ 121.9 Billion Euro.

The UK economic position and the strength of the Pound derives much from financial inflows and outflows and the services industry, therefore the British exit would also give the opportunity to foreign investors to chose whether to allocate their resources in highly expensive UK economy, while it could happen, as already mentioned, that non-UK companies will chose to relocate in the Euro-Area or the U.S. to gain continuous access to a much wider markets rather than the narrow UK domestic market.

Going forward the BoE will have to be very careful in assessing the possibility of Capital shortfall in the UK financial markets, whether would become a liquidity issues with UK Corporate Bonds, one example is the Co-Operative Bank put on sale that in is economic distress with CCC Bond Rate, meaning that for UK corporation would become more than an issue to gain finance in the wider financial markets, unless paying upfront a higher premium, that would increase the leverage at which UK companies and SMEs will be financially exposed.

That means the BoE hasn't really got much firepower to buy the Pound in terms of foreign exchange reserve, mean while Gold has been recalled in Europe and bought by Switzerland, China and India to rebuff potential stock market shocks.

Although the UK economy has been resilient and moving forward with pace, the currency needs to stay lower and it will depreciate more, when financial inflows will shrink, but mostly because the UK would enter into FTA with countries that will require more purchasing power for their currencies to buy British goods.

With incoming weaker data from the UK economy GBP\USD exchange rate could be slowly traded back toward to GBP\USD 1.20 with the -3,3%, technical trading data : RSI(14) 46.42 Neutral,

Stochastic(9,6) 49.05 Neutral, Moving Averages 21-55-100-200 days are Sell signal.

GBP\USD month log chart provides the prospective of only 12% depreciation for the Pound to recall the March 1985 data with a GBP\USD 1.08 close. The BoE will have to take into account a different set of circumstances, meaning that the UK will not have free access to the wider EU market, while FTA with other nations will require the Pound Sterling and the exchange rate to stay lower, considering also that Financial inflows will definitively diminish. In the long term the relevance of the Pound Sterling in Financial markets could be questioned.
