I’ve recently reread The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (spoilers ahead) and it’s brought back some thoughts I had the first time I read it about who Katniss is related to.

I know most of the fan theories lean towards Maude Ivory as Katniss’s ancestor (even the director of TBOSAS film supports this theory), but for me narratively and thematically Lucy Gray being Katniss’s direct ancestor holds more weight.

It fits perfectly with Snow’s “It's the things we love most, that destroy us” line; that a direct descendant of Lucy Gray, Snow’s first and only love, ends up being his downfall, the thing that destroys him, the hunger games, and the capitol’s rule. There’s much more of a narrative punch if its Lucy Gray’s granddaughter doing this as opposed to Lucy Gray’s first cousin twice removed (if Katniss is Maude Ivory’s granddaughter).

Also, I think thematically it works very well too. In TBOSAS there’s a Control vs. Chaos theme which extends to Capitol vs. District and even to Jabberjay vs. Mockingjay. Snow embodies the capitol and control, and initially Lucy Gray represents the districts and chaos being controlled, much like the Jabberjays. But through her time in the games, and how things end up with Snow, Lucy Gray changes, she evolves into something that is uncontrollable, representing chaos like the Mockingjay.

Further to this, Mockingjays were an accident, uncontrolled chaos, that the capitol assumed (in its arrogance) would die off. But the opposite happened, the birds thrived and became a new species, that was completely unmanageable. In a similar manner, once Lucy Gray has left Snow, effectively braking his (and the capitol's) control over her, he lashes out shooting at her, trying to destroy her, and assumes that she will die either from her injuries or just from being stuck in the wilds alone. I think narratively it would be perfect if, like the Mockingjays, Lucy Gray survived and thrived, going on to find a man she loved and having a family.

Lucy Gray thematically representing the Mockingjays leads perfectly into the OG trilogy too. With Katniss’s father carrying on that chaos/uncontrolled element through his hunting and songs, and in turn passing that onto Katniss who, figuratively and literally, becomes the Mockingjay for the rebellion.

I really don’t see this narrative and thematic element carrying nearly the same weight within the story if Maude Ivory is Katniss’s direct ancestor.

Anyway, these are just some of my thoughts and musings. I'm really looking forward to the movie, going by the trailers they’re stuck really close to the book. And I know Sejanus’s story line is going to break my heart 😭

thinking abt my idea that plutarch made the qq arena so environmental-kill based in order to keep most of the victors from having to kill each other. the arena did it for them.

it also has the added benefit of teaching the survivors how pods work, for warfare in the capitol.

Things has been good between them, yes he has his episodes and they only are getting stronger out of it. Something was also different, since they actually did finally got married for real this time. Who would've thought that she would actually get married and yet here she is. She loves him and she didn't wanted to imagine life without him in it. Her mom comes to visit from time to time to see how everything was going. Today was different, she hadn't been feeling well for a few days or maybe even weeks. And she didn't even know what was going on to begin with, yet she kept on going to the woods to hunt even when she wasn't feeling 100%. When then she finally figured out what was wrong since her mom had been visiting and just left to go back to 13. As Katniss was in utterly shock and she was about to freak out. No, no this can't be happening. Yes they talked about having kids and he finally managed to convince her and yet she didn't expected to end up pregnant this fast.

Katniss went for a walk to just let this all sink in and not sure how to tell Peeta, she was not going to be a good mom. Or at least she was thinking she wasn't going to be a good one. Once she was back home and closed the door behind her she took a deep breath. Still having a panic attack, walking to the kitchen where she saw Peeta was. "Peeta..." Katniss mumbled as she just had to tell him. "I-I know why I haven't been feeling well for the past weeks." Taking a deep breath again. "I'm pregnant... we're going to be parents." There she said it and she didn't know how he would reply to it.

Right after she told him, she felt like she had to run to the bathroom as she turned around and ran out of the kitchen and threw up in the toilet. Yes, this all definitely made sense the constant throwing up, especially during the mornings. She then sat down on the floor by the toilet as she sighed. Was this going to be like this for nine months? If that was the case it was going to be a long pregnancy. She was still freaking out, this can't be happening. Slowly getting up and then she was sliding down the front door as she pulled up her legs. "I can't do this, I am not going to be a good mom. I know we talked about this and I agreed. I just didn't expected it to happen so quick. You, I am absolutely sure you are going to be an amazing father. Me? a good parent? Don't think so."

I absolutely think it’s significant that the reaping day is on Independence Day, and was done so on purpose by the Capitol as yet another slap-in-your-face to the districts.

As for the reaping being rigged, I’ve always held the headcanon that both the 74th and 75th Games were rigged. Like Katniss says, the odds are very specifically not in Prim’s favour for being reaped at age 12 with only 1 slip in the bowl. That being said, I have absolutely no doubt that Snow not only knew that Prim was the daughter of Mr Everdeen (someone well known for flaunting the rules), but that he also was responsible for the mine explosion that killed both Mr Everdeen and Mr Hawthorne. The reason for Prim being reaped instead of Katniss is because Prim was 12 at the time and very unlikely to make it out of the bloodbath.

Snow absolutely did not count on Katniss volunteering for her though 😏

I also believe that the reaping for the 75th Games was rigged to ensure that Peeta was in the arena, but this time it was Haymitch and Effie who did the rigging 😉. They knew it would be the only way to ensure that Katniss would cooperate with the others who were in on the rebellion.

"I didn't steal it, I just found it !" The words were blurted out before she could even register what the real question was, or who had spoken up to her. The only signal her brain sent to her body was that SOMEONE had walked up to her, which was enough to initiate a series of unconscious responses, starting with a sudden tension stiffening the muscles of her shoulders, followed by a rapid vocal answer. Startled, her hand had slipped, causing the blade she was using to pick under her nail to dig into the flesh of her thumb. "Shit." It was a mere cut, nothing to be anxious about, really. These past few years, she had gone through way, way WORSE. In fact, that one small incident annoyed her more than it actually hurt ; an insignificant pain compared to the hole that kept digging deep inside of her since Peeta had disappeared. Since he had been taken away from her so easily. She could've, no, should've done something about it. In fact, she could be acting right now, instead of sitting alone on the floor of a supply warehouse of District 13. But the wounds inflicted on her body from the last Games were healing way too slow for her taste. She'd rather put the fault of her self-isolation on her physical health than the bundle of emotions turning and turning within her head. There seemed to be no way out to the constant anger and sorrow which yet begged to be exorcised. The issue was, there was no one she could talk to, no one she trusted anymore.

Eyes squinting slightly, her head leaned back against the wall behind her. As much as she would've loved to avoid it, Katniss let her gaze cross his. The eyecontact didn't last long, however. Soon, she was looking away in what could be identified as shame as well as some sort of disgust. Not of his person, but of what he had DONE. "Oh. It's you." The tone of her voice was flat, devoid of enthusiasm nor hatred. It was simply ... empty. Ironic, wasn't it ? To sound so emotionless when her head was constantly buzzing with strong, sometimes contradictory feelings. Having acknowledged him, her focus went back on the hunting knife she had "found", resuming the aimless picking, though this time at the cuticle of her already damaged finger. "You can try to take it away, I don't care. Like I said, I didn't steal it, I just found it." Perhaps her voice had begun to betray a tad of frustration from his question. And she didn't feel sorry for feeling this way, just like he probably wouldn't sorry for resenting her after the way she had attacked him at the hospital. At least they were more or less even.

"Look, if you're worried about me carrying this around, I promise I won't come at you again. Also, if you want me to be the Mockingjay, you're gonna have to hand me weapons again. I just ... " A sigh escaped her lips, an exasperated one. Did she really have to explain herself to Haymitch ? "I just don't feel safe here. Or anywhere else."

( peeta was home now. he was safe. he wouldn’t have to leave again for a long time. heart couldn’t take it even if she’s still getting used to not safeguarding her feelings. )

ok my biggest complaint abt the mockingjay movies as a whole but pt 2 especially is how little they capture katniss'...mental devastation? and tbh physical? she is running on fumes all throughout mockingjay. she is barely functioning, to the point where she doesn't have a schedule in 13 because her mental state is so ruined. she oscillates between disassociating and being actively a danger to herself. and after prim dies? she's gone. she's still recovering from severe enough burns that she has skin grafts all over her body when she kills coin, to the point where she calls herself a fire mutt multiple times in her narration. and in the movies she's just kind of like ._. because the pacing of mockingjay pt 2 is wild
