BACKGROUND INFO:

alright. so.

isaac's backstory is neither tragic nor easy. his father was an immigrant who married his mother solely to get a green card (y’all, to be fair... the citizenship tests are whack). there wasn’t any real romance between the two, but the drop-ins always said otherwise. no, outside of putting on a show for government officials, isaac’s father and mother were friends at the best of times.

the best of times culminated in a son who grew up in an interesting dynamic. his father and mother never even attempted to be anything more than friends (with, as you can see, the occasional benefits). after the check-ins finally stopped, his father and mother even began sleeping in different rooms. his mother would trade in her queen for a double and replace the space his father used to take up with his cradle.

it was nothing like the ‘unhappy marriage’ trope, though... again, because they barely ever pretended to be married. they would take their wedding rings off when they went out with friends. sometimes they would even take off their rings around each other and talk the other up to someone attractive.

so it was unorthodox, but it was much better than his parents pretending to be in love in that way and giving him a skewed version of what romance should look like.

one down-side to it, though, was that isaac never knew who he was supposed to go to for what. usually it’s just a given that “if you need/want x, go to the matriarch, if you need/want y, go to the patriarch” but... what happens... when your parents are basically just your friends?

so thank god for growing up in the age of technology. like,, ya,, a literal baby can’t google things like “how to say ‘mom’” but a 15y/o can google “how to shave”

so... ya... his parents were his friends, the internet was his parent(s?).

one thing the internet couldn’t do? give him drums. it could introduce him to the likes of ringo starr, john bonham, keith moon, and ginger baker, but it couldn’t give him drums... not when he was only, like... 10, at least.

so he put a set on his christmas wishlist and figured they would divide amongst themselves.

so ya, his 10th christmas, he got a shitty little rockwood hohner kit that he would use for the next nine years.

he never received any professional training. again, he didn’t know who to ask and... youtube wouldn’t exist for another three years. he tried to teach himself using a few books and, if nothing else, figured out a few simple beats and how to gain independence.

after learning those simple little beats and not knowing if he wanted to buy the next book, he decided to take a break and, instead of going back to professional books, he’d just listen to some of his favorite tracks... most of which were ginger baker... which made things kind of hard when he only had one bass drum, two tom-toms, and one floor tom. those, plus the really low quality pearl cymbals. still, he did his best to make it work.

just a side-note that, because of videos of ginger, isaac used (and still uses, out of habit) a mix of traditional and matched grip.

he went back and forth between the books and mimicking the patterns of other drummers (mostly ginger) up until he was around 16 and his friend, ribs (y’all), decided to teach him a few more technical skills. what you want to learn for this song are polyrhythms, but those are hard and no, ginger isn’t using a crash there, he’s using a splash and do you want a discount on some better cymbals and drumheads from my parents’s music shop because this is a very functional kit but it kind of sounds whack

he continued using the same whack kit, but replaced the heads with aquarians, as per ribs’s recommendation (but evans and remo are also good) and, after literally examining baker’s kit, replaced the cymbals with various zildjian collections

even though we stan istanbul agop in this house.

he also started listening to more drummers than... pretty much just baker with a hint of john bonham, keith moon, and ringo starr. as his friend suggested, he tried out drummers like buddy rich, art blakey, travis barker, dave grohl, karen carpenter, neil peart, nick mason, simon phillips –– even was told to listen to ac/dc songs just to see how a successful band could be made using essentially the same beat over and over and over.

so now he had some split time. school. work. practice. figure out who the hell was making dinner that night/if there was someone making dinner last night because they might both be talking each other up.

although he applied to various colleges, and although some of these colleges actually accepted him, he ultimately decided not to go. instead, he moved from san jose to los angeles in the hopes that he’d find something bigger than himself... and a new drum set...

he found the latter in a ludwig kit with two bass drums, two tom-toms, and two floor toms. then he just added a bunch of stuff and tried to make it like ginger baker’s. pretty much spent all of his money on it and then some.

when his friends formed a band and found success, he was very very happy for them... but... he found himself stuck... driving ubers.

and lyfts!

he’d seen the twilight zone before. he loved that show. he’d seen the episode ‘the hitch-hiker,’ so he was really driving for the companies against his better judgment.

his worst uber story? the time a guy got into the car, had pinged a location that was still marked as a store on the uber gps but had recently been torn down, and tried to attack him when they got there :\ he 110% fought back, though. was fired because the other guy was the one who made it out injured.

only drove for lyft after that :\

he did take on a few projects, but he... proved to be too much of a roger waters for people who just wanted to chill and have fun. there would be adverts for people who wanted to form a band and he’d be like “hell yeah! finally! a band!” then he’d get pissed that they advertised it so seriously but really... just wanted to jam. did not have any plans to try to do anything with it.

the few projects he did join that involved people who wanted to actually achieve success... if they were slacking, you best bet his inner roger waters came out! which is why he never stuck around in any projects for too long!

but ‘projects’ and ‘jam sessions’ were totally different. you want to do ‘wipeout’ in a project? he’s gonna take that intro that literally everyone on the planet knows SERIOUSLY. you want to do ‘wipeout’ in a jam session? LET’S HAVE SOME FUN WITH IT.

he does some session/studio drumming for other artists to make some extra money while doing something he genuinely enjoys... but... still... it is no project™

in between things right now, he got a call from joakim that, while muffled and staticky, sounded like it said ‘get here, please’ and clearly stated where he was.

of course, voicemail lines were crossed and many many many essential words were left out – words that were basically saying the exact opposite ahfsdkjl. the shadow’s really playin them :\

TL;DR:

i was gonna kms if i didn’t play another drummer, so this is my ginger baker fanboy whose parents were literally just best friends and, as a result, were also both his friend. the internet raised him. started playing drums when he was 10 on a low qual kit with low qual cymbals that his parents got him for christmas, but literally why would you get a beginning a good set? continued playing. eventually moved to los angeles and tried to form many successful projects, but was too much of a roger waters. was summoned up here by the shadow man fucking around joakim. his greatest shame is how many ubers he has driven.

What is your favorite thing to do on your phone? Tweeting, looking at my photos, or more recently, playing Mario Kart Tour hehe. Do you know what you are going to be for Halloween this year? Boring as fuck, but that’s because I’m a nonbeliever and am only forced to go because my mom is a crazily devout Catholic who makes sure her whole family catches church every Sunday. I never learned :( A couple of years ago my dad tried to teach me and I was able to retain my balance for like three seconds, but I was never able to repeat it. the year ahead

I really liked @joyfulrachel‘s goals for the next ten years, so I’m going to do something similar to that, because maybe if I put these notions somewhere other than my own head, I’ll actually stick to them. (Probably not, but let’s humor ourselves).

take better care of myself

this is multifold I think. I’ve recently gone off birth control, which I’ve been on for the last 6 years (!?), and it has made some unwanted changes appear in my life. Namely acne and hormones. So that said, I want to be much more intentional about what I eat and how I take care of my skin and body because I’ve never really been good at that. 2017 I made the effort to have a face routine and I stuck to that fairly solidly for the year and only when I was traveling did I neglect it (I know that’s when my skin needed it the most but I’m still learning how to travel best for myself so maybe that’ll be a goal in the future idk). I also have started eating healthier since moving to France (because I have no friends and no one to go out to eat with lol) and I really like that I’ve done that! That’s something I want to continue doing in 2018 and hopefully it’ll cement itself into my life forever.

I also want to exercise more. I’m not very good at it, but I want to improve it in a way that is good for me. I really enjoy walking, and I walk nearly everywhere I go, so I want to do that more often. Also yoga or some simple exercises I can do in my apartment that are relatively low impact and don’t leave me completely gasping for air. This goes with the whole intentionality goal that I have for 2018, but I want to be better about my overall health and well being and unfortunately exercise is part of that too.

this is a huge goal for 2018. College kind of killed my love of reading because I was doing it so much, and now that I’m in France I can only find French books (still good, but I’m not quite good enough to read full novels in French yet). But in Dublin this past week I got two new books: Sive by John B. Keane, which is actually a play that I saw at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin four years ago that irrevocably changed me, and I’ve been searching for ever since. The other is How Much the Heart Can Hold: Seven Stories on Love, and I’m v excited to read it because it deals with different types of love, not just romantic. The cover art is beautiful too and I might steal Rachel’s idea (again) and post some thoughts about the books I read this year. To both hold myself accountable and give more of my thoughts to people who haven’t asked for them.

I’m being published at the end of the month (!!) and I’ve been writing a lot more creatively (it’s all fan fiction tbh but there’s value in it so don’t @ me), and I’ve been talking a lot with @stardustheartbeats about creative writing and prose and basically everything writing related, and it’s reminded me how much I really do love it. I don’t necessarily have aims to write a novel or essays or even really publish anything, but I do miss fiction writing and the joy it brings me. So this year I want to be more intentional about writing and revising--especially revising because I’m terrible at it--so I want to look at old things I’ve written and see if I can breathe new life into them. Or write some new things. Or at the very least, journal with intention, not just when things are falling apart. So yeah, writing more is a big goal of mine just for life in general.

apply to grad school

I’ve been thinking lately and this just feels like the right step. There are several programs I’ve been looking at, currently all in Europe, but I need to do more research on US based ones too so my mom doesn’t think I’m abandoning her. There are a few in Ireland that would be fantastic, and a few in Oslo that sound incredibly cool. I really need to sit down, weigh out the pros and cons of each, decide which ones I actually want to apply for, and then actually do it. This is actually my main goal for January, because this needs to be done soon. I might scream into this void to do that, so if anyone wants to chat about my future and help me figure out what I’m supposed to do, hmu. I like talking about myself and my passions, but I’m bad at being objective about my own life.

apply for jobs

In case grad school doesn’t work out! I’ll also need a job when I return to America, so I’m going to need to do this anyway. I’ve always been bad at this, because my college gave me so many connections, that networking and getting jobs via that was so easy. So I need to polish up my resume and send it out to people and hopefully nonprofits will hire me so that I can make a difference in the world and not have to go back to the donut shop I was at.

improve my languages (and potentially learn a new one?)

I really need to buckle down and work on my French. My goal by the time I leave at the end of April is to be mostly fluent. I know that’s not going to be easy, but that means I need to leave my house more, listen to more French podcasts, and talk to people in French instead of relying so heavily on English as I do. I also really want to improve my Norwegian. I started learning it around this time last year because of Skam and I ended up really falling in love with it. When I was in Oslo for Christmas, I felt like I could grasp Norwegian about as well as I understood French when I first got to France, which is saying something for having only learned it for a year. It’s also just a really cool language and I like finding the nuances and connections between it and the other languages I know. So I’m probably going to do the same thing I am with French and search out more media in Norwegian (podcasts, movies, music, etc).

That said, I think it would be really cool to learn another language this year. Probably, if I do, it’ll be something either Romantic or Germanic based (I’m not quite ready to tackle languages with completely different structures, but maybe one day!). So if anyone has language suggestions or wants to talk to me in another language, feel free! I want to practice more, and it’s nice to do it with someone else, rather than just myself.

use this blog more intentionally

I’m still not entirely sure what I mean by this, but I’ll probably use this more to keep myself accountable of everything I just listed above. I tend to not put a lot of effort into anything I do. Call it laziness, call it a short attention span, call it me being a true Taurus and just preferring to stay in bed all the time. Whatever it may be, I’m going to try to be more intentional about what I do all the time. I’m going to curate my life to what I want it to be, and that might seem silly or superficial to do it with aesthetics and stuff, but knowing me as a person, that’s a good way to ease into caring about everything on a larger scale. So starting small and making a point of doing things, rather than just doing them willy nilly, I think will somehow work it’s way into my life. Hopefully. We’ll see.

manage my time better

I’m horrible with my time!! I spend too much time watching netflix and not enough time doing other productive things! I need to force myself to be better about that, starting small with making myself write for a bit every day and focusing on my lesson plans. Then maybe making it bigger with other things like the first goal on this list.

Anyway, that’s enough rambling from me! It’s not ten, but this is all I can think of. These are things that I’ve been thinking about a lot. So, like I said, hopefully me writing them down will hold my accountable for my actions. I really have made strides in the last three months, being on my own and doing things for me, just because they feel good (read: doing the dishes every night, making my bed nearly every day, and actually cooking myself real meals). Here’s to 2018 and the growth it will inevitably bring. Hopefully it’s good.

Hobbies:

1. I really enjoy writing and drawing in my bullet journal, I make a spread every week and I even made an account for it with my friend Dom (@bujobaddies)

I play some instruments (Violin, Viola, Piano mainly) and I’m also in my school’s orchestra, I learned Viola unintentionally actually because my teacher was holding auditions again even for returning students to place them in certain positions and since we didn’t have a large viola section, he allowed anyone willing to learn viola to play it in the orchestra without auditioning. Too scared to audition with my violin, I picked up the Viola instead.

Personal Stuff:

1. I’m gay, and honestly I’m still not used to being able to say it, much less type it and seeing it for myself. For such a long time I denied this part of myself to have light shed upon it because I was ashamed of it because of what my parents told me about homosexuality. But eventually I came to disregard the homophobic things they’ve said and slowly I’ve started to embrace it! Even though accepting my sexuality was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, it was no doubt one of the best things, and I’m elated that I lack the fear to share this part of my self with you :).

2. I really, and I mean REALLY want to get into college. Like I’m not exactly the brightest student (in a history test I turned in my test and I was wondering why I had turned it in so early and I was MAD confident but then I realized there was a back page that I completely forgot to do and yeah I got docked 30% for that) but I’m trying my best! My top three schools as of now are University of Washington (it’s my dream school, so not exactly a target), University of Oregon, and then San Diego State University (although my Mom is against me going to this one).

3. Speaking of college, my dream job is to become a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP for short, aka Speech Therapist)! I really love sign language (I’ll be taking 3 years of it by this June, as of now 2 years) and to be quite honest It’s just a fascinating language to me! I also like social sciences in general, like psychology and sociology (though I’ve yet to take the latter!) but I’m really wishing on a star to get into one of those 3 schools with this major!

4. I’ll be an incoming senior this fall, and honestly I’m rather scared. All my friends have their SAT scores and GPA thingies all set and I’m still here trying to take the test. But nonetheless I’m really hoping that I can pull through and not only succeed my senior year, but HAVE FUN TOO! And also, congrats to all you folks in the class of 2018! We done good :)

5. To be quite honest, Gender isn’t really something I care much for (in context to myself, of course). Like if I woke up and biologically became a girl I’d be like “oh ok sure”. Joey and I have actually talked about this, and I forgot what she said in particular (srry bb) but I remember saying that I would want the name Rose, pronounced Rose or Rose-ee (no particularly deep reason, literally it’s because that’s the stage name of one of my favorite Kpop performers).

Fun Facts:

1. I hate room temperature water, I’m sorry but it’s just nasty

2. The reason why the blog is called risingemini and not ascendantaurus is because my dad gave me my wrong birth time when I started this blog, and gave me the hour AFTER I was born:D. By the time I got the correct time I thought it was too late, and that Joey and I would stick with risingemini

3. My taste of music is rather disappointing. For the majority of the time i listen to Kpop (my friend asked me to do a ‘the signs as kpop groups’ and i snorted. Btw for those interested my top 5 groups are Sistar, BESTie, f(x), Wondergirls, and 4minute) and if I DO listen to English music, well I’m particularly basic so its largely pop.

4. My favorite color is pink (hence the pink highlights and stuff in our blog aesthetic) and it always has been. I’m not a fan of hot or bright, but pastels.

5. Something really embarrassing about me is that I tend to daze out a lot, especially in crowded places or social situations, but it gets really bad when I start singing. I’m not one for self-diagnosing but I’m quite certain I’m tone-deaf, even in karaoke I never get a score above a 20 (out of 100), and when I notice I do sing 6/10 times my friend is looking at me weird asking if I was just singing.

Hey there so when i turn 18, im buying a 2003 nissan 350z with my own money.
