Knock knock.
Before the occupant of the office space answered, Peter cracked the door open and poked his head in. “Morning, Mr. Halgorn!” he chirped. “Can I come in if you’re not too busy?”
Halgorn’s eyes flicked from his computer screen to the door. His lips pursed within his beard, something that Peter noted had grown bushier over the months and gave his boss more of a wilderness man’s look. He gestured Peter forward. “Might as well. What’s up? Hippos turning on each other again?”
“When have they ever stopped?” Peter chuckled as he took his seat, though the humor went dry and awkward in his reply; that really is a concern they need to take care of before it gets wildly out of hand. “No, I actually have a revenue-boosting proposal I’d like to share with you.”
Halgorn’s eyes moved from side to side along his screen, one hand on the mouse, the other positioning a sleek, personalized pen over some files. Financial reports, good timing.
“Let’s hear it.”
“Great. Okay, so have you ever heard of this place called Achillles Den?”
Halgorn raised an eyebrow, his focus unbroken from his file. “That student-ran joint in downtown? Yeah, my daughter drags me there every couple weeks.”
Peter nodded. “So you’d know that every Saturday, they hold live shows from local artists, and that the only way you can get in is by buying tickets.”
“Or a full adult meal,” Halgorn added. Then, blinking, he turned his head completely towards his employee. “If you’re suggesting what I think you’re suggesting, you do know that you already do that, right?”
Oh, Peter was well aware, and more than raising a little bit of extra money to go to the care of the animals and maintenance of the center, Peter adored the opportunity to swim with the animals, and put on shows for the whole family to enjoy. Knowing that once every couple weeks he would get to dazzle crowds with a smile and a few dives and a swim with orcas and dolphins make it easier for the young man to get out of bed. But...
“But what I mean is something that would draw in a bigger crowd, something unique and spectacular that would keep them coming back and spreading the word.”
“Which would be…?” Halgorn prompted.
Peter raised his hands, fingers spread, feeling invisible clouds of glitter burst from the tips. “Aerial silks.”
“...What?”
“Aerial silks!” Leaning forward, Peter explained, “It’s this wonderful, exquisite form of performance art where the artist makes a dance in the air by hanging or swinging from a beautiful fabric.”
“And you know how to do that?”
Peter pulled his phone out of his pocket, nodding again as he searched for the video among the many of his family and pets. “Yep! Been practicing for months! Watch!”
And he handed the phone to Halgborn.

“Show us what you got, Pete, whoooo!” Mei clapped her slender hands as the young man stepped up to the pair of silks.
He waved at his fellow students crowded along the mirrored wall, nervous smile curled tight on his face, feet shifting about and toes pressing into the cushion. Peter had been advancing well, and he knew he did with or without the impressed cooing of their instructor. It’s just that the camera (on his phone) was rolling, and the idea that he had fallen asleep to every night and turning it into a breathtaking dream hinged upon what that camera captures.
And for the fourth time that minute, Peter took a deep breath. He straightened his back and puffed his chest, raising his hand.
The instructor’s assistant hit play.
“I’m in your waterfall. I’m in your waterfall. I’m in your waterfall…”
Peter dipped his body, one leg outstretched, arms spread upward and out like the wings of a swan. The reggae trance wove its wave into Peter’s bloodstream.
“I’m in your waterfall…”
Like he had practiced at home with his own rigged silks, Peter twirled up, catching both silks in one hand. Using the silks as the center, Peter twisted and shimmied and swirled his body around it, remembering to tone down the sensuality the song was feeding him to keep the dance below PG-13 if this was going to work.
The verse merged into the bridge, and Peter hopped up and hooked a leg around the fabrics. He twisted his torso and hooked his legs, contorting his body higher and higher to the appropriate height that Mei would allow. So far, polite claps.
He wrapped the fabrics around his hands and parted them, swinging his body up into midair splits, then swung back down to twirl his legs around each silk until each of his calves were wrapped in one. He released the wraps around his hands to spread his arms again and, with a hopefully subtle jerk of his body, set the rig to gently swing him around.
The clapping grew louder, followed by some cheers.
Now to get crazy.
Peter reached up and grabbed the silks, tugging his legs upward and jabbing them back down so that the fabrics would trap his ankles. He tilted his body between the fabrics, keeping his ankles together, until he hung completely upside down. He whipped his arms about so he’d spin wildly.
And the cheers erupted, with someone shouting, “Oh, my God, he’s pulling a P!nk!”
It was a bit of a struggle to right himself, which he had to do by bending his knees and curling in until he could reach the portions of the fabrics above him to tug up and undo the footlocks. He posed, arching his back while doing a handlock, but mostly to breathe deeply just one more time before the rundown with the sequence of moves he had prepared. With an upward swing, Peter brought himself to the split rolls, unfurling himself and properly wrapping the silks around his waist and thighs for some outside leg hangs and prone poses.
Somewhere in the middle of a hiplock, Peter lost himself in the fan and tangle of the silks, hypnotized by the suspension, like he was submerged in the color and music. Not once letting the silks stop spinning, not once touching the ground and the reality it held. It was near the end of the song that he remembered to do his star drop, and finishing it by sliding off the silks into a splits on the mat.

Halgorn huffed a chuckle and stopped the video just as the cheering grew obnoxiously loud. ‘Wow, that’s… that’s honestly really good.” He held the phone back out towards its owner.
“Thank you!” Peter said, barely containing his glee as he reached for his device. “Now think: combining the synchronized swimming in the aquarium with the aerial silks dancing. It’ll be so beautiful, that people will come in wearing their fanciest clothes!”
Halgorn frowned. “I don’t think that’s doable, Kirkland.”
Peter snapped his fingers. “I can make it doable.” Halgorn began to shake his head, and Peter hurried to add, “Look, I understand that it’s risque, so how about this: we incorporate the silks into a couple of the shows, give the audience a taste, do a test run. Then, maybe a survey? Get some thoughts on the new show to decide to keep or nix it?”
“And with what budget are we going to explore this endeavor of yours, Peter?”
Peter was going to reply don’t worry about the budget, but a quick look down on Halgorn’s desk reminded Peter that worrying about the budget was literally one of the man’s duties, and it would be easy to miss the genuine earnestness in his assurance.
“I… I can work on it, myself?”
Halgorn went to typing on his computer. “Oh?”
“Yeah… Yeah! I’m sure I have enough in my savings to invest in this, and I can maybe get some friends -- certified engineers -- to help me build the rig needed for the silks. I have a setup at home that I can bring here.”
Peter tilted his head, raising an eyebrow. “Can I?”
Halgorn rubbed his hand down his face, smoothing down the beard. “You’ll have to discuss it with your team--”
“On it!” Peter hopped out of his chair with a salute and flounced his way out of Halgorn’s office.
“Hey, hey!” Halgorn’s voice followed Peter out and down the hall, “We all will have to meet to discuss official details!”
Peter shouted over his shoulder, “Got it!”

I posted this on AO3 but decided to put it on here too
Description: A one-shot for Lockwood and Co, focusing on Lockyle. I tried for some humor but idk if it came through. Basically just a typical day at Lockwood and Co and KIPPS PUT DOWN THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER!
aka Lockwood and Lucy have been dating for a while and George finds out only after they’re engaged because of a certain Relic-woman taking up all his time, and when he finally does find out a lot of shit goes down.
The first time I noticed the new weight on my hand, it was when we were fighting a particularly humorous shifter. This Visitor, whether consciously or not, was taking the shape of three animals at once. Currently, it had the head of a lion, the belly of a hippo, and the legs of a kangaroo.
     “Liohipparoo!” A disembodied voice came from my rucksack.
    That would be the skull. As opposed to giving advice, as was requested by both Lockwood and myself on multiple occasions, it instead opted to provide a great number of sarcastic comments and ridiculous names for the creatures the shifter changed into.
    After throwing an annoyed glance in its general direction, I returned my attention to the ghost and the nuisance on my finger. The item in question was a large silver ring with a square emerald in the center, surrounded by writing that had long since worn away as to now be illegible. Lockwood had said his parents brought it home after their trip to Peru, and estimated it to be over 200 years old. He had given it to me the night before, having finally asked for my hand after two months of dating (or an agent’s equivalent of it). This was my first case as his fiancé, and the ring made my grip looser and kept digging into my finger, and was heavy enough that, after nearly an hour of playing cat and mouse with a Visitor, my blade was slowing and my arm was beginning to lower.
    My train of thought was broken by a shrill cry of “MERMACOW!”
    Indeed, the Visitor now had the body of a mermaid and the head of a cow. Lockwood ducked a spout of ectoplasm and continued twirling his rapier, keeping the Visitor penned in. I jumped in to help him, slicing at the bits of ectoplasm that were trying to escape.
    “Lucy, look out!”
    As a last attempt the shifter had swung its tail around, but both Lockwood and I dodged it easily. It was obvious it was loosing strength, but we had seen it do this before. On each occasion the ghost had disappeared into a different wall, which gave us no clue as to the location of the source. This time it went past us into the kitchen and slipped through the cupboards.
    Lockwood sighed. For the fourth time that night, we dug out our crowbars. Mrs. Poward wasn’t going to like us very much when she returned the following morning. There were already piles of paneling and wood chips in half the rooms in the house (not that it was a very large house, but still).
    We began hacking at the newest wall, with encouragement provided by the skull, which I had placed on the table out of harms way.
    “Put your back into it, woman! I can hit harder than that and I don’t even have hands."
    “Ooh hit it again there! I almost saw the board jiggle a little bit.”
    “Tell Lockwood to shift a bit to his right, I want to have a clear view when he falls on his behind.”
    Unfortunately, this was the norm for me. Sweaty excursions at odd hours of the night with a skull jabbering in my ear.
    Finally, Lockwood called for me to stop. We had been at it for ten minutes, and had found no source, no clue as to its whereabouts, nothing to help us contain the Visitor. All I had gotten was a more persistent throbbing in my finger.
    “Aren’t you going to ask me for help?”
    “We have. You've been useless.”
    Lockwood glanced at me. I gestured distractedly at the silver glass jar sitting on the kitchen table.
    “Well you haven’t asked nicely,” the ghost in question replied. “If you had I might have answered.”
    “Fine. Could you please give us any insight to the nature of the ghost, location of its Source, or any other useful information?”
    “No.“
    I groaned in frustration and lobbed a sliver of wood at it. It bounced off the jar with a very unsatisfying noise.
    “I can tell you that there is a secret room behind that wall."
    “That would be considered useful information!”
    We didn’t know much about the history of the house, or the ghost because George was out for most of the day, as was becoming increasingly common. No one knew what he was doing, but our suspicions were that he spent more time with Flo than recommend if you wanted to remain healthy, as he often returned to Portland Row caked in river mud and reeking like, well, Flo. Whatever the reason, he seemed to spend more time away from our house than he did in it, and as a result we were going into this case blind, so all we had to go on was the news that there was a secret room, and that was delivered by a talking skull, but it was enough for me.
    "The skull says that there's a secret room!" I told Lockwood, who wasn't able to hear its half of our exchange, as I began poking at the wall, hoping to find a board with a pressure release.
    Lockwood quickly joined me, starting at the other end of the wall. We worked our way in towards each other until our hands were on the same panel.
    "On three." Lockwood said, grinning at me. "One, two... three!"
    We pushed, and I felt something click, and a moment later a door that had been invisible a moment before creaked open.
    I stole a glance at Lockwood, who was already examining the passageway, checking for traps. I went back and picked up the skull, placing it back in my rucksack before squeezing past Lockwood, who was bent over poking at a pile of rat droppings as if it might be hiding a Raw-Bones, trailing my hand on the stone wall, hoping for my Touch to give me a glimpse of the past. I got nothing until I rounded the corner and found myself in a small, square room. The psychic residue was strong, and I was thrown into a vision of the past so hard that I backed into Lockwood, who was coming up behind me, having decided there was not a ghost about to jump out at us from the rat droppings, and only got a glimpse of a woman standing by the desk in the corner before my hand jerked away from the wall. I tentatively replaced it, and was again struck by the vision's strength, but this time Lockwood was there to support me, and I didn't flinch. I saw the same woman I had seen before, but this time I was closer. She was holding a large wooden box engraved with carvings of people along with what looked like hieroglyphs. She was standing by the same desk, and as I watched put the box in a drawer.
    When the scene began to repeat I wrenched myself out of the memory to find Lockwood on the other side of the room, leaning impatiently against the wall. That was the problem with Touch, you couldn't control it. You were just standing there in a trance while everything happened around you. When Lockwood saw that I was back, he raised his eyebrows questioningly.
    "The desk," I said, "Some sort of Egyptian box."
    He calmly pushed himself off the wall and strode over to the desk, pulling open the drawer. It was at that moment the shifter decided to reappear.
    Lockwood felt the psychic disturbance and left the desk, instead taking up guard duty while I located the Source. We had done this so many times in the time we've worked together that we didn't even have to speak. I just walked over to the desk and stuck my hand in the drawer. I moved it from side to side, ring scraping on the wood, until I felt the stickiness I had grown so accustomed to, the one that meant I had found the Source. Tugging out the box I had seen, now wrapped in layers of spider webs, I turned around to check on Lockwood. He was holding his own, darting in and out, faking to the right then thrusting up into the head of a dolphin. This form resulted in very high pitched clicking noises echoing around in my head, so I decided to wrap this up (pun intended).
    Pulling a silver chain net from one of my pockets, I draped it over the box, causing the ghost Lockwood had cornered to flicker, then disappear completely.
    Lockwood pulled me in for a celebratory kiss before pulling me out, back into the kitchen. I was glad for this, because I think we were both getting a bit claustrophobic.
    "Nice work in there, Luce."
“What, no kiss for little old me?”
    I ignored the voice, choosing instead to focus on Lockwood. "Thanks. Think George would like this one?"
    "Oh, he would have a field day. You know how much he likes shifters, always trying to figure out what lets them change shape."
    "Good," I said with a yawn, "didn't really want to take a trip to the furnaces."
    "Let's give it to him in the morning, we need a good night's sleep."
    We exited the house, locked it, and hailed a Night Cab. I fell asleep on the ride, and have a hazy memory of Lockwood carrying me up to his bedroom.
    When I awoke the next morning, Lockwood was already up and downstairs reading on the couch in the library. He glanced up when I walked in, and flashed me a smile, the one he reserved just for me.
    "Morning, Luce. Sleep well?"
    "Very well. Did you give George his gift yet?" I asked.
    "I thought you might want to do the honors." he responded, holding up the silver chain net containing the Source from last night's case.
    "You thought right." I said, taking the bundle from him. "Is he back yet?"
    "Yeah, he's in the kitchen."
    I turned around and made my way over to where George was writing something on the thinking cloth.
    I held my hand out to George, and was about to tell him about the shifter from last night, but was cut off by a very high-pitched squeal.
Holly came running in from where she was dusting the skull lamp in the front hall.
    "What is it? What's wrong? Is someone dying? Is there a fire?"
    Kipps, upon hearing the word 'fire', came running through spraying a fire extinguisher and screaming something nonsensical (we know not to joke about fire when he's around, apparently Inspector Barnes told him about the client's house I set fire to, and he now lives his life in fear that we will do it again (...again)).
    George's mouth was moving, but no words were coming out, and Holly had already started cleaning up the foam made by Kipps' fire extinguisher, before rushing out of the room to stop him from doing any more damage. Lockwood still remained in the library, even though the house was falling into chaos. But why was the house falling into chaos?
    My question was answered when George finally found his voice. "LuCY, WHAT IS THAT ON YOUR FINGER???"
    "LOCKWOOD, HOLLY GET IN HERE, LUCY'S GOT A RING!"
    "LUCY WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL US YOU WERE DATING?"
    It was at this moment Lockwood finally appeared, with a bemused smile on his face. Holly came rushing in after, grabbed my hand (still holding the very heavy source), examined the ring, then glanced at Lockwood.
    "So you finally got around to asking her?" she asked him.
    He just nodded in response, because George had resumed his inhuman screeching, making talking impossible. When George finally calmed down, he asked, "So, who's the lucky guy?"
    I just nodded at Lockwood. George still looked confused, so Lockwood strode across the room, cupped my face, and kissed me. It would have been one of the best, but it was cut short by George screaming louder than before, and a shout from Holly.
    "WHAT ARE YOU DOING GEORGE NO DON'T TAKE YOUR CLOTHES OFF!!!!"
    This got our attention, and we turned around just in time to see George running out of the house in his underwear with Holly giving chase, and Kipps setting up a video camera.
    We later learned three things; one, the box we found contained a canonic jar containing the organs of a dead guy, two, that Kipps made a bunch of copies of the video he took and will use it as blackmail, and three, that George is very bad at dealing with emotions.

Return of the ‘research’. Episodes 13 and 14. It’s actually been a bit since I’ve watched anything/taken notes, and the notes for ep 13 - 16 are backlogged. I don’t remember what I wrote, lol. 
Episode 13: Mermaid’s Ritual
1. Taki is just a clam. Not a mer-clam or an anthro clam. Just a clam.
2. Hanon says she’s never seen the Pink Palace before. Why not? I assume the princesses didn’t really leave their own realms before the whole Panthalassa thing, but then didn’t Noel and Rina know each other before? Maybe not? I might be remembering wrong, but I don’t think that Noel and Karen have ever met before either...
3. Gaito’s magic well jiggles into existence. 
4. More underwater physics mysteries: Taki, in human form, and Hippo walk on the castle floor, while the mermaids swim through the castle. Later, Momo swims through some kind of barrier, so it’s implied that there is a difference between the seawater and whatever is happening in the castle. Sidenote: I watched TroPre recently, and they also have an underwater castle. It’s probably not a bad idea to look at how they handled that a little closer? idk it’s probably not explained more than ~magic~
5. Hippo and Nikora are worried that Lucia won’t be able to truly open up to Aqua Regina during the ritual if she is being so obedient. This is one of those single lines that could be more interesting if elaborated on. Oh well, I guess that’s why I’m doing this whole thing.
6. Kaito tries to visit the hotel, only to find it empty. He’s kinda realizing how bad he messed up, but worse than last time. He can’t focus as he surfs later.
7. Momo casually kidnaps Kaito, and Kaito’s friends calmly watch as their friend rides a baby dolphin out to sea. Kaito also doesn’t seem too worried about this. Guys...
8. Taki plays a conch shell flute. Rina says the flute is magic. I don’t remember this flute being significant, but I’ll see?
9. Momo successfully brought Kaito into the palace. I would love to see how that went down bc at this point, Kaito doesn’t think he’s any different from any other human man, so from his perspective a baby dolphin is trying to drown him.
10. Kaito sees human Lucia in mermaid Lucia. My dude, you have figured this out like a month ago.
11. Gaito and squad bust through like the Kool-Aid man. Yuri floats through the castle with a full grand piano. I’m assuming this is her version of T-posing.
12. Kaito is once again shown to be immune to Yuri’s music.
13. Maria asserts her dominance as the unofficial leader of the Dark Lovers.
14. The Dark Lovers make a whirlpool. This somehow makes a tasteful peekaboo rip in Kaito’s new threads. Kaito and Lucia are sent in opposite directions.
15. After waking up, Lucia heads for the nearest Kaito-shaped object. Whoops all Gaito.
16. Gaito is a straight creep. Good villain tho.
17. Gaito seems surprised when the pink pearl glows? Implications are that, despite having the yellow and indigo (and kind of the orange) pearls, he’s not really done anything with them except put them in a crown.
18. The mer-trio face off with the Dark Lovers and Gaito. Gaito mocks Rina, and Hanon is surprised that Gaito looks like Kaito. Welcome to the plot.
19. Super Love Songs is a bop.
20. Let’s check in on Kaito. He’s alive. Time for him to look longingly at Lucia as she sings. I’m begging these two to talk. Kaito is magic-ed away from the castle and back into his surfing gear.
21. I think it’s very cute that Lucia is nervous to go back to school! I also really like that Kaito used what was left of the OG birthday present to make a new one.
Episode 14: Memories of a Starry Sky
1. Hanon introduced Lucia to the mermaid fortune telling cards, and the audience to a new eyecatch. I think this is a cute way of doing the eyecatches!
2. Hanon convinces Lucia to make and wear a beaded necklace bc the cards said so.
3. Rina gets two love letters from two of her classmates. She is confused as the girls run away giggling. 
4. Lucia pockets her pendent to wear her beads. Why not wear them both? Last episode, you “swore on your pearl” to help Aqua Regina, and you’re just gonna slide your pearl in your girl pockets?! It’s for the drama.
5. Lucia and Hanon go to the beach to look for Kaito, who is going to the train station to visit his parents’ graves. The girls run into Taro, and Hanon leaves Lucia to hang off of his arm.
6. Lucia and Kaito have a comedy of errors moment, so now Lucia is ahead of Kaito, who has her pendent bc it fell out of her pocket.
7. Taro fills Hanon in on what Kaito is doing. Rina runs into Hanon. The girls plan on helping Lucia look for Kaito bc of Lucia’s poor sense of direction. 
8. Lucia is lost enough that Kaito is ahead of her again without them crossing paths. Kaito gets the pendent wet and it glows bright pink, alerting Maria of where the pearl is.
9. While pondering why Lucia’s pendent is here in the first place, Kaito hears Yuri’s piano music coming from the nearby church. The church should have an organ, not a piano. Whatever tho
10. Kaito confronts Maria, who demands the pearl from him. He plays dumb and Maria resorts to violence immediately. She sticks him to a wall and caresses his cheek. Jail for Maria. This show is a lot hornier than I remember. Anyway, Kaito finally connects the dots and realizes who his mermaid is.
11. Maria pacifies Hanon and Rina by icing their mics. I guess the pearls don’t work when covered in ice? whatever it adds to the drama i guess
12. Lucia gets attacked with ice and Kaito looses it, shooting forehead light. This saves the girls. This also apparently takes away Kaito’s memories of just him figuring out who Lucia is. Bad plot point. The story would have been more interesting if he kept that knowledge. Would he confront her? Would he try to help her without talking too her? Maybe he assumes there’s a reason why she didn’t just tell him? If you’re not going to elaborate, don’t bother putting the plot point in at all.

The Book “The Tell-Tale Brain” in Three Sentences
Summary by James Clear
Humans are unique among the animal kingdom because of their brain. The human brain evolved through two methods: biological evolution, which takes a long time and cultural evolution, which is incredibly fast by comparison. These evolutionary processes have resulted in the development of mirror neurons, which contribute to our remarkable levels of creativity, ambition, communication.
The Tell-Tale Brain summary
This is my book summary of The Tell-Tale Brain by V.S. Ramachandran. My notes are informal and often contain quotes from the book as well as my own thoughts. This summary also includes key lessons and important passages from the book.
The author has unearthed many of his discoveries by working with people who have interesting or strange brain injuries and disabilities.
The Heinsenberg Principle reveals that at the subatomic level even our most basic sense of cause and effect breaks down.
The deciphering of the genetic code in the 1950s marked the birth of modern biology.
Humans are different, plain and simple. We are not “just another ape.”
It is impossible to understand the human brain without understanding how it evolved.

Fascinating: many traits evolved from previous traits with very different functions. For example, wings evolved from scales. The original purpose was insulation not flight.
Evolution found ways to radically repurpose functions in the ape brain into remarkably more powerful functions in the human brain.

Ramachandran loves “small science” which doesn't require big teams or lots of technology and can be repeated by almost anyone.
Homogeneity breeds weakness. Science (and life) needs many different styles and viewpoints.
Application for mental models: Many scientists let the most expensive equipment drive their research and not the most interesting questions. If your lab spends $1 million on a state of the art brain imaging machine, then you tend to get pressured to use it at all times. Every scientific problem gets forced through the lens of one machine. Consider how often we do this with our thinking and our decision making. How often do we let one identity (politics, religion, capitalism, etc.) dictate all of our thinking? (See Paul Graham's “Keep your identity small.”) How often does the highest paid person's mental model win out? (See: HiPPOs.) Be careful to not let investments overpower mental models.
Humans are part of the animal kingdom, descendants of apes, but also transcendent and unique among the animal kingdom. We are both.
Incremental changes do not always lead to incremental results. Sometimes there is a “phase transition” like heating a block of ice from 31 degrees to 32 degrees.
Phase transitions can occur in society as well. The rise of the Internet, new political orders, etc.
Sometime around 150,000 years ago, this phase transition happened within the human brain.
We can view evolution as going through two avenues: biological, which takes a very long time and cultural, which is shockingly fast by comparison. Ideas evolve much faster than bodies do.
The cortex of most other mammal brains is mostly smooth and flat whereas the human cortex has grown so much that it has developed many folds and valleys to increase surface area (the walnut-like appearance).
The cortex is especially well developed in dolphins and primates.
An intention tremor is an example of an oscillating feedback loop in the human body. (Thinking in Systems makes the point that delays in feedback loops lead to oscillations in systems.)
Biology so clearly drives behavior. Damage to the basal ganglia, for example, can lead to Parkinson's and a shuffling gate. This new behavior (a shuffling walk) is not a choice on the patient's part. It is simply a consequence of changes in the neurological structure of the brain. We are quick to admit the influence of biological factors on behavior in cases like these, but we too often overlook them otherwise.
Wernicke's area in the brain plays a critical role in language and deciphering meaning. It is 7x larger in human than in other primates and is one of the key biological differences between our brain and other animals.
Some of the complex traits that embody human nature: ambition, empathy, and foresight.
At least three areas have developed extraordinarily rapidly in human brains relative to other primates: Wernicke’s area, the prefrontal cortex, and the IPL region in each parietal lobe. These three areas structurally evolved in small steps, but functionally they led to massive leaps forward compared to other primates.
Within some of these regions there is a special class of nerve cells called mirror neurons. These fire not only when you perform an action, but also when you watch someone else perform an action.
Mirror neurons are incredibly important and are an area of huge research focus right now. They may be central to social learning, imitation, and the cultural transmission of skills and attitudes.
Mirror neurons are hyper developed in humans compared to animals. This allowed humans to learn new skills within just one or two generations as opposed to the hundreds or thousands of generations required for genetic evolution. Cultural evolution operates at light speed compared to genetic evolution.

Experience modifies the brain by strengthening or weakening the synapses that link neurons together.
The regions of the brain are not cleanly divided in their roles and functions, but rather work together in a remarkable fashion. They are strongly linked and some regions can even take over functions for damaged areas. There is much redundancy among the brain areas.
Humans are the only species to use neural plasticity to such an extreme degree. You've probably noticed how reliant humans are on their parents compared to say, how a baby giraffe can walk within hours of being born. This is not a weakness, but rather a strength because it allows humans to maintain remarkable brain plasticity during the first ten years of life.
Vision is so incredibly powerful for living creatures that it evolved separately in different species.
When you see something the light rays seen by your eye are converted into nerve impulses. There is no image in your head. Just impulses that describe it to your brain – like writing could describe how a chair looks even though the words on the paper look nothing like the chair itself.
Wieskrantz’s studies on blindsight offer an interesting look at nonconscious sight. The patient was able to point at a spot on the wall correctly time after time despite saying that he could not see the spot at all.
The Coolidge Effect: the phenomenon where males are sexually excited by new partners over and over again. Proven by a seldom known rat study where a sex deprived rat has sex with a female until exhausted. Then a new female is introduced and it happens again. And then again even though the rat was seemingly exhausted before.
Synesthesia occurs when someone experiences the combining of senses. For example, the number 7 might seem red or chicken might taste “pointy.”
In the fetus there is a massive over connection of neurons and then they are gradually pruned down to strengthen and prioritize certain connections.
One fascinating explanation of synesthesia is that two adjacent areas of the brain are crosswired which leads to increased crosstalk between, say, colors and numbers.
Interesting theory: a high percentage of artists and creators have been reported to have synesthesia. It's quite possible that the cross linkage between neurons that leads to synesthesia also enables artists to create metaphors and connections between ideas in an easier fashion than most people.
It is very possible that the crosswiring of adjacent areas of the brain was selected for by evolution because it enabled those people to be more creative (and thus increase the odds of survival) with the unharmful side effect that some people would experience synesthesia.
This is how science works: begin with simple, tractable questions that can be answered and will pave the way to the big questions.
Humans mature at a glacial pace compared to most animals. What do we gain from this vulnerable period that would seem to decrease our odds of survival? The answer is culture.
Culture is transferred from person to person through language and imitation. Accurate imitation depends on our unique human ability to see the world from someone else’s vantage point.
Humans can develop a mental model of what others think of them. This is known as a “theory of mind” and our ability to construct these scenarios in our head is unique to humans.
There are still many important questions about the evolution of the human mind that remain unanswered. Here are Ramachandran’s five big unanswered questions about the evolution of the human brain:
Wallace’s Problem: The human brain reached its present size about 300,000 years ago, yet many of our modern attributes like tool making, fire, and perhaps even language appeared only about 75,000 years ago. Why did it take so long for all of this latent potential to blossom? And why did it blossom so suddenly?
2) Homo habilis likely created the first tools 2.4 million years ago. What was the role of tool use in shaping human cognition?
3) Why was there a sudden explosion in human cognition around 60,000 years ago? Widespread clothing and shelters show up around this time. (Jared Diamond refers to this as “the great leap.”)
4) Why are humans so good at reading one another’s intentions? Why can we develop theories of others minds? Why do humans have better neural circuits for this than any other animal?
5) How did language evolve?
Natural selection can only select for expressed abilities, not latent ones.
Giacomo Rizzolatti's study showed that monkeys had some ability to read another monkey’s mind, which means they had some mirror neurons.
Mirror neurons are like “nature’s own virtual reality simulations of the intentions of other beings.” They allow you to envision what someone else is doing and to predict what will happen next. This is how we interpret other people’s complex intentions.
Mirror neurons also allow you to imitate the skills of others, which makes it possible for us to inherit the skills and culture of others.
Anytime you watch someone doing something, the neurons your brain would use to do the same thing become active as if you yourself were doing it.
The brain and free will: Your brain has to inhibit yourself from imitating everything you see, so there are some inhibitory circuits that cut off those actions. This might be how free will occurs. You are presented with many options and your brain ignores all but one of them.
The brain has multiple layers of communication between neurons. If you see someone experiencing pain but your skin receptors do not experience pain, then your body knows it is not happening to you and so you empathize with that person rather than actually feel their pain.
Mirror neurons appear to be wired from birth to some degree. A newborn baby, just a few hours old, will often echo its mother by sucking its tongue out when watching its mother do it.
Mirror neurons have multiple functions. They allow you to predict another person's intentions. They allow you to adopt someone else's point of view and to see yourself as others see you (self-awareness). They allow you to transform a map in one dimension into a map in another dimension (ex. visual to auditory).

The Isolation Principle. There appears to be some aspect of isolation in the brain that can lead to enhanced creativity. For example, when autistic children have damaged or poorly functioning areas of the brain it often opens up the ability for one area (like the right parietal lobe) to receive more attention and results in remarkable creativity (like drawing).
Idea: I also wonder how much other areas of the brain dampen signals to a given area and when they are damaged (like in autistic children) reduced dampening leads to greater creativity.
It's possible regular folks have latent creative talent waiting to be unleashed but it is being held back by inhibition from other brain areas (which is normal) and only arises when those inhibitors are damaged.
There were some remarkable brain studies conducted in Australia, which used TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) to deactivate parts of normal people's brains for a few moments. Almost instantly they could draw better or perform mathematical feats. This supports The Isolation Principle.
The process of vision is carried out through a series of processes and feedback loops in the brain. This occurs in such a way that multiple visual options are presented, but only one wins out – the final image you see. In this sense, vision and hallucination are closely related. We are always “hallucinating” and our brain selects the one hallucination that seems to most closely match reality based on the external stimuli we receive.
Our minds prefer symmetrical faces. Even minor deviations in symmetry are seen as undesirable. There is an evolutionary explanation for this. Parasitic infestations During infancy can cause small variations in symmetry. So, biological health is somewhat tied to symmetry.
Interestingly, the male brain may prefer blondes over brunettes because it is easier to identify certain ailments like jaundice in a fair blonde complexion than in brunettes. In other words, it's easier to judge if a blonde is a healthy mate.
The self consists of many components and the notion of one, unitary self may be an illusion.

The human brain and body seem to have a default tendency for harmony. We feel tension that needs to be resolved if there is a mismatch between our conscious mind and nonconcious body. (Extreme examples: transsexual man trapped in female body or phantom limb.)
Neuroscience is currently at the stage chemistry was at in the 19th century. Grouping together the basic elements of the field and not yet attempting any grand, all-encompassing theories.
Science tells us that humans are animals, another type of beast. But, importantly, we don't feel that way. We feel like angels who aspire to become something more than a mere animal. So, perhaps we are both an animal and an angel.

10 big things you need to know about Assassin's Creed Odyssey
After getting our first in-depth glimpse of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey during Ubisoft’s E3 2018 press conference, we’ve been itching to get our hands on a control and our eyes all over that Ancient Greek setting. 
Now, we’ve had the chance to play the game for an hour and we’ve had a good rummage around the islands of Delos and Mykonos, and we’re ready to tell you some of the biggest and most important changes Odyssey will bring to the Assassin’s Creed series.
The series may have returned to its annual release cycle, but Odyssey doesn’t feel like a simple re-hash of Origins set in a different time and place. Instead, it manages to takes the steps towards being an RPG that Origins first took even further. It could actually well be that Assassin’s Creed will slide into the RPG space that’s been left open by BioWare, which is focused on Anthem. 
But enough teasing, here are some of the biggest things you need to know about Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (apart from its October 5 release date).
It’s set in Ancient Greece, hundreds of years before Origins
While Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is ostensibly a sequel to Assassin’s Creed Origins, it’s actually set around 400 years before it. The year in Odyssey is 431 BCE and you’ll find yourself in Ancient Greece during the time of the Peloponnesian War being fought between Athens and Sparta.
This is the most ancient Assassin’s Creed setting yet and it actually pre-dates the formation of the Brotherhood as well as the Creed.
You have two character options
Previous Assassin’s Creed games have allowed you to play as a woman, but it’s always been part of a story that has you jumping between controlling a male and a female assassin. This time you choose one or the other – Alexios or Kassandra – and you play the entire game just as them. 
It doesn’t matter which of them you choose – you’ll be able to access the same abilities and skill trees. The choice is really just for looks and it won’t change the way you play. Your chosen protagonist is an ambitious mercenary in the game – not on either side of the war at first. 
We played as Kassandra in our demo and definitely would do so again. She’s a likeable protagonist and, not only that, she genuinely looks like she could be a capable mercenary.
The traditional hidden blade is gone
The hidden blade has always felt like such a staple of the Assassin’s Creed games that this may surprise you. Just because the traditional hidden blade isn’t in the game, however, doesn’t mean you have absolutely nothing like it. Instead, you have the broken Spear of Leonidas, the historic Spartan King. 
Whether you choose to play Alexios or Kassandra, you are a descendant of Leonidas and the spear is gifted to you at the start of the game. Largely it works in a similar manner to the hidden blade – you can still stealth assassinate enemies, for example – and you can upgrade and improve it as the game goes along. But, being an artifact of the First Civilization this is a pretty powerful weapon to have in your arsenal from the beginning, and your connection to it is important. 
Oh, and it’s good for one hit stealth assassinations on enemies that are either on your level or sitting just one above it. 
There’s multi-choice dialogue
Another of many big changes – for the first time Assassin’s Creed will have dialogue options. In the style of BioWare games, players will be able to engage in conversations with other characters and choose what they want to say from a range of pre-set options. The choices you make in conversations can change the course of the story as well as your relationship with the NPCs you’re conversing with. 
We weren’t one hundred percent sure on this before we played the game – voice acting and scripts haven’t always been the high point of Assassin’s Creed games – but Odyssey really pulls it off. We didn’t converse with every character in the game in our short time with it, of course, but the voice acting we did encounter was solid, faces were expressive and the script felt much sharper than usual. We even exhaled through our nose in appreciation at some humor at one point! 
There’s romance
Speaking of dialogue and big changes, there are now romance options in Assassin’s Creed. It doesn’t matter whether you play as Alexios or Kassandra, you can pursue a relationship with any of the eligible characters. The NPCs you’re free to romance don’t just exist as mannequins for your pursuit, though. Two of the romance options we encountered were rounded characters with their own aims, lives and complexities, and getting to know them is a process.
Abilities and skills have evolved
Combat in Odyssey also goes down slightly more of an RPG path than Origins did. The skill tree introduced in the last game has returned, although this time the separation between assassin, warrior and hunter combat is a little more distinct and less overlapping. 
This means you can really focus on one particular playstyle and raise your skills in it to a really high level, or take a more balanced approach. 
What’s really useful, though, is that when you unlock abilities on your skill tree you can map them to your controller buttons. We mapped a nice mix of abilities – a flaming sword, healing, the Leonidas kick and a shield grab. 
This meant that when we were being overwhelmed in battle we simply had to hold down a bumper and tap the relevant button to seize an enemies’ shield from them and throw it at them to give us the chance to turn around and slash at someone else. Or, we could gain a little bit of health back.
You do need to have some adrenaline in your shiny new bar to use these moves so they’re not available to you constantly in battle, but building up your adrenaline levels is simply a matter of continuing to fight as normal. 
These changes to combat are a definite positive for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and we enjoyed fights a lot more than we did in Origins. It adds a diversity to your options and you feel like you’ve really got a chance when you’re backed up against a wall.
There are new animals
Remember how delightful yet detrimental to you Bayek’s health was when the Egypt of Origins was populated with living, breathing creatures such as crocodiles, hippos and cats? Well, there are all new creatures in Odyssey and you can still hunt them. 
There are bears, sharks, dolphins and even whales to see. It was genuinely thrilling to be sailing our ship (actually we were directing the dozens of our men rowing it) and see dolphins leap up out of the bright blue waves alongside us. 
Sharks we’d be less keen to see, but we were told when a ship sinks in the water they’ll draw in to eat the unfortunate soldiers who fall in. As if you needed any more of an incentive to win your sea battles.
You can fight everyone but there are consequences
Given you’re not strictly an assassin this time around you’re not restricted by the Creed. That means you can fight and kill pretty much anyone you want. But don’t think there’s no consequences for this. 
Breaking the law will result in a bounty being placed on your head and other mercenaries will come for you. Just how many of them seek you out will depend entirely on how bad you’ve been. It’s not permanent, though, and you can deal with the problem yourself or simply pay off the bounty on your head.
There are big, big battles
There’s a big war going on and you can’t avoid it completely. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will feature huge 300 soldier-strong battles and throw you into the thick of it. Some of these battles will be necessary as part of the game’s narrative and sometimes taking part in them will be totally optional. They’re a real test of your combat skills and the one we experienced was extremely fun, if slightly stressful. 
You’ll find yourself surrounded by those with you and against you and even though you may set your sights on one enemy you’d really like to take down, you always have to be aware of others who have their heart on stabbing you in the back or leveling the back of your skull with their shield. We found using our abilities and being quick on our feet was absolutely essential to success when fighting these battles. 
There’s still a modern day plot
Though Bayek and Aya from Origins are nowhere to be found here, the modern day story which follows Layla continues. Now, we don’t know anything about where this storyline will be going (and, as usual, it seems like you can probably ignore it if you’re not interested) but we’re looking forward to finding out.
