277: Mirel Wagner // When the Cellar Children See the Light of Day
Tumblr media
When the Cellar Children See the Light of Day Mirel Wagner 2014, Sub Pop (Bandcamp)
Title of this one makes me think of a joke my aunt told me when I was little about a kid whose parents tell him he can do whatever he wants while they’re away except open the basement door—after a bunch of rigamarole, he of course eventually does, and what does he see? Trees, the sky…
There is not a lot of that (or any) humour in Mirel Wagner’s music, but Cellar Children is hitting with me more on this listen than it has previously. An Ethiopian Finn who sings in unaccented English, Wagner’s spare folk blues brings to mind at various points PJ Harvey, Fiona Apple, and Jack White, doing the kind of skulking olde timey murder balladry that really had a moment in the late ‘00s to early ‘10s (does anybody else remember the Builders and the Butchers?). The majority of these songs are no more than Wagner’s voice and acoustic guitar, and she is capable of transfixing without any talent show octave jumping or even raising her voice. She simply draws you in with her tone the same way you’re drawn in by noticing someone calmly staring at you from across the room, or catching a glimmer of eyes in the trees. I like it; for what it’s worth, my girlfriend loves it and demanded to know why I didn’t show her the record earlier.
youtube
As of 2024, it’s Wagner’s last record to date. But she did create an Instagram account last year, so perhaps we’ll hear more from her yet.

Radio Company - Drowning 2019
Radio Company is an American collaborative rockband formed in 2018 by actor and singer-songwriter Jensen Ackles (known from Supernatural, The Boys, Dark Angel) and singer-songwriter Steve Carlson. The two artists have been friends for years and have collaborated previously. Ackles and Carlson were originally roommates when they began writing together.
In the past, the two previously wrote a song titled "Different Town" for Carlson's Rockumentary of the same name. In 2018, the two formed Radio Company in Austin and began writing their first album, Vol. 1, which was released later that fall. The album peaked at number 151 on the US Billboard 200, number 18 on the US Top Rock Albums chart, and at number 1 on the Top Heatseekers chart where it stayed for two weeks. The band debuted at number five on the US Emerging Artists chart.

Palestinian pop singer Bashar Murad is hoping to represent Iceland at the Eurovision Song Contest in May and bring “a Palestinian voice to the main stage”. [...] Murad is competing in the national final with a song co-written by Einar Stefansson of the Icelandic band Hatari, known for raising a banner showing Palestinian flags during the 2019 Eurovision Contest. [...] In Iceland’s domestic qualification, singers of any nationality can participate if they sing their song in the first semifinal in Icelandic. Murad, who was born in and lives in occupied East Jerusalem, said it was difficult to learn the song in Icelandic, but he found some similarities to Arabic. His entry, Wild West, tells the story of challenging boundaries and chasing dreams against all odds. “I wanted to illustrate how many obstacles as Palestinians we have to go through in order to be heard … we’re excluded from every mainstream platform,” he said. “Everyone has theories about my participation. And everyone is politicising my existence when I’m really just a human who had a dream and applied for this competition fair and square.” When asked if Murad wants Israel to participate in the competition, he said, “Of course, I don’t want my occupier to be there.” “But my main focus right now is to be able to bring, for the first time in history, a Palestinian voice to the main stage.”
Iceland’s domestic ESC qualification, Söngvakeppnin, will be decided today (2 Mar 2024).

Based on this silly Thread on the Bird App, so I had to draw Cleo and Joe Hills having a music session. Plus the setting this season so far is giving me Appalachian Mountain meets Northwest Coast vibes

345: Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld // Never Were the Way She Was
Tumblr media
Never Were the Way She Was Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld 2015, Constellation (Bandcamp)
My prevailing memory of seeing Sarah Neufeld and Colin Stetson’s duo performance in a small room at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa was the way they spent much of the performance with their eyes locked on one another. When violinist Neufeld became lost in her own playing and arched backward, in the same motion Stetson would lean forward over his hulking, steampunk bass saxophone, his legs braced wide. It was as though the two of them were bound at the neck by a long, invisible leather strap. In the most intense passages, they would square off barely a foot apart, like two rams, the veins in Stetson’s sweaty neck and forehead standing out, Neufeld’s angled forearm a blur of precision cuts. Despite also seeing Stetson’s SORROW, an arrangement of Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony for a 12-piece band, during the same festival, it was the intimate physicality of the duo show with Neufeld that had the bigger impact on me.
youtube
While Stetson has frequently performed in larger combos (as has Neufeld with Arcade Fire, for that matter), in solo and duo performances his uniqueness as a player is more legible. On Never Were the Way She Was, he uses his uncanny circular breathing technique to create ogrish drones (“With the Dark Hug of Time”), loop-like melodic phrases (“The Sun Roars Into View”), and even to emulate broken techno beats (“The Rest of Us”). Stetson is a pretty physically jacked guy, and when you see him do this stuff in person it’s a bit like watching a blacksmith going at his forge—on record it can be easy for an inattentive listener to miss the exertions required to produce these sounds. But when you start tuning in to the fact all of this groaning cacophony is produced by one man’s laboured lungs, its rawness and minor imprecisions become captivating.
Neufeld takes centre stage on the more somber, post-rocky tunes like the title track, her violin weeping rust as she overlooks a grey bay, Stetson contributing various fog horns and stomach upset. Now and again she wordlessly sings, but it’s always recorded distantly, like a memory of some ever-present sorrow you refuse to allow to surface. On “In the Vespers,” she sketches out a tricky rhythm that Stetson eventually echoes on a tenor sax, the pair running through an odd-time workout that would sound like prog were in not for the chilly clarity of her phrasing, the way the energy decays once again into remorse.
The pair’s previous collaboration was a 2013 film score (Blue Caprice), and the record is of a piece with the influential work Stetson has subsequently done as a soundtrack composer (notably Ari Aster’s Hereditary). As with fellow Aster collaborator the Haxan Cloak, Stetson’s work has helped to define the sound of contemporary unease. If you’ve watched a recent horror movie or psychological thriller, the palette of Never Were the Way She Was will already be familiar—but here the pieces aren’t tied to any preconceived scenario, and the interplay between the two musicians gives it a dynamism and complete-in-itself mood all its own.

Rick having a panic attack while making love to Michonne (for the first time in 8 years) and then watching her see it, recognize it, and pull him out of it just by placing his hand on her chest to feel her warmth and her heartbeat, is something I personally don’t think I will ever recover from. AND THEN! AND THEN! Seeing him come to literal life and mount her ????? Like his old self would???! The fan-fictions I’ve read over the years did NOT prepare me for that. Contemplating sliding into Danai’s dms to dramatically thank her for completing me.
