erin swallowed hard. she’d never been good with her emotions, especially in front of other people. she preferred to feel in private, keeping up a front for those around her. she wasn’t about to show a sign of weakness, much less to sarah. “are you actually that concerned? or are you looking for something to use against me?” harsh? perhaps. but lashing out tended to be one of her instincts, one she’d developed as a teenager and from time to time came to ahead as an adult despite her best efforts. “i’m fine. i don’t need you to try and protect me. i can look after myself.”

there was a tightening in erin’s chest, one that told her that she’d made the wrong choice. it hadn’t been easy, a rock and a hard place some might have called it, trying to work out the lesser of two evils. either way, evil always prevailed. “it could have gone differently.” she admitted, her voice soft, without the command and confidence that normally shone through. “i could have made things different, better.” she’d been told long ago not to beat herself up over these things, that sometimes that hard truth was that you couldn’t save everyone, not every single time. but it didn’t stop erin from feeling defeated. “i should have made a better call. that’s what i’m apologising for.”
