It’s no secret that he’s the favourite of the three ⏤ the most efficient, the most compliant, and the one most likely to put his head down and just get on with the job, no complaints, no questions. Even still, the feeling of something wrapping around his neck caught him by surprise, gaze following the length of the leash to the hand of the god looming over him. Huh, well that’s new. 

The words that accompany the action stun him, at a loss of how to answer that. Not every day he’s made speechless, always seeming to have some quick witted reply or snarky comment but right now, there’s nothing, the observation replaying in his mind. Was Khonshu fucking flirting with him? Lips tug into a smirk, head tilting up to regard the other with a mischievous glint in dark eyes. ❝ You plannin’ on doin’ something ‘bout that or are ya content just lookin’, jefe? ❞

That stings more than he’d like to admit. After everything he’s done to protect Steven, to keep him safe and sheltered from all the awful things that had happened to them, to give him a normal life... He never meant for him to see this, any of this. But having control of the body had been more of a struggle these past few months, and keeping Steven blissfully unaware was becoming more and more difficult. 

And yet, despite Steven’s hurtful comment, Marc remains calm and patient with him. All this is new and scary for Steven, he can’t fault him for lashing out. ❝ Steven, I’m trying to keep us safe. I need you to let me keep us safe. I can protect us. ❞

To say Steven was lost, was putting it mildly. Amongst the crowded market, he had gotten turned around until some kind soul had approached him to offer help. Trying to ask for help from passerbys had gone poorly -- he didn’t know how to speak Arabic. ❝ Um.. yeah- do you know the way to the airport? ❞ He wasn’t supposed to be here, didn’t want to be here. Going back home was the only thing on his mind.

A person, he can make sure never upsets him again, but something deeper than that and he struggles. He’s not like Marc; he’s not as good at being patient and comforting, so this is the best he can offer.

While he might not know Jake as well as he knows Steven, he’s a part of the system just like the rest of them and getting along with everyone in the system was for the best for all of them, whether he approved of Jake’s methods of keeping them alive or not. All that aside, they have at least one thing in common; they both held trauma of their childhood. They both held rage and resentment towards their late mother, both felt neglected by their father and both wished they had been dealt another hand at life, a better life. That’s why Steven had the memories he had, he supposed. To have a chance at living a normal life, a happy life.
