When Aredhel gains permission to leave Gondolin, the twins request to accompany her, wishing to live in Hithlum with their grandparents rather than the city’s constricting stone. 

Turgon is less willing to allow them this, until Vorindë suggests they be hooded and led beyond the mountains, thus keeping the way into Gondolin a secret. 

They’re less enthusiastic about Aredhel’s deviation from her stated plans, but with little choice other than to turn west without a guard, they follow her. Upon coming to Doriath, Vorindë and Vórion alone are allowed to pass the borders, their mother being of the northern Sindar, and their father having such close ties to Círdan. 

During their time in Doriath, they largely (and contentedly) live as Celeborn’s foster children.
