Sasori’s nb & considers himself agender to be precise. He accepts all pronouns but he/him pronouns are used most frequently. In all aspects Sasori has gone out of his way to liken himself as much to a doll or “ puppet ” as possible & this is perhaps another reflection of that process. Though he is uncannily life like in all other ways, in part attributed to being built from a real human base, no, he hasn’t actually bothered with anatomical correctness. Reason being that he finds this to be just pointless to his ~aesthetic~.
Furthermore, while Sasori is comfortable projecting certain aspects of masculinity, he typically teeters over to more feminine aspects frequently & preferably. Appearance wise, Sasori does not like to look like a man as such. A very pretty young boy is as far as he's comfortable with as far as male presentation goes. He prefers to look feminine & doll like & as he sees himself as more youthful & beautiful this way, so his overall appearance can be rather ambiguous. The best way to describe Sasori’s appearance is young & angelic with no completely obvious gender on either side.
In line with the above, no, Sasori has never had any romantic flames in any way. Sasori lived most of his life, even while human, isolated from others. His great skill set him apart from any in his age group & his mastery of puppets frequently othered him further, given in Suna puppet users were often considered oddities in the first place. ( Which I believe was suggested with Kankuro ) Dire loneliness was one of the overarching factors that warped his psyche. Kumoshi was the only living person in Suna who treated Sasori like a human being, & not a form of object, be it a weapon to serve the village or a column on a pedestal only to be looked up to. Since then, the only other living people Sasori has found comfort & a sense of kinship with are the Akatsuki. His loyalty to the organisation is truly genuine.
Sasori has no filter, he’s extremely blunt no matter who he is speaking to. Besides Itachi he is one of the members of Akatsuki who talks the least, however in stark contrast to Itachi he isn’t ever polite about it. If Sasori has something to say he’ll say it regardless to what anyone thinks about it. Canonly, almost everyone BUT Sasori was prone to using honorifics when speaking to others. Sasori rarely ever used them. ( Never to my knowledge ) Where as Itachi almost always used them. He has ZERO qualms when it comes to cutting others down, using harsh / foul language & can be particularly insulting when he wants to be. Sasori will read you for fifth at a moments notice. Its a talent he has.
While he was able to eat Sasori’s favourite food was MAPO DOUFU. He tended to enjoy spicy dishes the best. He also had a massive sweet tooth & was a fan of all sweets, particularly those in the caramel family. On top of that, Sasori was & is a decent cook, contrast to his grandma who wasn’t fond of the culinary side of things which pushed him to take an interest in this himself, especially if he wanted to eat a proper meal at any point. It should be noted that while Sasori no longer needs to eat he does actually still sleep. This is not so much done to recover physical stamina but rather mental stamina & to pass the time. Sasori may not have a body to keep recharged anymore but he still has a consciousness, which does still benefit from sleeping.
Sasori’s mother & father had never planned for him to become a shinobi. They did not want that life for their child & had kept him majorly away from it while they were alive. After their deaths, however, Chiyo taught Sasori puppetry to cheer him up. It worked for a short time but Sasori’s talent became obvious to all around him which resulted in the council of Sunagakure pushing Chiyo to train Sasori for combat, due to their desire not to waste this talent when they believed their village was struggling. Chiyo reluctantly agreed & Sasori proved to be as talented in battle as he was in the workshop.
Sasori is in fact distantly related to Chikamatsu Monzaemon, which is precisely how the Chikamatsu’s collection wound up in Chiyo’s possession, having been passed down their family for generations. As a child, Sasori was occasionally referred to as “Chikamatsu’s second coming”, or “Chikamatsu reborn” in acknowledgement to his prodigal talents, something which he took great pride in as he always studied & idolised the man. Even to this day if Sasori was given the option to face anyone dead or alive in a friendly battle of skill Chikamatsu would be his choice without hesitation.
Another, probably more controversial headcanon I have is that Sasori is also in fact related to an unknown member of the Uzumaki clan. This is known possibly only by Chiyo however. Sasori’s grandfather was never given any identity in the series that I know of & as far as we saw he didn’t get his bright red hair from his grandmother. Chiyo also makes no reference to any husband or indication that she ever had one leaving Sasori’s grandfather a complete mystery. Taking the known traits of the Uzumaki clan relatives we know of and applying them to Sasori does make a lot of sense in my opinion, particularly when I think of the amount of Chakra Sasori was able to effortlessly expel and his precise control of it even at such huge quantities I think this is most clearly demonstrated in both Sasori’s 100 puppet performance technique & his living core, which I would think is mostly logically the result of a type of macabre Fūinjutsu. As for Sasori’s grandfather I haven't named him or given him any type of personality in my HC but I do HC Chiyo possibly met him during the second war & had a relationship with him then. I believe this has always been kept a secret, whether or not Chiyo knew his origins.
A little bit on Sasori’s core: As stated this is quite literally Sasori. The cylinder seen in his chest is Sasori’s actual form & contains all of his consciousness & life force, making it generally sentient. It is able to move itself in a somewhat psychokinetic manner. Technically, Sasori’s core is able to “merger” with whatever organic material it comes in contact with, allowing Sasori’s spirit/lifeforce to possess it & Sasori does have consciousness & control over what his core targets. In theory, this could mean Sasori could posses a still living human, however the tendrils that protrude from the cylinder are short & are not designed for grappling with living things that might seek to reject its presence. This is also why Sasori’s shell bodies all have a special space carved out for the core to slide in nicely & take control.
The shells that hold Sasori’s physical likeness are really just that ━ shells, of which he has created numerous in his former image, as shown briefly during his battle with Chiyo & Sakura. Sasori’s original body, however, is the one he was shown fighting in & it only differs from his human puppets due to his own design, which is why Sasori considers himself his greatest masterpiece as he is the closest to a living puppet there ever has been in any way. Unlike his “human puppets” Sasori initially appears completely lifelike & with the exception of eating & breathing, behaves lifelike as well. He has even taken measures to camouflage any obvious joints that might be visible outside of his Akatsuki robes with a layer of what would be best described as a type of “skin” over top. This is why Sasori’s fingers, wrists & toes do not appear to have puppet like joints as his human puppets do & why his skin doesn’t take on that greyish “dead” appearance they do either.
In some places, however, it was shown Sasori hasn’t bothered to hide his joints or his obvious puppet parts as they are concealed by his cloak. This was also due to using his body as a battle puppet, fitted with deadly weapons & simplifying himself for repairs & additions. If he wanted however, he could have made his puppet body look exactly the same as his human body with absolutely no obvious joints & free of weapons entirely. The difference merely being the lack of a sign he is actually alive. ( Body heat, breath ect ) & since I like to use pieces of the game’s canon in my portrayal, I do imagine Sasori’s body had been in this more entirely “human looking” state once before, before he decided to alter himself to add weapons, to explain why there was no visible sign of him being a “puppet” when confronted by Konan to join the Akatsuki despite the fact that at that point he should have already been converted.
Sasori’s desire to collect puppets would very much go into the realms of compulsive hording if the Naruto world didn’t have that handy little thing called scrolls where you can just instantly & infinitely store items, + Sasori’s always forced to move around being a criminal & all so he never gets settled anywhere. As things are now, of course, Sasori’s “”collecting”” is dark in the sense that it combines a serial killer & trophy taking kind of angle which would slow down MOST normal people outside of Naruto’s world but since death & killing is almost considered a norm, Sasori is just as able to freely acquire mass amounts of human puppets the same way he would able to acquire Barbie dolls in our wold. The only things limiting his collecting is the hunt & the “materials” he can find & deem worthy.
Sasori can be very picky, he wont just convert ANY shinobi into a human puppet for his collection, he prefers strong shinobi with interesting jutsu so obviously that limits what he can collect for either unavailability or the challenge of having to kill that shinobi – though, nearly 300 puppets later, obviously killing them hasn’t been THAT MUCH of a challenge to Sasori. After proving himself the victor, Sasori feels himself entitled to collect that person. He would not find the “piece” as valuable or as desired if he couldn’t face & defeat them in battle, meaning Sasori almost never makes puppets out of anyone he hasn’t personally confronted & killed himself. Furthermore, Sasori does not consider this an evil, twisted act but rather quite the opposite. To Sasori this is a show of utmost honour & respect to them & their abilities. In his mind he’s immortalising them, so they will “live” forever, never broken or defeated again.
Regardless, he does sometimes “convert” shinobi who aren't strong. These are literally spare parts. As his puppets are “human” the only materials that aren't human are the weapons & mechanisms within them. To do that he needs human parts to work with as well . Sasori likes to keep his materials organic as much as possible.
I believe Sasori’s death was certainly linked to the amount of puppets he lost. His fight with Sakura & Chiyo essentially laid waste to his life’s work & Sasori’s puppets have always been more important to him than just pieces of art he's proud of. They're… A condition. The manifestation of a severely damaged psyche & trauma. They’re a coping mechanism. Since he was a child creating puppets was how he distracted himself from his sadness & loss & really existed to fill that void. I don’t think Sasori really took the loss of over 15 YEARS of tireless work, dedication & attachment as well as it seemed. I think it was…. Very hard for him to watch his favourite puppets completely destroyed & with most of his collection wrecked I believe he began to feel the only comfortable outcome for himself was to “die” with them & so when the opportunity presented itself Sasori simply allowed it, keeping in mind Sasori would have been the victor had he chose to be.
Puppets of course aren’t the only thing Sasori has in his collection. He also obviously collects poisons / toxins & the equipment to make all of these things, from the poisons to the puppets. He has a fascination for bugs & creepy crawlies so he has some preserved bug specimens as well + a little bug collection. Then being an artist he also tends to have various things for artistic mediums beside JUST making puppets. Another one of Sasori’s most important artistic mediums is drawing. He has a few sketch books, one in particular which is rather large & slightly tatty showing its age. These books are full of deigns for Sasori’s puppets, including their mechanisms & brief notes on how they will work & other things. He makes sure not to go too much in detail however as he prefers to keep his puppets secret weaponry just that.
He doesn’t create a puppet without a good design in mind, especially for how he can best utilise the puppet’s human traits. He often has to make special mechanisms to get a human puppets particular kekkei genkai working at the same level it would when that puppet was still alive. Sasori likes to have all this planned out before he begins working for convenience sake, he at least likes to have a rough map for what components he’ll need to access & utilise those special abilities, as often he can add other things later & usually does when he feels a spurt of inspiration or thinks he's had a good idea. Sasori’s artistic style is very hyper realistic, he likes to get everything as perfect & precise as possible which he's very capable of given his extensive anatomical knowledge. Sasori will also make designs of people who… Aren’t dead. Many of his fellow Akatsuki members he's already made design plans for with very detailed & descriptive images. This would probably be seen as threatening if discovered but Sasori doesn’t exactly see it that way. Its really just like drawing someone a portrait of themselves to him & as far as his fellow Akatsuki members go no, he doesn’t really plan to ‘act’ on making them into puppets for now, he's simply imagining what they'd be like as puppets.
Typically, Sasori will start “designing” someone he finds interesting as a puppet the moment he meets them & if he decides he likes them enough he will eventually start putting his designs to paper. Again this would be seen as frightening & threatening to most normal people really it should be taken as flattering or complimentary. To be designed in one of Sasori’s sketch books Is Sasori’s weird way of saying he likes you or he respects you / admires your power & thinks you deserve to be ‘eternal’.
Sasori & Chiyo had a rather serious fight prior to Komushi’s death. This was the product of Sasori confronting Chiyo about lying to him about his parents deaths for all those years & Chiyo defending this by claiming she wanted to spare him the pain & Sasori arguing against what he felt were hypocrisies. It went on like this, Chiyo defending the village’s ( and her own ) decisions. Sasori was already kind of suffering selective mutism at this point & this didn’t really help. The communication between them wasn’t very fruitful or satisfactory for either of them.
This resulted in Sasori opting to “move out” in a way as he decided to retreat to suna’s puppet workshop & stay there, avoiding his grandma as much as possible. This is why Komushi started acting as a messenger between him & Chiyo since the two were not speaking. This went on for a number of months, I would go as far as to say nearing a year, but Sasori’s mental state wasn't thought of as dire as it was due to the fact Sasori was though of as just naturally quiet & Chiyo herself noted Komushi was Sasori’s only real friend so his absolute withdrawal was not entirely thought of as unusual or noticed too much until too late.
I always found Chiyo recounting past events in ep 319 really strange since her & Sasori are shown to have this awkward standoffish relationship despite the fact we’re not shown any clear reason for it. We’re not sure why they seem to be avoiding each other otherwise but this is my explanation & to me looking at it this way it makes sense why Chiyo felt so responsible for Sasori’s collapse as she says she distanced himself from him when he needed love by allowing him to withdraw away & essentially encouraging it as she did the same. Her attempts to make peace with Sasori were there but since they weren't direct Sasori did not interpret them as such & he was already hurt & angry that she had lied to him all those years.
