             Physical Inquiries - Accepting
Pierrehas some of the worst fish lips you’ve ever seen. Even at rest, when not pulledinto a salesman’s smile, they stretch nearly to the same width as the cornersof his eyes. They’re never cracked, either for proper hydration or theconsistent taste of pig’s lard from their cooking. In fact, they almost shinewith that grease. They’re deep pink, like what one would expect from a healthytongue. He’s missing three teeth, though they’ve all been replaced with what hewas told was gold and what was in reality maybe silver, if he’s lucky.
Beatrice, by contrast, has well-proportioned, reasonably plump lips, butshe takes terrible care of them. The paint she uses dries them out horribly, sothey’re always chapped. She only has one and a half teeth knocked out, but she’snever bothered to replace them. Her front teeth stick out so badly she nearlyhas them properly bucked, but it only shows when she smiles.

BACK TO THE ROOTS - A NOTE ON CLAIRE'S VILLAGE VERSE.
( because it's long due and i finally somewhat found the words to make a cohesive thought )
CLAIRE A / canon.
despite not being affiliated with terrasave for a whole decade by now, the events of village put claire back on her old path - especially her detective skills have their moment to shine once again. but it doesn't happen so easily, of course.
at first claire was not supposed to be part of the mission, for some time earlier in the year rani's aunt had passed, and the adjustment leading to that was very complicated on her part ( because rani is a teenager getting ready to start college, and claire's experience with that started and ended pretty much in the span of a few months ) so when she's asked about her availability, she's very hesitant on accepting. eventually she gives in, because rani insists that nobody else could do the job better than her, and that she's got sherry who can help sort out the dorm and classes situation.
so claire travels to the village with the promise to keep in touch whenever she can to remain briefied on what her girls are up to. essentially claire helps mia with rosemary when ethan is training, makes sure that the house is safe during the day and checks all the locks twice before chris' squad takes over for the night.
what went wrong?
claire definitely noticed something was off in the prelude to the game events, thing is, she genuinely thought mia was being weird because of her ptsd or maybe ppd - there were some signs according to google and the few little moments claire would see her interact with ethan, so she never thought much of it besides drop hints that if mia needs someone to talk to, she's always around.
what really sets claire off is the bedtime story book. she's not an expert on what to read to babies by any means, but even for her standards it seems like something too dark. so after hearing bits and pieces claire actually reads the whole thing, and not only it creeps her out but also sets her curiousity very high when researching on it she finds out it's local folklore. her infamous board of clues makes a comeback the moment rose goes missing - her investigation diverts from the general action driven vibe, adding elements of mystery and supernatural ( that will eventually be explained with the existence of the mold, but up until then claire is just trying to find out what is making the villagers sick and if "mother miranda" might be connected to the kidnapping )
she remains in contact with chris and the rest of the squad for the whole time and her codename is sköll ( which in itself deserves a whole post about its implications in relation to mythology and what is happening in the village but that's for another time )
due to the heavy themes of parenthood, questionable mothers and love for a child, claire will mention sherry and rani and her experience of motherhood when it comes to them, as they are the closest thing to kids of her own that she's ever had.
CLAIRE B / alt verse.
everything stays the same in regards of claire's task and her role in the squad and throughout the events of village. the only difference is that in this instance there would be mentions of juniper / juni & micah, who would be claire's daughters that she's been raising since late 2014.
in this alt verse claire would still be involved in the daily tasks. because juni & micah are kids claire and leon ( shout out to deadaim ) the rules of canon and logic were bent a little, meaning that while they all moved to europe at some point after 2017, they mostly keep them in the newly rebuilt holigrad as students in buddy's school, far away as possible from the village. it's a few tough years and commuting is an annoyance but things could be worse all in all, and claire is grateful for the life she has.
juni & micah would be circa 8 and 7 around this time, and probably not suitable as host unlike rose - still, i think that if miranda had caught word of some of claire's conversations while posing as mia then she knows they could be another possibility, or at least some sort of leverage to see how willing claire is to fight for a good cause when it's her family on the line ( i think it would make for some good gray morality moments, so i'm always open to discuss this verse )

CLAIRE'S NEW YORK APARTMENT.
( because i've been setting a bunch of threads in there and never actually explained the logistics of it all )
so, as i mentioned in a previous post, claire doesn't live in her childhood house anymore but is relocated in brooklyn ( probably bed-stuy ) and her apartment is on the third floor of an historical building. at first the apartment is not owned but rented, mostly because as much as claire's job is noble it doesn't pay very well, so she can't afford the expense. this would be the layout:
Tumblr media
it's worth to note that all of claire's pieces of furniture are mostly vintage or second hand, she really just bought a new couch and beds to be sure it would stay good as time passes ( plus she's all about those orthopedic mattresses, you know the deal ). it makes for a cosy vibe, very lived also thanks to all the pictures of her loved ones that she has laying around.
in the living room there's a vinyl player along with her precious collection, and there's definitely a poster or two of queen - she's absolutely the type to hang these kind of stuff in the bathroom too, her interior designing situation is quirky. since due to her job claire can't take care of a pet the way she would like to, she's settled for plants; she started with a tiny cactus plant and somehow it took over the house, either way they don't need much water so unless she stays away for longer than intended, no plant has ever been harmed.
now we move to the guest room. if i said claire's house is very lived, it can't really be said for this room. it's not that she doesn't invite guests over ( we know she does ) it's just that this room had been furnished to have sherry in it when claire was still trying to get custody, so yeah. it's filled with stuff sherry likes, and in those moments where people snoop around they're always left wondering so where's the kid? is it their weekend off with dad? and you know how it is, it makes claire want to cry. every now and then rani would spend time in it, since claire and her aunt had an agreement that rani would stay with claire when mrs chawla was busy with her job / had to travel / whatever, so in a way the room has been influenced by her style as well, and it's that perfect reminder that claire has indeed two girls she looks after, in whatever way that may be.
finally the balcony. whoever stays over at claire's always ends up having a small therapy session in her balcony somehow, it just comes with the house. eventually she's furnished with a little table and two chairs, but even before that there was always an ashtray laying around.

claire is that one annoying friend who sends emails. she has a phone, went through the whole blackberry hype, probably bought a smartphone as soon as it was on the market. if she sends a text then you know she's been kidnapped

ana got me thinking about this earlier but claire has split feelings when it comes to raccoon city. leaving it behind felt bittersweet because she had been there several times since chris got the job - good memories are tied to the place despite the way she's last seen it. i will not sugarcoat it, on her way around the station she's probably met people she used to know or talked to at least once during her visits; she didn't have time to mourn them, didn't have a way to find out if their families were okay. she could just push forward and hope that it wouldn't happen the same thing to her.
mr x and william birkin still haunt her to this day - and it's not about what they looked like because there's always someone looking worse mutations wise; it's their intentions, their behaviour. you'll never catch her say it out loud but claire is absolutely terrified by the implications related to the G-virus, and that's a feeling she carries in her heart even now, because sure a specific outbreak never happened, but there are still people out there willing to experiment on and buy it, which means that she'll have to worry about sherry's safety until the day she dies.
that night in raccoon city gave claire so much trauma in terms of what she's seen and what she's had to do in order to survive. i think in a way she stopped being a kid the moment she hopped on that train to leave the city. her priorities changed, a lot of things from her life that seemed alright just the day before suddenly weren't for her anymore - and it's not like she hasn't tried her hardest to reintroduce herself into society after coming back from rockfort, but i think that at her core claire had to grow up in the span of a night, and then again, and by the time she's come back to college that life didn't make much sense anymore; not when she was attending trials every other month for sherry's custody or attempting to process her feelings by attending group meetings that would always end up being useless since the main topics would be types of grief that are somewhat regular, and then there she was talking about zombies. not believable.
she's gone to see the memorial once because terrasave begged her to for publicity, and even though the place is mostly a deserted land / hole in the ground she can almost point all the spots she's been during that night. but that's not a place claire would ever go again on her own will. raccoon city gave claire a lot in terms of family of choice ( canonically barry, jill then of course sherry and leon ) but it stole everything else about her life and identity for a long time, and that's something she can't really shake away.

following the last post, though we have seen many times that claire basically keeps terrasave running, her position in the organisation has changed throughout the years:
she technically first heard of them a few months after being founded in 1999, though she actually joined in 2000 as a volunteer. they funded her studies in exchange for her story being used in interviews and fundraisings events
her first mission was in early 2004 in valdelobos, though it was a waste of time since they had arrived too late and never figured out what was happening with the civilians or the kids that disappeared. their collaboration with the local law enforcement was a mess too
in 2005 claire was already sort of testing waters about that spokesperson position though the airport outbreak definitely made it difficult to deal with the press about the protests happening in harvardville. inmy humble opinion even though the narrative being pushed is that claire chose a peaceful path, the way she dealt with the survivors shows that she's the only one of the mains who can be both fighter and rescuer if she wants
in 2006 she was coordinating the relief in penamstan, which is definitely a higher position but still falls in the volunteer zone. she's entrusted with talking to senators about collaborations between terrasave and the government, so i think in a way she was already getting ready to step up in position
2009 is the earliest we know of neil's involvement as leader of terrasave even though it's implied he joined sometime in 2005 after FBC was shut down, and climbed up in attempt to secretly continue lansdale's legacy. i find ot interesting that he was voted leader because of his sharp insight about bioterrorism but like, sure on paper he seems to align to the other "leaders" / founders ( chris and leon specifically ) views, but then that's it. neil gets votes but then in 2010 claire is the one organising the meeting between terrasave, bsaa and dso to which as far as we know she was also present, and in 2011 he had to pull her aside during the party to ask if she knew anything from DC. he's the leader on paper but he sure isn't leading shit if the people he's in alliance with don't even bother to talk to him specifically. i won't dwell on claire lying through her teeth about not being aware that there's a whole conspiracy since 2006 simply because that belongs to another meta but i do think at some point she was officially appointed spokesperson because 1) her connections are useful... and people prefer to talk to her better apparently, 2) neil doesn't have the personality to speak to people. it's noted he's a calm man but also detached by bioterrorism as a whole, things are just another tuesday for him ( negative ) so claire's more sensible approach is way useful when talking to the press
she's kept the spokesperson / second in command position up until sejm and her consequent resignation or break, whatever you want to call it. while i have my doubts that claire would come back knowing that even the organisation she's been in for most of her life is corrupt in some degree, i believe claire's plan was to teach moira the way so that at the next election they would have become the leader / second in command duo
death island will probably show claire as a volunteer once again because capflop hates having cool women in position of power, but in the off chance they don't tell us more about what happened post sejm, this is how things will go: from 2011 to 2013 claire was unaffiliated from terrasave, and mostly spent her time tracing back all the steps of neil and alex's plans in order to clear terrasave's name ( not that they asked, but since she really wants that leader position some leverage is needed ). benford's presidential speech at tall oaks was supposed to start a new era though as we know it was the opposite. claire helped terrasave volunteers in the aftermath of the outbreak even though there wasn't much left by the end of it. she's elected leader in 2014, with the assignment to sonido de tortuga being her first since working with the ngo again. it's worth to note that with claire being the leader, collaborations with the bsaa are more frequent; claire also reports to chris in these cases as if she was another agent, because technically she is. since it seems that the events of death island will be game changer to the point it needs the whole squad, in 2015 she will be in san francisco / alcatraz to conduct a joint investigation with the bsaa

alright she's here and looks okay-ish, i guess 👀
Tumblr media
as previously mentioned claire lives in brooklyn. the outside of her home ( a repurposed carriage house claire's been paying mortgage on since she was 20, back in the 90s it was basically trashed and she's been fixing it since ) would look something similar to this. yes the red is on purpose.
security cameras are hidden in all corners of the front mostly because with her face being all over the news every other day claire doesn't have much trust in bad guys leaving her alone... and also to check on the kids whenever she's not around ( teenagers being teenagers and all, you know the deal )
Tumblr media
the guest room in the garden floor ( with direct access to the patio ) was supposed to be sherry's room once the judge would grant claire her custody, though as we know that never happened. throughout the years the room has been influenced by sherry, rani and maleek's style as they have all lived there at different stages of their lives.
the most claire spends her time is obviously the parlor floor, which basically acts as her little apartment in her own home since there's her room, kitchen and living room all on the same floor. in the niche between staircase and living room there's a floor to ceiling library with all her books and vinyls stored. fun fact - this floor of the house was featured in vogue living around the time claire was working on benford's presidential campaign ( the kids' room was kept out of the video for security reasons )
the roof top is where most of the reunions with the other survivors happen - if the weather is good it won't be unusual to see the squad eat there or stargaze when the sky is clear. according to claire taking her dates to see the skyline from her rooftop sets THE romantic tone so if your muse is dating / has dated her, they definitely had a cosy make out session there

jokes aside, officially claire's position at terrasave is spokesperson, so even though she doesn't get the corporate kind of salary, it's still an okay-ish pay ( the average is apparently $80,000 ). her main side hustle is freelance writing for various newspapers and magazines of her choosing ( usually the ones that align with her political views ) so that's another $3,000 or so in a year. after sejm and her resignation from her ts position, she was offered a deal to write a book about what happened in raccoon city but as of now she hasn't accepted it yet - banking on people's tragedies has never been her style, even if the story belongs to her as well.

serious talk though, i think in a way there is an expectation when it comes to claire. pretending that it's not because capcom doesn't care to show us that side of the story, claire never talks about raccoon city or the other outbreaks for that matter. that night changed the trajectory of her life ( only 19yo !! ) forever and she never mentions how it affects her. we can see it through the path she chose though - claire's coping mechanism is rooted in toxicity just as much as her male counterparts simply because she refuses to see the bad, she pushes through her own hurt and shoves it aside so that she can focus on others. her needs are never met, and no matter what peaceful route she might take it always ends up in the most horrific outcome either by hers or someone else's hand.
the only time we see her express her true emotions about something outbreak related is in the scene of the medical tent in degeneration - but even then claire is quick to blame herself for every single thing wrong with the world, hasn't done enough etc. then as soon as leon mentions how she's basically this angel who chose a peaceful path instead of violence blah blah blah, claire bolts up and remembers that she cant dwell too much in her pain because she's expected to be a beacon of light. even infinite darkness ends up in some way painting her as such - not only in the main poster she's bathed in light but it's also highlighted throughout the scenes by her flashlight literally shining over the darkness of the abandoned house full of secrets that would make the government collapse if exposed.
i think i mentioned this before but claire at the end of everything is really the epitome of a light that never goes out / but from time to time i flicker. except that nobody is ever there to see it because one way or another she's not allowed to show that she's just a mess as everybody else - there's always someone to take care of, someone who needs more attention than her and that's where her focus has to go. we know she drowns herself in work to the point she makes it clear she has no time to give to relationships ( yeah it was a joke and all that but if you look at her history claire is essentially alone and lonely ) of any kind unless it's work related. which is really sad if you think about it because she's supposedly this beacon of light and hope for a kinder world and whatnot but even the people close to her fail to notice how much effort it takes to push the darkness some place where it doesn't become an inconvenience.

a rundown of claire's kids, somewhat canonically, sometimes assumed / implied:
• sherry. this one is obvious, claire bonded with her in an instant that night in raccoon city and became claire's responsibility the same way she was to chris when their parents died. their bond is different because claire and sherry are not actually age to be mother and daughter, but it doesn't mean claire is not there filling the role anyway - always mindful to not step on anyone's shoes, sherry's got a bio mom who cared about her for better or worse and her presence doesn't erase that. claire fought tooth and nail to get her custody before simmons revoked her visit rights, and it was all for nothing since there would always be an excuse for which they'd find her unfit to be a legal guardian. the family claire, sherry ( and leon ) have created is not conventional, some could use a wrong acceptation and say they're trauma bonded - but the point is that claire made a promise to take of sherry and that's what she intends to do for the rest of her life.
• rani. i headcanon that she was around 5 when claire first met her. in a way her family situation reminds claire of her own - parents dead and her aunt took her in, just like it happened to claire with the burtons when chris was in the air force then stars. throughout the years after degeneration rani's aunt would drop her in new york during assignments where claire wasn't needed - they'd actually worked a schedule to make sure that rani would always stay with either one or the other. rani also spends most of the weekends over at claire's apartment, not that she minds giving aunt chawla some time for herself anyway. in canon timeline rani would currently be 21 and studying at NYU. her aunt died some time in early 2017 ( aged 60, unknown if it was on the field or natural causes ) and since then lives full time at claire's apartment.
• maalek. ( this one is tricky bc capflop didn't tell us shit, but who cares ) claire met him during her volunteering work in penamstan, his drawings catching her attention and quite literally starting all the chain of events that lead to her finding out about the outbreak. when we first see him, he's on a wheelchair and is declared mute by one of the volunteers even though he actually tries to speak a few words to claire, albeit unsuccessfully. i think claire spent a lot of time in penamstan after the events of infinite darkness, at least a few couple years since as we know of she's seen bsck in DC again only in 2010. claire made sure maleek would go to therapy both physical and for his mental health - taught him asl so that they could communicate with each other though she got him one of those blackboards that can be erased too. he was around 10 in 2006, which would make him 25 in current timeline. he's now comfortable walking with a cane, but still mostly communicate through asl. no need to mention he's one hell of a good painter.
• marilou. she gets an honor mention because claire met her back when she used to give ted talks in schools and they've kept in touch since then. obviously as we know marilou had a life already planned and it got crushed unfortunately, but it remains that she was still pretty young ( compared to claire at least ). though it's not outright specified, it's implied that claire took marilou under her wing after what happened in sonido de tortuga as is helping with the expenses for her college classes through a program with terrasave.

claire's handwriting has changed a lot through the years, it used to be bigger and with the stereotypical vaguely heart shaped dot on the i - she was 19 okay, nobody is perfect - but after filing enough reports with terrasave this has become her final signature

claire has always been very prone to get herself into trouble and that's a known fact, sometimes her shenanigans have led to getting hurt:
- as a preteen / teen she got a few scrapes on her knees and elbows from learning to skate, nothing serious but if you look close there are thin faded lines where her scars used to be
- a more prominent scar, still visible even in current times, is the one she got while riding her bike for the first time. being lanky and thin, the whole thing fell on the side of her leg. her college roommate helped at the time, though claire never disclosed the information to chris in order to avoid an earful about her hobby being too dangerous
- rc and rockfort left more mental scars than physical, as we know they're still unhealed to these days ( but this is for another post ) she definitely left the island with many bruises, especially on her neck where she was grabbed
- in harvardville she got hurt when a shard of glass hit her leg during the control room explosion. while there wasn't a huge damage, claire lost quite a bit of blood and limped for a while
- in washington a control room was her doom once again, though this time she broke her arm. her bones still hurt to this day if she holding something heavy, because she's stubborn and ditched her sling as soon as she was back home so it never healed properly
- in sejm island the biggest injury claire got was when she jumped off the cliff. collision with water gave her a concussion and had to be in the icu for a while after being rescued. she's got permanent migraines even after recovering, though to be fair she's always been prone to suffer from them, they just got worse
- in sonido de tortuga not only she was thrown around and against walls to the point that she broke some of her ribs ( had to be carried to the helicopter and could barely hold the grenade launcher ) but also zǐlì pretended to want to shot claire just to change trajectory at the last minute. thing is, claire was being held at gunpoint the whole time, so her ear suffered from the loud noise
obviously there are also other unknown injuries that come with her line of work, they all fall in the general bruises and scratches she would get throughout the gameplay and usually gets "instantly cured" with medikits and herbs.

TRUE ENDING, DARK ENDING, NEW BEGINNINGS - A STUDY IN CLAIRE AND LEON.
( because if there's one thing capflop can't do is treat women right. disclaimer: this might not be pleasant, please keep in my mind it's in relation to my portrayal and not THE truth )
let's skip all the obvious parts, we already know those. let's dive into claire's mind since by the time death island happens she considers leon her comrade in arms, even though perhaps with the way things go in canon she should be the one throwing the chair. only half joking here.
i'm gonna start by saying that i find ridiculous that claire would fuck off a few days after the outbreak - sure she's impulsive but not at these levels to go in with no plan and no actual idea of where to fly in the first place. so here's the thing, she's stayed with sherry and leon for a while before leaving, planned her search carefully with them watching her too. bonding more with sherry was a given, but she obviously shared enough pieces of information with leon as well since she knows his email.
i don't think claire ever fell head over heels for him as some in this fandom love to imply - she has eyes, and leon is easy on them. that's really all there is to see ( tho i do think her feelings might have changed slightly during their motel hopping situation, but that's more of me world building around the little that we know ) at the same time however, leaving and returning has been a disastrous experience for claire. she was definitely the first to reach out to him post rockfort - mostly to find out what happened to sherry.
on that note, i think that was what held them together at first. it is known that they had visit rights, probably showed up together sometimes, might have decided to join forces against simmons ( although it was useless ) when claire was trying to get sherry's custody. they both love sherry, they both went through hell, they both want to end it - their whole friendship is based on a promise they made to each other when they were a little more thank kids themselves. and that's probably why claire has ended up having a closer bond with leon post raccoon city; they share similarities in that way, and that's what gets them through things since apparently they keep in touch off screen ( would be fun to read more of their email exchanges )
it's obvious claire holds leon on a pedestal in a way - whereas chris was her go to person, leon sort of takes that place post rockfort. he gets contacted in harvardville, she asks his opinion about the drawing made by that kid in penamstan. she cares about him and his opinion, which is somewhat reciprocated through the little hints in canon, but at the same time we see a shift that changes things. if during the airport outbreak leon was speaking highly of claire and how she fought her way out of raccoon city, a couple years later in DC he tells her to "not do anything stupid" more than once, to which claire eventually even tells him "when are you going to stop treating me like a kid?" because claire knows very well she's capable and experienced, so her inner question when it comes to leon is why cant you see me as your equal?
i know some might have expected me to turn this into a ship moment, but it really all boils down to this. claire gets the damsel treatment over and over, to the point that even something that supposedly was fanservice becomes a moment where we can see her annoyance. she seems almost mad when leon asks her if she's fine after being picked up from the acid pool - and while she is okay, there's no doubt that leon and jason's antics have created problems during her convo with wilson, claire still gets up and goes to the control room to once again to the behind the scene work that will grant leon another tyrant kill and a pat on his shoulder by the government.
to put it simply, claire never gets praised, never gets credit, and yet she's the one doing half the work, she's the one staying behind during the aftermath, she's the one who made it possible for the government and bsaa to meet in the first place. claire might as well get into politics some day and i wouldn't be surprised, she's a leader who always gets pushed aside because she's unfortunately surrounded by a lot of toxic masculinity and very fragile egos.
so to circle back, i find it interesting that claire says "i do things my way and you do things yours" because it implies that until then they were always meeting in the middle, but it was really following leon's lead because he's supposed to know better than her. it could be implied that claire has compromised for the past decade, having a different approach to fighting the good fight than him ( leading me to think she had been influenced by neil's charm for a whole lot longer than revelations 2, he just wasn't the leader of terrasave yet so his role wasn't important for the plot but possibly formative to how claire operates ) so this is her stepping away from leon's shadow - it's her way to say ok, i've been following your lead until now, but just because you're the fighter and i'm the rescuer it doesn't mean we're not on the same level.
i also find very interesting that claire and leon seem to not have a "shared campaign" and that she has been given a weapon of her own in death island. it might not mean much in terms of plot meaning, but to me it means a lot because it's already a HUGE step forward ( until now movie wise she would always have a weapon that was either leon's or would be discarded after shooting one zombie which is ridiculous when there's a hoard of them ) toward claire having an identity of her own that is not tied to her brother, best friend, boyfriend of the day found dead at the end. this might be her biggest occasion to shine and perhaps to prove once again that she's on the same level as everybody else - her job doesn't define, her experience does... and of that let me tell you at this point she's got plenty.
to recap: claire did carry the torch for leon throughout the years and as long as the universe keeps destroying every attempt of her moving on, in a way she will always have a soft spot for him. but also if it's true that the distance makes the heart grow fonder, then the farther they stay when it comes to missios the more they'll remain in best terms ( he's still her best friend regardless, is a deal package along with sherry, she will totally host interventions but will never let people use her name to express their disappointment )
