Finally got my hands on the exact copy of a book I’ve wanted since I was a teenager, something about this cover always really struck me. This book the account of General Tom Barry, an Óglaigh na hÉireann guerrilla fighter from Cork, Ireland, an area at the time known to many as “Bandit Country”. This book along with Dan Breen’s “My Fight For Irish Freedom” remain some of the most seminal first hand accounts of the Irish Revolution.

DO MHUINTIR NA hÉIREANN.
A FHEARA AGUS A MHNÁ NA hÉIREANN: in ainm Dé agus in ainm na nglún a chuaigh romhainn agus óna bhfuair sí a seanoideas mar náisiún, tá Éire, trínne, ag gairm a clainne faoina bratach agus ag bualadh buille ar son a saoirse.
Tar éis di eagar agus oiliúint a chur ar a cuid fear trí mheán a heagraíochta réabhlóidí rúnda, Bráithreachas Poblachtach na hÉireann, agus trí mheán a heagraíochtaí míleata oscailte, Óglaigh na hÉireann agus Arm Cathartha na hÉireann, tar éis di a féinsmacht a fhoirbhiú go foighneach, tar éis di fanacht go seasmhach le teacht an lae chirt, beireann sí anois ar an bhfaill agus, le cabhair óna clann atá ar imirce uaithi i Meiriceá agus ó chomhghuaillithe calma san Eoraip, ach ag brath sa chéad áit ar a neart féin, buaileann sí agus lán-dóchas aici go mbainfidh sí an bua.
Dearbhaímid gur ceart ceannasach dochloíte é ceart mhuintir na hÉireann chun seilbh na hÉireann agus chun dála na hÉireann a stiúradh gan srian. Níor chealaigh an forlámhas a d'imir cine agus rialtas eachtrannach ar feadh i bhfad an ceart sin, ná ní féidir é a chealú go deo ach amháin trí dhíothú mhuintir na hÉireann. I ngach glún dhearbhaigh muintir na hÉireann a gceart chun saoirse agus flaitheas an náisiúin: sé huaire le trí chéad bliain anuas dhearbhaíodar é faoi arm. Ag seasamh dúinn ar an gceart bunúsach sin agus á dhearbhú arís faoi arm os comhair an tsaoil, fógraímid leis seo Poblacht na hÉireann mar Stát Ceannasach Neamhspleách, agus cuirimid ár n-anam féin agus anam ár gcomrádaithe comhraic i ngeall lena saoirse agus lena leas agus lena móradh i measc na náisiún.
Tá ceart ag Poblacht na hÉireann ar dhílseacht fhir agus mhná na hÉireann agus éilíonn sí an dílseacht sin. Ráthaíonn an Phoblacht saoirse chreidimh agus saoirse shibhialta, cearta cothroma agus deiseanna cothroma don uile shaoránach, agus fógraíonn sí gur rún di sonas agus séan an náisiúin go hiomlán agus an uile pháirt di a bhaint amach agus í chomh ceanúil céanna ar chlann uile an náisiúin agus gan beann aici ar na difríochtaí a chothaigh rialtas eachtrannach go cúramach agus a dheighil mionlach ón móramh san am atá thart.
Nó go mbaine ár n-airm uain chaoithiúil amach le haghaidh bunú Rialtais Náisiúnta bhuain a bheidh ionadaíoch de mhuintir uile na hÉireann agus a thoghfar le vótaí a cuid fear agus ban uile, riarfaidh an Rialtas Sealadach a bhunaítear leis seo gnóthaí sibhialta agus míleata na Poblachta ar iontaobhas don phobal.
Cuirimid cúis Phoblacht na hÉireann faoi choimirce Dhia Mór na nUilechumhacht agus impímid a bheannacht ar ár n-airm, agus guímid nach dtarraingeoidh aon duine i seirbhís na cúise sin easonóir uirthi le meatacht, le mídhaonnacht ná le slad. In uair seo na cinniúna, ní foláir do náisiún na hÉireann, trína misneach agus a dea-iompar, agus trí thoil a clainne iad féin a íobairt ar son leas an phobail, go dtuillfidh sí an réim ró-uasal is dán di.

Nothing against your JJ appreciation post. However, as a History teacher I need to point something out.
After the Civil War was done, the United States government placed a ban preventing deaf and disabled individuals from joining the military for any future wars.
Then World War I happened. Nearly every able-bodied man was enlisted to fight, leaving the deaf behind. World War II was the same situation.
However, this didn’t stop the deaf citizens from serving their country; they took up work in the factories, manufacturing weapons, equipment, and supplies and then shipping them to the front lines.
So unfortunately, No. Not even the Irish Military (Óglaigh na hÉireann) allow Deaf people to serve. They saw no combat and were never trained to fight or in any danger. The answer is the same even if you want to say he is only Mute.
The military doesn't allow people with communicative disabilities join as it's a safety risk to the entire team if they fall into a combat situation with someone who can not give or receive information without being seen.
He has never been in combat for any Government and he never will be. A private Organization like WTCHR may have recruited him for experimentation but it would be private and nothing official.
I did legitimately think about that, but I couldn’t find any concrete info on what disabilities made you unable to serve or not. Jameson isn’t deaf (as far as we know) he appears to just be mute, and for the life of me I couldn’t find any information on that when I went looking.
I do appreciate your input tho! I honestly think that the 1920’s aesthetic might just be a stylistic choice on Seán’s part and he wasn’t actually alive during that time, but who knows!
Even if he didn’t serve in the war, the man could still probably deck Anti and I would be 100% down to watch it happen lmao.

Minister for Defence confirms that Irish Defence Forces no longer have "gun salute to the Most Blessed Sacrament"
Minister for Defence confirms that Irish Defence Forces no longer have “gun salute to the Most Blessed Sacrament”
As the United Kingdom was mourning the passing of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and many gun salutes were being fired to mark this occasion, I found myself wondering what the Irish Defence Forces did with regard to gun salutes. I looked online and found that in addition to the normal gun saltutes of 21 rounds for visiting Heads of State, military funerals and the like, the Defence…

“L’armée d’Eire a été pourvue d’un nouvel uniforme. Le soldat irlandais que nous voyons à gauche porte le nouvel uniforme à tunique à col ouvert avec casque d'acier d'un modèle à peu près semblable à celui de l’armée britannique. On remarquera que dans l'ancien uniforme, le casque était de même modèle que-celui de l'armée allemande.”  - from L’Illustration Nouvelle. June 26, 1940. Page 13.

NATIONAL MEMORIAL TO MEMBERS OF THE IRISH DEFENCE FORCES [MERRION SQUARE PARK]-163055 by William Murphy Via Flickr: An Dún Cuimhneacháin - National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces Who Have Died in Service (2008) By Brian King Commissioned by the Department of Defence Ireland’s National Memorial depicts members of the four component parts of Óglaigh na hÉireann (Defence Forces Ireland): the Army, Navy, Air Corps and Reserve. Each are represented in the form of a bronze figure standing guard over an eternal flame emanating from the Defence Forces Badge at the centre of the structure. The Memorial, named An Dún Cuimhneacháin, is pyramid shaped made primarily of granite slabs resting on a steel frame with glass panels. It serves as a permanent memorial in recognition of the contribution and sacrifice made by members of the Defence Forces whether on home soil or on peace support operations overseas. Designed and created by artist Brian King who won the international competition which was held to choose an artist to design the memorial. King was born in Dublin in 1942, and studied at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, where he lectured for a number of years and served as the head of the Department of Sculpture from 1984 to 2004. In 1969 and 1983 he represented Ireland at the Paris Biennale, on the former occasion becoming the first Irish artist to win the major individual prize. His public commissions are typically large-scale metal sculptures in an abstract, minimalist style, based on simple geometric forms. His work is held in many public collections including The Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin; Crawford Municipal Gallery, Cork and University College, Dublin.
