Exactly 50 years ago today, on January 22, 1973, legendary journalist Walter Cronkite broke the news that former President Lyndon B. Johnson had just died in Texas at the age of 64. LBJ had suffered a massive heart attack at his LBJ Ranch in the Texas Hill Country outside of Austin, was rushed to the ranch’s private airstrip so that he could be flown to San Antonio’s Brooke Army Medical Center for treatment, but died in the airplane en route to San Antonio.
Cronkite delivered the news live on-the-air on CBS, interrupting a recorded news broadcast and reporting in real-time as he was literally receiving the information during a telephone call with longtime LBJ aide Tom Johnson (who was unrelated to LBJ and later became president of CNN).
LBJ’s death occurred in the midst of a massive week of news. Johnson’s death on January 22, 1973, took place the very same day that the Supreme Court delivered its Roe v. Wade decision, protecting a women’s right to have an abortion. Two days earlier, President Richard Nixon had been inaugurated for his second term. And, on the day after LBJ’s death, American and North Vietnamese negotiators in Paris reached an agreement to finally bring an end to U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War -- the war that had plagued so much of President Johnson’s Administration and overshadowed his immense domestic policy achievements, which included more significant progress on civil rights than any other President in history with the possible exception of Abraham Lincoln.

people place a high “value” on moon rocks
but we still need to find the sacred treasure of the heart
(moon’s Creator)
@LBJLibrary
For #NationalMoonDay 🌑, we're sharing the moon rock we have on display at the #LBJLibrary, which was collected during the #Apollo15 mission in '71.
This rock symbolizes one of #LBJ's goals as a founder of the U.S. space program: to send an astronaut safely to the #Moon & back.
7.20.23 • 12:55pm • Twitter
even if people have wanted to hear me speak, yet i had to be silent as the moon, as a book in the hands for someone to read and be open to share (the inner space) of the thought-life with me
calling out in the silence held on each page
i had to risk my heart as a “seed” in someone else’s hands
(i will be still in this)
in the writing and in the (Waiting)
in the engagement of a clear “unveiling” of heart, mind & body
for someone to be content to wait to hear me speak until seeing face-to-face, yet will still be open to read and write in thought with me beforehand to begin a conversation, and to speak of it as well to “mirror” what is truly inside
i have to seek like this from where i am
(an act of writing will find someone to be befriended)
the pure hope of this has never faded away… it has never slipped my heart & mind

I found myself drinking out of this mug today (from the LBJ library in Austin, TX) — I sort of felt like the presidential seal that had worn off in the dishwasher was apocalyptically appropriate to the pandemic atmosphere 😂😜! Austin 11/03/2019
Today I did a lot of walking. First I walked to the LBJ Library, which I didn’t enter because I didn’t want to pay.
Then I walked to the Bullock Texas State History Museum. Here, I learned a lot about the history of Texas, very interesting. You can easily spend over 2 hours at the museum if you like. They also had free wifi and a cafeteria, perfect for a small break after such a long tour.
Tumblr media
I continued my walk towards Littlefield Fountain and the UT Tower (University of Texas).
Tumblr media
By then it was late afternoon and my hunger was perfectly timed. I had linner (late lunch, early dinner) at Kerbey Lane Cafe, the students cafe close to campus that offers good food for a fair price.
An Uber took me to Mount Bonnell, a small mountain/ hill west of downtown. It gives a beautiful view over the river. Sports shoes are recommended but don’t expect a serious hike. It’s supposed to be a nice spot to watch the sun go down, unfortunately the weather was very grey and foggy so that didn’t work out. Next to the view over the river, the view of the riversides made me dream. Both sides were filled with big beautiful mansions with pools and their own personal piers and boats. If only I had been a nanny for one of those families...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah well, moving on. As I walk down the hill in order to make my Uber ride back to the motel cheaper, I pass by Mayfield - Gutsch House and Gardens. A pretty, small garden with some peacocks. By the time I found out there were small hiking tours next to the property, it was already getting dark so I called an Uber to get back to my motel.
Tumblr media
In the evening I went to “the Vortex” down the street. It’s cose place that offers a garden/ terrace with an Italian foodtruck, a cafe, theatre and live performance. I had a drink, listened to some live jazz and got to pet one of the cats. It’s so strange, but whenever someone asks me if I am homesick, I have to admit I miss my cats most of all. Nothing beats hugging your pets..

“I don’t speak very often, nor very long. My doctor admonished me not to speak at all this morning, but I’m going to do that because I have some things I want to say to you.”
An ailing former President Lyndon B. Johnson speaks at the Civil Rights Symposium at the @lbjlibrary in Austin, Texas, on December 12, 1972. Lady Bird Johnson later noted that the former President was suffering from a bad attack of angina that day, but was determined to attend the conference and speak about what he felt was his life’s legacy – civil rights for all. But, as we know today, LBJ knew that day that our work on civil rights was not finished: “We know how much still remains to be done, and if our efforts continue, and if our will is strong, and if our hearts are right, and if courage remains our constant companion, then, my fellow Americans, I am confident we shall overcome.”
This was also a farewell of sorts for Lyndon Johnson. He was in his element and at his beloved LBJ Library, but he was struggling. It is actually a little difficult to watch an obviously weakened LBJ, who had to take nitroglycerine pills to get through the speech (if you watch closely about six minutes into the video above, you can actually see LBJ reach into his pocket for a pill and quickly pop it into his mouth), catching his breath after every sentence. It’s hard to believe that Lyndon Johnson was younger when he gave this speech than George H.W. Bush was when he was inaugurated as President. Or that Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Donald Trump are twelve years older right now than LBJ was that day.
It was Lyndon Johnson’s final speech. Two weeks later, Harry Truman died and Lyndon Johnson once again defied doctors orders and flew to pay his respects as Truman’s casket lied in repose at the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri. Less than two months after the speech, thousands of visitors were paying their respects to LBJ’s casket as he lied in repose in the Great Hall of the LBJ Library

Michael Beschloss@BeschlossDC·
LBJ tonight 1968: “I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President”
This was the happiest night of my life, politically speaking. It would only be eclipsed five years or so later when Nixon resigned.
The Vietnam War brought them both down. You’d think people would learn that ware are a losing proposition, but no...
Oh, and bring back the draft. Put everyone’s skin in the game.
