“We can always tell!” Yeah,right...

One of the common tactics of transphobes is to say that “they can always tell”, meaning they will always recognize a transgender woman if they see one.

The underpinning message is, of course, that trans women do not pass as cis women and are therefore not real women. Because that is how transphobes see women.  Since gender identity is reduced to biology, all women have to pass as whatever it is these transphobes think of as “feminine”. And that might vary.

Think about this for a minute:

If they see a transgender woman who do not “pass”, she is taken as proof of the effectiveness of their transgender detecting radar or “transdar”.

If they see a cisgender woman who do not live up to their standards, she is classified as transgender, and – unless they actually bother to ask her – this classification will be seen as a confirmation of their capabilities.

If they meet a transgender woman who do “pass”, let’s say in a bathroom, she will be classified as a cis woman, again “proving” their amazing ability to cread trans women.

TERFs and far right women have shared restrooms with trans women over and over again without knowing it, without being attacked and without having their prejudices challenged. They have clocked them as cis.

On the other hand: Masculine presenting cis women  have been thrown out of women’s restrooms for being seen as trans women. Even if the woman tells them she is cis, they will not believe her, because of....their transdar! And yes, some cis men are seen as trans men (video below).

Finland’s prime minister apologizes for “inappropriate” picture of women kissing at her home

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin is apologizing after a picture of two women who were topless and kissing at a party held at her house in July was posted online. “In my opinion, the picture is not appropriate. I apologize for it,” Marin said. “That kind of a picture should not have been taken but otherwise, nothing extraordinary happened at the get-together.” Last week, Marin, who is with the Social Democratic Party, faced criticism after a video of the 36-year-old world leader drinking and dancing leaked online. She said that she was “upset” that the video was leaked, even though she knew she was being filmed at the time. “I spent the evening with my friends, partied, even in a rowdy way, danced and sang,” she said. “I myself have not used drugs, nor anything other than alcohol. Nor have I been in such a situation that I would have seen or known others [using drugs]. I was dancing, singing, partying… hugging my friends, doing totally legal things.” Other politicians in Finland criticized her, including Center Party Member of Parliament Mikko Kärnä, who demanded Marin take a drug test. “The people are entitled to expect this from their prime minister,” he said. Marin passed a drug test. Now pictures and videos from a separate event are being shared online. Marin said that she invited some people over to her residence on July 8, after a music festival. They spent the evening in the sauna. “Otherwise nothing extraordinary happened,” she said. A month later, Finnish TikTok influencer Sabina Särkkä posted a picture from the event of her kissing another woman while both of them lifted their tops up. The word “Finland” covered their breasts. Not only did Marin apologize, but Särkkä did too, saying that she didn’t mean to cause “further embarrassment” for the prime minister. I’m posting this because it needs to be signal boosted so that maybe something can be done to stop this - Texas GOP is trying to push the bill that would make supporting your trans child’s gender confirmation into an offense to allow the state take your children’s away from you. This vile shit would allow transphobes punish all the parents who openly disagree with their bigoted rhetorics by punishing and traumatizing their children for life and also intimidate  everyone else into “falling in line” and denying their trans children support they need. They want to punish people for loving their children more than fearing the State.

I don’t have an answer how to fight this, the only options I can see are to donate to Transgender Law Center and ACLU, two groups most likely to challenge this bill through legal means, which will need all resources they can get to fight GOP and their big-money backers.
