you. grabs you. popular/staple dishes and/or cuisines in Soul-Bound. how do these vary by region? what about culture? what about class/status -- is there a difference? what is considered a delicacy or luxury food item?

Okay! So,,, to start: the current timeline of Soul-Bound is a lot like that of our modern-times, but with magical elements added in. That means you see a lot of the same foods and meals that we do in our own world and countries (ex: Vesper is technically Welsh, on his mother's side, so he enjoys those kinds of dishes).

The cultural system is similar, with minor differences in how society treats itself more than the foods they eat. I'd say that this concept is common with most of the works Kara and I make, since we'd prefer writing societies where social concepts like queerness doesn't really get mistreatment and confusion, it's just a staple of life and thus does not matter to the environment as a whole. Being a shapeshifter and being trans is like. Basic. There's no hate against whether you like the same gender or something else, gender is a loose concept anyways, you get the idea.

Tangent aside, random foods from pizza, ramen, beef wellington, pasta, to salsa and chips, brownies and cake-- all these things still exist and are still made regularly, but! The biodiversity is what has changed. The ingredients are more diverse. There are plants and animals that may have gone extinct or don't exist in reality, that still exist in Soul-Bound.

So while the recipes and foods conceptually are very similar to the foods here per region, what goes into them may change more so than their general makeup. For instance, a meatloaf, but one of the meats is ground griffon meat compared to simply beef may occur due to a population of said creatures nearby.

(I only recently got into Dungeon Meshi, but I'd say that what ingredients are used in that series are very comparable to Soul-Bound. Things like regular iceberg lettuce exist and can be used towards food, but you could also say, use mandrakes to make up your salad too. As Kara puts it, "You make a familiar recipe with unfamiliar ingredients.")

As for what cuisines are considered delicacies versus normal, that absolutely matters on your species. I'd say humans are the most adventurous in terms of eating odd foods, but demons will eat anything yet absolutely adore things that have an insane level of magical potential in their makeup (souls, being the most obvious thing here, but eating the spells from a grimoire is equally something appetizing for them).

Cannibalism is also, a thing too in terms of like, not everyone has the response humans do to eating their own kind. Some are like snakes and don't think twice about eating other snakes, a demon sure doesn't care about eating other demons. Mers will eat fish despite being half fish. It's also abhorrent to do this with some species and totally fine to others, even varying on the individual level.

Eating another intelligent species sometimes doesn't matter; though it can become dangerous depending on the properties. Something can still be toxic to one species but not to another, and sometimes there are bonuses to eating certain cuisines. A human eating a mermaid's flesh could achieve immortality, but also said human could turn into a grotesque undying monster that lives forever in eternal agony! :) You never know!

Class and status affecting foods also depends entirely on the species too. Centaurs, being larger creatures, may have trouble traversing cities, and thus 'richer' centaurs may value such casual things as human street foods as something that could belong in a high end restaurant. Mermaids may like sushi and land-based meats because how the hell do you get beef in the ocean??? Fae may only enjoy fruits grown from trees that have only been watered using the most purified of water, and the most natural of soil (or they may only like soil that has been using compost from demon remains. crazy stuff).

“My lips are sealed.” Maybe from Thea, maybe not. The point here is rather clear, though, and it’s equally clear that Voluntas understands it as well. There sure are stakes now, but that had been the point. 

Vesper knows what it’s like to drink with Volt. He’d turned the legal age a little under a year ago, and had equally learned how difficult it truly was to party with a demon. That night had been quite hard to remember, but he equally knew nothing had necessarily caused him to come to harm either. 

....It meant though, for here, he needed to approach with something stronger than traditional booze, hence the Soul Wine. 

Vesper takes the drink poured for him, but does not sip yet. It’s... a hard question, sure, but there are surely worse. “My father?” Vesper stares into the swaying liquid. “You just... had to go for that one...?” He frowns. “...He’s hard to deal with. It... feels suffocating, sometimes. I want to understand he means well.”

There. Azure eyes lift back up to the Infernal. “...Hm.” Does he want to spill the question so soon? No, he’ll wait. “So, how long did it take for you to start hitting on Raz?”

Being alone.

It's no secret that Vesper's father was... hard on his children growing up. The man was business oriented, looking for success more than providing fatherly affection. His mother had passed during birth, so there was no one to provide that kind of guidance either, her death causing a rift between himself and his brother before he was even born.

Isolation from a sibling that turned into a bully after their living parent's pressure for unparalleled achievements, meant that for almost fifteen years of his life were spent alone. To have an older brother who actively took away friendships, and a father who only cared when his grades were the top of his class, Vesper was isolated.

He... has Volt now, but it's equally why he doesn't want to let the demon go. His festering self doubt and lack of self-worth has made him... far more clingy and desperate not to lose the one person who bothered to try...

...Even if it was for a contract, at first.

((R-Rock. Like no seriously, anything is harassing Rock, and you can kinda guarantee that MZ will show up if nothing stops him. The Maverick just... is extremely overprotective of his partner, almost borderline obsessively so.

Seraph busies himself so much, he doesn’t really have any hobbies. Poor dude. I would say that he does enjoy decoding old data files but I’m unsure if they would be enough to summon him. 

Hm... He’s definitely more fond of activities than anything else. I think offering up chances for him to interact with good company is a surefire way to get him to show up.))

((He has a few things! The ring on his necklace, and a little dingy rabbit stuffy. 

The rabbit... was something gifted to him by his older brother, during a time in their lives when they both truly got along. While that is no longer the case, and equally it was Forrester that damaged the plush in the first place, Vesper still holds the memory of them playing together very close. They’re family, so they should care for each other, right...?

If this plush was lost, the Necromancer would be sad, but... that’s life, isn’t it?

The necklace has been with Vesper... before he was born, actually. It was made by his mother before she passed during his birth. Being the one carrying him, his mom could very clearly tell that her child was going to be born with severe recoil, and had made a charm that was meant to dampen his magic flow.

It works to a degree, and certainly has helped save his life on more than one occasion before Voluntas was a part of it. The loss of this object is fairly obvious; using magic causes severe recoil, even sometimes on spells he normally wouldn’t have that reaction to. It would hurt, ultimately.

Vesper himself would be horribly distraught. The ring was around his neck for as far back as he can remember, and such a familiar object missing would upset him greatly.))

"...Right. It's a trade, right?" Vesper almost seems like he's reminding himself. Information for information? These things always found the biggest thing they could ask for, a trial to test him for whether he was worthy of their help. The spirits were never gentle. "...You.. You won't tell anyone, will you...?"

Especially not the Demon he'd made his companion.

Truthfully, he's almost surprised that there had yet to be a bigger repercussion despite how regularly he called upon them. "It's not a secret I don't want to be alone, I'm sure you already knew that. I want people to like me. I agree to things even when I don't want to do them."

He fidgets with the blond curls framing his face. "I... I don't want anyone to realize how horrible I am. How clingy I get. I want friends, but I don't want them to be friends with each other. Volt... if he knew how manipulative I am, if he wanted to leave, I..."

"I... don't think I'd let him."

How can I say no?

A smile at the recollection, at Vesper's excited question, and the awkward backtracking that ensued. Insisting it didn't have to be done, but such an earnest request... he'd probably been even more enthusiastic than the Necromancer by the end.

You're trusting me with your first tattoo Vesper! Of course I'll do it. Knowing the sentiment behind it only made him all the more determined. So many unspoken feelings, a bond distilled down to abstract patterning on skin. A secret they'd share, until the right time.

Raz flips through his sketchbook, pages already filled with ink. So many small designs in the last few days, but none of them felt quite right.

Drawing had always been an intuitive process for Raziel, he felt out each piece. Meditated to the scratching of pen on paper. Somewhere in the whitespace, he'd find the inspiration, each blank place a possibility.

In that way, art and magic are the same. Unintentional creations that flowed haphazardly from his hands, that became real without vision.

Maybe this one... The shape closes on the page, just sketchy enough not to act like a real circle.

...or.... so he'd hoped. The glow of magic is unmistakable, each stroke of his hand tying together the unseen around him. Weaving a spell whether he meant to or not.

There's familiar white fur suddenly behind his book, the room noticeably colder.

"...oops." He glances up, a lopsided smile at the Winter deity inadvertently summoned here. "I didn't mean to do that, sorry Mor." Not that it'd been the first time... but his partner is more bemused than upset.

...I guess that means it works. Hopefully Vesper and Volt will like it too.

Voluntas' tail swishes thoughtfully as he inspects the vials up front. They vary in size and color. Glass containers, some tinted to protect their contents. Blues, and greens, and browns... Other potions are more robust, clear vessels in attractive silhouettes.

He reaches a clawed finger for one, gently adjusts the heart shaped bottle so it lines up nicely with the rest displayed in the front window. The demon unpockets his cell phone. A swipe, and he's lining up a landscape shot. Sun pours into the room, nearly the prefect time for... ugh.

Phone in pocket. Once again adjusting the line up.

This was the one point of contention he had with Vesperling. Organizing so many alchemical mixtures would be much more appealing by color, not category.

...even if it would probably lead to a few mishaps for rushing customers. Hm. Maybe there is something to this system, even if it's visual chaos. Footsteps have Voluntas turning, and a bright smile meets his gaze.

"Ready to go, Volt?" Vesper asks, but his sunny expression quickly becomes more of a playful smirk. "You're not trying to get work done on our day off, are you?"

"...I would hardly call it work," a slight protest, but he's been caught in the act. The infernal doesn't muster another excuse, instead reaching out a hand for his partner to take. "I was merely filling the time until I had the pleasure of your company once again."
