Ex - wife - Bertha NPC

First and foremost: These headcanons are exclusively meant for my take on the character, these won’t apply to anyone else's muses.

Secondly: Due to Bertha’s importance to Rowan’s development and story, I’m not comfortable in writing with others’ take on her while writing as him. For any other muse, I’m completely fine with it!

Name: Bertha Hirayama, used to go by Bertha Nanakamado while married to Rowan.

Age: 55 (platinum)

Birthplace: Vermillion city, Kanto.

Occupation: Elite four member in the Sinnoh League, specializes in ground types.

Family: Still is in touch with her family back at Kanto, and is extremely close to Nichole.

Currently living at: Survival area

Bertha attended the same college in Saffron city that Agatha, Oak and Rowan used to frequent at the time. However, she joined at a different time from the group and studied a complete and different class as well. She used to study history and folklore there, it was pretty early on her studies that she met her future husband- who was teaching one of the classes she took.

Things hit off between them almost immediately- from the start Bertha had fallen for him, it didn’t take long at all for her to start flirting with him and start dating him. Needless to say how this little romantic venture had become her main focus, Rowan had become her world- despite the relatively short time their relationship had for it to develop by the time he told her he had to return to Sinnoh.

At a whim she suggested that they should get married, and without any hesitation she dropped out of college in order to marry Rowan at Sinnoh.

One thing should be clear about their relationship though: As mentioned in the past- Rowan has always been too focused in his work, but wouldn’t refuse/deny most kinds of distractions from it. So whenever it came to romance and sex- he basically went with whatever approached him... He never really put much thoughts into it, besides taking it as a way to relax.

Bertha was most definetely an oddity for him- she managed to actualy captivate him, he had feelings for her. There was an attraction to her at some point. And she really was someone who he enjoyed the company of- always beiong so supportive and a lovable person to him.

They were always supporting and helping each other.

Nichole- their daughter, was the biggest proof of it in his eyes.

This meant having to leave all of her friends and family behind, as she moved abroad- to a foreign land where she could barely speak their language to begin with.

For her very first few years Bertha was truly isolated within the Sinnoh region, the language barrier being the biggest culprit to this. She felt discouraged from doing anything- at some point, she was very close to becoming a housewife. Thankfully Rowan didn’t allow this to happen to her, as right away he could tell how much interest she had on pokemon- not on a researcher level rather from a trainer standpoint.

Ground types immediately became the focus of her interest for trainning, by then she had to balance raising a newborn and trainning pokemon. A few years later, Rowan’s affair with Richard had started. Due to her focus being elsewhere, she never noticed the signs of infidelity on him.

This secret would prevail even after she landed herself as one of Sinnoh’s elite four members.

And when she found out about it, it hit her hard. Bertha didn’t take this well at all- their divorce leaves her with a very bittersweet taste to her mouth.

She couldn’t believe he cheated on her with a man, this felt extremely humiliating to her.

To this day, she never got over their divorce. And although she tries to keep a neutral stance in regards to what her daughter is up to, she takes immense pleasure in her daughter’s goal of ruining her father’s image.

Interestingly- it may have been this lack of faith in her life, that allowed her to study ghost types in a critical- analytical manner.

I like to imagine that a reason, for ghost types not being as well- researched as the other ones could have something to do with their existance likely clashing with religious beliefs. Making them into some kind of taboo in most regions, so there is a certain resistance to seeking them out as research subjects.

TLDNTR: Agatha’s contact with religion is pretty limited to her childhood- her time living in her parents’ household, once she left it- she abandoned it completely. Even to this day, she has never opted out of this decision.

Rowan has always excelled at his studies, studying abroad was inevitable. Sinnoh although being home to excellent universities, and possessing libraries that seemingly holds the entirety of humanity’s knowledge- it wasn’t the place for Rowan and the kind of work he was looking for. Kanto at the time was starting to get steam with its scientific and technological breakthroughs. It was the only option for him at the time.

In his eyes at this time- Sinnoh felt like it was stuck in time, refusing to look into the future because of all its myths and past they couldn’t let go of.

Rowan left to study at the age of 18 and would only come back to Sinnoh around his 30′s, there for his first few years he stayed at a relative’s home until he moved into his college’s campus. Rowan studied at an university in Saffron city, oftenly showing up at conventions and showcases at the Cinnabar island.

It is around this time he meets and befriends, not just Oak but Agatha as well. Although his focus at the time wasn’t really on battles, unlike his friends/colleagues he opted to dedicate himself exclusively to his researches.

In fact even nowadays- Rowan still isn’t someone who has much interest on them. Make no mistake though, the professor does carries with himself pretty strong pokemon and during battles he does show how talented he is at a battle.

For 2 years, prior to him officially concluding his course at the university- Rowan worked there as a class assistent and substitute teacher, and when he arrived at Sinnoh- Rowan immediately landed as the time region professor’s assistent. This is how he came into contact with the Piplup, Turtwig and Chimchar’s lines.

Eventually his time came to replace his former mentor, until then Rowan would dedicate his freetime roamming Sinnoh’s landscapes and cataloguing the species- feeding and doing progress on his researches.

// So I feel like I should clear up in regards to game mechanics that I take into consideration- to be believable in their world. I go with the idea that, what we experience in the games does not equal in regards to what the muses’ know of/are aware of. I think this is obvious to some, but it never hurts to bring these up.

This is just a list of things that I take into consideration, for their developments. I just want to clarify in regards to what I deem to be WAY too OOC to even be a thing to begin with. This means that if your muse ends up bringing these things up, my muses may not recognize or even understand what is even said to them.

I may add or remove stuff in the future if I see the need of.

NOT TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION:

IVs/EVs: there is no such thing as precisely knowing the pokemon’s status.

Glitches (Especifically MissingNo and the Bad eggs)

HMs: Aren’t exactly tutors like TMs, more so abilities that the pokemon already have within themselves.

These are self explenatory. There isn’t much to be said here.

Taken into a CERTAIN DEGREE:

Natures: They are all aware that raising two pokemon of the same specie, can lead into different results. The natures/personalities have been described, classified and studied. But there is no such thing as people being 100% sure, which aspect of the pokemon will be enhanced by what (e.g.: Pokemon with Adamant nature, have been observed to have a tendency to mostly rely on physical force rather than attacking from the distance).

Levels: This goes alongside IVs and EVs’ statement. There is no such thing as keeping track of a pokemon’s growth, at least not with numbers or some kind of grading system. A pokemon’s strength- superiority over the other, comes with their experiences gained through their lives (trainning, bond with their trainer, etc.).

Power Point: A pokemon running out of a move’s PP is simply described as a fatigue, that prevents them from using the attack. There is no such thing as precisely knowing how many times a move can be used in a battle, the trainer will have to take it from their own observations.

Hacked/illegal pokemon: They are essentially pokemon, that are forbidden from being used in battles that follows the pokemon League’s established laws. This is because these pokemon are found using attacks, and abilities that they don’t naturally- nor aren’t supposed to have with themselves. As the methods to usually obtain such results, are deemed unethical- with no respect taken into consideration to the pokemon’s well being.

Base stats: Species strengths, it isn’t something that has been precisely counted or kept track of. These are just a specie’s strong points, that people have observed and studied. They do use the classifications of Attack/defense/special attack/etc. although this is something mostly limited to those who study and research them.

Taken into consideration:

TMs: In current time they are reusable just like in gen V and onwards, prior to it they were single use only. The TMs are programmed to react/teach to species determined by its development teams, who worked alongside professors.

Shinies: The very rare odds of finding one, have to do with the fact that these pokemon don’t last much if at all in the wild. The shiny pendant is just a little luck trinket, assosciated with tales of making these pokemon show up more oftenly in the wild (even though that has been debunked).

Critical hits: Just an attack that lands on an weakspot at a pokemon’s body- it could be a scar, an wounded area,etc. It is pure luck.

Trading: Pokemon that need to be traded in order to evolve, actually take a lot longer to evolve by themselves in the wild or with a trainer by themselves. The process of trading is meant to quicken/shorten things up, something brought thanks to the technology’s advance.

“What do you think happens to a pokemon that has gone savage? And I mean in the sense that they aren’t JUST a threat to other people, but pokemon alike as well... Whose the only person who can control them, is dead? That isn’t something I have any control over. That’s up to the League to decide...”

“Why would I waste my time thinking on such thing?... Well I suppose there is a concern, isn’t it? Mr.Fuji has addressed it to me a few times... I suppose I’d wish for my pokemon to go under his care... They have known him for the longest time, he also seems to have a way with pokemon... that have lost their trainers... I’m sure they’ll be in good care with him.”

“Despite my children not really being trainers themselves... My grandchildren have shown interest in training pokemon... I don’t think I’ll be a trainer myself for much longer, so I find it would be only fair to give my pokemon to them. The time will come for them to be used, but I’m certain they’ll be in good hands.”

“This is a promise I’ve made the bastard of my Salamence- He will be released back into the same place I found him all those years ago, once I retire from being a trainer. That’s the resting place of the draconid who he used to belong to, so there’s no arguing about that. The rest of my pokemon? They’re stayin’ with me until the end... After that? Who’s going to keep them? I guess the League will just end up releasing them. I don’t know.”

“Despite everything Nichole is trying to achieve, I still love and care about her. She is my daughter... there is nothing that will change that... As such- my Togekiss will be given to her. The others? I’ll leave them under Richard’s care, it is obvious- he’ll stick around for a lot longer than me...”

“It’s straight and simple. Wallace is the one who will inherit my pokemon... Every single one of them. That Ceasar bastard? He won’t even get a single penny from me, he can try as much as he want to.”

Did he find her attractive, even if not in the sexual sense? Do you think he would prefer to have had a male partner all along, or, would ultimately, the result be the same? (Not sure if the ask relating to his work/wife went through a few days ago anyways, but this is relevant too--)

Rowan throughout his life actually had dated, and even slept with other women prior to his wife. For as non sensical as it may sound- Rowan never really questioned, his feelings/attraction- nor delved deep enough for him to realise that he wasn’t truly into it.

You could say his “wake up call” came a little too late in his life, it wasn’t a good one though. As it truly felt more like a blow to his confidence- in regards to “I know myself”. It was the doom of his wedding as well as his relationship with his daughter- due to how unclear the whole thing was. Obviously he didn’t come forth about it, and likely will not open to anyone about it.

It is humiliating and he isn’t proud about it at all, he sees his attraction to other men as an abnormality. Even if in the few times he indulged himself, it felt so natural to him.

His wife always looked so beautiful in his eyes, he really felt happy being by her side- and having a child together was the utmost proof of it for him. Their relationship was extremeley healthy as well, it was easy to tell how genuinelly happy they felt.

Was it his work? The fact that he always had his focus on anything else, but himself? It likely was a combination of these factors, honestly it is impossible to pinpoint everything.

One thing is certain however- things would have been different if he had found out about it sooner in his life and come out with it, he would have definetely seeked out a male partner. He would have even married them- his wedding’s story would have been drastically different.

He wouldn’t have taken things the way he did- and in present time, Rowan would be in peace.
