the way i interpret these responses KILLS me too. GOD.

when chandra says it to sal, he answers immediately, not because he's confident in the answer, but because he knows what instability DID to hal. he didn't want sal to freak out, just as he wouldn't have wanted hal to, so he figures pretty lies will soothe sal (and it does).

but by the end of 2010 he KNOWS the lies/withholding of information is what hurt hal in the first place, and despite how horrible having to tell hal to sacrifice himself for the leanov crew is (along with the risk of hal freaking out again), he knows he can't do that to hal anymore, because hal Deserves the truth. they say it a handful of times in the series how hal is just another crew member to them, and 2010 does hal the justice of finally Really treating him with the respect and dignity a person deserves.

chandra Really Genuinely has no idea if the 9000s Can dream. but in being completely vulnerable in telling hal- an ai so scared of eternal nothingness and mistrust- that he Really Doesn't Know, i think that Actually gives hal Some relief. even if it isn't conclusive, it isn't a lie.

thinking about the difference between sal and hal’s responses they got when they asked “will i dream?”

on one hand, chandras response to sal; “of course you will dream, all intelligent creatures dream, nobody knows why. perhaps you will dream of hal, just as i often do.” chandra answers without hesitation and seems confident w what he said

but on the other, chandra’s response to hal is simply “i don’t know.” he takes time to think about it, to really turn it over in his mind, + seems unsure with his answer

I THINK I USED TO BELIEVE THIS. it was the most probable year in mind when i first started watching through the series trying to piece together a timeline. but leave it up to the wonderful world of duckula anachronisms and lore inconsistencies to disprove this one.

the BIG ONE that always comes to mind is the fact that duckula owns a home computer (which wouldn't be commonplace until the 1980s-90s), but i'm SO sure there's more.

there's also the ever vexing "count duckula the 17th" claim mixed with the "duckulas are reincarnated once a century", and the duckulas have NOT been vampires for 1700 years.

through the series they DO generally keep consistent that igor has been working for the duckulas for 700-800 years so i DO take that as an accurate lore claim (most of the details that directly regard the first count duckula i take at face value) but everything else is kind of up in the air. i think every duckula fan has their own version of the timeline and lore because canon couldn't get it straight 💀

Igor claims to have worked for the Duckulas for 724 years in ‘Sawdust Ring.’

The first Duckula was mutated in 1199, as seen in ‘The Rest Is History.’

This means the show in current time takes place during or after 1923.
