Christian films tend to have atheists be the Ultimate Enemy and thatโs bad because 1) it sends the message that itโs OK to root against people in desperate need of finding God, 2) they depict atheists so in such an over-the-top evil manner that you half expect them to start throwing people off buildings and yellingย โHA!! LETโS SEE IF GOD SAVES YOU!!!โ which obviously is not the majority of any group of humans, and 3) they donโt actually tackle the more dangerous and subtle enemy that we have to deal with, false Christians.
False Christians would also make much more interesting antagonists because they come in so many different varieties. You have the creepy guys who pretend to be super traditional who secretly view all women as beneath contempt and only good for sex and housework, the church leaders who scream slurs against the groups that they dislike and keep their congregations trapped in their cult by preaching that women canโt work and itโs sinful to take benefits from the government so that most of them are in poverty and rely on the cult for support, the new agers who think that all religions are the same and that God is in all of us, the priests who change the Bible to fit the latest trends on sexual mores to be more inclusive, the sanctimonious old women who look down on anyone whoโs struggling and do things like leave tracts instead of tips and sayย โwell God never gives you more than you can handle!โ whenever someone admits to feeling overwhelmed within 100 miles of their presence, Prosperity gospel shills (which includes most Christian filmmakers so I can see why that doesnโt happen but itโd be great if it did), people who are so anti prosperity gospel that they think that praying about anything is wrongโฆ.the list goes on and on.
I can understand why people donโt use false Christians as villains in Christian filmsโweโre the stock villain in most other media so the thinking is that the majority of people want a break from that. And thatโs definitely a good point, but itโs DANGEROUS to act like everyone who calls themselves a Christian actually is one. In his review of the movieย โThe Princess Cutโ, Say Goodnight Kevin points out that the actions of the Christian love interest and the nonreligious love interest are basically the same levels of creepiness and stalker-like behavior, but the movie tries to get us to think that the actions of the Christian are admirable solely because heโs a Christian. (These include abandoning his previous fiancee without warning because Godย โtold him that it was wrongโ which is just code forย โI got cold feet and am using the Creator of the universe to justify it!!โ, and asking the heroineโs father for his blessing to date her before even finding out if sheโs at all interested in him, in a film that depicts her as someone who does whatever her father wants unquestioningly for the most part.) Kevin also pointed out that we donโt really need a movie telling Christian women to avoid dating non-Christian guys because thereโs plenty of those already, we need movies that point out the wolves in sheepโs clothing who are hiding in the church attempting to prey on women who have been raised to see the first man who asks them out as their soul-mate sent directly by God into their lives.ย
TLDR: Christian movies need to make the villains be false Christians because itโs vital to teach people that not everyone who claims to be a Christian actually follows our faith, or else theyโll end up in bad and dangerous relationships of all types with people who we should be keeping away from ourselves at all costs.ย
