Square Enix has announced their participation in the upcoming AnimeJapan 2024 convention on 23-24th March, as well as new merchandise for Black Butler and Fullmetal Alchemist.

[FMA Mobile Original Story: The Silver Battle Cry] (temporary title)

Chapter 1 of the FMA mobile original story, featuring two new characters designed by Arakawa, is now available on the Square Enix YouTube channel! It's a fully voiced event as well 🙌🏻

Introduction of the two new original characters:

The Faithful Commander: Franca Grandy

(Voice Actor: Kito Akari, known for voicing Netsuko in KNY)

"It seems like we're going to spend quite some time together, Edward and Alphonse."

The Blade that Protects his Sister: Ewynn Grandy

(Voice Actor: Kobayashi Chiaki, known for voicing Stark from Frieren)

The story will continue to update on the Squares Enix YouTube channel every Friday, and there will be 12 episodes in total.

Although it's heartbreaking to learn that the FMA mobile game is ending, I'm still very thankful and happy that they're releasing the full event on YouTube.

I will work on the translation of the whole event, but it will take time since I've been super busy at work lately. Don't worry though, cause I'm committed to work on it and it's definitely coming!

Also I dread the work of video editing to put on subtitles 😩 so if anyone's interested in helping me out on that id be incredibly thankful 🙏🏻

Miyazaki's Retirement Declarations (chronologically)

Translated from last week's NHK documentary on the production of The Boy and The Heron (more under cut). I saw people posting a screencap of this and I just couldn't contain myself. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON WAY LONGER THAN I IMAGINED LMFAO

This is from the NHK programme "Professional - Their Working Philosophy" (プロフェッショナル 仕事の流儀) a few days ago (16/12/2023). The episode investigates the production process of The Boy and the Huron, and how the late Takahata Isao influenced the movie.

(It was confirmed within the documentary that Mahito = Miyazaki, Great Uncle = Takahata Isao, The Heron = Suzuki Toshio, Kiriko = Yasuda Michiyo)

The documentary is currently available on the NHK Streaming Service (Location Limited). If you have your own ways of watching and you know Japanese, I would definitely recommend the episode as it gives a lot of much-needed context to The Boy and The Heron. Personally, I haven't found a way to watch it yet, so all I know about the documentary are hearsay I saw on Japanese twitter.

Also, at the very end of the episode, Miyazaki was shown working on a Naucicaa piece without any explanation, which led to many people speculating whether he could be working on a sequel for Naucicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

What do yall think? Do you think he's going to finally retire or release yet another animated film in a few years? I would love to see Naucicaa 2 but I also feel like he really needs to... yknow, chillax a bit and stuff. He deserves a long ass vacation.

Translation: Bonus comic strip from Yomi no Tsugai vol. 5

The volume five paperback for Yomi no Tsugai is FINALLY out in Hong Kong, so I went to buy it after work immediately today lol. I think people who have been keeping up with the magazine updates probably haven’t read this bonus comic, so I scanned it and translated it for everyone. (I don’t own a scanner though, so I took a photo and edited it on my iPad lol please don’t flame)

It is really funny to know how it wasn’t Arakawa who had decided to make an Edward Elric doppelgänger in her new comic, but everyone around her actually (who are evidently unable to get over Edward) 😂 Gabby is my new little baby tho (whom I picked up from the trash) so I’m NOT complaining. At all 😂😂😂😂

Doesn't have any information regarding the exact products yet, but you can seek updates on the princess cafe twitter or website. Their past products were usually available online, so I expect this time should be the same as well, and international shipping is supported through an official third-party company WorldShopping Global (have not used it, cannot comment on reliability).

Please be reminded that the Nendoroid Doll is the newer "premium" line of Nendoroid, the ones that are a bit taller, with better mobility and the clothes are in fabric so you can change their clothes. So this one will be quite different from the previous Nendoroids!

Summary:

There was a rhythmic delay when Mustang came into contact with the armour’s arm, and a dull sound was created solely for Al’s notice. It was cloth on metal, sending subtle vibrations across the emptiness of his armour.

This was a noise that only his elder brother, Winry, and Granny Pinako had triggered in him before. Alphonse realized that he had to add Lieutenant Colonel Mustang to the list now, which was more than a little surprising.

Look at what I did! A new piece of translation!!

This is a familial/platonic FMA fic that I really really really love, featuring a touch starved Al, a fiercely protective Roy, and a tiny pouty Ed. It’s got a lot of introspection from Al’s point of view, which I thought was rather rare, and everything about this fic was just *chefs kiss* pure perfection.

I’m not going to spoil much, you’ll just have to trust me on this one 🥺 it’s funny, candid, heartwarming, and all in all incredibly wholesome.

It’s a very challenging project for me, aside from the fact that I did it during the busiest season at work with no sleep, mostly because the original had a great stream of consciousness style, which I struggled a lot to stay faithful to while trying not to compromise the readability. I couldn’t believe that the fic ended up to be only 4k words……. Because it surely felt much longer as I revised and revised the syntax and diction.

Anyways, please please please read it if you have the time! You definitely won’t regret it!

For the past week, Iwamoto-san has been posting sketches of FMA characters on his twitter as a part of his daily sketching challenge and they are absolutely BEAUTIFUL.

I really want to share his art over here and also translate his posts for you all because I think his commentaries are quite insightful for people who are interested in character design!

If you draw your favourite things out you will know them better! So, this is Edward Elric from #FullmetalAlchemist.

Even if you have decided on the pose you want to draw, it is better to sketch out these three first:

the moment before the pose is struck

the pose itself

the moment after the pose is struck

then decide which image works better for your art. I learned this from a really great senior of mine, and it is very solid advice.

In his very short life, one of Chuuya's favourite past time was picking fights with Dazai. Detailing some of the most well-known episodes below 👇

1. First meeting, also the origin of the "Mackerel" nickname:

As recorded by Dan Kazuo (said to be the last Buraiha author) in his biography of Dazai （Novel: Dazai Osamu 小說 太宰治）:

太宰治は同人誌「青い花」を創刊するにあたり、檀一雄や中也を誘った。東中野の居酒屋で飲んでいると中也は「青鯖が空に浮かんだような顔をしやがって」「お前は何の花が好きなんだい」と絡みだし、太宰が泣き出しそうな声で「モ、モ、ノ、ハ、ナ」と答えると、「チエッ、だからおめえは」とこき下ろした。

Translation: When Dazai first launched his zine "The Blue Flower", he invited Dan Kazuo and Nakahara to join the zine. They met in a bar at East Nakano, and Chuuya described Dazai's expression as "looking like there's mackerel floating in the air". He also asked Dazai (threateningly) what flower is his favourite, to which Dazai answered, as if he's about to cry, "it's p-ea-ch bl-os-so-ms" (in broken syllables). Chuuya responded somewhat disappointedly, "heh, that's why you're like this! (like a loser)"

Dan claimed he had forgotten about what happened after this conversation, only that the bar's windows were broken and Dazai ran away. Personally, I think it's really funny how Chuuya picked the fight by asking what Dazai's favourite flower is, he's a real poet at heart lmfao

What kind of face did Chuuya mean by "as if there's mackerel floating in the air"? None of us have any idea. All the online resources that recorded this episode are confused too. This illustration is funny though:

2. Origin of the "Slug" nickname:

As recorded in Inose Naoki's biography of Dazai (Picaresque: Dazai Osamu ピカレスク-太宰治伝), after this quarrel, Dazai avoided Chuuya like a plague and made the following comment:

「なめくじみたいにてらてらしてとても付き合えたシロモノじゃない」

Translation: "He's like a shiny sticky slug, I really don't want to get into situations where I need to hang out with him"

3. The "running to Dazai's house and bully him" incident:

ある時、酒の席で中也に絡まれ、太宰が逃げるように帰ったことがあった。すると中也は太宰の家に夜襲をかける。太宰の内縁の妻が、「いま眠っています」と中也を説得しても、彼は全く聞き入れず、勝手に太宰の枕元まで上がり込んでしまう始末だ。

その場に居合わせた檀一雄は、見兼ねて中也を家の中から引っ張り出し、雪の積もる往来に投げ飛ばす。

Translation: Once, at a gathering where everyone's drinking again, Dazai left midway and ran back home to run away from Chuuya. Wasted, Chuuya went after him and "attacked" Dazai's home in the middle of the night. Dazai's wife came out and tried to convince Chuuya "he's asleep now...", but Chuuya ignored her, went right in, and pulled Dazai out of his futon (where he's sobbing in, according to some accounts).

Dan Kazuo who witnessed this went into Dazai's home as well, dragged Chuuya out, and threw him onto the snow covered pavement.

Some accounts on this event also mentioned Chuuya calling Dazai "Ba--ka, ba--ka" while going after him, which the author commented "are you an elementary school kid..."

The two truly had a very weird relationship, and how did they not end up actually hating each other is a real mystery.

Translator's notes:

This song is FIRE!! Till now, the this song has the most views among all teasers posted for the new -Block Party- albums with 500k views while most other songs only have 200k. And I really understand why!! It is super catchy and has that classic J-Rock sound to it. The band who wrote this song, WANIMA, is super popular in Japan as well. Please check them out too if punk rock is your thing!

Kuko and Jiro have such great chemistry here, and it's the kind of song that makes you feel very energetic. Absolutely love this song, I think it's probably the best from the two new album. Some of the lines are rather vague though, and I haven't checked out the drama track yet, so I don't know if the drama will give us more context. I will edit this post if I find out my interpretation was wrong xD

Translator’s notes:

I only saw the song’s teaser last night, and I made some kind of $#@&* noise which made my sis give me the stinky eyes. They are SO CUTE!!! My two favs singing a duet is like a dream come true for me, and since I’m not seeing any translations on google so I thought ok I guess I’ll do it myself lol. Luckily these two aren’t the type to use really archaic words xD so I managed to finish the translations relatively fast.

Ramada and Saburo’s voices go along so well! Them together is just cuteness overload and I’ve been longing for a team up between them for super long. Can’t believe it really happened!!
