Deadline has passed!

This is just a note that the deadline for posting assignments to the collection has passed. If you don’t have a gift yet, don’t fret - there are a few extensions that have been granted. I will be checking today to see if any pinch hits need to be sent out and if so posting them here.

Remember, too, that you still have until the 25th to post any extra “treats”, if you choose, to the collection, and also to edit your submissions if and as necessary.

Deadline approaching!

Hello everyone! This is just a reminder that the deadline for posting your assignment is quickly approaching - in less than two days, in fact, on December 18th at 11:59am EST.

Here is a countdown clock.

Please note you will be able to edit your submission(s) up until reveals/collection opening on December 25. However, I will be checking to make sure all submissions by the 18th are at the very least a complete 500-word fic or work of art, and not simply a “placeholder”.

Extensions will only be granted if asked for before the deadline on the 18th. If you feel you need that extra day or two, please do ask or message me. Otherwise any participants missing a gift by the deadline will become a pinch hit (unless that participant also failed to submit a work.)

A brief “How to” for posting your assignment, and treats

Mod here, checking in and hoping you are all making some progress on your assignments! If you’re unsure about the procedure for posting your works to AO3, here are the instructions.

If you have never participated in an exchange organized via AO3 before, it’s fairly simple to make sure your submissions are properly added to the collection. Here’s what you need to do.

Posting your assignment

1. Go to your AO3 dashboard and select “Post –> New Work”, just as you would for posting any new work to the archive.

2. Fill out all your story details as usual. Under the “Associations” tag, you’ll see an option asking “Does this fulfill a challenge assignment”, and you should see “The 2017 SVU Ship Swap” listed there with your recipient’s name in parenthesis. Click on that box.

3. Finish uploading your work as you normally would…and you’re done! The work will be added to the exchange collection, but will not be publicly viewable until the collection opens to readers after the deadline has passed. Stories will also be only listed as written by “anonymous” until the author reveal date.

4. You will be able to edit/revise your story at any time, although it won’t be listed under your “Works” just yet. To find and edit it, go to “My Assignments” on your Dashboard.

Posting a treat

1. The easiest way to post a treat (an extra story for someone, not your assignment) is to start at the collection’s profile page (http://archiveofourown.org/collections/2017SVUShipSwap). You’ll see a box to click on that page that says “Post to Collection”. Click on that.

2. Fill out all of your work details as usual. Under the option to “Gift this work to”, type in the name of the exchange participant to whom you wish to gift your work.

3. Finish uploading your work as you normally would…and you’re done! Like actual assignments, your contribution will remain hidden and anonymous until the date the collection goes live.

Remember that assignments are due by December 18.

The 2017 SVU Ship Swap: Sign-Up Instructions

Sign-ups are now open at AO3. Please read the instructions below to make sure you fill out your sign-up form properly.

Signing up for this exchange is a promise to either write a story (of 500 words or greater in length) or to create an original work of art for another participant. Please be sure you should have the time to commit to doing this, by the deadline date of December 18 2017, before deciding to participate. (You will have 6 weeks to create and post your work.)

When you sign up for the exchange, you must request a minimum of three (3) different ships you’re willing to receive, and a minimum of four (4) different pairings you’re willing to offer. The only ships eligible are those which have already been nominated and approved, and they are all listed in our tagset. (See in easy to read list format here).

For both requests and offers you can submit a maximum of 10. Obviously, the more you can offer and request, the better your chances of being matched on either will be. However, please only offer to create works for ’ships you genuinely feel comfortable offering—this is not meant to pressure you to offer ships you are not comfortable working with.

One out of every three requests you make can be for a crossover ship. So if you request 3 ships, 1 of those can be a crossover. If you request 4-6 ships, 2 of those can be a crossover. If you request 7-10 ships, 3 of those can be a crossover. The moderator will be verifying sign-ups to make sure this rule is followed.

How to Submit Your Sign-Up

Go to the exchange sign up page on AO3 found here:

In the “Fandom” selection box for Requests, be sure to check the box for “Law & Order: SVU”.

In the Relationship box, fill in your first requested ship. Please be sure to enter the ship EXACTLY AS LISTED IN THE TAGSET (even if the auto-fill suggestion is different). If you do not submit it in the proper format, you will not be able to be matched on that ship.

In the “Additional Tags” box, indicate if you are interested in receiving Fic, Art, or both for that ship by checking the appropriate boxes. (Please keep in mind we are very likely to have more writers than artists sign up for the exchange. So if you only check that you are interested in receiving art, you may be difficult to match with an offering participant.)

In the “Prompt URL” box, include a link (optional) to where you have posted any “Dear Author” letter for your matched author/artist to read. There you can include any likes/dislikes you may have either in general or specifically for this ship. You can include specific prompt ideas you might have as well, which many creators find useful in exchanges for giving them ideas. However, keep in mind that “optional details are optional” - your creator is not required to follow any prompts you suggest. They only are required to write or create art for the ship you have requested. It is, however, considered good and proper exchange etiquette to honor any “Do Not Wants” a requestor might specify in their letter or otherwise.

If you don’t feel like writing a “Dear Author/Artist” letter, you can include your optional details/prompts/DNWs in the “Description” box.

Repeat the above process for the 3-10 requests you have, then move on to the Offers section. The process for submitting your offers is very much the same as the above, except you do not have to fill out any “Prompt URL” or “Description” boxes. Just be sure to indicate if you are offering Fic, Art, or possibly either for each offer you make.

When you are finished with your offers and requests, be sure to hit the “Submit” button. If there is any missing information in your sign-up, you will receive an error message indicating what needs to be fixed.

Please remember the difference between “/” and “&” ships! 

/ = romantic and/or sexual relationship

& = strictly platonic, friendship or family

Your prompts—and what you offer to write—must match the type of ship indicated by the / or &. 

Can I edit my sign-up after I’ve submitted it?

Yes, you can edit your sign-up all the way up until the sign-up deadline of November 4, in case you change your mind on your requests or offers—or want to delete your sign-up completely. Requests will be viewable on A03 as soon as sign-ups open, so you may adjust your offers based on what has been requested so far. (Maybe someone’s prompt or letter will give you inspiration to write a ship you initially weren’t sure about offering!)

Your offers will not be publicly viewable.

What happens if I can’t be matched on the ships I have requested?

Your requests will be sent out as an initial pinch hit. You will not be asked to request other ships that you may not be interested in.

What happens if I can’t be matched on the ships I have offered?

If no one has requested the ships you’ve offered to write, the admin will contact you to see if you are willing to offer any other ships for the exchange. You will have 24 hours after that notice to add additional or different offers. If you cannot/do not reply, then regrettably we will have to reject your sign-up from the exchange.

Nomination deadline approaching & getting ready for sign-ups

Just a reminder that ship nominations will close tomorrow, October 20, at noon (12:00pm) Eastern Time. So now is the time to make sure any ship you might be thinking of requesting has been nominated & approved!

Now is also good time to start coming up with prompts for what you plan to request and/or writing a “Dear Creator” letter for them.

On the sign-up form, you will have the option to include prompt ideas for your  each ship you request. These prompts will help give your assigned creator ideas of the kind of work you would most enjoy. They could be general tropes you like (such as soulmate AUs, first-time scenarios, or case-fic) to specific plots you’d love to see for that ship.

The sign-up form and letter is also your chance to express any “Do No Wants” you may have for your request; that is, things you would not enjoy seeing in your gift. For instance, you might not want AUs of any or a specific kind, kidfic, certain types of (or any) kink or sexual content, mentions of particular unrequested characters or ships etc. 

While creators are NOT required to write the specific prompts you may submit, they ARE required to honor your Do Not Wants. And if you do not include any prompts or DNWs, then you are giving your creator free reign to write or draw anything they may fancy for that particular ship.

The sign-up form will have a space where you can include a link to your Dear Creator letter. This is where you can expand upon your prompts and wishes in more detail, or instead of including them all on the AO3 form.  If you haven’t written such a letter before for an exchange, you might want to check out mine, which I’ve already written and posted at the link below as an example:

Just wondering about Peter Stone; since he hasn't appeared in an SVU episode, but will apparently be a recurring character, would any pairings with him be a crossover pairing with Chicago Justice?

I am counting Peter Stone as a regular SVU character for this exchange, since he will be a recurring character on the show—even if we haven’t seen him on SVU just yet! In fact there’s already been two ships for him nominated and approved. :) So, no, if you nominate any pairings with him they will not count toward your crossover nominations.
