You can buy a PDF of my dissertation as discussed in my episode on @josarthistory podcast! Surrealism is so much more than just weird for weird's sake, it is intrinsically linked to our brains and how they work, and so often you can tell a lot about the artist's experiences, memories, upbringing, pain and mental health through it. I delve into this in my essay, so if you need something to read, consider supporting me and my work!

This piece may be close to done! I have been struggling with my depression these last couple of weeks, been finding it very hard to get out of bed each morning. Making this piece have been very cathartic for me as a result.

Did some great progress on this piece this week! The monoliths add a nice contrast to the organic forms as well as furthering the atmosphere of dread.
(it was raining pretty bad when I took these photos, the lighting isn't as good as it would be as I had to cover it with a carrier bag)

The current painting I am working on, I really want the background to have a lot of depth with the fog and clouds.

Could you paint yourself crying?
A few weeks ago, I had an emotional day. I was very stressed out the whole day, then on the night I became very overwhelmed and started to sob. I was scared, I felt like I was not capable to handle the busy week I had coming up, I was worrying so much about everything, and I kept thinking about my mam and how I wished I could talk to her about all of it and get a hug from her. I am very grateful to my brother @andrew-byass for just listening to me and helping me through that emotional moment and that stressful week. I took a photo of myself as I thought that when I recovered and got through that week, it may be interesting to paint a portrait of myself crying.

The start of a new piece, once I sat in front of the canvas, the idea changed quite drastically from the sketches I did.

Had a lovely time at the Shibari life drawing session run by @phoebe_sara_art (IG) on 20th Feb at @zerox_newcastle (IG)! My first life drawing session in years, I definitely want to do more this year! It was fascinating watching shibari, I think my favourite drawing out of these is the second one! 🌙

'The Abstract Concept of You'
(2024) Oil on canvas | 76 x 51 cm
After losing my mam last year, I’ve found myself getting out of the house more to form connections with people and feel less isolated. Many people have helped me through this past year, but I’ve also had conflict that has left me feeling lost and frustrated, and it started me thinking about human relationships. I desire to be authentic in all my relationships, but often it’s not possible for many reasons, mainly self-preservation and anxiety. In addition, being a lesbian in her mid-twenties has caused me to think about romantic relationships too as I don’t have a lot of experience in them.
The outline of the human form is predictable, but what is the outline of your personality?
