Bright/Dark
Short Story #2
Here is another short story. This one was for a school assignment.
FT: excessive use of the word "paddle" and "surface."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The full moon reflected brightly on the surface of the water, a big contrast to the darkness of the lake.
The water rippled against the hull of my kayak as I stop paddling. The soreness of my arms diminished a little bit and I took a deep breath, relaxing. The grand stillness and quiet of the lake could've almost made me forget that I was lost.
Cursing myself to have taken too long, I looked around. There was no part of the lake that I recognized in sight. A small breeze shook the leaves of trees along the bank. If I wasn't lost, I would've definitely enjoyed this night. Deciding it was time to go, I took a few seconds and went along my way.
Though, before I could go too far, movement caught my eye underneath the surface of the water. It must have only been a big fish who strayed towards the surface, though it caught my attention nonetheless.
Before I could resume my paddling, the paddle itself was forced out of my grasp and disappeared abruptly below the water. I only sat there confused on what just happened, then quickly leaned towards the water. Something had just took my paddle out of my hands.
I tried to look for something, but all I could see was the black water. There was no way I could see far into deep water nor get my paddle back. The silence of my surroundings suddenly seemed overwhelming, suffocating.
As I looked down in the water, I felt something grab my hand and pull me backwards. The kayak rolled over and I fell into the frozen water. I kicked and flailed my arms to push me upwards, but a pair of hands wrapped themselves around my head from behind and pulled me down.
Long nails dug into the skin of my cheeks, as I brought my own hands to the others and tried to pull them off. They didn't budge. In fact, they pulled my head harder, turning me completely upside down while dragging me into the depths of the lake.
I choked on water as it filled my lungs and replaced any shred of oxygen. My sore arms slowed their movements as fatigue set in. Tiny specks of darkness clouded the perimeter of my vision as I looked up towards the surface.
The moon shone brightly above, and I faded below.

The Sound of Freedom
Short Story #1
So here is a short (really small!) story which is the first one that I have ever posted. This is really for constructive criticism, so please, if you have any feedback, let me know.
Also, it is written in the present tense. Usually I write in past tense, since it's easier and a bit less complicated. I've never written anything in the present tense in English before, so it might sound weird or look a little off.
Anyways, this was right off the bat and it's not perfect, but I want to get better. Enough stalling. Enjoy!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The fog hides the trees and the cliff further down the mountain.
The soft grass left, leaving space for twigs, small rocks and wet fallen leaves. Autumn had only just arrived and yet there are so many leaves on the ground that it hides the mud underneath.
There is no noise coming from the vast nature around me, not from birds or small rodents or even from the wind. Though, I doubt that they would cover up the sound of my heavy breathing or twigs cracking underneath the soles of my shoes. The sound of my exhaling could overpower the volume of my beating heart, however that is up for debate.
The trees behind the fog make themselves known as I barrel down towards them, branches snapping in my face. The cold wind, numbing the sting from the branches, pushes tears down my face as I run down the mountain.
Despite the newly wet mud threatening to make me fall over, I pick up my pace as I see the edge of the cliff straight ahead of me. Even if I can't hear anything behind me, I know that it's there, coming for me, and I know that this cliff will grant me an escape from it. Doesn't matter what is beyond the precipice.
As I get closer to the edge, the fog clears up and the blue skies appear. The sun casts its rays through dark rain clouds, illuminating the whole valley beneath the mountain.
Regardless of my bizarre situation, it brings me a strange feeling of calmness and as I take my last step on the rocky cliff, I smile.
My grin only grows wider when I launch myself into the air, completely unrestrained and free.
Feeling overwhelmed with joy, I yell:
"You're not getting me today, dickhead!"
Suddenly, the loud silence breaks, making room for the sound of freedom.
As I plummet towards the river beneath me, I can feel my hair flowing past my head, upwards, in the wind.
And just before I hit the cold dark water, I hear the echo of my laughter ringing all across the valley.
