there’s nothing new under the sun and no medium gives less of a shit about that than fanfiction. maybe bc of its “derivative” nature, fanfiction writers/readers show an unironic, open appreciation for tropes that you’ll never find in mainstream communities. like, a film critic would say “this movie just took the cast of stargate sg1 and put them in the plot of aliens” and the fanfic community would be like “ok where’s the 100k fic op”. i have read approximately 2300 fics of the same two characters falling in love bc there was only one bed and no one has the power to stop me from reading more?? anyway, fanfiction is an absolute paradigm of post-post-modernism and in this essay i will,
there's something so deeply upsetting about looking back on lucius and ed's relationship throughout the show after the finale. lucius is a fantastic character who embodies all of the wonderful themes of this show more than anyone else, and is established almost immediately as the most emotionally intelligent character in the cast with a fine tuned understanding of relationships and is constantly picking up on things no one else seems to notice or understand, to the point where he becomes somewhat of a therapist to both stede and ed when they need it. lucius, when you get down to it, is the only person other than stede who really sees ed. and ed knows this, because when he's at his absolute lowest, hiding from the world and from his crew, he specifically asks lucius to come and talk to him because he's the only person he trusts enough with this stuff to let himself be seen by him. lucius is the only one who can bring him out of his depression, and so ed reaches out to him. and just like he did for stede before, lucius tried to save ed from a breakup and tried to ease his heartache. and ed is inspired by it, too. he gets up and out of his blanket fort and sees the crew again and tidies up, finally ready to make a fresh start, only for him to be driven back into the darkness. and that's not lucius' fault. he did exactly what ed wanted him to. when there was no one left in the world who could see him, he let lucius in and allowed himself to be vulnerable in front of him. when ed felt hopeless and alone, lucius was there to give him the company and the words he needed. lucius is a good friend, a counsellor, a shoulder to cry on, someone that you trust with the most vulnerable and broken parts of yourself. lucius knows who ed really is. lucius, no matter what, can be relied upon to do the impossible and bring a man on the brink of self destruction back to himself. and that's exactly why ed needed to get rid of him.
the homosexual urge to wear your unhinged pirate boyfriend’s clothes | OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH
(gentle reminder david jenkins gave us the devastating news that ed is still wearing stede’s black cravat and that the fuschia robe ed did his post-breakup wallowing in was the robe stede wore to illustrate how ed “literally brought more colour into stede’s life”)
There's something absolutely critical about this scene. It's so clear that this renewed identity as the Kraken is a ferocious little mask for him to wear as a means of deflection- of insurance that he won't be hurt like this again. Never again will someone have the ability to come near his heart- to see him as Edward Teach.
In the barracks, he was so excited for a life without blood, guts, and murder. He was looking forward to just being Ed. Ed and Stede- a new life forged together. This is one of the last shots that we see of Blackbeard, and it reminds us that his heart is still in there. He hasn't lost it, no matter how he tries to throw it away. It's been hurt, stabbed, fractured, and he's trying desperately to keep it wrapped in bandage.
