it's very very important for shmi to die and for that to be it. irretrievable loss, grief without any mitigating factor.

but i do think vader should go through a phase in his last weeks of seeing his mother stand in the corridors of the death star - watching him, watching him. not begging for help, not forgiving him. a terrible witnessing, and full of rage and disappointment when he does try to confront her.

only at the end does she come close. only at the end, as he lies dying with his son beside him, down she look down at him and call him 'ani' again, and hold his hand to guide him, as they used to walk when sandstorms stared rising over tatooine, and they had to hold fast to each other not to be devoured by the planet's own force on the way to captivity.
