Spectacular day with a family making Swedish fire logs. A tricky day with everything soaking wet from all the recent rain but these bushcrafters all got there in the end. Well done everyone.
Frosty morning with the kettle on for a private bushcraft skills booking. A family from London with be using cutting tools to whittle items and learn fire lighting skills to make Swedish fire logs.
I’ve been asked by WoodlandsTV to produce a few films on bushcraft activities for the woods. Here’s the first one I made a short while ago. How I make feather sticks. If you haven’t tried it before you should, it’a a great knife skill to master and an excellent way to light a fire.
BUSHCRAFT & SURVIVAL in Uruguay.#12 The 3 Stick Friction Fire.
Funny how when you have a plan when you set out, then quite naturally things change and the plan goes out the window, you end up doing something new.
Well that’s what happened to me when I went on a forage for large sticks/branches to make new hearth boards for friction fire sets.
The forest consisted mostly of Pine and I soon noticed that all of the dead fallen sticks were too small for regular hearth boards. This meant I couldn’t find suitable wood.
Had I been in a survival situation I would have failed at starting a fire because I was fixed on only one set up for friction fire. What I should be doing is looking at the resources available and adapting to them.
This eventually got me thinking. Can I make a friction fire with only small/thin sticks?
This video is my first attempt at this challenge which certainly taught me a lot about adapting to my surroundings and available resources.
