Unusual Suspects
by Nyhgault. At last, the final refs for Wild Shape's main 5. Everyone has had at least a few tweaks to their design to make them consistent with canon, and this is the first time seeing Marcel and Sira in full detail. This was finished at the perfect time too. Episode 2 has been "ready to go" in my head for a good 2 years, but I'm just now getting to a point in my personal and professional life where I have the space to refocus on creative pursuits. I've given myself a May deadline, and you all have my full permission to hold me to that deadline.

Starcatcher
by LittleBadWolf on FA. Kespers on Earth love stargazing. The night sky looks so different than it does on Kesparel. It reminds them of how far they've come, and what they left behind.

Check out Nik's work if you haven't already, especially their VN Endless Labyrinth of Night Roads. It's got a really cool atmosphere and some stunning moments.
aaaa which character should I put? I think Olivier would work best with their style

Spark Seeker
by Metal on FA. Mijra shows off his electric prowess. He can generate and direct electricity at will. He usually uses it to repair and mod his shapeshifter, or to mess around with Earth electronics in his spare time. But beware - if you cross him, you might find yourself on the wrong end of a powerful electric arc!

Lights On
by rudzik on FA. Named after the amazing Hatchie song. Today is my 27th birthday. My last year has been really chaotic. This was my first full year having a full-time career and being 100% on my own. I don't have much of a work life balance (really common for the first few years in my field), and it leaves me so drained most days I can barely get a coherent sentence out. But I'm pushing through it, and little by little I'm learning to set boundaries and be more confident in my abilities.  I haven't had much mental space or time to be creative, but for some reason I can still make music. I got a Roland Fantom last December, and it's opened a whole new world for me. Hopefully I can get some real demos going soon. We'll see.

For the same reason most conlang videos about phonotactics begin and end with syllable structure. Most conlangers are amateurs who don’t think get into the deeper side of linguistics and tend to be English-biased.
Why is every conlanging video about syntax limited to "Are you SOV, SVO, or VSO?"
I need help getting more indepth! I already know I'm doing SOV, but I have no idea how complex adjectival or dependent phrases work outside of english (or even within english). It's to the point where I'm not even sure what part of speech "of" is in the phrase "I was a child of three". Would I mark "child" as accusative and "three" as dative? Or is "three" just an adjective without case marking? Would phrasing it "child three" mean "3-year-old child" or "three children"?
Am I just stupid because I grew up with English as my only point of reference? Or is it the failure of what little education I got on linguistics?

I'm on a quest to find a bizarre lost film
When I was a freshman at Chapman University's Dodge College of Media, my roommate and I came across an archive of old senior theses. One of them, a mysterious little film called Zero: The Virtual Game, caught our attention. 8 years later, I remembered it at random and I can't stop thinking about it. It was made all the way back in 2001, and was probably the most 2001 student film ever.
It was a trippy Matrix ripoff shot on camcorder, featuring over the top kung fu fights, a nonsense plot about a man with a special CD who uses his hacker abilities to warp reality on his cheapo Dell desktop, and the crowning moment of all: a fight scene where the protagonist decapitates himself and launches his head like a missile at the BBEG. He survives.
I went digging to find the director based on what little I remembered about him. Eventually, I found my guy. His name is Masanori Kobayashi, best known for his work on the Resident Evil franchise as a cutscene and ADR director.
But his film is nowhere online. It has no IMDB page or anything. The only evidence this film even exists is a single paragraph on an ancient Geocities blog. Supposedly, it played at a film festival. At least one theater full of people saw it.
Tumblr media
"ifilm.com" is long gone. I tried WayBackMachine with no luck.
I even sent an email to the guy's production company in English and Japanese, but haven't heard back. And that leaves me here. If anyone out there has any information on this, let me know. The world deserves to see this strange little film.

Just do Reed-Kellogs instead, they're way simpler 😈
Tumblr media
Entirely unrelated to anything, but I'm working on a conlang and have been for a number of years, now. As a linguist, I know that it would be good to do syntax trees for it but what if I just, like, didn't??? Because I hate them and they hurt my brain and I simply do not want to make syntax trees???

What's in a name?
| ⇇ first | ← previous |
Cimar's native speakers, a reptilian species called kespers, have two personal names: a given name and a chosen name. Their given name is given to them shortly after hatching. This name is one word, most often an adjective, though nouns aren't too uncommon.
The "honor" of naming a new kobold usually goes to whoever is filling out the paperwork at the hatchery that day. If that seems pretty impersonal, that's because it is. This name is understood to be temporary, so not a lot of thought is put into it.
A kesper will have their given name through childhood. Upon reaching maturity, they chose a new name. At this point, their given name becomes a vestigial last name. Everybody then calls a kesper by their chosen name, even childhood friends who knew them by their given name. Chosen names are also one word, and most commonly are nouns.
For some examples, here are the Cimar names of Wild Shape's three lead (native) kespers, and an explanation of what their names mean.
Sirâ Vecta: Sirâ means rain, a fitting name for someone with a "stormy" disposition. Elemental terms are very common for chosen names. Vecta is a deep, blood-red color. Sira's design is based on the coral snake.

Since Sira's ref hasn't been drawn yet, here's a coral snake for reference. Source: National Geographic
Mijra Nakí: Mijra means fire. Nakí has a few meanings, ranging from "lucky" "safe" "protected" or "special". Nakí is reserved for kespers who are the only eggs in their batch to hatch. Mijra is also "lucky" because of his circuit-like scale patterns, an uncommon mutation that occurs in only ~0.5% of the population. Kesper scale colors and patterns are determined by a complicated epigenetic system which cannot be predicted before birth, and this has lead to a cultural belief that the patterns are reflective of the kesper's essence, or personality.

Mijra's initial reference, drawn by Maim (maimface on Twitter)
Rín Sarva: Rín means spirit or aether. Sarva means "night". That doesn't seem like a fitting name for someone with white and teal scales, but his name is a reference to kesper mythology. The word Sarva comes from a folk hero of the same name who had white scales. He was the protagonist of an epic poem about the origin of the binary stars of their long-lost homeworld. This name supplanted the older kav word for night, limra, which now just means "darkness".

Rín, as drawn by Yinller (yinllercomic on Twitter)
I didn't realize it at the time, but my own name (Specter) would also be Rín in Cimar. Funny, because I consider him to be the least like me personality-wise of all the kespers. (Between you and me, his personality is based on an old flame of mine, but that's a story for another time)
