18+ Only - Smutty Chapter + Possible Triggers

Present:
You walked into the bungalow, sufficiently shaken, and Bradley instructed you to sit down while he drew you a bath.
By the time he got back from the bathroom, he found you fast asleep, curled up on the sofa.
He smiled down at you as he gently stroked your hair from your face, you stirred and hummed, a sound that reached right inside Bradley and tugged at his heart strings.
“I love you, I won’t let anything happen to you.” He whispered, and then scooped you up in his arms and carried you carefully to bed.
Once he’d removed your dress and tucked you in, ensuring you were asleep again, he left the room and checked the door and windows.
He thought Jacob's threat was just that, an empty threat, but he had to be sure you were safe.
Once he was truly satisfied everything was locked and there was no one lurking in the bushes outside, he finally allowed himself to reel in the whole night. He opened the fridge and pulled out a beer, sitting at the kitchen island while he drank it and his heart rate began to calm, the pain in his knuckles slowly subsiding.
In the bedroom, you stirred and felt around for Bradley. When you realised he wasn’t there, you got out of bed and walked out into the living room, the cool air on your almost bare skin making you shiver.
You suddenly heard a sniffling noise coming from the kitchen.
You stopped in the doorway as you found Bradley wiping his eyes as he sat, a half finished beer on the island in front of him.
“Bradley?”
He spun around, surprised to find you there, and quickly hid his face as he wiped the tears that slid down his cheeks.
You quickly crossed over to him, forcing him to turn around in his stool.
“Hey, what’s the matter?” You cooed, cupping his face in your hands. His hands fell naturally on your hips, rubbing the bare skin not covered by your underwear with his thumbs.
“Nothing, I’m fine. I didn’t see you there.” He hiccuped.
“Please talk to me, there’s obviously something wrong.” You pleaded.
Bradley lowered his head to rest on your chest and he sighed, “I’ve… I’ve never ever felt rage like that before. I’ve been in so many shitty situations before but nothing has ever made me see red like that. I thought I was going to kill him, Birdy.” He looked up at you and his eyes were filled with pain.
“I’m so sorry Roo, I never meant to put you in a situation like that.” You whispered.
His hands tightened on your hips as he shook his head, “No you don’t understand, I’m emotional because no one’s ever meant this much to me, to make me lose it like that. I know I’ve told you I love you already, but I think it’s finally hit me just how much. I don’t think there’s a word for it Birdy.”
“You don’t need to find a word for it, I know, Brad, I know. I can feel it. I’ve never wanted anyone the way I want you.” You slotted yourself in between his legs, threading your fingers through his golden curls. He moaned softly at your touch and his eyes closed.
“I’m scared to lose you.” He breathed.
“You’re not gonna lose me.” You kissed him softly, and Bradley’s arms circled around your waist. One more tear rolled down his cheek as he deepened the kiss, standing slowly from his seat.
He pressed you up against the kitchen island, as his kisses grew passionate and hungry. He bent down and picked you up by the back of your thighs, lifting you onto the island.
He slotted in between your legs and cupped your jaw, soft moans escaping both of you as you began to grow hot and desperate for one another.
“I want you.” Bradley growled against your lips, and you smirked as you reached back and unclasped your bra. He leaned back as he watched it fall and his hands briefly moved to caress your breasts.
“So beautiful.” He whispered, and then he was pulling his vest over his head.
You loved his bare skin, he was golden and toned and his huge muscles made you feel so small and fragile.
Your hands trailed down his chest to his v-line, and Bradley shivered as you unbuttoned his jeans and yanked them down. Bradley was rock hard underneath his underwear, and you ran your hand over him. Bradley twitched and bit his lip as he watched your small hand run delicately along his length, but he had something entirely different in mind.
Pushing you gently back against the island, Bradley hooked his fingers into your underwear and slowly slid them down your thighs and discarded them to the floor.
He lifted one of your feet and began to kiss up from your ankle to your inner thigh, where he stopped teasingly.
His beautiful brown eyes, now black with lust, flitted up to look into yours as he slid two fingers into his mouth and then through your folds.
You gasped as you lay against the cold counter and threw your head back. Bradley growled as your back arched, and he slid a finger inside you, pumping twice before the second finger joined in your warmth. You whimpered as he pumped slowly, curling inside you, but when you felt his lips gently press against your clit, you bucked into him.
You felt him grin against you and then his tongue darted out and swiped through your folds. He continued to pump and curl his fingers slowly as his lips sucked around your bundle of nerves, his tongue taking turns circling and flattening against you, a pattern that quickly had you panting.
“That’s my good girl, cum for me.” He hummed against you, speeding up his movements, his nose teasingly bumping your clit and his moustache prickling your sensitive skin. Wet sounds spurred you on as your legs began to shake and tighten around Bradley’s head, and you felt yourself coming undone, clenching around Bradley’s fingers with a loud, shaky moan.
Bradley felt himself throbbing painfully as he enjoyed the show from his front row seat, but neither of you were aware of the third pair of eyes that also watched from just outside the kitchen window.
————————————
Past:
The months passed and you and Bradley maintained contact, calling one another regularly, which turned gradually to text.
When Bradley went off to college, the texting and calls grew less and less, with the time difference and classes getting in the way. Truth be told Bradley had begun enjoying partying, and that took up a lot of his spare time.
You went off to college not long after and it was then that your schedules really clashed, and your almost hourly texting became weekly, if that, and calls came to a halt.
It’s not that you didn’t think about Bradley, in fact he plagued your thoughts and clouded your mind almost constantly, at first. But then when you’d started your new job, and met Jacob, you finally had something more tangible to focus your energy on, and you didn’t have the time to think about your feelings for Bradley as much.
Bradley also dove into partying and meaningless relationships to drown out his desperate need for you, and the intense feeling of missing you at every moment of the day. But as you began to text less, his pride stopped him from following up with you, and then the texting stopped altogether.
When Carole passed away, Bradley only wanted you there to comfort him, but he was too grief stricken to even pick up the phone. He knew he should tell you, but he couldn’t face breaking your heart the way his had been.
When Bradley found out he’d finally been accepted into the Naval Academy, the first person he thought about was you. He decided that enough time had passed, and he should break the bad and good news to you. He picked up the phone and dialled your number, but the line just beeped and the call ended. He tried to text you but the messages didn’t go through, and his heart shattered. Had you changed your number and forgotten to tell him?
A few months later, Bradley was in the process of moving, packing up his and his mothers things when he came across the forgotten love letter under the chest of drawers, dusty and lonely on the floor.
Bradley suddenly realised what he needed to do, as he dusted off the letter and his heart began to thud.
The plane journey was agonisingly long because he was so desperate to just see you, hold you and finally tell you how he felt. He’d left it far too long, and he knew it was finally time.
The rental car seemingly wouldn’t drive fast enough, and Bradley cursed loudly as the heavy traffic slowed him even more, as if the universe was trying to stop him for some reason.
Finally he pulled up outside your apartment, his heart ready to explode out of his chest, a beaming smile taking over his handsome face, a bouquet of flowers in one hand and the love letter in the other. It was time, finally.
He crossed over the small lawn and looked up at the big bay windows of the apartment block, and he stopped dead in his tracks.
There in one of the windows, totally unaware of his presence, stood the love of his life in the arms of another man.
You giggled as the man kissed your neck, and then picked you up and threw you over his shoulder, carrying you off somewhere deep inside the apartment.
Bradley’s heart shattered into a million pieces, as he dropped the bouquet onto the ground. He’d waited too long, and now it was too late. A thick lump formed in Bradleys throat as he nodded to himself. He scrunched up the love letter in his clenched fist and skulked back to the car.
That was the last time Bradley would see you, until that night in a New York bar, when stars finally aligned.
———————————————
Present:
A few weeks later, you started to feel tired all the time, more emotional, sensitive and nauseas.
You knew you and Bradley had been less than careful, so you told him you were just popping out for a few things and would be back soon.
Bradley kissed you goodbye and you walked the short distance to the local store.
You felt sheepish and awkward as you paid for the pregnancy test and slid the box in your handbag. As you walked back to the bungalow you considered what a baby could do to your relationship. You hadn’t discussed it so you had no idea if Bradley even wanted children.
You were suddenly overcome with nerves, and very very nauseas.
When you walked through the door, Bradley asked you if you wanted a glass of wine out in the garden while he fired up the grill, you refused and said you were going to take a shower.
Bradley thought it was very unlike you, but he knew you were feeling under the weather, so told you to call him if you needed anything.
You disappeared into the bathroom, breathing a shaky breath as you pulled out the box.
You took the test and you waited, waited with bated breaths. After a few minutes you gained the courage to pick up the stick, and you let out a sob.
Bradley whistled as he started the grill, the sun baking against his broad back. He had never been happier in life and things were perfect.
He had a deployment coming up but that was still a few weeks away, so he wouldn’t worry about that until it was closer to the time, for now he just wanted to enjoy the perfect life he had somehow fallen into.
“Bradley.” You said in a small voice behind him. Bradley spun around and smiled at you.
“Hey beautiful.” He smiled, “Are you okay?” He chuckled.
You were smiling at him but you looked like you were about to burst into tears.
“Yeah, I’m more than okay. But…” and then it started, the waterworks, you couldn’t turn them off and you sobbed.
Bradley quickly crossed over to you and pulled you into him. “Woah woah, what’s wrong? I thought you said you were okay?” He chuckled sympathetically.
“I am.” You sobbed into his bare chest. Bradley pulled back so he could look at your face, worry etched on his now.
“Then why are you crying, sweetheart?”
You sniffled up at him and let out a wet laugh. You reached into your back pocket and handed the stick to Bradley.
He pulled in a sharp breath as he realised what he was holding, and slowly flipped it over.
He let out a short chuckle, a hand moving to his head as he stared at the stick.
His eyes grew watery as he looked at you in awe.
“You’re...?”
You nodded, shaking with adrenaline.
“Oh my god, that means I’m…” his voice was shaky.
“Yeah, you’re gonna be a dad.” You said in a small voice.
A smile took over Bradley’s face as he scooped you up and spun you around until you stopped him for fear of throwing up. He put you down as you both chuckled through the tears, he cupped your face and kissed you for a long time.
“Oh my god, oh my god…” he mumbled, “I’m gonna be a dad.”
“Are you happy?”
“Are you kidding? I thought life was perfect a minute ago, I was wrong, it’s perfect now. It can’t believe this.” He looked at you seriously, nodding. “Wait, are you happy?”
You laughed, wrapping your arms around his neck. “Happiest I’ve ever been, Roo.”
Bradley kissed you deeply, and when he pulled away his grin grew even bigger.
“I want to celebrate, tonight. If you’re not up for going out for dinner, how about I make us something nice, get some non alcoholic champagne, run a bubble bath, give you a massage, what do you think?” He purred.
“Mmmm, that sounds nice.” You grinned up at him.
Bradley went inside and drew you a bubble bath, little candles scattered all around the bathroom to help you relax.
You made a mental note to call Gabby afterwards to break the news to her too, and then you climbed into the bath and sighed as you relaxed in the hot water.
Bradley promised to be right back, he was just going shopping to grab the drinks and something for dinner, while you soaked.
You heard the front door close and sighed as you felt the lingering nausea begin to pass. You rested your hand on your stomach and breathed out a soft laugh, you still couldn’t believe it, but in all honesty you really shouldn’t have been surprised.
Bradley would be the best dad, you could just feel it.
You heard the front door open and close, and you grinned. “You forget your wallet again?” You called out.
You heard no response, so you sank under the bubbles and floated for a while, enjoying the silent echoes that being under water provided. It reminded you of all the times you’d gone swimming in the sea, a sense of peace and tranquillity that relaxed your muscles.
You didn’t hear when the bathroom door opened, or the dull thud of heavy shoes crossing slowly over to the tub.
The only thing you noticed, was a shadow passing across the candle light behind your eyelids, and your eyes flew open as a pair of hands closed around your neck.
———————————
Still Present:
Bradley whistled as he parked his bronco, hopping out and crossing the parking lot to the supermarket. He had a spring in his step as he picked out two bottles of non alcohol champagne, then scanning the isles for dinner inspiration.
He had steak in mind, but wasn’t sure if that would be too heavy for you while you weren’t feeling 100%, so opted for Fettuccine Alfredo instead with a light side salad. As he browsed for ingredients, he felt a shiver creep up his spine, and his heart began to thud. He took a deep breath and pushed the feeling to the back of his mind as he shopped.
He walked past the baby isle, and had to stop himself from letting out a whoop. He decided it wouldn’t hurt to have a quick little browse while we was here, he knew it was still very early, but he wanted to buy something that he could use to break the news to his squad with before he left for his deployment.
The thought of leaving you now was almost unbearable, so he distracted himself as he walked past onesies, baby booties and toys of all shapes and sizes.
He chuckled as he came across a teddy bear with Aviators, and knew he had to have it.

Still Present:
You struggled under the water as the strong hands tightened around your neck. Your nails dug into your attackers arms as you tried with all your might to pry their hands off of you, quickly running out of air the longer you were held under.
Suddenly you were pulled out of the tub and dropped on the cold tile floor with a heavy, wet thud, and you gasped for the air you so desperately needed.
Your eyes were blurry from tears and soapy bath water, and you blinked rapidly trying to clear them, although you already knew who was in the room with you. You could smell him, his musky cologne one that was etched into the very fibre of every nightmare you'd had in the last few years.
''Jake-'' you spluttered, coughing as the words burned your throat, ''Jacob, what are you doing?''
Before you could even sit up, or try to cover your naked body, his hands were around your throat again and he dragged you across the floor towards the bedroom.
You tried to scream, you tried so hard, but it was proving impossible.
With one hand around your neck, his other grabbed your hair and you were suddenly being hoisted onto the bed and thrown into the headboard.
You began to sob as you quickly covered yourself with the duvet, cowering as far away from him as you could possibly get.
''I heard the good news. Congrats.'' he spat, walking around the bed towards you.
''Why are you doing this? Bradley will be home any minute.'' you sobbed.
''Not likely, plus I may have put the chain lock on the door.'' he grinned, kneeling on the bed in front of you. You couldn't move, your body was frozen, plus you knew if you did, he was too fast and too strong and it would likely make things worse for you.
''Don't cry sweetheart, you know I hate it when you cry.'' He swiped your cheek and you flinched away from him. Big mistake.
His grin turned into a scowl within a split second, and suddenly your head was hitting the headboard with a loud crack. You cried out and again your head hit the headboard.
You felt dizzy and Jacob turned blurry again as you touched your head, warmth covering your fingertips.
He let go of you and crossed to the foot of the bed, bending over and grabbing your ankles roughly, dragging you down the bed. You didn't fight it, you couldn't, your body felt limp.
''Anyway, like I was saying at the bar before we were so rudely interrupted... When you left it really hurt me, it was a stab in the back I really didn't expect, you know?'' he chuckled psychotically. ''You could have at least given me the courtesy to say goodbye, or something.''
You groaned, trying to force yourself up and out of his vice grip.
He pulled your legs again, harder this time and you fell back down.
''We were so good together, Y/N. We could have gotten married, had kids by now, if you'd just fucking behaved yourself.''
You whimpered, ''Help! Please, somebody!''
You felt a sharp slap across your upper thigh.
''Bad girl, I'm still talking.'' he tutted, hardly worried about your cries for help, they were so week and quiet, he was sure no one would hear.
You sobbed, your head was throbbing. ''Why are you here? What do you want?''
''Well, that should be my baby. You should be my wife. This should be my life. He stole you from me, so now I'm going to ruin you for him.''
''Fuck you.'' you ground out as you kicked with all of your force at his face.
Most of it missed, but your heel did catch his jaw and he stumbled back in surprise. You crawled to the end of the bed as he lunged for you.
His hand wrapped around your ankle and you kicked again with your free foot, managing to just slip out of his grip.
You fell to the floor with a thump and forced yourself to your feet. You could hear him climbing off of the bed and walking around to you, but you didn't dare look back.
Running as fast as you could to the bedroom door, you actually thought you were going to make it, but suddenly a hand was in your hair and a strong arm was wrapping around your waist, tugging you back into the room.

Still Present:
Bradley pulled up the drive, parked the bronco and fished the bag of groceries from the back seat.
He whistled as he walked up to the front door and turned the handle. The door didn't budge, so he figured he must have locked it on his way out after all. He dug in his pockets for his house keys and tried again to open the door. The door opened a few inches and stopped.
Bradley cocked an eyebrow in confusion and put the shopping bag down on the ground. He slid his hand up the crack in the door, and his heart stopped as he felt the cold metal of the chain lock in place.
''Birdy? Did you lock the door baby girl?'' he called.
The house was silent, so he tried again. ''Babe? Can you unlock the door, please?''
Nothing. Bradley began to panic. You had never locked the door with the chain lock before, and even if you had, why weren't you responding.
Without further hesitation, Bradley took a step back and launched himself at the door.
It didn't give way, so he walked further back and ran at the door, throwing his entire weight against it. With a loud crack the chain snapped and the door flew open, hitting the bungalow wall with a deafening bang.
And then he heard your muffled scream, desperate and hoarse.
Bradley ran for the bathroom, but found nothing but a pool of water on the floor and candle wax strewn across the tiles.
''Birdy?!'' he called, and a softer, muffled cry slipped through the bedroom door.
Bradley was on auto pilot as he burst through the bedroom door to find Jacob straddling your naked body on the bed, he was still fully clothed, but he had you pinned to the bed, both of your hands in one of his above your head and his other hand covering your mouth.
There was blood on the white sheets and Bradley couldn't see where it was coming from. His body went numb as he surged towards the bed and tackled Jacob off of you and to the ground.
The two men landed with a heavy thump and immediately Bradleys fist lifted in the air and then swung down, connecting with Jacobs jaw. Again the fist rose in the air and went hurtling down onto your attackers face, and you forced yourself off of the bed, grabbing your robe and quickly covering yourself.
You felt sullied, dirty even, having had Jacob see you in your most vulnerable form, even if he had already done so in the past, you were no longer his to see like that.
You forced yourself onto wobbly legs and stumbled dizzily over to where Bradley continued to beat Jacob.
As you rounded the bed, a glint of something shiny caught your eye, but it was too late, the knife was already in the air and plunging into Bradleys torso before you could even utter a warning.
You screamed as Bradley stopped, a shaky hand moving to touch the knife wedged between his ribs. He pulled the knife out and threw it to the floor, gasping. With one last furious glance at the bloodied Jacob, Bradley's fist connected once more with his face, and Jacob was knocked out.
Bradley collapsed onto his side, gasping for air. You fell down next to him to assess his wound, yours suddenly seeming so trivial, and you wanted to scream as the blood pulsed out of him.
''I- I'm going to call an ambulance, keep your hand there.'' you wept, and ran to the livingroom.
The phone rang for what felt like forever, but finally connected, and then everything went black.
__________________________
Bradley woke up in the hospital bed a week later. The doctors said he'd lost a lot of blood and punctured a lung, he was very lucky to be alive. The first thing he asked for was you, but the nurse said you'd been called down to the police station for another statement, and you'd be back soon.
When you did get back, you cried and held Bradley for what felt like forever. You didn't remember much, but apparently you'd just managed to mutter the address to the 911 operator before you passed out, and by the time they'd arrived, Jacob was coming to.
The scene was a complete mess, with two unconscious and one just barely able to speak or move.
They'd called your emergency contact, who just so happened to be Gabby, and explained the situation. They described the two men you were with, and as soon as they did, she went numb. She told them about Jacob and to not let him out of their sight, and that you'd confirm everything when you woke up.
Gabby got on the next flight to California, and was by your bedside when you woke up.
You told the police what happened and when you were ready they started questioning.
Jacob was now safely behind bars, for the time being at least.
Bradley was terrified to ask, but even more terrified not knowing.
''Is...is the baby okay?''
You stroked his face and kissed his forehead. ''Yeah, they're fine.''
''They?'' Bradley wasn't sure he heard you correctly, and he must still be woozy.
''Yeah, they. There's sort of... two of them.''
Bradley chuckled in happy disbelief, and looked at you like he had never seen anything more beautiful, anything more amazing than you in that moment.
He cupped your face and his eyes locked on yours, ''I love you, Birdy...'' Bradley breathed. ''I've loved you since what feels like the beginning of time, and I'll love you until the end of it. I would have really liked to have done this somewhere less... sterile, and without a hole in my lung-'' he tried to chuckle but winced in pain, ''but I don't think any other moment would be better than this...''
He took a deep breath and grinned, ''Marry me?''

18+ Only
-----------------------
Past:
''Would you hurry up? We're never going to get a good spot.'' Bradley groaned as he stood outside the guest bedroom while you got ready for your beach day.
''Okay okay, I'm ready.'' you said as you shuffled out of the bedroom, an oversized t-shirt draping over you like a blanket.
Bradley scrunched up his nose, ''How are you gonna catch any sun with that thing on?''
''I'll take it off when we get there.'' you said as you grabbed your beach bag and made your way down the stairs.
You opted to walk the short distance to the beach as the weather was perfect. Carole had given you one of her big sunhats and Bradley had fished out his dads old aviators. Together the pair of you looked like an old married couple, squabbling about stupid things jokingly as you walked.
Bradley slung his arm over your shoulder as the sound of the sea and happy vacationers became audible, and he sighed.
''One day when we're older and earning money, you're gonna live with me.''
''Why would I want to live with a gross boy?'' you teased.
''Because I'll be like super ripped and you won't be able to keep your hands off of me.'' Bradley winked, and you shoved him away with a groan.
''Yeah you wish.''
Little did you know everything Bradley had said would come true, eventually.
You found a little spot on the beach and put your things down, scanning the water for somewhere to swim.
Bradley bent over to remove his shoes, and as he stood back up you were in the process of taking the huge t-shirt off.
Bradley gulped loudly, your body was incredible. He wasn't sure when you really became a woman, but there was nothing left of that dorky teenager he'd helped years ago.
Your bikini was figure hugging and complimented every curve. Gabby had taught you a thing or two about dressing for confidence, and boy was she right, you felt much less awkward in your own skin suddenly.
You began to walk towards the water, ''You coming, Bradshaw?''
Bradley closed his mouth and nodded, ''Yeah...yup. Coming.''
As he followed you to the sea, he tried to keep his eyes on the water ahead, instead of on his best friend, who was really beginning to give him confused feelings.
He watched as you stepped into the sea, the waves lapping at your soft skin. You gasped as the cold water splashed your chest and hopped around as you adjusted, and Bradley's jaw hit the ground.
He suddenly couldn't hear or see anything but you, and he felt himself losing control over himself.
''Shit.'' he mumbled as he quickly sat down under the cold water.
''Wow that's brave, the waters freezing.'' you said, as the cold waves splashed up against Bradleys lowered form.
''Mhmm.'' he mumbled through gritted teeth. Sure, the water was cold and it wasn't a pleasant feeling being submerged so quickly, but it was doing wonders subduing something else.
He breathed as his erection went down, and waded deeper out into the water, following you as you finally submerged yourself.
You swam around and floated in the water for a while, enjoying the happy sounds of people splashing around, the smell of the sea and sunscreen filling your nostrils.
''It's so nice to be back.'' you sighed happily, looking back at the shore.
''It's nice to have you back. You have no idea how lame it's been without you.'' Bradley chuckled.
''You're so soppy all of a sudden, who even are you?'' you teased, and splashed Bradley in the face.
He looked at you in shock, ''How dare you?'' and splashed you back.
You laughed and lunged at Bradley, gripping his shoulders and trying to push him under the water, but you'd forgotten how tall he was, and he didn't even budge under your weight, instead your body landed against his, and he steadied you with his hands on your hips, your faces inches apart.
You flushed red and pushed away, swimming backwards as you glared at him playfully.
''Alright, I'm cold. Let's go get a tan.'' you instructed as you swam back to shore, your heart racing at how desperately you wanted to prolong the awkward little moment you'd just had.
''Okay, I'll... I'll be out in a minute.'' Bradley mumbled awkwardly, waiting yet again for the water to subdue his excitement.

Present:
You blinked rapidly, desperately hoping you were having a horrible nightmare and you'd wake up in the bungalow tucked safely under Bradleys strong arm.
Nat moved to your side and gripped your arm to steady you. Bradley had told her briefly about a bad ex and Nat was smart enough to recognise trauma when she saw it.
“Is it him?” She mumbled in your ear.
You nodded, as you forced some air into your lungs.
“What’s wrong? Aren’t you happy to see me?” Jacob chuckled, his dazzling smile almost nonchalant as he edged closer. Alice grinned from behind him.
“Hope you don’t mind, Y/N, but a quick scour of your Facebook showed so many happy pictures of you two. I just figured… well, it might be nice to find him and reunite two old flames.” She smirked, a glint of revenge in her blue eyes.
“When I heard you’d left Fall River, it really hurt me…” Jacob stepped forward and took your hand, cupping it in his other.
You still couldn’t speak, for fear the tears would begin to fall and you’d look weak. You tried to put on what you thought was a brave face, but to everyone around you, you looked terrified, like a ghost of bad times past stood before you.
“I really thought that one day, eventually, you’d forgive our squabbles, and you’d come back to me. I mean, I called, I called so many times. And I came to your door but you were never home, but I just thought our love was stronger than all of that and you’d eventually wake up and see that too.” He sighed, his blue eyes crinkled as he grinned down at you, black hair slicked back perfectly as it always had been. Nothing about Jacob had changed in the last few years.
He was still the same devilishly handsome, darkly dangerous man as before.
You had somehow, inexplicably, been able to avoid him for the past few years despite the small size of the town. Jacob had changed schools after the breakup, but it didn’t stop the ferocious slander from the other teachers who sided with him.
You managed to memorise his very particular pattern. He shopped on certain days, at certain times, in certain stores. On Saturdays he went to the library for most of the day, so you knew it was safe to run your errands, and you mostly stuck to shopping in the evening when you were sure he was at home, sipping wine and tucked into a good book.
You felt immense relief when you left town, finally feeling a sense of freedom you hadn’t had in a long time, but suddenly you felt all of the sneaking around and moving was for nothing, and your body began to shake.
“Please leave.” You managed to squeak out.
“Leave? Do you realise how far I’ve come just to see you? The least you could do is have a drink with me, beautiful.” He cupped your cheek and your body locked up. A single tear slid from your eye as your nostrils filled with his musky cologne, all of the bad memories rushing back.
“Jacob I think you need to go, if you know what’s best for you.” Nat stepped forward.
“You called?” Hangman sang as he walked back into the room, Bradley following and both none the wiser.
“Not you, Jake. Him. It’s Birdy’s ex.” Nat scowled at Jacob. Hangman eyed up the newcomer and moseyed forward with his own face plastered in a cocky grin.
Bradley’s eyes finally landing on you and your shaking form, and man with his hands on you, his eyes went dark and his body tensed up.
“Well well well, I’m sorry ‘Jacob’. I’m afraid there’s only room for one Jake in this building… in this city even, and that’s me. I’ll be happy to escort you out.” Hangman drawled, taking the toothpick out of his mouth and flicking it dramatically to the floor.
Jacob let go of you and focused his scowl on Hangman, walking cooly up to him. “This is none of your business, kid. Maybe just stay out of it if you know what’s good for you.”
Suddenly, from just behind Jacob, Bradley cleared his throat. The two men were about the same height, but when Jacob turned to face him, Bradley seemed at least a head taller than him as he stood tall and angry with his fists clenched at his side and his jaw set.
“You’re Jacob?” Bradley ground out.
“That’s me, buddy. My girls been talking about me, I take it?” Jacob smirked over at you. But just as soon as he looked back, Bradley’s hand was wrapping around Jacob’s neck as he pushed him up against the nearest wall.
Jacob struggled as his neat hair came loose from its slicked back hold, huffing against the wall as his eyes scanned the room.
“I’m only going to tell you once to get the fuck out of here, if I catch you anywhere near her again, it will be me and every naval officer in this room you’ll have to contend with. Got it?” Bradley growled, his face red and a scowl etched deep into his features as his huge hand wrapped tighter around Jacobs neck.
The Hard Deck was now silent as everyone, including Penny, stood with bated breaths. Even Alice looked surprised.
Hangman, Bob, Javy, Mickey and Reuben stood in a half circle around Bradley and Jacob, ready to pounce at any sign of struggle. Nat stood at your side, her arm hooked around your waist just in case, as you stood watching in horror.
“Fine. Fine. I’ll go.” Jacob said, his shit eating grin still unfaltering as Bradley reluctantly let go of him.
Jacob smoothed his hair back and straightened his shirt and jacket, and Bradley followed him through the crowd towards the entrance.
The rest of the Daggers followed, and reluctantly your feet began to move too. You had to be sure he was really leaving.
Once out in the parking lot, a crowd beginning to gather at the door, Bradley stood with his huge arms crossed as he watched Jacob walk towards his rental car.
You breathed a shaky sigh of relief as you thought it was all over, but Jacob suddenly stopped, chuckled to himself, and then turned around.
“Actually, I always knew it would end like this. With me kind enough to give my girl another chance, but naturally the little whore has surrounded herself with more men than she can satisfy.” He spat, and it was enough to release Bradley’s rage.
Bradley surged forward across the gravel, “You fucker!” He growled, and his fist connected with Jacobs face.
Jacob stumbled back in surprise, touching his split lip and smirking at the blood on his fingers as Bradley stood over him.
“Stay the fuck away from her. She’s not your girl.” Bradley spat.
“You don’t know who you’ve fucked with. I’ll see you around.” And with that Jacob turned and climbed into his car.
Alice stood in the crowd and crossed her arms. Her plan had seriously backfired. All she wanted was for Jacob to take you away so she’d have another shot with Bradley, she hadn’t realised the full extent of the situation. Before anyone could pick a bone with her, she slunk off into the crowd and disappeared.
Bradley took a moment to breathe, his hands on his hips as he collected himself.
You stood behind him, hands still clasped over your mouth, shaking like a leaf. Bradley turned around and his angry face softened as soon as his eyes landed on you. Wordlessly he pulled you into him and held you, kissing the top of your head.
“Are you okay, Birdy?” He whispered into your hair.
You nodded, wrapping your arms tightly around him, “Thank you.”
“I’m sorry you had to see that.”
“I’m not... It’s nice to know so many people are fighting my corner, especially with you at the centre. I don’t feel so scared anymore.” You said as you looked up at him.
Bradley bent down and kissed you gently, his swollen hand threading through your hair.
You pulled back slightly, “What about the others? They’re gonna know.”
“I don’t care. I want them to know you’re all mine.” He said before his lips connected with yours again.
“I fucking knew it!” Nat chuckled from the entrance.
“Alright alright, let’s give them a moment.” Bob smiled, and everyone filtered back inside.
—————————
Past:
The summer had passed in a blur, and before you knew it, you were spending your final night in the Bradshaw household before you had to fly back the next morning.
The summer had been filled with perfect memories. Long days down at the beach, evening walks around the neighbourhood reminiscing about the good old days, lots of laughter at dinner times and movies in Bradley’s bed before you went to sleep.
Carole didn’t mind you spending time alone in each others rooms, provided you went to sleep in your own beds at night.
On the last night you finished watching The NeverEnding Story for the tenth time, a movie you and Bradley had loved when you were younger, and you said goodnight to him as you left for your bed.
Bradley sat in his bed for a long time after you left, contemplating how to sneak the letter he’d wrote you into your suitcase without you noticing. He’d been thinking about it all summer, and had decided he needed to tell you how he felt.
He wasn’t the best at using his words, so felt it better to write everything down, and hoped you’d be long gone by the time you read it, so that he wouldn’t implode into himself if you read it in front of him.
Once he was sure you must have fallen asleep, Bradley crawled out of bed and grabbed the letter from his desk drawer. His hands shook as he held it in his hands. Letting out a shaky breath, he snuck out of his room and padded quietly down the dark hallway.
He carefully opened your bedroom door, and he could hear your steady breathing. You were asleep. He snuck inside and crept towards your suitcase. He bent down and slowly unzipped the front pouch.
“Bradley?” Your soft voice hummed.
Bradley shot up and threw the letter on the floor, kicking it under the chest of drawers.
“Hey Birdy.” He whispered.
“What are you doing in here?”
He was quiet for a moment, but then he walked over to the bed and climbed in next to you.
“I just wanted sleep next to you one last time.” He whispered.
“Won’t your mom be mad?” You whispered back, turning on your side to face him, close enough to feel his breath on your face.
“She doesn’t need to know.” His heart was thudding against his chest.
“Okay, I’m glad you’re here. I always sleep better when you’re around.” You grinned.
You closed your eyes as Bradley stroked a strand of hair off of your face. You looked so beautiful, it would be so easy just to kiss you. But Bradley was terrified you’d reject him and he’d ruin the entire summer by making one wrong move.
Little did he know you were desperate to tangle your fingers in his hair and have your way with him too.
“Birdy?” Bradley’s hoarse voice mumbled.
“Hmmm?”
“I… uhm…” he trailed off, unsure of how to put what he wanted to say into actual words.
“What is it?” You hummed, your hand gently moving to lay flat against his chest. You could feel his heart thudding and you wiggled closer.
Bradley’s breathing caught in his throat, and suddenly he was overwhelmed by the fear of losing you.
“Nothing.”
“Okay.” You sighed, slowly turning over so your back faced him. You squeezed your eyes shut in embarrassment. You really thought he felt the same for a moment there, but you must have misread the room.
Bradley silently cursed himself. He knew the moment had passed to say anything, but it didn’t mean he couldn’t just enjoy having you there before you left again.
Edging closer, Bradley slipped a hand onto the dip of your waist, and lay his head on your pillow so he could rest his chin on your shoulder.
“Goodnight, Birdy.”
“Goodnight, Roo.”

Past:
Bradley decided to skip the party that night. Michelle was getting on his nerves and he just really missed his best friend. He hadn’t spoken to you in over a week and withdrawals began to set in.
You plagued his dreams and he longed for your company, your adorable laugh to ring out when he made a really bad joke, or just to have a genuinely interesting conversation with someone who wouldn't look at him like he was looney.
All he got these days was stale conversations about the latest fashion, who slept with who, and how that guy they met at that party that one time got a fake ID.
He was growing quickly bored of this new lifestyle, and wished he’d taken the time to savour his old life when he had it. To savour you.
Bradley was finally coming to terms with the fact that he should have told you how he felt before you left, but the opportunity was now long gone and he would likely never have the chance again.
But that didn’t mean he couldn’t still tell you how much he cared.
“Ma, I’m home!” Bradley called as he jogged up the stairs to his bedroom.
Carole poked her head out of the kitchen, “I thought you were at Michelle’s tonight?”
“I was gonna, but I really just need to talk to Birdy.” He said as he stopped at the top of the stairs.
“Okay sweetheart, I’ll get dinner started.”
Bradley disappeared into his bedroom and shut the door, he took a deep breath as he picked up the phone.
“Hi this is Y/N, I’m not here right now. Please leave a message and I’ll get right back to you!” Your sweet voice rang over the other end, and it gave Bradley goosebumps. Simultaneously it also filled him with guilt. You kept missing one another, and it was mostly his fault.
The line beeped and he cleared his throat.
“Hey Birdy, sorry I missed your call yesterday, looks like we keep missing each other.” He chuckled sadly, cleared his throat again and sighed, “I really, really miss you, kid. Life’s not the same without you. Please call me back, I don't care what time it is, just call, I'll answer.”
He hung up and rubbed his face frustratedly.
Part of him wanted to pack a bag and catch a bus or plane over to you, but he knew it wasn’t the right time.
Not yet anyway.
Bradley looked around his bedroom for a moment, until he had an idea.
He got up and crossed the room to his desk and pulled out a sheet of paper.
If he couldn't tell you how he felt, he decided he'd write about it instead.
————————————
Present:
The weeks passed in a beautiful blur, and you were really growing accustomed to life in the little bungalow with Bradley.
He couldn’t keep his hands off of you, and he was your biggest supporter when it came to your art, which was flowing out of you with ease.
He made it hard to concentrate when he kissed your neck from behind while you tried to paint, but once he’d taken care of you, well and truly breaking the bed, that’s when some of your best work was created.
One day you were lounging in the back yard catching some sun, while Bradley did some gardening, shirtless and in his favourite jorts. The sun glistened against his tanned, sweaty body, and you couldn’t help the way your core throbbed as you bit your lip and watched his muscles ripple as he worked hard to move around a series of large stones.
He glanced over at you and caught you staring, and a wide grin spread across his face.
“Really? Like this? I’m disgusting.” He chuckled.
“I know, but it's really doing it for me. Please?” You stuck out your bottom lip and pleaded.
Bradley couldn’t resist you if he tried, especially not when you lay in such a small bikini, face flushed by the sun and lust. He straightened, wiping the sweat off of his forehead with the back of his hand. He sauntered over to you slowly, teasingly, and gave you a wink as he grabbed your calves, slowly sliding his hands up to your thighs and pushing your legs apart, crawling in between them.
He captured your lips hungrily and took your breath away as your hands wandered his sweaty abs.
You wrapped your legs around him and he moved his lips to your neck, and down, down, sucking marks into the valley of your breasts until he reached your bikini top. He tugged at it gently with his teeth and -
“Hellooo? Anyone home?” A voice rang out, and you pushed Bradley off of you, blushing bright red. Bradley groaned as he pushed himself up and off of your lounger.
“Who is it?” You whispered, flustered.
“Nat.” He mouthed back, then took a deep breath to calm himself. “Out here Nat!” He called. “I really need to start locking that door.”
You chuckled and adjusted your bikini. No one knew about you and Bradley yet, you'd been keeping your relationship in a secret little bubble of bliss, not keen on other peoples unwanted opinions just yet.
Nat poked her head out the back door with a grin. ''Hey guys! I did knock, but I guess... never mind.'' She could obviously tell she had interrupted something by the flushed looks on both of your faces. ''I'm heading over to the Hard Deck for a few drinks, just wanted to see if you're interested?''
Bradley looked over at you and you shrugged, ''Sounds fun to me, I just need to get changed.'' you smiled.
Bradley sighed, ''Yeah ok, can I shower first?''

Past:
Bradley was positively bouncing as he waited at the airport's arrivals terminal, you were finally getting off of the plane to come and stay with him for the summer, and it had been months since he had last been able to hold you, even if it was just platonic.
He craned his neck as he waited for you to arrive, growing more and more impatient by the second, until he saw your smiling face bobbing along with the crowd. You'd had to jump to see over the heads of some of the passengers, but when you spotted Bradley, you ended up in full sprint, zig zagging past everyone to get to him.
As soon as you were close enough, you dropped your suitcase and jumped into Bradleys arms. He spun you around with his face buried in your hair, and he felt as if he could fly in that moment, he was so happy.
''Oh my god, you have no idea how much I've missed you lil bird.'' he mumbled into your hair.
''I missed you more!'' you exclaimed as you pulled back and cupped his slightly less chubby cheeks to inspect him. ''I've missed you and your dumb moustache.''
Bradley chuckled as he put you down, grabbing your suitcase and your hand as he walked you to his truck.
You sang along to cheesy 80's hits and caught up on the past few months as he drove you to his house, and Bradley couldn't stop glancing over at you, thrilled that you were finally back with him, even if it was just for a little while.
''So how's Michelle?'' you asked, teasingly, ''Have you done the thing yet?''
Bradley blushed and cleared his throat as he eyed the road, ''Uhm, we broke up, and no.''
You looked over at him with wide eyes, ''Oh, I'm sorry Brad, you never said anything. What happened?''
''I took too long.'' He shrugged.
''Took too long to do what?''
''Sex, Birdy, I took too long to fuck her.'' He said plainly, a hint of humour behind his lips.
''Ah, gross, Brad. Didn't need to put it so crassly.'' You cringed, ''I am sorry though.'' you nudged him gently.
''It's okay, she wasn't right for me.''
You wanted to say 'I knew it.' or 'I told you so.', but you didn't. You didn't need to, you knew he knew.
''Why did you hold out on her? Thought you just wanted to get it over and done with.''
''I couldn't stop thinking about what you said, about the first time needing to be with someone I actually care about.''
You blushed and nodded, ''Yeah, that's sort of why I still haven't done it either.''
Bradley glanced over at you for a moment, but he said nothing, turning his attention back to the road.
Before long you were pulling up on his drive and you hopped out before the truck even fully came to a halt. You legged it inside and skidded into the kitchen, where Carole stood brewing a cup of tea.
''Carole!'' you screamed, running over to hug her.
''Oh sweat pea! I'm so happy you're finally here.'' she hugged you back and kissed the top of your head. ''It's gonna be so nice to have another woman in the house again.''
Bradley walked in and put your suitcase against the wall. He scoffed, ''You mean 'girl'.'' he said teasingly.
You shot him a glare, ''Shut up Bradshaw, I don't even wear princess pyjamas anymore.''
Carole laughed and shooed you both upstairs to unpack.
Bradley showed you to the guest bedroom and sat with you while you unpacked your things into the little chest of drawers.
''So, any boyfriends or anything your side?'' he asked as he leaned back on his elbows.
You scoffed, ''No, they're all dreadful where I live. I have got a friend though, her name's Gabby, I think you'd really like her.''
''I'm glad you're fitting in, but don't forget where you really belong.'' he sighed, laying back against the bed, his torso exposed. You pried your eyes away and forced out a chuckle.
''And where is that?''
''With me.'' he said simply.
You stopped for a moment, but then realised he must have meant physically, as in back in your home town, and you said nothing.
''Woaaah, what are these?'' You heard him say suddenly, and turned around to find Bradley fishing a pair of thongs out of your suitcase.
You gasped and snatched at them, but Bradley moved them out of reach.
''Give them back, Bradshaw!'' you swiped again, falling onto the bed as Bradley held them up high.
''Not until you tell me what they are, dental floss?'' he teased.
''Shut up, I'm not a kid anymore.'' you threw yourself onto Bradley and pinned him under you, snatching the underwear out of his hands. You looked down and you were now face to face with him as he chuckled, and your face must have looked even redder up close.
''I know you're not, Birdy, you haven't been for a long time.'' he was suddenly serious as you hovered over him.
You pushed yourself up and shoved the thongs back into your suitcase, zipping it up.
You stuck your tongue out at Bradley, ''I'll unpack the rest later. Once you're in your own room.''

Present:
The Hard Deck was packed by the time you arrived, and Bradley took your hand as he lead you through the crowd towards the pool table at the back. You smiled as you saw the familiar group you'd come to adore over the past few weeks.
You said hi to everyone and wedged yourself in between Jake and Bob as they asked you to help settle a debate.
Bradley went to the bar and grabbed a round of drinks.
''So Baby on Board here says showering at night is better, but I say showering in the morning, so you're fresh for the day, what do you think?'' Jake drawled and took a sip of his beer, sure you would agree with him.
You laughed, ''Well, I think it depends on your lifestyle, but personally I shower at night, you're not gonna get dirty or sweaty while you sleep, and if you do I'd suggest a morning shower. But the way I see it is if you shower before bed, then you're all soft and clean and sleep better, and should still be clean in the morning for the day ahead. If you only shower in the morning, by the time you go to sleep you'll be all gross again.'' You shrugged and Jakes face fell, he looked defeated. Bob hooted and gave you a high five.
''I'll have you know, I do get very dirty and sweaty at night, so I'll stick to my mornin' showers thanks.'' Jake said sarcastically, and sauntered off. You and Bob laughed, and he rolled his eyes.
''Last week I lost the debate, so it's only fitting I win this one.'' Bob grinned. ''So, how are...things?''
You blushed and lowered your voice, ''Good, really good, but no one else knows. Can you just keep it between us three for now?''
''You got it.'' he smiled.
You found it difficult to act normal around Bradley for the rest of the evening, having to catch yourself from flirting with him out in the open, and he kept finding himself staring at you across the room for prolonged periods of time before having to remind himself that no one knew.
You were tempted to pull him into a bathroom stall, but as packed as the bar was, you knew someone would notice.
You were sat on a stool as Nat told you an embarrassing story about Jake, who stood not far away trying to convince you that she was telling it wrong, when you noticed Javy's face drop. He immediately stopped his game of darts, and tapped Jake on the shoulder, whispering something in his ear.
Jake looked over and sighed, you couldn't see what they were seeing from your seat, but Jake made his way over to you and leaned over so only you and Nat could hear him.
''Heads up, chickadee, Alice just walked in.''
Your heart began to thud, but you smiled a calm smile and nodded. ''Thanks Jake, where's Bradley? We should probably let him know.''
''Not sure, I'll go find him.'' He patted you on the back gently as he walked off to find Bradley, and you went back to your conversation with Nat, trying to push the fact that Alice was more than likely still unhappy and would be looking to pick a fight with you or Bradley.
You and Nat laughed along to her reminiscing about the days before she was friends with Jake.
''Anyway, so then when I pointed it out to Hangman, he acted as if he didn't do it, and he tried to...'' she suddenly trailed off, distracted by something over your shoulder, or rather someone. She frowned as she stood from her seat.
''What?'' you asked as twisted in your seat, but just as soon as you had turned around, you wished you hadn't. It was if you were inside a horrible, realistic nightmare. You thought you were going to be sick.
Your breath was knocked from your lungs and you stumbled off of your seat, tears prickling in your eyes as you blinked rapidly and fought to breathe.
''Hey pretty girl. It's been a while.''

18+ Only - Smutty Chapter
__________________________
Past:
The day had rolled around quickly, and you were packing the last of your box's into the back of the trailer. You checked your watch and sighed. Bradley had promised he'd come say goodbye, but he was nowhere to be found and you had to leave.
You paced up and down the driveway as your family did a final check of the house, and you contemplated calling him as your dad closed trailer door.
He sighed and walked over to you, wrapping a comforting arm around your shoulder, ''We have to go, sweetheart, we have a very long drive ahead of us.''
You looked up at your dad with watery eyes, and nodded. If Bradley really wanted to say goodbye he'd be here. You climbed into the car next to your siblings, your dad climbed in and started the engine.
You huffed as you leaned your head against the window, the moment seeming almost surreal. You couldn't believe you were leaving.
You'd gone around to the Bradshaw’s the day before to say goodbye, having a long cup of tea with Carole before you left, but Bradley had insisted he would come round to say goodbye properly.
You bit back tears as your dad started to pull away, your chest tightening at the thought of not just being able to sneak in through Bradley’s window at night, or him waltzing into your house at any given time of day without warning. You knew you’d be hard pressed to find a friendship like this again.
Suddenly, your brother noticed something in the rear view mirror straightened in his seat and craned his neck.
''Stop! It's Brad, look!'' he pointed, and your dad stopped the truck. You looked into your moms side mirror and sure enough, Bradleys own truck was hurtling down your long street, coming to a screeching halt behind the trailer.
You climbed out and walked over as Bradley opened his door.
''I thought you weren't coming.'' you grinned, your arms crossed over your chest as the cool Autumn breeze blew over you.
''I would have come sooner, but they took longer than I thought to make them, and they messed up the inscription the first time.'' Bradley chuckled apologetically as he crossed over to you, holding a long chain up to the light. You held your hand out and touched the dangling object, letting out a gasp as you read it.
''B and B, when the stars align we'll reunite. Bradley, this is beautiful.'' You breathed, and you slammed into his chest, wrapping your arms around him as you fought off the tears that threatened to spill over.
Bradleys voice was hoarse and fragile as he spoke, ''Don't forget me, Lil Bird, I'll always be here.''
''Never, I'll never forget you Rooster.''
________________________________________
Present:
You followed Bradley and Bob outside, feeling very sheepish and guilty as the lingering effect of Bradley could still be felt coursing through your veins, and the guilt only increased tenfold as you heard Alice swearing at Jake.
You stood just behind Bradley as he came to stand in front of her, ''What's going on?''
''What is this I hear about Y/N living with you?'' Alice was bright red and Jake looked like he had just put his foot in his mouth as he skulked back towards the grill.
''I was gonna call you this afternoon to tell you, it was sort of a quick decision-'' Bradley tried to explain, but Alice was already moving over to him with her accusatory finger in the air.
''You mean it took you, what, a day to ask her to move in with you, but me, who you've been dating for 8 months, you won't even give a key to?'' Her voice rose higher and louder, and it looked like any wrong move would result in her exploding.
You couldn’t blame her sudden change in mood, or the fact that this Alice was a stark contrast to the Alice you’d met just moments ago. You were the reason for all of this and you felt horrible.
“Is… is your shirt scrunched up? What were you two doing in there?” She growled, her teeth bared.
Bradley shot a glare over to Jake, smoothed out his shirt, and then looked as calmly as possible over at Alice. ''Can we talk inside, please?'' he said under his breath.
Alice huffed as she stormed into the bungalow, shoving past you, and Bradley followed, closing the door behind him. Everyone tried to ignore the hushed whispers and occasional shouting that came through the thin walls.
You took a deep breath and faked a smile as you walked over to Nat and Reuben, opening a bottle of beer and trying to make conversation, however the growing argument in the house made quick work distracting everyone, until you were all silent and just listening.
''Well maybe you should then! It hasn't been working Al, I was going to call you to talk about things later but this has saved me the effort!'' Bradley yelled, and shortly after, you heard the front door slam and everyone jumped.
It took a while for Bradley to come back outside as he collected himself, and when he did Jake shot him an apologetic look. ''Sorry man, I thought she knew.''
''It's okay, honestly things have been tense for a while.'' Bradley breathed, running a hand through his hair. ''Sorry guys, let's not let this put a damper on anything.''
And sure enough, not long after, everyone was back in high spirits, laughing and talking, eating and drinking as the sun began to dip. Occasionally you and Bradley made eye contact for a prolonged amount of time, but you forced your eyes to someone else and made conversation to distract from the intense feeling you felt in your chest every time is eyes burnt into your skin.
After you'd said goodbye to everyone, you began to tidy up. The bungalow was a mess of beer bottles, chip bags and dirty plates, but you welcomed the distraction as you began to clean.
''Hey, you don't need to do that.'' Bradley gently grabbed your arm as you bent to pick up a bottle. You flinched as he did so and Bradley let go, looking at you with concern.
''What was that?'' He asked, cocking an eyebrow.
''Nothing.'' you mumbled, moving inside with your trash bag.
Bradley followed you and closed the back door, ''No, you flinched. Did I hurt you?''
''No, it wasn't you. I hurt my arm a few years ago, it still gives me hassle sometimes.'' you said, placing some plates in the dishwasher.
''It shouldn't still be hurting you, what did you do to it?'' Bradley asked as he began to help you.
''Broke it.'' you mumbled.
Bradley stood suddenly, staring at you in shock.
''Birdy, you're like the least athletic person I know, and you're not exactly clumsy, how did you break your arm?'' He let out an exasperated chuckle.
You lifted your eyes for a second but struggled to maintain eye contact with Bradley. ''I don't really wanna talk about it, Brad.'' you mumbled under your breath as you closed the dishwasher and moved to the sink to wash your hands.
''Y/N...'' Bradleys voice was stern, serious now, and the use of your name had your back up instantly. You shot him a glare and his face softened.
''Please?''
You sighed, drying your hands.
''I didn't break it, someone else did.'' you said simply, turning to face Bradley, your back against the counter top.
''What do you mean?''
You took a deep breath, ''Can you grab me a beer?''
Bradley nodded and walked to the fridge, fishing out two cold ones and opening them before handing you one.
You took a moment to collect your thoughts, and then you began.
''After college, I met someone. We worked together and things were going really well, so eventually I moved in with him.'' You took a swig of beer and continued.
''Things were good for a long time after I moved in, we were even getting quite serious, but a little while into the relationship he began to change.'' Your eyes flicked to Bradley for a second, unsure if you should go on, but his expression was soft and you continued.
''It was really little things at first, I wouldn't even really call them red flags, just small things like if I didn't hang his clothes in the right order in his wardrobe, he'd get annoyed, or if a book didn't go back in the exact same spot on the shelf, he'd huff about it. Like I said, so miniscule I really didn't think anything of it.''
Bradley was already beginning to see where your story was going, and he drew in a sharp breath as he watched you cautiously, crossing his arms over his chest.
''Anyway, so we'd been living together a while at this point, and he started to really lose it with the little things. This one time, he accused me of flirting with his best friend when I laughed at his terrible joke - mind you, we were at his friends house, and his wife was right there, she was laughing, I didn’t wanna be rude, but the car ride home was not fun.'' You forced a laugh, realising how pathetic you must have sounded, but you hadn't recognised it as abuse at the time.
Bradley was now biting his thumb nail as he listened.
''There were times where he'd take my phone while I was in the shower, and he'd interrogate me about messages I'd sent my family, and why I wasn't mentioning him enough. He asked me who you were and said he didn't like that I was so comfortable with you. This was even after we fell out of touch for the most part. I didn't realise until a little while after, but he'd blocked your number and deleted it from my phone.'' you stopped for another swig of beer.
Bradley was frowning now, suddenly understanding why he was unable to reach you.
''I wanted to reach out to you another way, any other way, but I kept putting it off for the fear he’d find out and explode. It was stuff like that for a long time, but he started to realise the verbal shit didn't affect me anymore, and then that's when things really started getting bad.'' you held up your wrist and offered Bradley a sad smile.
''What did he do to you, Birdy?'' Bradley asked as he dropped his arm to his side, his eyes dark and his jaw set.
''This particular one was from being thrown down the stairs. I called him a narcissist.'' You chuckled.
Bradley rubbed the back of his head, as he paced around the kitchen.
''What else?'' He asked shortly.
''It doesn't matter, he's been out of my life a long time.'' You were tired of talking about Jacob, it drained you even still.
Bradley spun around and gave you an exasperated look, ''Of course it fucking matters, because I'm gonna need to state my reasons in court after I kill him.'' he growled as he crossed over to you a little too quickly, a little too angrily, and you flinched again.
Bradley stopped dead in his tracks and his face immediately softened.
''No, no I'm so sorry, Birdy I would never hurt you.'' he whispered, moving slower now, more carefully. Your chest felt tight and you took a deep breath as you nodded.
''No I know. Talking about him… it’s just… Brad I trust you more than anyone, even after all these years.” You whispered as you closed the small gap between you, placing a hand on his broad chest. You felt his heart thrumming violently against his chest.
You looked up to meet his eyes, they were soft for you but his jaw was still set and clenched with anger. Bradley had a hard time letting go when something pissed him off, and today was just one thing after another.
Your other hand moved up to his face and you stroked his jaw with your thumb, easing him. Bradley let out a deep sigh as his whole body relaxed.
“About earlier…” you started, but Bradley shook his head and cut you off.
“Don’t you dare say you regret any of it, please.” He chuckled.
“I don’t, but I do think we need to talk… we’ve sort of missed a lot of each others lives.”
Bradley nodded, dipping his head to capture your lips in a soft, gentle kiss.
“Yeah, we have all night to ourselves now, we can take it slow.”

Past:
“You’ve reached Bradley Bradshaw, I can’t come to the phone right now, if it’s important leave a message and I’ll get right back to ya.” The line beeped and you sighed.
“Hey Brad, it’s me, again. I guess you're busy right now, I just miss you so gimme a call when you can. Say hi to your mom for me too please.” You hung up and put your phone back in its holder. You lay back down against your bed and sighed.
You'd been in your new town for a little over a month, and you were really struggling without Bradley around.
You made it a nightly routine to call one another before bed, but the last week had been a bit hit and miss. Since you moved Bradley had been spending more of his days with Michelle to pass the time, and as a result had been invited to more parties, gradually becoming one of the popular kids.
He was struggling to find time to call you when you were free and you kept missing one another. The time difference didn't help, when he eventually got home most nights, you'd already been asleep for hours.
There were times when you'd just call Carole to talk for a while, catching up on anything missed. She told you that Bradley was struggling with your absence, but you found that hard to believe now as you lay in bed, having not spoken to Bradley for the last week.
You huffed as the boredom became too much, and almost as if the universe had read your mind, the doorbell rang.
You heard your mom get up from her chair, the familiar sound of her heavy book landing on the coffee table, and she crossed over the hallway to answer the door.
You heard her muffled voice speaking to whoever was at the door, and then you heard her calling your name.
You got up and made your way to the front door, it was blocking the person from view, but your mom smiled at you as you approached.
''Hey sweetheart, you have a visitor.''
Your heart soared, had Bradley come to see you? Was that why he wasn't answering your calls. You grinned and pulled the door open further.
Your smile dropped.
''Hiya, I noticed you moved in a while back, I've been meaning to stop by and introduce myself, I'm Gabby.'' the pretty blond girl smiled as she stuck out her hand, a soccer ball tucked under her other arm.
''Hi, I'm Y/N.'' You forced a smile, but your disappointment was evident.
''Gabby was wondering if you wanted to hang out? You've been cooped up in that room for weeks, why don't you go out and explore the town?'' Your mom suggested, pushing you slightly out the door.
''Oh, I'm waiting for a call from-''
''If he calls I'll give you the message, honey. Go out and have fun.'' she raised her eyebrows at you and gave you an insistent look.
You nodded, and smiled at Gabby again. ''Okay, yeah that sounds fun.''
''Do you like soccer?'' Gabby asked as you both walked down the little street.
''Not really, I'm not into sports much. Prefer reading, or painting.'' you chuckled awkwardly.
''No problem! I'm not very good at arty stuff, but I'm sure we can find something to do. Wanna go to the mall?'' She smiled, bouncing ahead of you and throwing her soccer ball into her own front garden.
You laughed, you liked her already, ''Yeah, okay that sounds fun.''

Present:
You'd fallen asleep on Bradley's chest after talking for hours. You delved into the darker side of life after ending things with Jacob.
You told Bradley how you had called the cops on Jacob after he'd pinned you to the ground by your throat one night because you'd argued about something miniscule and you'd actually voiced your opinion for once
What you hadn't realised is that small towns have cliques, and no matter how long you live in a small town for, if you didn't grow up there, you'll never truly be one of them.
It just so happened the chief of police was Jacob's best friend growing up and they'd remained close. The incident had been swept under the rug and after that rumours spread about you to every corner of the town.
You couldn't go grocery shopping without eyes following you, the odd 'whore' or 'liar' being thrown at you as you walked down the streets.
You thought it would eventually calm down, but over the next few years things only escalated and became unbearable when Gabby moved to New York.
When she had told you about the vacancy at her school, you jumped at the opportunity to escape.
''So you've literally only just escaped that hell?'' Bradley had asked. You nodded, craning your head up to look at him from where you lay under his protective arm on the sofa.
''And then I came along and probably just added confusion to all the pain.'' He mumbled.
You chuckled, ''No, actually I think this is exactly what I needed.''
You must have dozed off shortly after, because the next thing you knew you were coming to with Bradley snoring softly above you, his lips pouted perfectly. You admired how beautiful he was for a moment before you carefully got up to use the bathroom.
You gently padded down the hallway and closed the bathroom door, taking a moment to yourself to really think about the absolute whirl wind that was the last 24 hours. You looked at yourself in the mirror and realised how much of a mess you looked, lips swollen from the night of stolen kisses, skin raw from his rough, calloused hands wrapping around your neck. You shivered, and turned the shower on.
Bradley awoke not long after to the sound of the running shower, and an empty arm. He sat up and stretched, checking the time. 4:23am.
He chuckled, only you would shower at this time of night because you felt uncomfortable.
He got up and walked to the bathroom, pressing his ear against the door to make sure you were okay.
The sound he heard surprised him more than it should have.
''Bradley...'' you moaned softly, almost inaudibly.
His eyes widened and he gulped, but pressed his ear closer.
''Yes, oh my god.'' your voice was small, barely a whisper. ''Fuck.''
He wasn't sure what possessed him, but before he could stop himself, he was opening the bathroom door quietly.
You hadn't heard him yet, but Bradley could see your faint silhouette through the shower curtain, your hand pressed against the wall to support you as you touched yourself and moaned his name. Even through the curtain he could tell you looked incredible.
Bradley peeled off his shirt, and then his pants and underwear, and the sound alerted you to his presence. You gasped as you spun around, embarrassed and speechless as Bradley pulled back the curtain and you took in his nude form.
He was a god.
You tried desperately to cover yourself, but Bradley just shook his head, and stepped into the shower, his eye contact unfaltering as he backed you up against the cold tile wall. His right hand came to rest on the wall above you as his left cupped your wet face, his thumb skimming your bottom lip.
You moaned as he kissed you, his hand moving to your waist, squeezing you desperately.
You struggled to believe this was the same lanky boy from your childhood, as you felt his hard member press up against you. You shivered against him and Bradley pressed his toned body up against yours, your skin flush with his as you wrapped an arm around his neck and tangled your fingers in his wet hair.
The embarrassment from being caught gradually vanished and turned into pure need. Your tongues tangled desperately as Bradley grabbed your thigh and pulled your leg up to wrap around his waist, grinding gently against you.
You gasped, and bucked your hips for more. He grabbed your other leg and hoisted you up against the wall. You wrapped around him as your teeth tugged at his bottom lip. Bradley surged in for another kiss, hungrier this time, and a hand slid from your thigh up over the sensitive skin of your stomach, where he pinned you in place.
''I love you.'' he growled as his other hand moved in between your thighs, expert fingers slid through your soaking lips, his thumb finding your sensitive bundle of nerves and he began to draw rough circles.
You threw your head back, your chest heaving. ''I love you.'' You whined, ''More.'' you demanded. Bradley did as he was instructed, his index finger slipping inside of you. His fingers were so big the stretch from one alone was enough to get you to moan, but when his middle finger entered and he began to pump, you cried out and buried your face in his neck.
Your legs tightened around his waist as he mumbled praises in your ear, and before long you were close to coming undone.
''I need you.'' you cried, and Bradley stopped. He slowly withdrew his fingers, sucking them clean and moaning at your taste before he kissed you again, and you felt his tip slide into you.
This feeling was entirely something else. Something bigger and better than anything you'd experienced in life up until this point, and as he pushed into you, he grunted loudly and your body convulsed at the pure pleasure and adrenaline you felt at being truly connected to Bradley there and then. Bradley held you like a small, fragile thing in his arms as you adjusted to his size, and when you nodded that it was okay to move, Bradley started slowly, gently, his jaw slack and muttering 'fuck' over and over as your tight walls enveloped him.
You bucked into him and his rhythm sped up, as his lips attached to your neck and he sucked bright bruises into your skin to muffle his ungodly groans.
His touch was electric, like fire engulfing your entire body, but you needed more, you had never needed anything like you needed him in that moment.
You rocked together against the wall until the hot water began to turn cold, and goosebumps covered your skin, but still you didn't care, nothing could sully this incredible feeling as your bodies pressed impossibly closer, wet noises growing louder, moans and whimpers and curses echoing through the small room.
''I fucking love you, I'll always fucking love you.'' Bradley grunted into your neck, and your eyes rolled. Your body shook as you fell apart in his arms, the coil snapping and sending you into rolling waves of pleasure like nothing you'd ever felt before.
You screamed his name as you tightened around him, and Bradley couldn't hold on any longer. He bit down on your shoulder as his thrusts became sloppy and rough, his hand gripping the flesh of your ass as he pushed impossibly further in, spilling his pearlescent seed inside you with a loud grunt.
Your body went limp in his arms as your energy was all spent, and Bradley held you up against the wall for a long time, peppering soft, sweet kisses along your face and lips.
You chuckled and Bradley grinned that perfect grin.
''I think you're going to have to carry me out of here, Bradshaw.''

Past:
You and Bradley didn't speak for a few days after your conversation at the beach, but you felt your cold shoulder beginning to fade when Bradley showed up at your door with a bunch of daisies in his hand, which he thrust at you as soon as you opened the door.
''What are these for?'' you asked.
''For whatever I did to piss you off, I'm sorry.'' he said genuinely, and it broke your heart that you'd made him think he'd actually done something wrong.
''It wasn't you, Bradley, I'm sorry for the way I acted.'' You apologised softly.
Bradley grinned and softly punched your shoulder, ''Besties again?''
You chuckled, ''Never stopped, Bradshaw.''
Things went mostly back to normal after that, with Bradley still spending most of his time with you. There was the odd occasion Michelle would call Bradley and ask to meet up, where he'd disappear for a while, only to reappear at your house the next day as if he never left.
Bradley didn't say much about Michelle around you, obviously sensing your dislike for her, but it became more and more obvious that they were getting closer and closer to doing the deed, when Carole let slip one night that Bradley had a romantic date planned for her.
You wanted to be sick at the thought, but instead you smiled at her and mumbled 'That's nice, hope you two have a good time.' as Bradley blushed a bright shade of crimson, you both going back to the lovely dinner Carole had cooked for you.
''So, what's this date you've told me nothing about?'' you chuckled as Bradley walked you home that evening, the cool air wafting his poofy dark hair over his eyes. He smoothed his hair back and chuckled awkwardly.
''It's nothing, just dinner. A picnic actually, up on the hill.''
''Are you gonna... you know?''
''Gosh I dunno, Birdy, what's with the interrogation?'' he flushed.
You were both quiet for a moment, until you neared your front lawn and looked up at him, ''For what its worth, I don't think she's right for you. I think you can do better, Rooster.''
Bradley was about to speak, when your dad walked outside.
''Ah, I'm glad you're both here. Can you two come inside for a second, we need to talk.'' your dad said sombrely, and you could see your mother in the hallway, her eyebrows creased.
''What is it, dad?'' you asked as you walked towards him.
''Just come inside.''

Present:
Your most important things were packed in a suitcase, the rest still in your apartment. You'd signed a year lease so you thought at the very least if things panned out, you could use it as a storage unit until things were set up in California.
The plane landed and your stomach was in knots. You hadn't told Bradley you were coming yet, and as you left the airport and got in a cab, you suddenly wondered if this was such a good idea.
It was too late to turn back when you decided it was, in fact, a very bad idea, because you were already pulling up outside of Bradleys bungalow. You took a deep breath as you paid the driver, and you swallowed down the nerves as you took your suitcase out of the trunk. You thought you were going to vomit as you walked up to the front door and knocked.
You waited for what felt like an agonisingly long time, but when the door finally swung open, you knew you'd made the right decision.
''Birdy?'' Bradley breathed in disbelief, his hands cupping his mouth as his eyes scanned your face.
''Hope that invitation is still valid.'' you joked sheepishly.
Bradley lunged forwards and swept you up in his big burly arms, you dangled helplessly like a doll in an overly early childs hands, and you chuckled as he buried his face in your neck.
When he finally put you down, you grinned up at him, and noticed his Adams Apple bobbing, he was trying not to cry.
''Oh, you big softie.'' you punched his shoulder and he chuckled, rubbing his eyes.
''I just can't believe you're here. I didn't think you'd come.''
''Well, are you gonna make me live out here on the porch or can I come in?'' you teased.
''Right! Come in, I have a room for you.'' Bradley stepped to the side and grabbed your suitcase. He gave you a quick tour of the little bungalow that you thought seemed too small for a man of his stature, and lastly to the bedroom he'd prepared, just in case you came.
''Wow, Brad, I thought you said you didn't think I was coming?'' you breathed. The room was already set up, pink floral duvet covers and fluffy pillows awaited you, a poster of your favourite boy band in school, and the canvas you'd painted with Bradley stood pride and centre on the wall.
''I know, but I hoped.'' he said simply.
You looked up at him and grabbed his arm, pulling him down to your height. You planted a soft kiss on his cheek and then wrapped your arms around his neck.
''Thank you.'' you whispered as you hugged him.
''Anything for my lil Bird.''
It took a while for you to let go, but when you did Bradley left you to unpack and relax for a while.
You walked around your room and smiled, it was simple and mostly empty, but it had a sense of home that your apartment in New York didn't have.
You sat on the bed and breathed in the smell of sea air wafting in through your windows.
Once you'd unpacked and changed into a more summery dress, you met Bradley in the lounge, the sound of a football match roaring through the speakers. Bradley turned the tv off as you walked in, smiling at you.
''California suits you.'' he grinned.
You swished your dress from side to side, ''Yeah, I think so too.'' you winked.
''How do you feel about meeting some of my friends?'' Bradley asked, as he stood and met you at the centre of the room. He stood over you, tauntingly close, the smell of his cologne teasing your nostrils.
''You mean that blond guy, Jake?'' you scrunched up your nose.
''There are others, I promise.'' he chuckled, cupping your face in both of his huge hands. He stared down at you so intently, for a moment you forgot where you were.
''Why are you looking at me like I'm not real?'' you breathed out a soft, awkward laugh.
''Because I'm scared you're not and I'm gonna wake up without you.'' he said earnestly. Your heart thudded against your chest as his face grew closer, his eyes dipping to your lips.
Knock Knock Knock
Bradleys front door suddenly interrupted you, and you both stepped back, looking at each other for a moment, before Bradley went to answer it.
''I may have texted the group that you're here, I think they took that as an invitation to come and meet you.'' he said apologetically. You laughed as he opened the door and 5 people walked in.
''Hello again little lady.'' Jake, the only one you recognised, grinned at you, toothpick between his teeth.
''Hi, Jake.'' you smiled politely back.
Bradley introduced you to the others as they filtered in, each toting various drinks and bags of snacks.
''This is Nat, Bob, Reuben, and Javy. You'll meet Mickey at some point but he's on his honeymoon at the moment.''
You said hello to everyone, and Nat pulled you in for a hug. She reminded you a lot of Gabby, and you suddenly remembered you needed to give her a call later.
''It's so great to finally meet you, Rooster has been talking about you for years!'' Nat laughed.
''Great to meet you too! Years, huh?'' you shot Bradley a quizzical glance, and he just rolled his eyes.
You all filtered out into the little back yard, where Jake and Javy fired up the grill as everyone got to know you, drinks at hand and before long laughter filling the little yard.
Bradley made his way over to where you and Bob were talking, slinking an arm casually over your shoulder as he took a swig of beer. He joined in the conversation and didn't notice as someone new walked out the back door.
Bob noticed first, and tapped Bradley on the shoulder, his eyes shooting over to the new comer to alert Bradley.
''Hi all!'' she chirped, ''The door was open, hope you don't mind if I join?''
Bradley groaned, moving his arm off of your shoulder as he turned to face her.
''Hey, Alice. Sorry I was gonna call you.'' he said awkwardly as he walked over to the leggy blond.
''Alice, this is my best friend, Y/N.'' He said introducing you with a grin.
And then half heartedly and with a sheepish look, he turned to look at you, ''Y/N, this is Alice... my girlfriend.''

“What do you mean? Why can’t you just do that job here?” You demanded.
You were sitting in your living room across from your parents, Bradley was next to you with his face in his hands.
“There isn’t a position here for me, Y/N. This job is going to sort out so much debt for us-“ your mom nudged your dad and shook her head to stop him from talking.
“Are we having money problems?” You asked softly.
Bradley lifted his head and looked around with furrowed eyebrows.
Your dad sighed, looked at your mom and she took over, “We’re fine, but we are struggling. This job is our only choice. I’m sorry, honey. I know it’s going to be difficult, but Bradley can come visit whenever and you can stay with them during summer vacation.”
Your parents left you shell shocked in your living room with Bradley, who just looked at you with wide, watery eyes.
“Well, I guess that’s it then…” you mumbled.
“No, it can’t be. I haven’t planned for a life without you, what am I supposed to do when you’re gone?” Bradley suddenly exploded, standing to his feet so quickly it startled you.
He began to pace, “I’m gonna… I’m gonna be stuck with Michelle as my only source of company.” He ranted.
“Isn’t that what you want?” You asked softly.
Bradley looked at you like you’d just asked the most stupid question ever, “No! God no! She’s boring, and stuck up, and rude, when I’m with her all I can think about is getting out.”
“Then why are you with her?” You shook your head in exasperation.
“Because… you don’t get it, Birdy. I’m the only one in my grade that hasn’t… you know. I needed someone experienced who I could do it with.” He groaned, sitting back down and putting his hands over his face.
“Brad, why didn’t you tell me that’s the only reason? If you’re gonna lose your… you know, it should be with someone you actually care about.” You said gently, placing a hand on the top of his arm. He lowered his hands and looked at you for a while.
Bradley sighed, “The only person in this whole damn town I care about is you.”
You were about to respond when your brother walked into the room and wailed dramatically.
“Have you heard the news? Our lives are over!”
—————————————
Present:
“Girlfriend? Oh, hi, nice to meet you.” Your voice was small and shaky, and you had to clear your throat.
Bob noticed the awkward tension and was the first one to realise what was happening.
“Oh my god! Bradley talks about you non stop! So nice to finally meet you, girl!” Alice squealed, hugging you.
Bob cleared his throat, “Y/N, do you mind helping me grab some of the food from the kitchen?” Bob asked, looking you in the eye and giving you a signal.
You nodded and excused yourself, and as soon as you were in the kitchen, you let out a long shaky breath, tears prickling your eyes. You had just made a horrible mistake coming here.
“Hey, are you okay?” Bob asked, rubbing your back comfortingly.
“Yep. I just… I need to call someone. Excuse me.” You rushed off to your bedroom and closed the door, pressing your back up against it as you breathed through the sudden panic.
You found your phone on the nightstand and dialled Gabby’s number.
As soon as she answered, you began to sob uncontrollably.
“Y/N! What’s going on, can you breathe for me please?” She called over the phone.
You attempted to pull in a few short breaths until you were calm enough to speak.
“I’m such an idiot!” You cried.
“Why? What’s happening? You scared me when you left this morning.”
“I… I went to California. Bradley asked me to, so I did, I thought he wanted me here because he felt the same.” You sniffled.
There was a brief silence on the other end, “He doesn’t?” She sounded surprised.
“He has a girlfriend, Gabs, one he never told me about.”
“Ohhh, fuck. Have you met her?”
“Yeah, just now. I was so blindsided I must have come across as rude. I can’t believe I thought Bradley and I had any future, or that he loved me the way I love him. I’ve loved him for what feels like my whole life, Gabs, when am I going to realise I can’t have him?” You wept.
Suddenly the door creaked, and you turned around suddenly to face Bradley, who stood in the doorway with his mouth slightly ajar and his eyebrows furrowed, blinking rapidly as tears threatened to spill over.
“Oh my god.” You whispered. “Gabby I have to go.” You hung up and dropped your phone on the bed.
“Brad-“
He held up a hand to shush you, and edged into the room, closing the door behind him.
“Don’t speak.” He said as he crossed the room. He stood over you and a large hand came up to thread through your hair and cup your cheek.
A tear dropped down your face as you looked up at him, your lip quivering.
“Did you mean what you just said?” Bradley whispered, closing his eyes as his forehead came to rest against yours, your lips inches apart, his warm breath on your skin.
“Yes.” you croaked out. And that’s all you needed to say, because Bradley’s lips came crashing down on yours, taking your breath away. The room spun as your eyes widened, and then gradually fluttered shut.
His other hand cradled the back of your neck as he deepened the kiss, moaning into your lips.
The tears fell faster now as your heart felt as if it was exploding, the fireworks inside you turning your skin alight. You grabbed a fistful of Bradley’s shirt, holding on for dear life as the feeling you’d waited decades for was finally washing over you, better than you'd ever imagined, buckling your knees from underneath you.
Bradley’s hand moved from the back of your head to your lower back and he pulled you into him, holding you up, and still it wasn’t enough, you wanted more, desperate for more, hungry for more, but your conscious suddenly rocked through you like a bolt of lightning and you pushed against Bradley’s chest. You broke away from him with a gasp as you fought for breath. Your hand moved up to your chest to soothe the thrumming inside as you panted.
Bradley looked at you with a confused, longing expression, fighting for his own breath.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” Bradley demanded, his face flushed and lips beautifully swollen.
You bit your lip and shook your head before you breathed a laugh, “Would it have made a difference?”
“Yes, Birdy, it would have made all the difference.” He nodded, hands on his hips as he contemplated your words.
“Why didn’t you tell me you had a girlfriend before I flew out here?” You asked him sadly.
“I… I didn’t think it mattered. I didn’t know you felt that way.” He looked at his feet.
You shook your head again as you sighed, “I’ve loved you since that stupid moustache began to grow, Brad. In fact I think I loved you the second you saved me on my first day of school.” You breathed.
Bradley’s eyes shot up to meet yours, his bottom lip wobbled as he nodded, “Yeah, that’s about the same time I fell in love with you, too, Birdy.”
You opened your mouth to speak but a sharp knock rasped against your bedroom door and you jumped. The door opened and Bob poked his head through.
“Uhm… you guys should probably come outside.”

Past:
Bradley played with your hair as you fell asleep that night, humming to you until you were breathing soft snores in his ear. At one point you’d rolled over on your side and your arm came to rest across his torso.
Bradley smiled and traced patterns up and down your arm until he eventually dozed off too.
When the morning came and the sunlight blinded you, you stretched and rolled over into an upright position.
You turned back to look for Bradley but he was already gone. You groaned and shuffled out of bed and down the stairs.
Your mom was in the kitchen scrambling eggs.
“Morning my love, did you sleep okay?” She cooed, you gave her a side hug and yawned.
“Yeah, thanks mom, you?”
“Yeah not too bad, your dad snored a lot though.”
You laughed a breath through your nose, and walked into the dining room and stopped in your tracks.
“Morning sleepy head.” Bradley grinned, his hands behind his head as he stretched at your dining table, his dark hair a mess.
You forced a surprised smile down, he hadn’t left you after all.
“Morning.” You mumbled.
“Bradley and I are going to hit the hardware store after breakfast, but then we were thinking it might be fun to go down to the beach, how do you feel about that?” Your dad asked, getting up and kissing the top of your frizzy head, before moving to the kitchen to help your mom with breakfast.
“I wanna go to the beach!” Your little sister enthused, jumping up from her seat at the table and running after your dad.
“Yeah that sounds fun.” You grinned. Sitting down across from Bradley, you tried your best to act normal, but inside you a war of emotions raged.
On one hand, you desperately longed to hold onto your perfect friendship, you knew not everyone was lucky enough to have a best friend they felt as comfortable with as you did. But on the other hand, with each passing day your longing for him only grew stronger. You began to notice how long his eyelashes were, and that his teenage lankiness began to fill out into muscles, and his height suddenly began to suit him.
You were pulled from your thoughts as Bradley plopped a hand down in front of you on the table.
“Hey, I was thinking we could dig out my old bodyboards in the garage and practice skim boarding again.” He said with a grin.
You groaned, remembering how hard you wiped out the last time you tried, and how your breath was knocked out of you.
“No way, I suck.” You grimaced.
“Oh come on, how are you gonna get better if you don’t practice? Plus I’ll hold your hand this time.”
You blushed and looked down at your hands.
“Yeah okay, I guess I could try again.”
When you looked back up, you were struck with the gentle affection in Bradley’s eyes, as he beamed a cheeky grin at you.
———————————————
Present:
You’d just finished packing away your 4th box, when there was a knock on your door. So soft and faint you barely heard it.
You walked over to the door and opened it a crack.
“What am I, your drug dealer? Let me in, woman.” Gabby groaned behind her giant sunglasses, 2 large cups of coffee and a bag of pastries in her hands. She stood hunched over, like she would break if she didn’t find a sofa soon.
You threw the door open and she stumbled in, thrusting the drinks and food in your arms and collapsing on your sofa with a loud groan.
“Woah, you look worse than I feel. I thought you would be ok, I drank way more than you did.” You laughed.
“I may have stopped at a bar on the way home, met a guy, had a few more, was fun. But I am dying.” She breathed.
“So you decided to get out of bed, travel halfway across town, pick up coffee and then climb 5 flights of stairs to come here?” You raised your eyebrows at her.
“Elevators fixed, but yes. I need my best girl while I die. Plus… the guy I met is still at my apartment.” She groaned.
You laughed and sat down next to her, handing her the latte she’d ordered and a pain au chocolat, and gave her a run down of your night.
“Wait wait wait, so you’re telling me the boy you were madly in love with in high school - now a total hunk by the way, wow - came back to your apartment, and you didn’t fuck?” Gabby lifted her sunglasses to look at you like you were losing your mind.
“Gabs it’s the first time we’ve seen each other in well over a decade, and we had a lot of catching up to do. Plus, I highly doubt he feels that way about me.”
“But… you do still have feelings don’t you? I could see the way you looked at him in the club. Your eyes were practically heart shaped. And I know a slack jaw when I see one, he definitely had one of those when he saw you.”
You chuckled, “Uhm… I dunno. I mean he’s different now. Not the boy I fell in love with… but he’s better, somehow. He’s really grown up.”
“Hmmm yeah I bet he’s grown in other places too.” She stretched and yawned. “I’m climbing into bed. Join me?” She pleaded.
“Yeah, go pick a movie and I’ll be in soon.” You shooed Gabby off to your bedroom and got up to fish out some clean clothes. You were still in your dress from last night and the lace was beginning to make you itchy.
You opened up a box you thought your pj’s would be in and pulled out a wad of old clothes. Something small and metallic clanked to the floor.
You bent down and held the chain up to the light, a small inscribed ring dangling in front of you.
You laughed in surprise as you inspected it. You hadn’t seen this since you met Jacob, and it had suddenly gone missing from your nightstand. The ring Bradley had given you when he found out you were moving, the one that was identical to the ring he’d had made for himself, so you’d always remember one another and the friendship you held so close to your heart.
You pouted and let out another soft laugh as you read the inscription.
‘B&B ~ When The Stars Align We’ll Reunite’
You had thought it was silly when you were younger, a line from Bradley’s favourite book, one you’d constantly teased him for reading, but now you couldn’t help but marvel at the accuracy and timing.
It’s like Bradley knew, deep down, that you’d find a way back to one another again some day.

Past:
You stepped onto the hot sand and shielded the sun from your eyes as you looked towards the packed shore.
Bradley sidled up next to you and put an arm around your shoulder. “Ready to wipe out?” He joked.
You looked up at him with a look of mock disgust, “You do realise I’m already hesitant to make a fool of myself in front of all these people, right?”
Bradley grinned and put you in a headlock, you squealed and struggled as he ruffled your hair again.
You pulled away and glared at him, “That’s it, you are SO dead!”
Bradley stuck out his tongue and you chased after him, eventually catching up when he stopped for a second and jumping onto his back. You proceeded you ruffle up his hair in revenge.
“That doesn’t bother me as much as it bothers you.” He pointed out, you sighed, and linked your arms around his neck. Bradley gave you a piggyback as he followed your parents and siblings to an empty spot on the sand.
“Brad! Hey Brad!” An annoyingly cool voice called from the spot next to it.
“Oh. Hi Michelle.” He responded coldly, gripping your legs around his waist tighter. You frowned as you watched her approach, and she barely acknowledged your presence.
Bradley gently put you down on the sand.
“Look, I was hoping we could talk… about last night.” Michelle purred, you could tell she was trying to act sorry, but it wasn’t very convincing.
“I’m a little busy right now.” Bradley said.
“Please? I’ll just be a few minutes, promise.” She fluttered her long eyelashes and Bradley sighed.
“Okay, be right back, Birdy.” And before you knew it they were both walking down the beach and away from you.
You lay out your beach towel and sat down, stretching your legs out to catch some sun. Your mom sat down next to you and fished your book out of her bag, which you took happily.
''Who's the girl?'' your mom asked.
''No one important, just one of the popular girls from school.'' You mumbled as you opened your book.
''Does Bradley like her?''
''What do you think, mom? She looks about 25 with those boobs, what guy wouldn't?''
Your mom chuckled, smoothing sunscreen on her legs. ''He doesn't look at her the same way he looks at you, though.''
You looked over at your mom quizzically, ''What? Like a little sister?'' you laughed, masking your slightly piqued interest.
''That's not what we see. Bradley's a good kid, Y/N, and we know he'd take good care of you if you were... more than friends.''
''Ew, gross mom. No we're just friends, that's all we'll ever be.'' you pretended to be grossed out at the idea as you went back to your book, but your eyes kept flickering back to the shoreline to try and find Bradley.
''Mhmm, sure honey, if that's how you feel.'' but your parents knew better.
————————————
Present:
You and Gabby spent the rest of the day in bed, alternating between movies, sleep and running to the bathroom to upheave the copious amounts of alcohol that burnt away at your stomach linings.
Eventually Gabby felt well enough to brave her apartment, and said goodnight to you. You closed the door behind her and sighed, the apartment feeling empty and cold.
You decided to take a shower and wash away the rest of the icky hangover, and you'd then order pizza or tacos while you watched another movie.
You climbed into the shower and the hot water flowed down your aching body. Your muscles and your feet hated you for the ordeal you'd put them through, and you moaned at the feeling of the water relaxing you.
You tried to clear your mind, but one thought kept making its way back to you over and over again. Bradley.
You kept thinking about his big arms as he hovered over you in the bar, and his thick, veiny neck. You thought somehow his lips looked more plump, fuller, and wondered what it would feel like to kiss them, or how his beefy hands would feel running down your body.
Suddenly there was a loud knock on your door that you could hear even under the running shower, and you gasped, your dirty thoughts rudely interrupted. You were sure it was Gabby, maybe she'd forgotten something or realised her date from last night was still in her apartment and she didn't want to deal with the situation.
You groaned and wrapped a towel around you, not even bothering to dry off properly as you padded towards the living room and to the door. You threw the door open.
''Gabs if you're about to ask me to get rid of-''
It wasn't Gabby.
''Woah, sorry Birdy.'' Bradley stood with his arm propped up against the door frame, taking in your wet form. He was wearing a suit and loosened tie, and stank of whiskey. ''Didn't mean to interrupt.' He mumbled.
You stepped back so he could come in, ''Brad, what are you doing here?'' you asked, ''Aren't you meant to be at the reception right about now?''
Bradley stumbled inside, ''Yeah, but it's the funniest thing, I couldn't enjoy myself.''
''Why not? Smells like you've been having a great time.'' you chuckled as you disappeared into the bathroom to turn off the shower. Bradley followed you, slightly tipsy but not as bad as the night before.
''I couldn't stop thinking about you.'' He stated, leaning against the door frame.
You turned to face him, gripping the towel tightly, suddenly conscious of the thin layer being the only thing protecting the last part of you Bradley had never seen before.
''What do you mean?''
''I go back to California in the morning, come with me.'' he stated.
You scoffed, walking past him to your bedroom.
''I can't, Bradley. I start my new job tomorrow. I don't think they'll be happy with me taking vacation days so soon.''
''I don't mean vacation, Birdy, I mean move to California with me.'' he said seriously, following you to the bedroom.
You spun round and shot him a look of confusion. ''How drunk are you?''
''I'm not drunk. I've been thinking about this all day, for the last 16 years actually, I have missed you every single day and I want my best friend back.''
''You know I miss you, and I'd love to see you every day like we used to, but we're grown ups now Bradley, we have lives and jobs and I can't just follow you across the country so we can hang out more.'' you huffed, trying to find something to wear.
''Birdy would you just stop for a second? I know you've got this fancy new job, but you never wanted to be a teacher growing up, you wanted to be an artist like your mom, why won't you just do that?'' he crossed over and stood in front of you.
You looked up at him, exasperated, ''You think it's that easy? That I'll paint and be able to just make a living that way? You know it's not, that's why my mom had to get a real job. I can't just follow you on a whim.''
Bradley sighed and shook his head, ''You can stay with me, that way there's no pressure to make money right away.'' he was pleading now, desperate to convince you.
''Bradley, as much as I want to, I can't.'' you said softly this time, turning to fully face him, water dripping from your hair and rolling down your chest. Bradleys eyes followed a drop and he noticed the thing hanging around your neck.
He breathed out a soft chuckle, his fingers softly skimming your collarbone as he picked up the inscribed ring. Goosebumps covered your skin and you fought back a shiver.
''You kept it.'' he breathed.
''Of course.'' you lied, you wouldn't tell him now that you'd actually misplaced it and only found it earlier.
Bradley gently let go of the necklace and reached into his shirt, pulling out a slightly warn, scratched version. His own ring.
You bit back the sudden urge to sob, as you picked the ring up from his fingers, looking at the thing he so clearly wore every day around his neck.
You looked up at Bradley with teary eyes, and he brought a hand up to stroke your hair out of your face.
''Please just think about it, I'll leave you my number and my home address, my door is always open.'' He breathed.
You nodded, ''I'll think about it.''

Past:
Half an hour passed and finally Bradley returned, a grin plastered across his face. He sat down on your towel facing you, moving your legs either side of him as he grinned down at you, your book blocking the sun that threatened to blind you. You moved the book slightly and eyed him suspiciously.
''What?'' you asked, covering your eyes with your book as you continued to read.
''I have a girlfriend.'' Bradley sang, and your heart stopped. You closed your book and sat up on your elbows.
''I repeat, what?''
''Yup, Michelle apologised for ditching last night. She said she really likes me and was just nervous about the whole thing. I'm taking her out tonight.'' He grinned, softly tapping your legs like a set of drums.
''Good for you.'' you rolled your eyes and pulled your legs away, standing up and walking to the waterline.
Bradley got up and jogged after you, ''Why aren't you happy for me?''
''I am happy for you, Bradley, your dream girl is finally yours, congrats.'' you said bitterly.
Bradley rounded you and stopped you from walking any further, ''Is this because you don't like Michelle?''
You pushed passed him, ''No, she's fine. Just don't come crying to me when she breaks your heart.''
You left Bradley standing hurt and confused on the beach as you went for a swim to cool off, you should have pretended to be happier for him, and felt bad for your mood, but Michelle wasn't right for him and you knew she was bad news.
You just hoped Bradley would figure that out for himself before she did any real damage.

Present:
You didn't sleep that night. You spent the entire time tossing and turning, and staring at the piece of paper with Bradleys cell number and address on it.
He was right when he said teaching wasn't your dream, but when your dream was as unrealistic as yours, you had no other choice.
You could either stay in New York and do something meaningful, moulding young minds and making a difference, just allowing the years to pass uneventfully, hopefully find a nice man and forget about Bradley all over again. Or you could follow Bradley, and give your dream a real try, enjoying life to the fullest.
But what if you did go to California, and life wasn't what you'd hoped it would be? What if moving in with him only made your feelings grow stronger, what if you started the whole cycle all over again, of loving him and losing him and having to overcome those dark feelings on your own again. What if you told him how you felt, and he got all weirded out and it ruined things.
What if you lost Gabby through all of this, and were never able to find a job as good as the one you had now.
There were so many 'what ifs' that plagued you as you desperately sought sleep, but by the time the sun came up, you were no closer to making a decision.
You got dressed and made your way to the school, meeting Gabby outside as you'd planned to do, and she looked much fresher than the day before.
''Hey, how did it go with your lodger?'' you joked.
She blew out a tuft of air, and looked at you awkwardly.
''What?'' you chuckled, as you walked together through the school gates.
''Yeah, we're kinda dating now. His name is Mark.'' she fluttered her eyelashes.
''What? You said he was creepy!'' you groaned at her.
Gabby sighed, ''Yeah, I know, but let's be real, it's hard to find any good ones these days. Plus he's not that bad once you get to know him.''
You suddenly stopped in your tracks, unable to move any further. Realisation suddenly dawning over you as you scrunched up your face and groaned.
''What is it?'' Gabby stopped and turned to face you.
''Gabby you're totally right. And I gotta go. I'll explain later.'' you kissed Gabby on the cheek and turned around, running out of the school grounds as quick as you could.
You had a plane to catch.

Present:
You went back inside to let Gabby know you were going to grab a drink with Bradley, and to ask if she wanted you to walk her to a cab.
Bradley followed you to the dance floor.
“Rooster!” A voice rang out from the crowd, and a tall blond man emerged.
“Hangman.” Bradley responded, “I’m gonna shoot off, can you let Mickey know?”
The blond man raised his eyebrow, “Find yourself a little lady?” He looked over Bradley’s shoulder at you as you waited patiently.
“She’s my old best friend, haven’t seen her in years so we’re going somewhere quiet to catch up.” Bradley explained.
“Right, sure.” The blond winked. “Don’t be late tomorrow, Mickey will kill you.” And he turned around to leave.
Bradley faced you with a grimace, “Sorry about him, Jake’s a piece of work.”
“I’m more interested in the part where he called you Rooster. You kept the nickname?” You chuckled.
“Call sign.” Bradley corrected you with a grin.
“Wait… do you mean-“ you were cut off by Gabby barging into you.
“Whoops! Sorry. Are we leaving? I think I’ve had enough for one night.” She breathed, bunching her hair up off of her sweaty neck.
“Actually, yeah Bradley and I are gonna grab a drink and catch up. Can we walk you to a cab?” You asked, wrapping your arm around her waist to steer her towards the exit.
“Much obliged.” She saluted you and you chuckled.
Once Gabby was safely in a cab and on her way home, you turned to smile at Bradley.
“Where to?” You asked.
“I know a place.” He held out his hand and you took it, walking next to him as he gently steered you through the crowds. His hand felt remarkably strong yet so gentle at the same time, like he was gently cupping something he was terrified to break.
“So… call sign huh? That mean you got into the Navy?”
“Yes ma’am. I couldn’t wait to tell you about it… but you changed your number.” He bit the inside of his cheek as he looked at you cautiously.
“Oh… I didn’t.” You looked to the ground awkwardly.
Bradley glanced at you, confused, your number had been disconnected when he’d tried to call you years ago and had been ever since.
You bit your lip, “But that’s a long story, not sure we’ll have time for it tonight. I am sorry I wasn’t there for you when you got to experience that, though.” You felt horrible for missing such a milestone in his life.
Bradley smiled down at you, “I get to share it with you now, don’t I?” He nudged you until you grinned, and then let go of your hand to wrap his arm around your shoulder instead.
“Can’t believe I bumped into you, here of all places.” He mumbled absentmindedly as he walked.
“Yeah that’s fate I guess, Rooster.” You joked, referencing something from your past you always used to tease him about. He’s shot you a playful glare and you chuckled.
He suddenly stopped, “Here we are. I passed this place earlier and weirdly enough, it made me think of you.”
You looked up at the sign and scrunched up your nose, “A Cat Cafe?”
“No.” Bradley laughed, and moved you over to the left slightly, pointing at the sign next to it.
“Oh! An art bar, that’s better Bradshaw, for a moment there I thought you forgot that I’m a dog person.” You chuckled as you walked inside.
Bradley sat you down at a cozy corner booth, and squeezed in next to you as you scanned the menu for their cocktail list and some nibbles.
Your heart began to race as you felt his strong arm rest behind you on the seat as he read the menu over your shoulder. His breath was minty as it wafted over you.
“You think they’ll be serving any food still? It is 2am.” You said looking over at the other tables to distract yourself from your sudden emotional overtake, some of which had food on them, and your stomach growled.
“I’ll go ask, what drink do you want?” Bradley asked as he stood up, his hands propping himself up over you on the table, and you had to fight with all your might not to ogle at the size of his arms and the veins that protruded from his thick neck.
You gulped, “Sex on the beach, please.”
Bradley winked at you, “Whatever you want, Birdy.” And with a cheeky grin, he left to the bar to order.
He left you flushed and breathless, your rapid heartbeat doing little to distract from the sudden growing tension in between your thighs. You gasped to yourself as you realised your feelings were somehow still there.
Sure it didn’t help that Bradley was now a man, like really a man, or that his confidence was bordering on cockiness, but the real Bradley, or the old Bradley you should say, was still there underneath, and glimpses of him kept trickling through, reminding you of why you fell for him in the first place.
You were lost in thought when Bradley got back, jumping as he placed a plate of fries and your drinks on the table. He pulled a small canvas and a mini easel out from under his arm and positioned it on the table, with small tubs of primary colour paints. He pulled out two tiny paintbrushes from his pocket and handed you one as he eyed you up.
“Sorry.” He chuckled, “Care to tell me where you just travelled to… up there.” He gestured to your head and you rolled your eyes.
“Trust me you don’t want to know what goes on up there.”
“Probably for the best, bet it’s all lady stuff.” he said sitting down next to you.
“Ew, only you could make those two words sound gross, Brad.” You flinched.
Bradley chuckled, and you spent the rest of the evening catching up on all the things missed while you were apart, while picking at the fries and painting random squiggles on your canvas every now and then. You purposely left out the section of your life involving Jacob, as that was a story for another time, far too dark for a catch up date.
You learnt that Carole had passed away, and you were suddenly on the verge of tears. You felt so guilty that you never got to say goodbye, and that you weren’t there for Bradley when he needed you most.
“I’m so sorry, I should have been there for you.” You whispered, biting your cheek to stop the tears from falling.
“Hey, it’s okay. How were you supposed to know? She knew you loved her, I told her so many times towards the end.” He reassured you, but even as he did, his voice broke and you could see him swallowing down the lump in his own throat.
You were both sufficiently drunk at this point, Bradley more so, and your conversation had turned deep and emotional. You sat with your legs draped over Bradley’s thighs, while he played absentmindedly with your knees, a habit he’d picked up years ago, a coping mechanism of sorts to distract him from any issues at hand.
The first time he’d done this, you’d been at home watching a scary movie in the living room, and about halfway through Bradley had picked up your legs and put them on his lap. “You have really wobbly knee caps.” He’d commented, distracting himself from the gory scene ahead.
You’d looked at him, confused at the time, but it had come to be a comforting position for the both of you.
“What did you mean, earlier, when you said you didn’t change your number?” Bradley asked suddenly, clearing his throat of the lump.
You drew in a sharp breath, looking down at your hands. “It’s a long story Brad, another time?” You asked.
Bradley nodded, squeezing your calf.
“Should we make a move? Think the suns about to come up and you’ve got a wedding to attend.” You grinned.
“Yup, probably a good idea.” Bradley slurred, and you swung your legs off of him. He stood and immediately swayed, shooting a hand out to steady himself on the table.
“Woah, one too many whiskey sours, me thinks.” He chuckled. You got up and slotted yourself under his arm to steady him.
“Guess so. Let’s get you back to your hotel. Where are you staying?”
Bradley thought for a moment, and then looked down at you confused, “I can’t remember.” He snatched up the canvas and wedged it underneath his other arm.
You groaned. “Can you text that guy you were with earlier? Or do you have a keycard?”
Bradley pouted and shook his head, “Hangman and I are sharing a room, he has the keycard and he’ll be asleep right now. Can I crash at yours? Like old times?” He grinned his boyish grin and fluttered his pretty eyelashes, until you sighed and steered him towards the street.
“Yeah, okay, but a fair warning, I’m living out of boxes right now.”
“I thought you said you lived in an apartment, not in a box?” He slurred again, swaying on the spot as you stood and waited for a cab.
You laughed at his poor attempt at a joke, and patted him on the back. “You’re gonna feel awful tomorrow.”
“I know.” He grinned down at you, but his eyes were so sincere and gentle it made you want to kiss him.
A cab pulled up and you shuffled inside after Bradley. You told the driver your address and sat back.
Bradley was asleep on your shoulder within 2 minutes, and not long after you pulled up outside your building. You paid and thanked the cab driver and shook Bradley awake.
“Hmm?” He mumbled as he came to.
“We’re here.” You said gently, stroking his face to rouse him.
Bradley moaned at the touch and you found yourself having to clench your thighs, the sound vibrated through your entire body.
You managed to get Bradley to follow you, although wobbly, up the 5 flights of stairs, but you cursed the elevator being broken as it was like trying to coax a stubborn child.
Eventually you stumbled through the door and kicked your heels off.
“Home sweet home!” You sighed, eyeing up the mountain of boxes.
“It’s nice, bit crowded but it’ll get there.” Bradley slurred, walking into the kitchen and looking through your fridge. He pulled out a bottle of beer and was about to open it when you charged at him.
“What are you- ouch, what the fuck, Birdy?“
You collided with Bradley and wrangled the beer from his hand.
“Absolutely not!” You held the beer out of reach.
Bradley grinned and tried to swipe for it.
“No! It’s… 5:23am!” You groaned, checking the time on your phone. “You need to sleep or you’ll never make the wedding.”
“I’ll be fine! I don’t wanna sleep yet, we’ve got way too much catching up to do still.” He reached for the beer but you turned your back to him and held it as far out in front of you as you could.
Suddenly two strong arms were wrapping around your midriff and lifting you into the air. You squealed and tried to struggle, but a fit of laughter overtook you, zapping away any strength you held. Bradley smiled at you over your shoulder as he watched you lose yourself like you had when you were teenagers, and a wave of emotion and nostalgia overtook him. He put you down suddenly and turned you around.
Your laughing slowed and you looked up at Bradley, who’s eyes were brimming now.
''Brad are you okay?'' You were suddenly concerned at the sudden change in atmosphere.
Bradley pulled you in for a bear hug, and this time he just held you for a long time.
You rubbed his back soothingly, his fingers now thread in your hair as he held your head in place against his broad chest, his heart racing.
“I’ve really missed you, kid.” He said through a shaky voice.
“I’ve missed you too, Rooster.”

Past:
You walked home with your heels in one hand and the other shielding your eyes as the rain poured down onto you. You were sure it rained so heavily that night because of how heartbroken you felt, and that Mother Nature just wanted to mask your tears with her own.
You burst through your front door and went straight upstairs, dumping your soggy shoes and purse by the door. Your parents turned from the movie they were watching in the living room in surprise.
“Jeez, when I said be home by 11, I meant more like 11:30, not 8:40.” You dad commented.
You slammed your bedroom door.
He looked at your mom who just shrugged. Your dad followed you upstairs, your mom hot on his tail.
“Honey, what happened?” He asked, pushing your door open gently.
“Nothing. I just want to go to bed.” You sniffed, undoing your braid to allow your wet hair to dry.
“Where’s Bradley?” Your mom asked.
“I don’t know and I don’t care.”
You tried to hard sleep that night, but sleep didn’t find you easily. You kept going over the night in your head, trying to figure out where it all went wrong.
Eventually you stopped crying and your sadness turned to anger. You hadn’t even wanted to go in the first place, Bradley had begged you to go, and now you were furious he had.
It was close to midnight when your door creaked open and a sliver of light filtered in.
“Birdy.” Bradley whispered.
Your head shot up off of your tear stained pillow, and you glared at him for a second. “Who let you in?” You demanded.
“Your dad. But not before he gave me a talking to.” He admitted sheepishly. You slammed your head back down on the pillow.
“Birdy I’m so sorry.” He walked in and gently closed the door. “I shouldn’t have doubted you, I’m not really sure what came over me.”
You said nothing, smushing your face further into your pillow to avoid even seeing your best friends face. You were so mad.
You felt the bed dip behind you as Bradley lay down.
“Lil bird, please look at me.”
“I can’t right now.” You huffed.
“Okay, I get that. But at least let me apologise.”
“Don’t bother. You left me there Bradley, after you begged me to go with you, I don’t think apologising is gonna fix this one.” You said as you propped yourself up on your elbows and glared at him.
Bradley suddenly felt the immense guilt of what he had done when he saw how puffy your eyes were from crying.
“I know, I shouldn’t have. I came right back, once I’d calmed down and realised I was being a total idiot, but you were gone already. Sophie’s friend Kate said she overheard Michelle talking to her friends. I know you didn’t do or say anything, I’m sorry I didn’t believe you.”
“You’ve known me for years, Bradley. The fact that it took someone else telling you I wasn’t lying to believe me is a real gut punch.”
“I know, I’m a dick. It’ll never happen again. From now on if you say something, I’ll take your word. I swear.” He stuck out his pinky.
You stared at it and then at him for a moment. He seemed genuinely sorry, and you had missed him in the few hours since you’d last seen him, so you nodded and hooked your pinky in his.
“Fine. But I’m still mad at you.”
Bradley grinned, ruffling your already frizzy hair. You groaned and lay back down.
“Can I sleep over?” He asked, propping his head in his hand as he turned on his side to look at you.
“Only if you stop calling it a sleep over. We’re not kids anymore.” You huffed.
“Okay… can I stay the night?” He asked in a deep voice and wiggled his eyebrows playfully.
“That’s better. You can wear my princess pyjamas.” You joked, finally cracking a smile.
Bradley rolled his eyes, sitting up and peeling off his dress-shirt. “If we’re not kids anymore, I don’t need pyjamas.” He lay back down in just his pants, and you blushed.
You wondered at times like these if he knew how you felt about him, and just enjoyed teasing you.

Present:
The sun filtered in through your curtain-less windows and you groaned. Your hangover hit you as soon as you peeled your eyes open, and you pulled your duvet over your head.
You breathed through the rolling nausea, and squeezed your eyes shut to stop the feeling of the world spinning a little too fast. Suddenly you heard a loud thump outside the room followed by a deep voice mumbling “shit”.
You’d forgotten all about Bradley. You shot up suddenly as the night before came into memory.
You could hear Bradley groan in the living room, as he shuffled around trying to get dressed.
You walked to the living room and watched as Bradley searched frantically for his shirt.
His toned body looked unfairly delicious in the morning light. You bit your lip as you watched.
Bradley noticed you finally, and relief washed over his face. “Oh Birdy, thank god. I can’t find my shirt and I’m so late for the wedding.” He walked over to you and grabbed your hands, pulling you into the living room. “I can’t remember the end of last night.”
“Well, that’ll be the last beer you had.” You raised your eyebrow at him. “Okay let me think.” You pressed your fingers into your temples as you walked around the apartment.
“Okay… so we had a little moment in the kitchen-“ you pointed to where you stood hugging Bradley for what felt like forever.
“Oh did we?” Bradley jiggled his eyebrows.
“Shut up, not like that Bradshaw.” You shot back and rolled your eyes.
You kept walking, your eyes scanning the boxes and floor space.
“And theeeen… you gave me a piggy back ride to… the bedroom?” You couldn’t recall why. You walked back to the bedroom with Bradley hot on your tail.
Bradley’s shirt lay on the floor next to your bed, and you picked it up and handed it to him.
“Thanks, Birdy.” Bradley said sincerely. He took a moment to put his shirt back on and then gave you a sad smile. “I guess I better get going. Will I see you again?”
You suddenly felt a lump in the back of your throat, and swallowed it down as best you could before you nodded.
“I hope so, Brad. I really did miss you.”
You showed Bradley out and waved him goodbye as he walked down the stairwell. As soon as he was out of sight you bit back tears and went back into the apartment. You sniffled as you unpacked your kitchen essentials, and laughed wetly as you remembered some of the events of the night before. You suddenly recalled why Bradley was in your room, he’d insisted on waiting until you fell asleep before he went to bed himself, and he sat singing 80’s and 90’s hits softly to you as he drank his beer, and as it had worked so well in the past, it still worked perfectly now.
As Bradley sang Aerosmith, your eyes fluttered shut;
“… Don't wanna close my eyes,
I don't wanna to fall asleep,
'Cause I'd miss you baby…
And I don't wanna miss a thing.”
The last thought that sank through your mind as you drifted off into a comforting slumber, was that you finally felt safe, like really safe, and you hadn’t felt that way in a very long time.
Not since you moved away.

Present:
Bradley stood looking at you in awe and shock. He couldn't believe his eyes. In front of him stood a gorgeous woman, breathtakingly beautiful, and surprisingly confident having just nearly fallen. The woman in front of him was a stark contrast to the shy girl he'd known years ago, yet she was exactly the same somehow.
"Birdy is that really you?" He blinked as his strong beefy hands held you in place.
You chuckled, your mouth curling into a grin as you looked into the familiar brown eyes that kept you sane throughout high school.
"It sure is, but I'm having a hard time believing it's you, Brad." You took in his enormous stature, tanned muscles bulging under his tight shirt sleeves, sweat glistening off of his exposed chest under the colourful lights. He now had a strong moustache, a chiselled jawline replaced his chubby cheeks, and his mop of dark hair now neat blond-chestnut curls, complimenting his sun kissed skin.
You and Bradley stared at one another for what felt like forever, before he huffed a laugh of disbelief, shook his head, and pulled you in for a hug, the familiar feeling catching you off guard and you sucked in a deep breath. He still smelled the same, like tobacco and cedar wood, just without the sweaty teen boy odour.
You gingerly wrapped your arms around him and squeezed, you forgot how much you'd missed him.
You must have been holding one another for a long time, because Gabby suddenly cleared her throat and pulled you from your bubble. You pulled away and looked at her awkwardly as she raised an eyebrow at you.
"Been here literally 2 minutes and you've already pulled." She scoffed jokingly.
You laughed, "Uhm, Gabs this is Bradley, my old best friend I was telling you about."
"Hi." Bradley smiled and stuck out a hand. She shook his hand and mouthed a not so secret 'wow' at you. You rolled your eyes and turned to Bradley.
"What are you doing here?"
"Oh, it's my friends bachelor party tonight, he's around here somewhere." Bradley scanned the room but came up short. "What about you...two?"
"I just moved here, Gabby's showing me around, I guess you could say." You chuckled awkwardly.
"I'll... let you two catch up. I need the bathroom anyway." She winked at you as she handed you her drink to watch.
"So, you're not in New York for long then I'd imagine?" You asked.
"Nah, just until after the wedding. I'm out of here Monday." He explained as you walked a little way out of the crowd to a quiet corner. You nodded.
"That's a pity, would be nice to catch up. Look Brad, I'm sorry I stopped responding to your texts, I-"
"Hey, say no more. Life gets busy, I get it." He gave you a reassuring smile. Bradley had no idea just how busy and crazy life had gotten after you moved. "While you're here, do you wanna go for a drink?"
"What you mean, like, now?" You asked. "Aren't you here with your friends? Plus I'm with Gabby, I shouldn't..."
"Okay, how about after?"
You thought for a moment, and nodded. "Yeah, okay. I'll have a few drinks with Gabs, and you can come grab me when you're finished?"
Bradley nodded and bit his lip to stop a grin, "Good. We've got a lot of catching up to do, Birdy. I've missed you." and like the old days, Bradley ruffled your hair and left. You huffed and fixed your hair just as Gabby came back from the bathroom, and you struggled to keep your focus on her for the rest of the evening.

Past:
You'd just finished getting ready, your baby pink prom dress looked super cute and your mom had loosely French Braided your unruly waves. She'd skilfully applied makeup so that your skin looked flawless and your eyes popped. You'd never felt more beautiful, and suddenly you felt less nervous. Maybe Bradley would see you and forget all about Michelle.
The doorbell rang and your dad went to answer it, you could hear him and Bradley talking about the latest football game.
"You ready?" Your mom grinned, "You look beautiful, pumpkin."
You nodded with a grin and you walked to the front door. Bradley turned as he saw you and his jaw dropped.
"Jeez, Birdy, you look pretty." He breathed.
"Oh shut up." You blushed, "You look nice too. But what's with the red tie, you look like a rooster." You teased. Bradley scoffed with mock offense.
"Right, Birdy and Rooster, get out of my house." Your dad laughed. "Have a good time, but make sure she's home by 11, son."
"Yes sir, have a good night!" Bradley waved goodbye to your parents and you shot them awkward looks, telling them to close the door and go inside.
You mom pulled your dad inside and shut the door.
Bradley helped you into his truck, carefully lifting your dress so it wouldn't rub against the dirty sides, and even went so far as to buckle you in. Your faces were inches apart, and you scanned the face you'd gotten so used to for the millionth time, only he seemed different now.
As he climbed into the front seat, he stopped to look at you for a while.
"What?" You asked, feeling self conscious suddenly.
"Nothing, you just really do look pretty. Didn't realise you could clean up so good." He grinned as he started the truck and pulled away.
You scoffed, "Speak for yourself, Bradshaw. Other than the tie you look like a real man."
"I am a real man, thank you. If only you could see what's under these pants, you'd be-"
"Ew, shut up." You smacked him playfully on the arm and Bradley laughed.
You pulled up to Michelle's house and you waited in the car as Bradley walked up the long drive to her front door. He knocked and Michelle walked out, looking stunning in a figure hugging red dress, her boobs almost spilling over the top.
You sighed as you watched Bradleys eyes light up as they walked down to the car. Michelle stopped in front of your door, looking at you expectantly. Bradley moved around her to open the back door for her to get in, but she didn't budge.
You looked at her and rolled down the window.
"Hi Michelle."
"Hello, aren't you gonna... you know?" Her voice was steely and bored.
"You want me to move?" You asked in disbelief.
"Well yeah, I am his date. What are people gonna think when they see me climbing out of the back of this thing?" she scoffed.
"Okay." You mumbled, unbuckling your seat belt.
"No, Birdy. Michelle, she's already sitting there, it's not a big deal, can't you just climb in the back? It's less than 2 minutes to the hall." Bradley argued, and you stopped in your tracks.
Michelle raised her eyebrows at him, and immediately you sensed the energy shift.
"No, it's fine." You opened the door and hopped out, Michelle immediately taking your place.
"What are you doing? That's always your spot." Bradley whispered to you as you climbed into the back.
"Keeping the peace." you whispered back.
Bradley huffed out a sigh and shook his head, crossing over to the front and climbing in.
The drive to the school hall was silent and awkward, and you noticed Bradleys eyes flitting to you in the back seat through the rear view mirror every so often.
When the car stopped, you hopped out, and Michelle waited for Bradley to cross to her end and help her out of the truck.
The three of you walked towards the school, and as more people came into view, Michelle's energy shifted again. She was all smiles as she hung on to Bradleys arm, you awkwardly falling behind.
"Smile for the camera Brad." She forced through her grin, and planted a kiss on his cheek as the school reported snapped a picture.
This would be a long evening and you knew it.

Present:
The night moved quickly, and the drinks were flowing as you and Gabby took to the dance floor. You lost yourself in the music until you were out of breath and beckoned for Gabby to join you outside, but she gestured to the guy she was dancing with. You nodded and went out to the balcony.
The night air was beginning to cool and you welcomed the goosebumps that covered your too hot skin. Your feet were killing you, so you leaned against the balcony railing to take some of the weight off of them.
As you watched the people on the street below, you gradually regained your breath. You stood up to go back inside, but you felt a body bump up against you.
"Oh sorry." you apologised for them, as you stepped away, giving the drunk man a polite nod.
"Wait, baby, where are you going? I was hoping to get to know you, been watching you all night. You dance real good." The man slurred, grabbing your wrist.
You pulled out of his grip, "Sorry I have to get back to my friend." You turned to walk inside, but he suddenly wrapped a hand around your waist and pulled his hand against your stomach until you were pressed up against him.
You writhed against him, but his grip was too strong.
"Let go." You demanded, "Get off of me." You tried to pry his hands away, but even in his drunken state he was too strong for you.
"Come on, lady, I just wanna buy you a drink, stop being such a fuckin' prude." He struggled against you, his hot breath gliding across your cheek.
"I said get OFF!" You elbowed the man in the chest and he loosened his grip as he gasped, and you went flying away from him.
For the second time that evening, you collided into someone else, and looked up to see concerned, familiar eyes. Bradley scanned your face for a second, and once he was sure you were ok, he turned his attention to the man.
An angry scowl you had only seen once before appeared on his face as she crossed the balcony and lifted the man by his shirt.
As the man dangled a couple feet off of the ground, he whimpered. Your jaw dropped at the sheer strength Bradley possessed. You guessed those muscles weren't just for show.
"If I don't see you leave in the next 2 minutes, I swear to god I'm gonna ruin that pretty boy face of yours. You touch my girl again, or any other girl while I'm around, that's end game for you, buddy. Got it?" He growled.
The man nodded, "I'm sorry, I- I didn't know she was spoken for, honest." He whimpered, and Bradley threw him to the ground.
"Get out."
The man hurried to his feet and passed you. Sure enough after a couple minutes he exited the building quickly and you watched as he ran down the street below, before turning your attention back to Bradley.
"That was incredible." You mumbled.
"Are you okay?" Bradley asked, crossing the balcony to inspect you fully. His hands smoother over your bare arms and then his hands cupped your face.
"I'm ok, Brad, he literally just grabbed me, I'm fine." You pushed his hands away.
Bradley nodded, and let out a breath of relief as his big hands ran through his curls.
"You ready to go get that drink?"

Past:
"Oh my god, Y/N! You look so pretty!" Sophie from your English class commented.
"Thanks Soph, so do you!" You turned and made pleasant conversation with Sophie and another girl, while Bradley did his rounds with Michelle and her friends. It was all fake smiles and posing for pictures, and Bradley found himself growing bored quickly.
"Hey, I'm gonna go grab some soda, you want one?" Bradley offered, and Michelle nodded, turning back to her friends.
"You look hot, girl, and so does Mr Bradshaw over there, did he get... bigger, over the summer?" Jessica asked Michelle, their whole group giggling.
Michelle rolled her eyes, "Ugh, maybe, I don't know. I'm having the worst time. His little friend is tagging along as a pity invite. It's like having his little sister along for the ride."
"Who?" Jessica asked.
"Y/N Y/L/N." she pointed to you in the corner of the room. "I doubt I'm gonna get my V card swiped tonight, wanna ditch?"
Bradley hadn't noticed when Michelle and her friends slipped out. Jessica had a fake licence, and they'd decided to buy some drinks and hit a house party instead.
When he turned around, she was gone, and he scanned the room for her. When he saw you, he immediately crossed over to you and handed you your soda.
"Thanks, 'Rooster'." You said playfully, as you opened the can.
"Have you seen Michelle anywhere?" He asked, distracted.
You shook your head, "Last place I saw her was over by the DJ booth talking to her friends. Maybe ask the DJ?"
Bradley nodded and walked over as you stood against the wall and watched your school mates dancing and chatting away.
A few minutes later, Bradley stormed over to you.
"Did you find her?" You asked over the music, Bradleys eyes were dark and his eyebrows were creased, he was pissed.
"What did you say to her?" He demanded. You straigtened.
"What do you mean?"
"What did you say to Michelle? The DJ says she was talking about you and then wanted to leave." his face was red now, and his chest was heaving.
"I didn't say anything to her, I've literally just been standing here the-"
"You must have done something. God, that's just like you, Y/N. Just because you didn't get asked to Prom you thought it would be better to scare her away so I'd be all yours instead, didn't you? Didn't you?" He demanded, and you were too shocked to say anything. Bradley took this as confirmation.
He scoffed and his hands fell to his hips as he nodded.
"Yeah, of course you did. Thanks a lot, you ruined my fucking night."
You watched as Bradley stormed out of the hall, and hot tears rolled down your face, ruining your perfect makeup.
"Y/N, are you okay?" Sophie asked, having witnessed the whole thing, gently taking your arm and pulling you to a table to sit. You wiped your eyes and nodded, your eyes trained on the door, hoping Bradley would come back in for you.
After a few minutes, Sophie having done her best to console you, you excused yourself and walked outside. You looked around for Bradley, but he wasn't among the few students and teachers outside, so you crossed the lawn and made your way down the sidewalk to where Bradley had parked the truck.
Your lip quivered as you realised, dread suddenly washing over you. Bradley had left you behind.

Past:
You walked down the unfamiliar corridor, past blue and red lockers as you desperately searched for the correct classroom. It was your first year at a new school, and although you’d done this so many times before, you hated being new, and the unknown terrified you.
You were already late, having struggled to find your home room, and panic was creeping up your chest like hot acid threatening to burn through your sternum.
You took in a shaky breath as you reached the end of the corridor, still having not found the correct room, and you turned around to recheck the ones you’d passed.
As you turned, you bumped into someone and stumbled back slightly. Once you'd steadied yourself, you looked up.
“Sorry…” the tall boy mumbled. A smattering of small scars adorned his chubby face, the makings of facial hair beginning to show themselves on his chin and upper lip, well into the beginning of puberty. He looked at least a year or two older than you, and he was so tall you had to crank your neck to look at him. “Are you new?”
You nodded awkwardly, too shy to utter a word. You were already nervous, but boys made you even more so.
“Ok, what room are you looking for? I can take you!” He offered, a cute smile now spread across his face.
You smiled, holding up the piece of paper that showed your schedule, “Thank you, it’s Mrs Carters room, I’ve looked everywhere but I can’t find it.” You blushed.
“Ah, yeah so Mrs Carters isn’t actually in the main building, she’s over at the Art Block.” He explained, beginning to walk to the exit, you followed.
“The… the art block?” You queried.
“Yeah, she teaches art, but she’ll be your home room teacher this year. My home room teacher is Mr Dent, he’s the head of the Maths department, I hate him, blegh.” The boy mumbled as he walked. “I’m Bradley, by the way.” He stuck out a hand to you.
“I’m Y/N.” You offered, and gave his hand a little shake.
“Aw, you’re so gentle. Like a little bird. I think I’ll call you that.” He chuckled.
“L-little bird?”
“Yeah, lil bird.”
You grinned and nodded, as you crossed the small lawn between the main building and the Art Block. The Art Block was beautifully decorated, a variety of flowers and insects painted onto the brick, a colourful contrast to the pale grey building behind you.
“Hope you like art, and crazy people. Mrs Carter’s nuts.” He laughed, stopping at the door.
You nodded, “Thanks for saving me.” You joked.
“Any time lil bird. If you need anyone to sit with at lunch, I usually sit by that tree over there.” He pointed. “My friends spend breaks with their girlfriends, and they get all gross so I’ve taken to eating alone.”
You chuckled and nodded, as Bradley walked back to the main building. You watched as he left, and then took a deep breath as you pushed open the big doors to the Art Block building. Your nerves were now considerably less frazzled, and the rest of the day didn’t seem to be as scary a thought as you’d imagined it would be.

Present:
“That’s the last box, can we go get a drink now pleeeeassee?” Gabby begged you as she plonked down on your new sofa.
You chuckled, wafting your t-shirt to allow some cool air to touch your sweaty skin. The climb from the street below to your apartment on the 5th floor, multiple times with heavy boxes, proved to be all the exercise you’d need for the year.
“Yeah we can go get a drink now. Can I at least shower first?” You panted, closing the front door.
“Sure, I’m gonna take a nap in that case.” Gabby laughed, laying down and closing her eyes, as her breathing returned to normal. Gabby loved fitness, and was in much better shape right now having done similar exertions every day, but you were a panting mess as you climbed into the shower and washed the sweat off of your skin.
Once you’d finished, you wrapped a towel around your body and walked back into the lounge to fish around a box for something to wear.
Gabby was snoring now, her arm draped over her eyes to block out the light from the many lamps you’d plugged in.
“Gabby.” You whispered loudly. “Gabs, wake up, I need your help.” You whispered louder.
Gabby snored away, so you sighed and walked over to her. “Pssstt!” You hissed in her ear, nothing.
You sat down on her and that did the trick, she woke up with a “ooph!” And gave you a dirty look.
“Whaaaaat? I was having such a good dream about that guy at the coffee shop.”
“Ew, not on my sofa please. I need you to help me decide on what to wear, you can borrow something too.”
Gabby got up and helped you rifle through your boxes.
“Ohhh, you always look hot in this.” She took out a dark green satin cowl neck dress and threw it at you, and you held it out to look at.
“Where exactly are we going drinking? I was thinking a nice little bar somewhere, but this dress screams filthy club.” You grimaced.
“Okay fine, what about… yeah this is super cute, kinda classy too.” She held out a lacey little black dress, it was still small enough to leave little to the imagination, but was classier than the green dress.
“Okay, that’s better I suppose.” You nodded and she threw you the dress.
“I’ll take the satin.” She winked, taking the green dress and changing in your living room.
You slipped into the black lace and brushed your hair out into neat waves. You quickly put on some makeup and heels, and you were both out the door.
The street was now packed, a Saturday night in the city meant party time, and that’s certainly what Gabby had in mind as she dragged you to the bustling heart of the city.
————————————
Past:
The first few days passed in a blur, and you were thankful for Bradley being there. He grounded you when your mind was going a mile a minute, and helped you find all of your classes. He ate lunch with you every day under the big oak tree, and you learned about his life bit by bit each time.
You knew his dad had died, and his moms name was Carole. You knew he was an only child and that meant he could be lonely some times, so you began to meet up with him after school most days to do homework together. Bradley would come over to your house often, where you introduced him to your younger brother and sister.
Bradley also connected with your dad, possibly due to not having had a father figure in his life since his God Father wasn’t around much.
Your dad taught Bradley to drive, and helped him fix up an old car once he’d gotten his licence. Once Bradley could drive, he picked you up all the time to just drive around, and you now had a personal chauffeur to drive you to school and back each day. You two became joined at the hip, inseparable outside of your classes.
As the years passed, Bradley was even allowed to sleep over, once your parents had realised there were no ulterior motives. You would play pranks on one another, and on your siblings. You would tell one another everything, but you found that there were some things you'd rather he didn't tell you.
"I think I'm in love, lil bird. She's so hot! Ever since she came back from summer break, it's like she went to model camp or something." Bradley raved.
"Gross, I don't wanna know that." You flushed red, whether out of awkwardness or jealousy you weren't sure. Bradley had developed a crush on Michelle Jennings around the same time you'd developed a crush on Bradley, and the fact that she was so much prettier than you did little for your confidence, so you kept quiet about your feelings.
Bradley had asked Michelle to prom, and as he'd begun to develop some muscles, and his facial hair had filled out, he was beginning to look less dorky, and more like a young man, so she said yes. Bradley was elated.
“I told you, Brad, I don’t wanna go.” You mumbled, shoving your prom dress into the bottom of your wardrobe and skulking over to where Bradley stood by your bedroom window.
“C’mon. Please! What if things get awkward between me and Michelle? I won’t have anyone to run to.” He pouted.
“No, Bradley. No one’s asked me to go and I’m all… ugly and stuff.” You groaned, looking at your skin in the mirror. You had reached that awkward stage where pimples were flaring up every day and your hair was unruly. You hadn’t exactly blossomed like some of the popular girls had. The ones who’s parents could afford expensive dermatology appointments and the newest straighteners. You simply had to make do with cheap spot treatments and a thousand hair clips.
“You’re not ugly, don’t be stupid. No one looks good when they look THAT close in the mirror.” Bradley chuckled, walking over to you. “And who cares if you don’t have a date? I can have two dates, there aren’t any rules against it.”
You shot him a glare, “Yeah, I’m sure Michelle will be happy about that. You’ll spend the entire evening making out with the girl of your dreams and I’ll be awkward third wheel.” You rolled your eyes.
“Birdy, please.” He gave you soft eyes and his tone was genuinely pleading.
You sighed as you looked at him, and then at your wardrobe. “Okay, fine. Can you pick me up?”
Bradley grinned, and rushed over to envelope you in a bear hug. “You know I will, I’ll see you at 7.”
—————————————
Present:
Your skin had cleared up and your hair tamed slightly over time, you had finally come into your own as a woman and you looked damn fine. You were almost unrecognisable apart from your smile and your eyes, and so you’d made it your life’s mission not to let anyone in your new life see pictures of you in high school. You were a different person entirely, more confident, more fun, and much smarter.
You had met Gabby after you moved away, and she had taken on the role of best friend. A role you so desperately needed filling without the tall boy in your life anymore. You and Gabby both went on to study at the same university, and then you took jobs at the same school, Gabby as coach for the junior girls soccer team, and you as a Biology teacher.
You fell into a happy rhythm, and started dating one of the other teachers in the biology department, Jacob, and before long your daily thoughts of Bradley turned to weekly thoughts, and eventually you barely thought of him at all, occasionally dreaming of the best friend you’d once had and loved so dearly.
You moved in with Jacob and life continued, however things began to turn sour, and you called quits on the relationship.
Gabby had found a new job at a prep school in New York, and a few months later when a vacancy for a Natural Sciences Educator opened up, she begged you to take it. The pay was so much better, and best of all you'd be with Gabby again.
You weren't thrilled to live in such a large city, much preferring a quiet little town and more relaxed lifestyle, but you missed your best friend, and the town was becoming more and more hostile after things with Jacob had gotten out of control.
You applied and got the job due to your stellar recommendations and flawless interview. You moved not long after and there you were, with Gabby, about to have your first taste of city life.
"I feel underdressed now." You sighed, everyone was dressed to the nines, and Gabby had unwittingly dragged you to a nightclub rather than bar.
"Don't be silly, you look incredible in that dress, men are gonna be drooling over you." She smacked your butt playfully and you glared at her. "C'mon, I know the bouncer."
Gabby took your hand and waltzed over to the front of the long line.
Gabby was incredibly stunning, long blond hair and an athletic body that could make anyone do a double take, so when she walked up to the bouncer and purred a 'Hey Ronnie, is there any chance we can skip that long old line tonight, I'm so thirsty.', it was no surprise that Ronnie grinned and let you both right in.
"That... was incredible. Can I take you with me next time I go to the bank?" You chuckled.
"You know I'll do anything for you." She winked.
You made your way to the bar and Gabby squeezed through, flagging down a bar tender. She was in her element, but you felt as out of place as a polar bear in a desert. You looked around the packed night club at the patrons, all wearing Prada and Gucci, hair styled so perfectly that it didn't move when they danced, expensive perfumes choking you as they wafted past. You felt like an imposter in your cheap dress, regardless of how beautiful you looked.
Gabby handed you a glass of wine and you thanked her. She craned her neck in search of an empty table. As she found one she summoned you to follow her through the crowds.
You stayed as close as you could but inevitably got separated as a group of women danced in your path. You politely moved around them, just as a tree of a man stepped in your way and you bumped into one another. You bounced off of his hard body and lost your balance, flailing backwards as your heels wobbled beneath you.
Just as you had accepted your fate, a strong pair of arms shot out and caught you, pulling you back up before your body had the chance to make contact with the hard, sticky floor below.
"Oh my god, I am so sorry." He said loudly over the booming music. You would recognise that voice anywhere, but as you looked up, the voice did not belong to the face you were so used to it being attached to.
You gulped, and as his eyes made contact with yours, he recognised you suddenly.
"Little Bird?" He breathed in disbelief.
"Hey, Bradley."

-- Chapter 3 Here --
_____________________________
Bob stood facing the large group of women, eyes wide and terror creeping up from his chest like worms emerging from disturbed soil.
He didn’t know what was happening, and he certainly had no idea you were a witch, let alone the curses and rituals that dowsed your world in secrecy.
“What’s going on?” Bob asked carefully, as dozens of eyes locked onto him, menacing grins plastered across the faces of the women clad in lace and wicker.
“You’re just in time, the tide is coming in, Robert.” One older woman grinned, she stepped forward slowly.
Bob took a small step back and then tried to edge to the left towards you, but he was blocked by 3 women who seemingly flew towards him, so quick and smooth like their feet never touched the ground.
Bob stumbled backwards in surprise, landing on his bottom on the dry sand below, the sky above now almost as dark as night, as black clouds removed what little sunlight there was left. Lanterns and candles suddenly illuminated the faces and you struggled under your confines as Bobs terror and confusion grew.
The women hovered over Bob and inspected him, the older woman nodded and gestured to the others, who grabbed ahold of Bobs arms and pulled him to his feet.
Bob struggled, “What’s going on?” He demanded, but even for a man his size, the women were too strong.
“You came willingly.” One explained.
Bob looked at her with an exasperated expression, “Of course I came willingly, there was a note.”
You sobbed a muffled cry through your gag, struggling as you hung above the slowly rising water.
Bob pulled free from the womens’ grip and ran over to you, making it more than halfway before suddenly his legs wouldn’t move any further. He stopped and looked down, first in confusion and then in horror.
His legs were encased in wet sand as strong as concrete, however he hadn’t sunk into the beach below, rather the sand had moved up his legs and pinned him in place.
“What the fuck?” Bob breathed to himself as he clawed at the sand, the women slowly circling him. “What is this?!”
“You mean our little Bree didn’t tell you? Poor boy, this must be quite a shock.” A red headed woman chuckled as she made her way from the back.
Bob said nothing as he tried to hack away at the sand which kept creeping further and further up his body, his eyes flitting between the sand and the woman who walked closer and closer.
Your muffled screams continued as you tried desperately to stop what was happening.
“I bet she’ll want to tell you herself.” The redhead said, and flicked her fingers. The gag flew out of your mouth and you coughed as fresh sea air filled your lungs.
You gasped, your lungs not filling quick enough for the urgency of the situation.
“Robby, I’m so sorry.” You sobbed as soon as you could pull in a breath.
“Bree what’s happening?” Bob looked at you, his eyes brimming with fear, his jaw locked and you swore you could see his bottom lip quivering. Your heart broke and you hated yourself for being so stupid.
“I shouldn’t have invited you round, but I was being selfish, this would never have happened if I’d just left you alone.” You cried, “Aunt Gilly, please! This is all a misunderstanding, it’s not him.” You lied.
“Oh honey.” She tutted at you, “The bones landed on your name, and the bones never lie. We saw you with him last night, if he’s not your true love then who is?”
You thought for a long moment, and made eye contact with Bob as you spoke, “There’s no one. I don’t love him, I just wanted to hurt that bitch he was with.”
Bob doubled over as he drew in a shaky breath, the impact of your words physically knocking into him, his eyes welled up and his eyebrows knit together at the betrayal as he stared into yours. Your face was stern and stone cold as you looked back at his handsome, sad face.
“Why would you do that?” Aunt Gilly asked, amusement plastered across her pretty features.
You took a deep breath, “She gave me a dirty look.”
“Is that it?” Gilly scoffed.
“No, then she… then she called me an ugly whore. I couldn’t take it, I hated her from that moment and I… just needed to get revenge.” You lied. “I would rather die alone than be with Bob.”
Tears slid out from Bobs eyes as he looked down at the ground, your words sinking into his bones like acid. How could he have been so stupid to think this total stranger loved him the way he loved her?
You tore your eyes away from Bob and looked to aunt Gilly. “I know you need your ritual, but it won’t work if I don’t love him, right?” You pointed out.
She thought for a moment, before nodding.
“Cut her down.” She instructed to the others. “We’ll redo the selection ceremony tonight, it must have been a mistake. Wouldn’t want my niece to die in error, after all.”
“We’ll have to wipe his memory.” One of the others piped up.
“I’ll do it.” You said quickly, as you were helped down, your body gliding over the water and onto the dry sand. You ran over to Bob as the sand began to retreat from his shaky legs, and he collapsed onto his knees.
You cupped Bobs face and forced him to look at you, his eyes watery and yours determined. As soon as your iris’s lined up, you concentrated and your voice rang around Bobs head.
“I lied, I have a lot to explain but you need to pretend to forget, just until we’re out of here.”
“Huh?” Bob said out loud.
“Shh! Talk in your head, Robby, I can hear you.” You instructed.
“I’m scared, Bree, what’s happening?” He thought.
“I’ll explain everything I promise. I need you to act like you don’t know what just happened, now.” You instructed.
Bob played along and shook his head, his eyebrows furrowing as he looked around.
“What… what happened?” He asked.
“Nothing, Bob. You were running along the beach and you must have hit your head, we found you lying here. Are you okay?” You pretended.
Bob nodded carefully as you helped him stand to his feet, still a bit wobbly.
You looked around at the others, who seemed satisfied, almost too easily tricked, and smiled at them. “I’m gonna take him to his bed and breakfast, make sure he’s okay.”
Aunt Gilly nodded, but there was still a hint of suspicion in her eyes. “Don’t be long, we have some talking to do.”
Gilly and the other witches left the deserted beach and finally, when they were out of sight, you let in a deep breath and sobbed. You collapsed into the sand, your chest closing up as the reality of the situation dawned on you.
They may have bought the lie for now, but they’d soon throw the bones again and realise you'd lied. They wouldn't take it well considering you'd broken a sacred rule for the sake of a man.
Bob dropped to his knees and held you as you sobbed, more confused than ever. You wrapped your arms around him to anchor yourself until you could breathe again.
“We have to go.” You whispered, looking up at him finally.
“Bree what is going on?” He cupped your face and looked at you with a desperation in his eyes.
“I lied to them Robby, and we don’t have much time.”
————————————
Bob unlocked his room door and you quickly pushed inside and locked the door behind you.
You grabbed Bobs duffle bag and began stuffing his things inside haphazardly, rushing around the room with a sense of urgency Bob had never seen before. He ran a hand through his hair as he watched, until you instructed him to get what he needed.
“Bree, stop. Stop!” He walked over and grabbed your arms, forcing you to stop and look at him.
Your eyes began to well up as you looked back into his, and you brought a hand up to cup his face. “I’m so sorry Bob, I should have told you- actually I should have just left you alone.”
Bob shook his head in disbelief, “Surely you don’t mean that? I wouldn’t change a thing, Bree. I know you said you don’t love me but-“
You shushed him and shook your head. “No, I lied to them, I had to. I do love you, and I can’t believe I’m saying that not even a week after meeting you, but I feel like… like we've been here before, Bob.” You whispered, your eyes falling to your feet.
Bobs lips curled into a grin, his eyes softening as he tilted your chin up. “I am head over heels in love with you, and I don’t care how or why.” Bob pressed his lips to yours and you both sighed at the contact, electricity zapping through your bodies. Your arms moved to wrap around Bobs neck, and his hands fell to the small of your back, pulling you into him.
You kissed him gently, savouring the feeling of his lips on yours, and his big hands protectively holding you. You felt safe, for just a moment.
Bob pulled away reluctantly and rested his forehead to yours, his eyes closed as he sighed once more.
“Please just tell me what’s going on, Bree, I just want to be on the same page.”
You nodded, and took a step back. “You better sit down.”
Bob did as he was instructed and you paced up and down the room, trying to decide how best to explain everything.
You took a deep breath.
“I’m a witch. Not ironically, like… a real witch. Magic and everything. Those women were witches too, the one with the red hair is my aunt.” You looked at Bob for a moment to gauge his expression. Bob stared back at you confused, albeit not shocked.
You continued, “There’s sort of a curse on my family, which is why I should have left you alone, but… I just couldn’t stop myself.”
“What curse?” Bob interjected.
You turned to face Bob fully, fiddling with your fingers nervously.
“Any man who falls in love with one of us… dies. We don’t know when or how until it happens.”
Bob looked surprised now, his eyebrows pulling together as he looked at you.
“But… after my father died, the aunts figured out that a ritual sacrifice made in the name of true love once a year would put a stop to the curse. It’s not just my immediate family who are affected, turns out there are hundreds of us around the world, who have moved away and changed their names through marriage or adoption and they’re all affected the same exact way. So they came up with a selection system, all of our names- and I mean every single female descendant of the Owens bloodline, all of our names are on a chart. A polished breastbone is then placed in a bag of… Never mind, that part's not important. The bone is thrown onto the chart and the name it lands on, is the one chosen.” You blabbed on, and Bobs mouth hung open as he listened to you ramble.
“The higher powers select you, and you get taken. Once you die, or if your one true loves comes willingly to be sacrificed in your place, the curse is stopped for another year, and the other women can live peacefully with their loved ones. I just… never thought it would be me.”
Once you had finished, Bob was quiet as he stared at the ground, mulling over your words and their implications.
“So… once they find out it wasn’t a mistake, once the bone lands on your name again, they’ll come for us? And if I don’t take your place, they’ll…” Bob couldn’t finish his sentence, it made him want to be sick.
You nodded, “Yeah, they’ll kill me instead.”
Bob stood suddenly and crossed over to you, cupping your face again, “I won’t let that happen Bree, they can take me.” He said earnestly, his eyes swimming with panic and sincerity.
You shook your head and pulled away from Bobs grasp, “No, there is no chance in the heavens or hell that I’ll ever let that happen. That’s why we have to go, tonight. Get as far away as we can before they realise I lied. I’m pretty sure my aunt already knows, so we don’t have much time.” You pleaded.
Bob nodded and finished packing his things.
“Wait… what about your stuff?” He asked.
“I’ll have to go without, they’ll be at the house so we can’t go back. We’ll need to get off the island and catch a bus somewhere and we can sort the rest when we get there. Can we go to your house?”
Bob nodded, and slung his duffel bag over his shoulder before taking your hand and leaving the room hastily.
You walked out into the street, the sky still overcast and ominous as you scanned the area for any sign of the sisters. Upon finding it empty other than a few shoppers, you ran over to the bus stop.
The next bus was just pulling up so you were in luck, and you hurried on and made your way to the back with Bob. As the bus drove out of town, you watched. Watched for anything that could spell out your demise. Every unwitting pedestrian looked like one of the sisters, and every cat or crow looked like a familiar, causing your stomach to churn until the bus finally left the small island.
You sat back and breathed a sigh of relief and looked over to Bob who had a similar expression. "I'm sorry Robby." You whispered, intertwining your fingers with his.
"I'm not." He reassured you, bringing his arm up to wrap around your shoulders, pulling you into him, but you couldn’t help but hate yourself for putting him in this situation.
And you couldn’t help but feel this wasn’t the first time you’d put him in danger.

18+ Only Beyond This Point
——————————
It took Bob a moment to realise what was happening, but when he did, his skin set ablaze and he wrapped both of his strong arms around your back, deepening the kiss.
Your fingers found purchase in his soft locks, and you let out a desperate whimper. This feeling was something else entirely. Something you had never felt before, but somehow his lips felt so familiar, and you needed more.
You pressed your body up against his and Bob moaned into your lips as he felt your soft curves against his hard muscles, his breathing growing heavy as his need for you grew. His large hands spread out across your back and pulled you into him as his tongue swiped across your bottom lip.
Suddenly the realisation of what you were doing dawned on you, and the guilt began to set in. There you were, basking in the glowing sunset, in your beautiful garden, with the gorgeous man you had these strong inexplicable feelings for, and you were pushing him away.
Bob looked at you in surprise for a moment, before he realised too, that what you were doing was wrong. He sighed, and dragged a hand down his face, screwing his eyes shut.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have…” you mumbled apologetically, your eyes flitting between Bob and the ground.
“It’s not your fault, I… I wanted to… But, I can’t do this right now.” He sighed.
Bob looked at you once more, his face a picture of pain and remorse, mixed with something else you couldn’t quite place, and his eyebrows pulled together. “I gotta go.” He murmured, turned around and left.
You stood in your garden, confused and hurt, although you had no idea why. You were the one very much in the wrong, and you felt disgusted. How could you do this? You wanted to blame the fact that you weren’t in control of your actions, but was that really just a cop out because you wanted him so badly?
You wanted to scream, but instead you willed yourself to calm down, and paced circles in your garden until the sun disappeared behind the sea.
Eventually you dragged yourself inside, and immediately coughed as smoke billowed out from the oven, and the sound of thick sloppy liquid bubbled on the stove.
“Shit.” You cursed under your breath as you ran to the oven and threw the door open. You grabbed a pair of oven mitts and gripped the now charcoaled hunk of bread between your covered hands, throwing it onto the stone floor, before you fanned desperately at the smoke to disperse it.
You then stood and quickly turned the stove off and pushed the big pot off of the hot plate, the now mostly evaporated stew a stodgy gloop stuck to the bottom of the pan and starting to burn.
You groaned angrily and walked around the house throwing windows and doors open to air out the thick black smoke. If you had actually burnt the house down, your mother would kill you, and bring you back to life just to kill you all over again.
While the smoke cleared, you stormed to the kitchen and poured the rest of the wine into a large glass. You downed half of it in one go, and then slowed to sipping as you stood next to the kitchen table, absentmindedly staring at the hunk of burnt bread on the floor.
In the midst of all the chaos, you hadn’t heard the broom clatter to the floor again, or the footsteps walking up your gravelled driveway, nor did you hear the creaking of the floorboard in the hall as whoever was in your house came ever closer.
—————————————
Bob ran a hand through his hair as he raced down your drive. He was fuelled by guilt and anger and frustration and love for someone that wasn’t his.
He needed to go back to the Bed and Breakfast and call Roxy, he needed to tell her what had happened and he definitely had to end it. He knew it would be painful, and he knew he’d feel awful, but he was also confident it was the right decision.
Once Bob reached the B&B, he grabbed his phone and paced for a while, contemplating what to say before he finally dialled the number.
It rang several times before the receiver clicked.
“Bobby, hi.” Her voice sounded surprised and hushed.
“Hi Rox, did you get home okay?”
“Yeah… got back not long ago. Look, Bobby, now isn’t a great time-“
“Rox there’s something we need to talk about.” Bob interrupted. If he didn’t do it now he feared he never would.
It was quiet on the other end of the line for a moment, but then there was an impatient sigh. “Okay, go on.” She said.
“I did something I shouldn’t have, and l’m so sorry. I’m sorry about a lot of things to be honest. I haven’t been a very good boyfriend for a while, because truth be told my heart and head have been somewhere else.” Bob mumbled.
“What do you mean?” She pressed.
“I cheated, Rox. I kissed someone else.”
She took a sharp intake of breath, “Who?”
“It doesn’t matter who-“
“Who, Robert?” She demanded.
Bob sighed. “Bree Owens.”
“Who?” She scoffed, she was growing angry.
Bob was quiet, he didn’t know how to explain that the beautiful girl he’d met just days before was the reason he was making this call.
It finally clicked, “Oh my god, it’s that slut from the store, isn’t it?” She scoffed.
“She’s not a slut.” Bob defended, suddenly angry and forgetting that it was him in the wrong, and she was rightfully upset. He sighed. “It’s not her fault, Rox.”
“How is it not her fault? If it weren’t for her you would be here with me now instead of on that stupid little island sucking on that bitch’s face!”
Bob was about to speak when he heard another voice in the background, a faint male voice. Rox covered the speaker as she mumbled something quietly, before she uncovered it again.
“Look, Bob, I gotta go, but if you come home tomorrow we can talk about everything.”
“Rox I’m not coming home, not yet anyway. I… I think this is it for us. I’m sorry about everything.” Bob hung up the phone and planted his face in his hands. He sighed loudly and lay back on the bed, staring at the ceiling as he thought about the last few years.
He’d been happy with Roxy at first, of course he had. She was beautiful and confident and popular, but that wasn’t all he needed, and before long he’d began to realise that. She was never really the one.
He began to think of you again, and his lips curled into a smile as he thought about how your body felt pressed against him, your heartbeats in sync. He needed you, and as he drifted off to sleep he thought about your beautiful face and how badly he wanted to hold you.
————————————
The next morning Bob sprang out of bed early. He was excited to see you, this time minus the guilt. He felt bad about how he’d left things the night before, but he was determined to make things right.
He hopped in the shower and let the hot water flow over his toned body, as his mind wandered to you again. He felt the familiar pull inside him urging him to find you, and it was growing more and more urgent.
Bob eventually gave in and threw on a t-shirt, jeans and a cap to tame his unruly damp locks, before he was out the door and heading for your house of the cliffs.
Bob stopped by Mrs Montgomery’s and bought a bouquet of pink gillyflowers and white daisies, something that reminded him of your soft nature and how beautiful you looked in the sunshine. He felt his heart begin to thud and the pull grew more urgent.
Bob whistled as he walked up the winding road that lead to your house, and he grinned as the driveway came into view. He was planning on sweeping you off of your feet the minute you answered the door, kissing you like you’d never been kissed before.
Bob crossed the driveway and jogged the last few meters across your front lawn, and suddenly his face dropped when he noticed your front door was already open. He slowed and peaked his head in through the door, knocking a couple times.
“Bree?” He called into the empty house. The lights were still on, despite the daylight filtering through the large windows.
Bob walked through the door and slowly made his way into the house, calling for you as he did.
“Bree, are you home?” He called again, and the echo of his voice reverberated through the empty hall.
Bob began to panic as he searched each room, coming up empty. He checked the back, before running upstairs and checking each room. When he failed to find you anywhere, he realised that the pulling sensation wasn’t excitement but foreboding.
Bob ran back out to the front yard and paced back and forth as he considered his options. He could call the police, but what would he say? The woman he’d only met days before, who he was on his way to confess his love to, was nowhere to be found? That surely wouldn’t go well. As a detective he knew how he’d come across, and he decided his best bet was to find you himself.
He stopped and let out a shaky breath, running his hands through his hair.
He scanned the ground for any clues that might help, he made his way over to the cliff side and peered down, relieved not to find you there.
He suddenly felt a sense of dread, awful scenarios making their way through his head, gradually getting worse the longer it took him to find you.
After a while he wandered back inside the house, frustrated, and ready to call the police after all, when he noticed something out of the corner of his eye.
He turned and walked towards the small white envelope, his name scrawled in messy hand writing.
‘Robert Floyd’
His hand began to tremble as he tore the envelope open, pulling out a single white piece of paper.
The letter was short, displaying 3 simple words;
‘Under the pier.’
—————————————
Bob ran as fast as he could down the winding road and through town. He passed confused patrons as they walked peacefully down the sidewalk, not slowing down as he allowed the pull to guide him towards you.
Even in his peak physical form, Bob was panting and out of breath as he reached the pier at the far end of the island. The pier had long been closed off to the public due to structural damage, with tape and bollards blocking the entrance.
Clouds began to darken and pull over the area as lightning lit up the distant ocean waves. There was no one around, and Bob suddenly wondered if he was in the right place. Was there another pier on the island? He was about to turn around and keep looking, when he heard the music.
Low, bassy, drum beats in the distance accompanied by a high pitched wailing noise, a woman singing.
Bob tore the tape blocking his way and squeezed past the large grey bollards, quickly making his way towards the haunting noise. The pulling sensation grew stronger and harder to ignore as the sound grew louder.
Bob ran onto the crumbling concrete of the pier and his eyes scanned the area for any signs of life. It was empty, and he couldn’t figure out where the sound was coming from.
It seemed to get louder as the wind picked up and the storm on the horizon began to brew.
He stopped and listened as he tried to control his breathing, his blue eyes frantically searching the abandoned harbour surrounding him, when suddenly, quietly, he heard you.
A muffled scream which disappeared as quickly as it appeared, but he knew it was you, and it was coming from under the pier.
Bob ran back, and jumped over onto the soft sand as thunder rumbled in the distance, the height of the fall sending him onto his stomach. Bob coughed and pushed himself onto his knees, his back to the pier, and suddenly the horrible singing and drum combo came to an abrupt stop.
As Bob stood up and turned around, finally facing the underside of the rickety old concrete jetty, his heart sank and his mouth went dry.
There you were, tied to the beams and mouth gagged, eyes pleading, and surrounded by the sisters of your coven, a ritual of some sorts, well and truly at play.
Bob had been lured, and the trap had worked.
