CONTEXT: the gaza freedom flotilla coalition aims to bring emergency aid (food, medical supplies, etc) to a starving and besieged gaza. activists and journalists from all over the world (including diaspora palestinians like dylan) will be participating, and they know the risk — in 2010 turkish activists attempting a similar mission had their flagship raided by israeli forces, who murdered 10 activists aboard (9 died on site and another died later from critical injuries).

A little-discussed detail in the Lavender AI article is that Israel is killing people based on being in the same Whatsapp group [1] as a suspected militant [2]. Where are they getting this data? Is WhatsApp sharing it? Lavender is Israel's system of "pre-crime" [3] - they use AI to guess who to kill in Gaza, and then bomb them when they're at home, along with their entire family. (Obscenely, they call this program "Where's Daddy"). One input to the AI is whether you're in a WhatsApp group with a suspected member of Hamas. There's a lot wrong with this - I'm in plenty of WhatsApp groups with strangers, neighbours, and in the carnage in Gaza you bet people are making groups to connect. But the part I want to focus on is whether they get this information from Meta. Meta has been promoting WhatsApp as a "private" social network, including "end-to-end" encryption of messages. Providing this data as input for Lavender undermines their claim that WhatsApp is a private messaging app. It is beyond obscene and makes Meta complicit in Israel's killings of "pre-crime" targets and their families, in violation of International Humanitarian Law and Meta's publicly stated commitment to human rights. No social network should be providing this sort of information about its users to countries engaging in "pre-crime".

The U.S. will use its veto power against a Palestinian bid to be recognized as a member state of the United Nations during a vote at the Security Council expected to take place Thursday evening. Vedant Patel, principal deputy spokesperson for the State Department, described as premature an effort by the Palestinian Authority (PA) to gain member status at the U.N. He said there was not unanimity among the Security Council’s 15 members that the Palestinian Authority had met the criteria for membership, with unresolved questions over the governance of the Gaza Strip, where Israel is in a war to defeat and eliminate the controlling power, Hamas. “And for that reason, the United States is voting no on this proposed Security Council resolution,” Patel said.
Earlier it was revealed that the United States was secretly pressuring other members of the Security Council to shoot down a Palestinian state membership so the US wouldn't have to use its veto as that would lead to a wave of local and international criticism for Joe Biden.

“takasugi is always thinking ‘why is gintoki crying’” so real. takasugi seeing gintoki again after 10 years and being utterly unable to engage with the idea of him Doing Okay now because. he always sees him crying. the image of gintoki’s Okayness was shattered for him 10 years ago. he’ll never be able to not see the ugliest pain inside of gintoki. putting a tarp on it and saying it’s okay now doesn’t work. gintoki’s playing house? sure he can do that. but what will it change. takasugi sees him playing carefully with a dollhouse while crying. it does not help make him less insane

Gintama Thoughts
Currently torn between thinking about:
How what Otose told Katsura back in the Stray Cat arc evolved through Shou-chan's memory loss/the Confessional arc and grew into the new form of government he proposed at the end of the series. Which means in Gintama, Tokyo exists because of public defecation. So sometimes taking a dump on a cat's grave is a good thing? (That chapter title, "Doing good things while doing bad things". Takasugi & the Kiheitai, but Katsura & Reforming the Country)
I was thinking about the PMMM: Rebellion movie, and the zeppelins/airships reminded me of the ships in the sky in Gintama's introduction. Which made me think of the symbolism of the ships in general. For one thing, there's the fact that Sorachi tends to draw characters standing on the bow of one of those things (a la Takasugi) sort of like how the cliff on Cliff Day looks. And maybe he'll add a Pole on the end, because... y'know the Terminal -> the Grave. But also when they're first introduced, the ships are sort of likened to clouds when Shinpachi's dad talks about wanting to look upon a cloudless Edo sky one more time. The sky of Edo is said to be "what drove the samurai to dream". (Dream. Shounen Jump and how it's a 'vehicle' for daydreams/escapism/fantasy. Hm.) So.. maybe ships are like Clouds. Gintoki's kimono pattern is supposed to be of clouds. So he, himself, is a 'ship in the sky', clouding it up? Or is it that the ships can fly because Gintoki is actually underwater, in a series where sadness is frequently symbolized by rain? He "can't swim" because he's already drowning/already sad? He "can't swim" but he never actually drowns in front of us because he's still fighting to rise up/not lose against his sadness? Or he can't swim because he's past the point of drowning and already dead? (Dozaemon - the drowned corpse?) In Farewell Shinsengumi, a ship drops directly onto Utsuro, in front of Gintoki. In Silver Soul, when defeating Utsuro the ships in the sky start to fall like shooting stars. Shooting stars. Gintoki promised Sakamoto that he'd fish a shooting star that's fallen to earth and raise it back up. More ships drop from the sky in the Final Chapters, one even directly onto the Terminal (the Kuyou). In PMMM: Rebellion, the zeppelins/airships fall to the ground when Homura comes to her realization. I.e. they are suspended during her 'dream', her obliviousness to the 'truth', they crash and burn when she realizes it and at the same time understands the horror of the reality of what's going on. If Gintama is a dream (with Gintoki being a dead person dreaming) then it would fit with the way the gags tend to crop up when things get 'too serious', how gags can be things that break reality's rules, like a time-stopping clock. Why everything shatters in the Final chapter. And if it's Gintoki's dream, then anyone he knows in the cast can be altered by the gags because it's his dream. Would that make the instances of the ships crashing as little 'shockwaves' to his dream then? Little 'shakes' to wake him up? Or tremors to a 'daydream' that he wants to believe in? (Does the final chapter imply that Tama becomes the 'new' dreamer?) And Dreams... are very present in Gintama. Takasugi is mentioned to be dreaming in Rakuyou, and there's that whole thing in Silver Soul when he fights Enshou. Maizou and Suzuran talk about an unsetting moon, a dream they won't wake up from. The Love Potion arc also talks about dreams, (e.g; using 'yume' as a reading for 'love' etc). The Love Potion arc which has another link with fire and insects, Hotaru (her name means 'firefly' with Sorachi specifically using the version of the kanji with the 'fire' radicals in it, but also there's all the incense. Her mentions of 'illusion' too. And she even has the same pine tree/sakura kimono pattern as Takasugi on her haori. There are even butterflies on her throne. Hotaru has very strong Takasugi vibes, is what I'm saying).
About how Sasaki-Nobume is paralleled with Shouyou-Gintoki. Which makes me think about how Sasaki & Nobume shared a bond of eating doughnuts together. Doughnuts. Holes. Devouring the circle (ouroboros?) around the hole, and in so doing making the hole ('void'. utsuro) disappear. And also wondering about Nobume claiming that she would swing her sword (read: her soul, so basically 'living'?) for herself. If Gintoki joined the war to fulfil that promise from Shouyou, to protect Takasugi and Katsura and Shouka Sonjuku's students (so that Shouyou would come back?), and he swung his sword again in Courtesan of A Nation arc also because of that promise, then... was he ever truly swinging his sword for himself, or was he swinging it for Shouyou and that promise's sake? Was he learning to swing his sword for what he wanted, throughout the series? (Shinpachi Punch in Four Devas -> Katsura telling him his old friends are fine now so go fight for his new friends -> his wavering when he went back to Edo after leaving the Yorozuya)

gintama is about a guy that did the saddest, most terrible thing you could ever imagine, losing everything he had in the process, and that says “I haven’t lost anything”; and gintama is a series premised on bakumatsu japan being catapulted into sci-fi levels of alien technology, and whose every opening includes a nostalgic before and after, that says “in this town where not a single thing has changed, we are the ones who are changing”
