Fermat's Last Theorem by Simon Singh
Rating: 5 stars Pages: 340 Tagged: educational
I love love Simon Singh's The Code Book, but somehow had never read his probably more famous Fermat's Last Theorem. Well, I set out to finally change that, and I really loved this book. Singh remains the King of mathematical pop science books, taking the reader through much of the history of mathematics through the lens of discoveries and techniques related to Fermat's Last Theorem, starting with Pythagoras and continuing through to the 90s with what was at the time some of the most ground-breaking mathematics. He makes complex topics extremely approachable, and managed to make me excited about conjectures and theorems I knew nothing about.

True Love Bites by Joy Demorra
Rating: 4 stars Pages: 377 Tagged: couldnt-put-down, relaxing, these-bitches-gay, vampires
This was a long-awaited read for me, I'm a big fan of @thebibliosphere and was writing for the vibes to be right to finally read this. And boy, was it worth it. This was so totally adorable, and I really loved Vlad and Nathan's dynamic. I liked the Pratchett-esque approach to fantasy, with political & social commentary woven trough a sort of industrial-revolution-era fantasy world. It's definitely the best of both worlds, with balls and very cute romance, combined with fantasy lore and exploration of chronic illness. I found Nathan's story to be very real and relatable, and him finally being listened to by a doctor almost made me cry. All in all, this was wonderfully written and often very funny (I liked the frequent puns), and I really hope I get to see more of Ursula in the next book because her dynamic with the other guys was great :)

Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert
Rating: 5 stars Pages: 400 Tagged: couldnt-put-down, romance
I was looking forward to reading this ever since Eve first showed up in Chloe Brown, and it was not a let down! It was just so adorable, I loved the setting (a B&B with an upcoming gingerbread festival?! c'mon that's perfect), and Eve's journey of realising she has autism was realistically and beautifully written. An all around great romance!

Neuromancer by William Gibson
Rating: 1 star Pages: 268 Tagged: dystopian, hard-scifi, unfinished
Here's another old review! I read this a very long time ago, so maybe it's worth a re-read, but honestly my memory of it is so negative I'm not sure if it's worth it! It clearly had a lot of fantastic ideas, but the execution was more confusing than intriguing. I'd like to at least be able to work out what the book's about!

Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert
Rating: 4 stars Pages: 400 Tagged: couldnt-put-down, these-bitches-gay, romance
I loved 'Get a Life, Chloe Brown' so much that this managed to end up slightly disappointing, despite being a very solid 4-star read. The romance is very cute, just less relatable, and I'm not so much of a fan of fake dating & social media fame as plot points. Warning as with the previous one that this is very heavy on the smut (at least for me), so be ready for it!

Get a Life, Chloe Brown
Rating: 5 stars
Pages: 384
Tagged: couldnt-put-down, romance
Holy shit, one of the best romance books I've ever read. I don't think I've ever identified so much with the main character of a book. I loved the exploration of how chronic pain affects your life & relationships, without it being too much (or the conclusion being that you can't have relationships, romantic or otherwise!). This was saccharine-sweet, and also pretty seriously smutty, so warning for that!

we need more phrases in the vein of 'a monad is just a monoid in the category of endofunctors'. short, snappy, unhelpful, and debatably not even true. quantum physics is just a self-adjoint hamiltonian on a hilbert space. i like the redundancy there, and how it over- and underspecifies

Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins
Rating: 4 stars
Pages: 422
Tagged: adult-fiction, interesting-format
Many people have a formative book in their life, and while I have many, this would make the list by any metric. My childhood dog's official name according to the Kennel Club was Skinny Legs and All, and while we called her Morgan, the name still intrigued me. When I found this on the shelf as a kid who read voraciously, I never stopped to consider whether it was for me, or even what it's about. It's especially relevant now, much of it discussing tensions in the Middle East, but I certainly didn't understand it then. Its a really fascinating book, and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in a book that's a bit weird.
