The One Where They Finally Get Together
The time for world juniors came by fast and you were already on a plane heading to Canada. You had gotten picture of the guys getting on the plane before boarding yourself. You sat next to Logan and the two of you spent most of the flight talking about random things and making plans for all of the dumb things you would do once you landed. Time seemed to fly and the tournament was crazy. You and Logan as well as a few of the other guys got into all sorts of shenanigans all while Jimmy sat back and watched. One night after the game was over and there wasn’t one the next game you said fuck it and got thouroghly intoxicated. You don’t remember too much but you remember knocking on someones door.
“It’s 1 in the morning really Logan,” Jimmy grumbles as he opens the door in just a pair of basketball shorts. If it weren’t for that fact you were drunk you would have been a lot more fazed but you had one thing on your mind making amends.
“Look I get you hate me because you think the whole date with Matthew was a prank but it wasn’t. I didn’t know you were going to be there so when I saw you I freaked out and left. I’m sorry I did that. It was a really bad thing of me to do and I understand that you have every right to be mad at me but I just want you to know I’m sorry. I don’t want you to hate me because I really like you and that’s why Matthew sent the whole thing up. He was trying to set us up and I freaked out. I shouldn’t have walked out like that and I hope one day you can stop hating me or at least start talking to me again. Goodnight Jimmy,” and with that you walked off but not before Jimmy did the only logical thing in his mind. He chased after you barefoot, shirtless, without a phone, and a key to get back into his hotel room.
“Look I should have listened to your side earlier. I’m sorry I didn’t. I was just so frustrated because this girl who is seemingly my dream girl is interested in me. That seemed to good to be true so when you walked out I assumed it was a prank and I just built up a barrier because I didn’t know what else to do,” Jimmy calls out causing you to turn around.
“Hey it’s okay. We both messed up but it got us here. We’re talking again and that’s what matters in the long run right?” you question.
“Right. Now I feel really dumb but I kind of left all my stuff in my room including my key,” Jimmy trails off.
“I have an extra bed. We’ll figure it out tommorrow,” you shrug. The two of you walk to your room and you walk in. You turn on the shower and while Jimmy instantly falls asleep you throw up before getting into the shower. Once you are done you get out advil for the next morning and fall asleep.
The next morning you almost scream when you wake up and see the extra bed occupied but then you remember the bits and pieces of last night and think to yourself whatever happened is a good thing because Jimmy’s talking to you again. You take the advil and turn over in bed. You were never drinking like that again. Jimmy stirs and the you hear a grumble and then he gets out of bed. You sit up and take in the sight of his bare back. He was good looking you weren’t going to deny it. After a moment he turns around and you quickly advert your sight.
“Hey um thanks for letting me crash here last night,” Jimmy says not sure what else he should say.
“Yeah of course. I wouldn’t leave you stranded like that,” you smile at the boy.
“Also I’m sorry I’ve been such a dick to you lately. I just throught ignoring you would prevent me from getting pranked again. I should have heard out,” he sighs.
“Hey it’s okay. We’ve both made mistakes but it’s okay,” you look at him and you can tell he feels bad. But you both messed up and now you’re here. He’s in your hotel room and the two of you are talking and the drunked stupor you were in last night ended up fixing everything between the two of you. Your eyes dart around the room and you know he should definitely be getting back soon but you had to be careful. If anyone saw him leave your room in this state things would get messy and rumors would fly around like there was no tomorrow which could cause you to lose your position as team photographer.
“How am I going to get back to my room?” Jimmy questions breaking you out of your transe.
“I have your roommates phone number. But you should probrally put more clothes on and shoes before you head back,” you sigh before running a hand through your hair.
“Okay and where am I going to get said clothes from?” Jimmy questions. You get out of bed reach into your suitcase and grab a t-shirt as well as a random pair of flip flops before handing them to the boy.
“There you have clothes and shoes. Do you want me to call Logan now?” you question as he puts a shirt on.
“Yeah sure. I should probrally get back before coach gets suspicious,” he shrugs. Your phone call with Logan is short and thankfully he’s more than willing to keep the fact that Jimmy was in your room last night a secret. He’s mainly just happy that things should go back to normal once the three of you go back to Minnesota. You walk Jimmy back to his room and ignore Logan’s pointed look before heading back to your own room. If you didn’t have to worry about game photography today, you were going to the hot tub. You go to bed early tonight knowing you would probably be up with the boys getting into some type of trouble tomorrow since it was New Years Eve. The boys end up winning their game and go out to celebrate. A few of the boys who were 19 decided to test their luck in the bars while you hung out with a few of the other guys. Of course, with it being New Year's Eve a few of the guys who were bold enough asked you to be their New Year's kiss. Your favorite was when Cutter came over his face beet red and a few of the boys laughing.
“So it’s New Years Eve,” he says.
“It appears it is,” you hum.
“I was wondering if you would be my New Year's kiss?” he questions. You look at him with an eyebrow raised before looking at the other boys.
“Oh, William, I’ll tell you what if it’s midnight and you still haven’t found a girl to kiss you, I’ll be your New Year's kiss but for now I’ll give you this,” you place your lips on his cheek and walk away as you see the boys go crazy. You laugh as his face is somehow redder than before then sit down at the hotel bar. The bartender makes you a drink remembering you from the night before and then places it in front of you.
“So how do you know all those boys?” she questions.
“Well, I go to school with a few of them but for the rest I’m their team photographer,” you respond as you take a sip of your drink.
“So, I know this isn’t exactly professional of me, but do you think you could set me up with one. I mean it doesn’t have to be a long-term thing because I know you aren’t from here.”
“Yeah sure, I should be able to do that,” you smile.
“The one who came up to you. The last one, you don’t have anything going on with him right?” she asks. You laugh and shake your head.
“Cutter no. He’s a sweetheart but we don’t have anything going on. I promise,” you hold out your pinkie and she laughs before interlocking hers with yours. The two of you talk inbetween the few customers she has and soon it’s 11:30. You excuse yourself and go to find Cutter. It doesn’t take long because he’s right where he last was. Sitting with the small group of boys who are whispering about something or someone.
“So, I might have found you an even better New Year's kiss,” you whisper to the boy and watch as his eyes go wide. He quickly gets up from the circle and looks at you.
“Who?” he questions.
“Well what do you think of miss bartender over there?” you question.
“Well she’s a smokeshow a real beaut but there’s no way she’d go for me,” he responds staring at her.
“I wouldn’t be so sure because it just so happens that she wants you to be her New Year's kiss,” you watch as his reaction changes and he becomes a lot more confident and then looks back at you.
“Really? You’re being dead seriuos,” he questions.
“I’m not joking. I’ll introduce you to her but I need one small favor.”
“Shit anything you name it.”
“What are the odds you happen to know the wear-a-bouts of a certain player?”
“Probrally pretty high. If they went to the program we all had a life 360 as a joke. Just tell me who.”
“Promise you won’t judge me or say anything.”
“Yeah sure,” he shrugs.
“No Cut please,” you beg.
“Yeah I won’t judge or you tell anyone okay.”
“It’s Jimmy,” you respond after a second and watch the emotions on his face go from happy to confused to happy once again. The boy pulls his phone out and checks Jimmy’s location before handing it to you.
“Does that make sense to you? He’s in the hotel but not on our side,” Cutter says confused. You zoom in a little and see he’s exactly where your room would be.
“Yeah that makes perfect sense to me. Now let’s go introduce you to your woman,” you say dragging him by the arm. The introduction is as quick as can you can make it before you are rushing off to your room. Thankfully you are on the same floor so when you get off the elevator you see Jimmy a few doors dowm and rush after him. You know it has to be close to midnight and you really have one shot at this so you have to be quick about it.
“Hey Jimmy,” you call out.
“Oh hey,” he smiles at you and it takes everything in you to not kiss him then and there.
“Do you want to watch the fireworks together? My room has a balcony,” you offer knowing that way the two of you would be alone.
“Sure,” he responds and the two of you head to your room. You get back and look at the time. 11:53. Shit theres not a lot of time to do this. You quickly grab the bottle of wine from your fridge before going out to the balcony. You open the bottle and take a sip before offering it to Jimmy. He qwirks his eyebrow at you causing you to laugh.
“Jimmy half of your teammate are out at random bars drinking who knows what but you’re afraid of some wine,” you roll your eyes before taking another sip.
“Fine hand it over,” he responds before taking the bottle from you. He takes a rather large sip and you just shake your head.
“Easy kid I’m not going to take it away from you,” you laugh as he hands it back. You take another sip before handing it back to him and he does the same thing. It’s when he does it the 5th time you say something.
“Jim look I’m glad your not afraid of some wine but why are you just about chugging it?” you question almost laughing. He hands the bottle back to you and takes a step closer.
“Because I need courage,” he say and that’s when you heard the faint count down.
10-9-8-7
“For what?” you question?
6-5-4
“To do this,” he says.
3-2 and then the count down hits 1 and his lips are on yours and you drop the bottle of wine out of pure shock causing Jimmy to pull away thinking he completely fucked everything up. Then you grab him by the sweatshirt and pull him back in as your lips meet his once again. The two of you kiss as the fireworks go off not even caring to look at them. Your hands are around his neck place with his hair while his wrap around your waist. When you eventually pull away you rest your forehead against his before placing one last kiss on his lips.
“You know you didn’t have to drink all that wine to kiss me. I was going to do it if you didn’t,” you laugh.
“What?” he says not believing it completely.
“You know I like you and the reason I wanted you to come here is so there wouldn’t be 10 people watching us kiss,” you look as the boy his face in shock.
“I can’t believe it. The pretty girl wanted to kiss me on new year's,” he says looking at you cupping your jaw.
“Well now I think you owe me a date,” you giggle.
“Oh do I now?” he questions.
“But first miraculously the wine bottle didn’t break so I think it’s a sign that we have to finish it once we go inside,” you smile pulling him back towards you and giving him another kiss.
“Okay whatever you say,” he just shakes his head at you.
The next morning, you both wake up but this time in the same bed and you help sneak him back to his room before you call Matthew to tell him everything. You promise that once you get back you can redo the double date, but you and Jimmy have to go on an actual date first. The tournament goes by fast and soon you’re on the flight back and U.S.A. has a bronze medal.

The One Where Things Come Crashing Down
After dinner on Friday night it didn’t take long for Matthew to show up at your place.
“I told you to drop it Matthew,” you look at him, tears streaming down your face. Matthew had never seen you cry. In your entire year of friendship, he had never seen it happen once so for him to be the cause of it felt like a million knives stabbing him everywhere.
“I’m sorry I just thought you were scared or embarrassed of liking a freshman. I didn’t think it was anything more than that,” Matthew shifts from foot to foot unsure of what to do.
“The reason I transferred her was because of my ex. The situation was bad. Really bad to the point where I almost died. It started out good, everything was sunshine and rainbows but soon things went bad. He got abusive and I tried to leave but he would threaten me, and I just couldn’t leave.”
“I’m so sorry I didn't know.”
“I know. But that’s why I haven’t dated anyone in the past year or taken interest in any guys. I just wasn’t ready yet but then well you know where we are right now.”
“I’ll fix this.”
“It’s okay Matthew. I’ll talk to him.”
“How about I tell him my part of how you had no idea he was going to be there and then you tell him whatever else you want to. Deal?”
“Deal.” You and Matthew spend most of the weekend together and when Monday comes around you go and talk to Jimmy after practice. You had watched how he avoided Matthew most of practice and you knew it wasn’t a good sign but when you get the text from Knies says Jimmy told him that what happened was in the past you took it as a good sign. You went up to talk to Jimmy and were quickly brushed off as if you didn’t exist. You blink back the tears and smile at Matthew when he comes out of the locker room. He comes over and you tell him that everything is okay even though it isn't. The same thing continues for the next month. Every time you see Jimmy after practice or a game, he pretends you are invisible and it’s killing you. Eventually you have to enlist his roommate. As you knock on Jimmy’s door you hear shuffling.
“Did you forget your key again?” Jimmy asked before opening the door.
“Look I’m sorry about the date I-” you start but then Jimmy cuts you off.
“Save it. I get the guys pranking me but I didn’t think you would stoop that low,” he slams the door and you slide down the wall next to his door breaking down in sobs. You didn’t understand how this boy who was so sweet to everyone was breaking your heart like this and he didn’t even know how you felt about him. You don’t know how long you are like that but soon Matthew is coming and you have never been more grateful to see him in your life.
“What happened? I got a call you were here. I thought everything was back to normal and you guys were, okay?” Matthew looks at you. You shake your head and grab his hand to stand up.
“I lied because I didn’t want you to worry. But I came here and he thinks the whole thing was a prank. He hates me Matty,” you whisper as the tears start to pile up. You look at the light and quickly blink so you don’t start crying before Matthew wraps his arms around you.
“We’ll figure it out. Okay?”
“I don’t know what there is to figure out Matty. He hates me.”
“I’ll talk to him or I don’t know.”
“It’s useless. I’ll just figure something out. I’ll be okay.” You smile and Matthew knows it’s a load of crap but he drops it. The two of you walk to get ice cream before he has to leave for a date with Abby leaving you alone with your thoughts. You sit in your empty apartment and can’t help but wonder if he’ll ever forgive you. That’s when you get the email. One other secret you had been keeping is that you had applied to be a photographer for the world juniors hockey tournament. You know it was a bit of a stretch but you had always been into photography and you had done a lot of sports photography. This was the email saying the position was yours. You were officially team USA’s photographer. Your rather shitty day had gotten a lot better.
That night you go to bed with a smile on your face. You were happy and things were starting to look up. The rest of your week went by rather fast and soon it was game day. You went to the boy's game and they won. You congratulated Matthew and Brock before smiling at Jimmy as you left. You had decided you didn’t care if he was going to be a dick to you. You could be the bigger person and just ignore it and be nice to him anyways. It didn’t matter anymore. You were done caring.

The One Where He Tells Her She's Pretty
Tumblr media
Jimmy woke up the next morning to a sight he wishes he didn’t have to look at. He had unfortunately gotten rather used to. His roommate was doing something with whatever girl he brought home the night before. He quickly grabbed his stuff for practice and left to get to the rink early. At least that way he could be alone with his thoughts. Or so he thought. It didn’t take him long to realize the rink wasn’t empty, but Knies was in fact already there working on some stuff.
“Hey,” Jimmy greeted the boy before he went to change into something he could skate in.
“Hi Jimbo,” Matthew smiles at the boy. Jimmy looks up from his stall and looks at Knies. He has a look on his face that Jimmy isn’t sure if he likes.
“What’s that look for?” Jimmy questions.
“Oh nothing. It’s just a little birdy told me that there’s someone who likes you,” Matthew says as Jimmy's face lights up.
“Who?” Jimmy questions.
“Oh, you already know,” Matthew bumps into Jimmy and Jimmy smiles. Practice goes by and soon Jimmy is leaving and that’s when he sees her waiting for Brock and Matthew. He smiles at her, and she waves at him, and he decides to make a bold move and talk to her.
“Hi,” Jimmy says looking at the girl. She was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.
“Hi,” she smiles at him.
"You look pretty today. You always look pretty but it's different today," Jimmy says and the girl smiles.
"Well thank you. You look good," she smiles, and Jimmy feels himself getting warm inside.
"Do you want to go out with me sometime?" Jimmy doesn't know what came over him when he asks the question. But then the door opens and the two-part ways. Jimmy goes to his dorm, and he watches as she walks away, and he can’t help but smile to himself. Then he realizes he never got an answer to his question. The next day he gets a text, but little does he know she gets the same one. He’s being set up on a double date with Matthew and Abigail. He hadn’t met Abigail, but he had heard stories of her. She was nice but an interesting person to say the least. Jimmy went to his classes and then the gym before getting ready for his date. Jimmy walked with a slight skip to his step. He knew who the other person was that he was going on a date with. The girl he had heart eyes for since the first time he was her. Little did he know things were about to take a turn for the worse. As he walks into the restaurant, he tells the hostess who he’s waiting for, and she leads him to the table. That’s when he sees her. She has her back turned to him, but Matthew notices him right away. When the conversation goes quiet, she turns to look for the reason. Jimmy sits down across from her and that’s when things take a turn for the worse. He watches her beautiful face fall from its previous smile to something unreadable. Jimmy doesn't understand they were talking, and things were fine yesterday.
“I can’t do this,” is all she says before leaving the table. Jimmy watches as Abby gives Matthew a look before chasing after the girl.
“What the fuck Matthew,” Jimmy says walking out. Jimmy slowly walks back to his dorm. The skip he had in his step is gone. His hands are in his pockets and his head hung low. He can’t believe he fell for a stupid prank but worse enough he can’t believe she would be in on something like that. He changes out of his clothes then packs a bag thankful it's the weekend. He doesn’t even tell his roommate he’ll be gone. He figures he wouldn’t notice anyway. It doesn’t take long for Jinny to get home, and his mom can sense something is off. She sits him down at the dining room table. She makes him tell her everything which wasn’t too much since he kept her rather updated about the girl. She hugs her son then makes him dinner knowing he hasn’t eaten yet. Jimmy takes that weekend to do a hard reset. He could deal with Knies on the ice. He had dealt with bad teammates in the past as for her. Well, he was going to have to avoid her and not talk to her. It didn’t seem too hard. Did Jimmy exactly like that idea no, but it was going to be what was best for him in the long run. He didn’t want to get played again and this was a sure way to avoid it.
Jimmy went to practice on Monday Matthew was all prepared with an explanation and an apology. Jimmy went the entire practice avoiding one-on-one time with Matthew. That was until he was quite literally cornered by him after practice.
“Look Jim about Friday-” Matthew started.
“Man, what happened on Friday is the past. Let's forget about it so we can play hockey,” Jimmy says before skating off leaving Matthew shocked. Jimmy was over it if he was being honest. Like he said what happened was in the past for him and Matthew and hockey was more important to him. To an outsider it would appear that everything was fine until Jimmy walked out of the locker room and the girl. The same one he had been head over heels for went up to him and tried to explain to him he walked past her as if she was nothing.

The One Where She Like's a Boy
Tumblr media
When you got back to Minnesota everything slowed down. You were always on edge, and you didn’t leave your apartment unless you had to go to class. Since your schedule was different it was easier to avoid Brock and Knies. You stuck to that schedule until one night Brock showed up with pizza after a whole month of not seeing you. You were about to pretend you weren’t there but then you remembered Brock had a spare key, so it was no use. As you slowly opened the door, he embraced you before stepping inside.
“I missed you,” Brock says as he sets down the pizza.
“I’m sorry I’ve been gone so much. When I was in Boston, I saw him and things didn’t go well,” you whisper. Both boys look at you and now understand everything but also feel horrible. They haven’t seen you since before you left for break and now knowing the reason was you feared for your own safety.
“No, I'm sorry. I thought you were mad at me and so I let you have some space thinking you would get over it. I should have checked on you sooner especially knowing you were going home,” Brock says as he brings you into a hug. The two of you sit and watch a movie and soon things are back to normal. You started going out a little more and would once again go to the hockey games.
Eventually it came time for the boys to go to playoffs and you went with them. You watched as they lost to Michigan in the big ten tournament. It was a tough loss, but the boys still have the frozen four to look forward to. They beat their first and second opponents earning themselves a trip to Boston. As much as you wanted to support the boys it was Boston, the one place you hated more than anything. As you though to yourself Bryan wouldn’t no couldn’t know you were there. He had no way of knowing you went to the U and this time you wouldn’t leave your seat alone. The boys lost their first game and they went home.
The rest of the school year flew by and soon it was summer. The three of you went to a small cabin for a weekend before all heading your separate ways. Your summer goes by fast. You take some summer classes to keep yourself busy and you head back to Minnesota before you know it. While you weren’t back home the whole break it still felt like summer was almost over. You and Brock hangout almost every day during the rest of the summer. You two act like kids again and everything was amazing. You felt so free.
But then school started, and boy was junior year crazy. Hockey practices started early in the school year and with Brock being captain you two started hanging out less and less. Thankfully Knies was there to entertain you. The two of you would do all the things you and Brock would do. You would still of course hang out with Brock when the time permitted but most of the time it was just you and Matthew. During one of the times, you were waiting for practice to end you watched the boys skate on the ice. You were always mesmerized by the sport, but you never could quite grasp the whole shooting a puck thing. Your body couldn’t do it so your dream of playing hockey with your brothers stopped right then and there. You were content watching. So that’s what you would do. As soon as practice ended you made your way to the locker room and waited for Matthew and Brock. The three of you were going to go watch a movie at your place tonight. As the two boys walk out you catch a glance at one of the freshmen who walks out in front of them. You were still trying to put names to faces but you knew he was either Logan or Jimmy because he was on the same line as Knies. You smile at him and try not to giggle as his face turns a slight shade of red. Brock leaves as soon as the movie finishes leaving you and Matthew alone.
“So, are they any cute freshmen?” Knies questions. You thank Matt for making sure you had a great poker face before answering Matthews' question.
“No. But why are the freshmen they’re too young?” you know they aren’t too young and there are definitely freshmen on the team who are older than you. But you still push the question.
“Well, it’s not like there are any transfers so I’m just wondering,” he shrugs.
“Well nope. No boys,” you respond.
“Any girls?” he questions, not quite understanding the complete lack of interest in men you have.
“No, it’s not that. I just don’t want to date anyone right now,” you shrug and with that the topic gets dropped for now.
It doesn’t take you long to figure out the boy you smiled at is Jimmy. He’s from Minnesota and drafted by the St. Louis Blues. Your gaze tends to linger on him at practice and it doesn’t take long for Matthew to notice. What you don’t notice is Jimmy looking at you like you hung the moon. He looks at you like you hung the moon and that's when he puts his plan in motion. He knows that the two of you are going to hang out after practice. He also knows he can definitely get the information that she likes Jimmy wiggled out of her one way or another. You wait for Knies at the locker room door and smile at Jimmy when he walks out. Your attention turns to Matthew which is good because poor Jimmy is so distracted by you. So distracted in fact that he runs into a door on the way out. Matthew, who watches the whole thing go down, bites back a laugh at the boy's misfortune before the two of you walk to get coffee. Once you both have your beverages Knies starts his plan to get you to admit you like Jimmy.
“So, I heard a few of the freshmen have a crush on you,” he says.
“Oh, and where did you hear this?” you laugh.
“Well, a few of them asked me to set you up with them. There's one of them is too shy to even say hi to you but he definitely likes you a lot,” Knies shrugs.
“Well, if they want a date so bad, they should ask. It would be fun to knock a few of their egos down a few pegs when I say no,” you respond sipping on your drink.
“You wouldn’t say yes to anyone. Not even Jimmy,” Matthew knows he has you on a dangerous line right there. He watches as your eyes scan his face before you set your drink down.
“Fine there is a small chance I would say yes to Jimmy but not right now,” you say finally.
“So, I can give him your number then,” Matthew asks.
“No, I didn’t say that-”
“Why not? He likes you and he’s a good kid.”
“There’s more to it Matthew. Things you don’t know.”
“What don’t I know then. Enlighten me,” he leans back looking at you.
“It's hard, okay. drop the Jimmy thing please,” you beg.
“Yeah, sure we can talk about something else,” Matthew says finishing his coffee.

The One Where Matt Rescues Her
Tumblr media
You hated online school with a passion, but you loved the amount of free time you had. You were able to take all your classes online and the rest of the school year went by fast for you. It was nice being somewhere new for a change. Plus, you got to travel everywhere with Matt, so you go to see many different places. When the school year was over the two of you went back to Massachusetts. While Matt trained most of the time and you stuck inside scared. Scared of what would happen if you ventured outdoors. Matt and the rest of your family hated this so for 3 weeks everyone went to Europe. It was a nice distraction for you and a break for everyone else. But before you knew it, summer was over, and it was time to go back to college. But this time it was in person, and you didn’t have Matt to lean on. Thankfully there was someone you knew there from one of Matt’s many hockey teams. Unto your knowledge Matt sent him a text briefly outlining your situation. He also asked him to keep a look out for you. Of course, Brock said yes. Not only did he have sisters who he would want his teammates to do this for, but he was that type of person.
It didn’t take long for you and Brock to reconnect. You ended up having a class together. While you were on the lookout for any sign of your ex he was trying to get to class on time. He slid into the seat next to you. After class the two of you get coffee and talk for a while catching up and that's when the big question comes your way.
“Hey so I don’t mean to pry but why the switch? You don’t have to answer I’m curious,” Brock questions. He takes note of the way your eyes glance around the room before you inhale.
“Well, it’s sort of a long story but I won’t bore you with the details. Well, I dated a bad guy, and I thought things were going well until they weren’t. I’d be covering bruises all the time. I couldn’t leave without being afraid of mine or another person's life being seriously harmed so I never did. Until one night it was bad. He drugged me and I couldn’t move or do anything by the time he finished. I don’t remember much but after that I left Boston. I don’t ever plan on going back unless I have to,” you look at Brock knowing it was a lot you dumped on him. All he does is open his arms in a hug which you are happy to receive.
It doesn’t take long for the two of you to hang out a lot more often. Study sessions turn into meeting the team and dinners at his house. He becomes the brother you were missing with Matt still being gone. You and Brock do almost everything together until Matthew complains he’s lonely. You notice early on when you meet the team that the forward and defenseman have an interesting relationship. Soon your and Brock’s study sessions are getting interrupted. Not long after there’s another person who tags along to dinner. After a while the three of you become a trio. Everything is great. You have weekly movie nights at your apartment where you, and Brock make fun of Knies. This week it's for his failed attempt at flirting with women. You let your guard down and that’s when things take a turn for the worse.
During winter break you go home. Instead of coming back to Minnesota right away you stay in Massachusetts. Rumors soar around that Matt will be making his debut against the Bruins. But you aren’t the only person who hears those rumors, and your ex is sure to buy a ticket to that hockey game. Christmas comes and goes, and those rumors of a debut get confirmed as true when Matt makes his rookie lap. You all scream and cheer proud to see him in the NHL. The boys end up winning the game with Matt getting the game winning goal. Everything is great until you see him. You are walking to the bathroom when you see Bryan. You knew you should have accepted your moms offer of her coming with you, but you also didn’t want to be afraid. You quickly run into the bathroom hoping he didn’t see you but boy were you wrong. As soon as you walk out you feel a hand grip your wrist. You try to break free, but you aren’t strong enough.
“Where are you off to in such a hurry baby?” he questions.
“Away from you. Now let me go before I get the police involved. I'm not joking,” you seethe looking him in the eye pretending to not be afraid but inside you are shaking. He looks at you and laughs before dragging you with him. You gulp and don’t know what to do when Matt comes out of nowhere and saves you.
“Hey Bryan get the fuck away from my sister,” Matt says, and Bryan lets go before walking away. You collapse on the floor and Matt runs to you pulling you close to him.
“Matt,” you whisper between the sobs. Matt rubs your back as you cry against him.
“I’m here for you. I have you,” he says, and your cries calm down.
“I’m sorry I ruined your debut,” you look up at your brother and he wraps his arms around you.
“You didn’t ruin anything. Now let's get to our family before they start to worry. We can talk about this later,” Matt responds before the two of you walk back toward your family. Little did the two of you know that wouldn’t be the last either of you would see of Bryan.

The One Where Matt Saves Her
Tumblr media
Matt wasn’t normally one for parties but they had just swept a weekend series and Matt got the game winning goal so he decided to tag along. As he walks in he sees his baby sister standing by her douche of a boyfriend. Matt smiles at her as he walks into the kitchen and grabs himself a bottle of water. He knew most of the guys were going to be drinking plus he was fine with being the designated driver. A few girls come and talk to him throughout the night but he doesn’t give them his full attention as he watches the boy interact with his sister.
While he stands there he can’t help but think of the night many months ago the two met and how he wishes he would have done anything to have stopped it. His sister had begged him to let her tag along to a college party just once and he reluctantly said yes. He figured if he was with the girl no guy would be dumb enough to approach her but boy was he wrong. Matt knew Bryan could be trouble from stories but he only had pleasant interactions with the lacrosse player. The two had classes together and he all-in-all seemed decent to Matt which is why he didn’t mind the boy talking to his sister. He saw her smile and laugh and Bryan asked her on a date which she was quick to say yes to. One date turned into two and then three and soon they were happily together. Or so it seemed. Eventually Bryan’s true self started to show through and that’s when the bruises started. At first she said it was her clumsiness but when she went home for Christmas and strictly wore turtlenecks Matt knew it was something much more.
He didn’t know how to bring it up at first so he didn’t until she called him one night late. Much later than she should have been up begging him to come pick her up. Bryan was going through a fit and was screaming and throwing things. She was scared and didn’t know what to do. When Matt picked her up he almost cried. How could his poor baby sister be in such a mess. They got to his apartment and had a long talk. She told Matt she couldn’t just leave him not while she was her. He would find her and threaten a friend or family and she couldn’t have anyone hurt. It was then the two decided that she would come with him to Minnesota or Iowa or wherever he ended up as soon as the season was over. She fell asleep crying on top of him. Matt started her transfer application to the University of Minnesota the next morning. She could hate him for it but at least that way she could take in-person classes the next fall semester.
As Matt looks at his baby sister still curled up against the asshole he wants to punch him and kick him and even kill him but he knows that won’t do him any good. So he just sits back and watches from afar as women flirt with him and throw themselves at him. Everything will be okay, he tells himself.
A month goes by and the boys are playing the last hockey game of the season for all they know. If they don’t win now this is it. Matt skates onto the ice and smiles up at her. She waves down at him. Everything is going to be okay and soon she will be done with that jackass Matt tells himself. But the boys lose and when Matt walks out of the locker room she isn’t the like she normally would be. Matt tries not to freak out but then he checks her location and it’s off. That’s when his face pales. He pretends to be calm as he walks to his car but in reality he doesn’t know what to do. He calls his parents and finally tells them what has been happening the past few months. He knows he should have told them sooner but in all honesty he thought things would have ended by now. Bryan has never been with a woman this long. Matt’s parents are thankfully already in the city as well as Michael. The four tried to think of everywhere she could be then went looking for her. Eventually Matt got a call from one of the boys at the lacrosse house. They had just found his sister and 911 was already on the way. Matt swallowed as he heard that. He spead to the house and haphazardly parked before running in the house. The guys told him which room they were in. Matt ran up there and found her bruised, bloody, and nearly beaten to death. As he sat there the ambulance and police arrived and Matt got in before texting everyone to let them know she had been found and was on her way to the hospital. Matt’s heart shattered as he looked at her. He failed his baby sister once and now he was supposed to take her hundreds of miles away. They wheeled her out and brought her into an emergency room just as the rest of the family got there. They all decided one thing. As soon as she was released she was leaving the city. The police questioned Matt and he told them all he knew. They thanked him for his time then left him to do his own thing.
When she was released the first thing she wanted to do was go home and shower. The second was to file a restraining order against Bryan. As soon as she was done with the police her and Matt packed their things and started the trip to Iowa. Matt made a vow to himself that he would never let anything like this happen to her again.
