GoFundMe for Owen
In the photo featured here is my best friend and his name is Owen. I’ve had him since I was eight-years-old, and for a very long time, he was the only face that I had to come home to after school when my parents worked long hours. He sleeps with me almost every night, he’s sweet as sugar, and now he needs help. I started realising Owen was in pain and I couldn’t figure out why. He wasn’t walking right, he wasn’t eating, and he couldn’t even sit up to jump on the couch or anything else without immediately jerking back and yowling in pain. He couldn’t lie down for more than a few seconds, and if he ever did, he was constantly wiggling around and trying to find a comfortable position. I couldn’t pick him up or even pet him without him wincing away or hissing. Worried, I rushed him to the only pet emergency hospital I knew about. Unfortunately, just a physical examination has not been able to tell us anything helpful. They want to do x-rays and a few other tests, but right now, I can’t afford them. The estimate they gave me was between upwards of $400 depending on how many he actually needed. Right now, he has pain medication to help ease his symptoms until I am able to do more, but most of my paycheck right now is going to student loans and rent, so scrapping together the rest to help right now is a mountain. I hate seeing him in pain, and while the medication is helping him through it, I know pills can’t be a fix forever if there is a more serious problem that needs address. I’m grateful, insanely grateful, for any help I might possibly be able to get, and I thank each and every one of you who might be able to do so from the bottom of my heart. Owen has saved me from my own demons and depression more times than I can count, and if I could help him in return, that would mean more to me than any words could ever express.
Even reblogs to boost signal help, anything at all helps, and I thank everyone who took the time to read this.

“...I’d like that.” Matvei agreed in a small voice, his smile returning stronger than before. ‘Us’ implied that, maybe, Laika might stick around while they ate. Or maybe just while he did. Still, while his body was still running strong from the heavy dose of pain-killers, it would be nice to enjoy the company of someone else. Especially if that someone was Laika. He didn’t trust anyone else on all the base even half as much -- save for his own navi.
“I’m not very picky about eating though. I’d be happy with anything you could carry easily. Just no mushrooms or peppers.” A childish request, but one he’d never fully grown out of. They were just so... gross. Squishy and gross. “Small might be better for now though.”

Matvei quickly concealed his wince with a small smile and waved off Laika’s theoretical pun. He didn’t doubt there was no malicious intent behind it, but he would be lying if it didn’t sting -- something Laika didn’t need to know. He didn’t want the situation getting even more upsetting.
“Food would be nice...” Matvei nodded and looked up at Laika, widening his smile with little effort. “But if we can... I’d rather eat in my room tonight. People stare at me a lot, and this will just make it worse.”

"It's easier to brush now too. I think you're lucky... Mine doesn't have this much volume at all. But I guess it would look weird on me... Ah, but here. You like it out of your face, right? If I made a little bun... most of it would be held back by that and your hat."
“It uhm, it’s pulling uncomfortably– mmn! There’s so many knots, is this what my mom has to put up with every morning? Do you have– ow!– do you have this many knots????”

“...no. But I also take care of my hair. You can’t treat it like short hair. That’s not how it works. You have to brush it every day. Sometimes twice a day. Here, this is detangler -- I’m going to spray it in.”

"What? All this? Oh, don't worry about it. It's safe. I promise. Just sit down. See? Doesn't the brush feel nice? :)"

Captain… come here and sit down.  I can handle that hair of yours.

Crutches. It was a minimal amount of hope, but hope. At least if he had crutches, he’d be able to keep building upper body strength. He’d have to re-train his legs, hard and strict, but it was half the work he expected to do. Or so he hoped.
“...no,” his voice was soft as he replied, but at least Laika’s gesture had made it easy enough for him to offer half a genuine smile. It was better than nothing. “I’ll just take the crutches, thank you for all your help.”
He needed to go; he needed to get out of here. He just... needed to not be in a hospital and away from eyes he couldn’t fully trust. As long as he could get them and get out, he’d be happy. All he could hope for now was that Laika understood.

Matvei’s smile fell slightly at the use of the word ‘friend.’ He had a history of people using that one on him, and never had it ended well. Still... a navi was a navi, and he was a human. He had a small advantage in that sense and he could always just... turn the monitor off if this strange little one was a jerk.
“A project,” Matvei repeated as he slid his chair closer to the desk and let his hand dip under the surface to brush his fingers along the underside. At least it would be a quiet nervous tick. “What kind of project?”
Something was obviously off about this not-Netto-Hikari’s-navi navi, but it would be rude to just start firing off questions. Or maybe that would just lock him out from getting answers at all. He’d just have to hope for the best. Probably. “Um, but yes, I know the captain.”
"I. Found. You~!"
Not expecting a new voice, Matvei jumped and looked up at the monitor of his PC, blinking owlishly. At first glance, the navi was strikingly familiar, a form he’d seen many times in news stories and photos, but something was… off. Granted, sight wasn’t Matvei’s strongest of senses, but he liked to think he knew a face well enough.
Besides… he’d never actually met Rockman or his operator. There was no reason for them to be here.
“…Um, hello.” Matvei lowered the book he’d been reading from and set it on his desk. “I guess you did.” He smiled, his expression as polite as it ever was for meeting a new party. “Did you need something?”

Matvei’s expression continued to fall as his shoulders curled inward and his gaze settled on the bed. Fencing was something he needed; as deeply a part of him as his blind eye or his very name. It was his escape from the world when it became too much and his most successful way of venting. He’d never told anyone about it, of course, but to suddenly have his means of coping ripped away for so long... It terrified him. He didn’t know if he’d be able to handle it. Having Laika close would be helpful, he knew, and he could hope it would all end well... but what if he had a depressive episode before the six months were over?
“...of course, captain,” Matvei looked up with his best smile and tried to relax. He didn’t need to worry Laika more. He didn’t. Laika had already done so much for him; he didn’t need this on his shoulders too. “You and the lieutenant are my favourite training partners.”

“S-six months?” Matvei’s eyes widened in alarm, staring at the medic as if he’d just been told he would never walk again. “But I--if I stop practicing my fencing--there has to be something we can do!” It was bad enough he still had the lieutenant smirking at him like he was some sort of newbie with a blade. He was frantic, desperate even. He couldn’t just stop fencing. If he went that long without a single practice spar... what if he lost everything he built up?
“I just...” His shoulders fell, the protests dying in his throat as he bows his head and tried to accept what was being said. The heavy feeling in his chest felt like someone was crushing him with their boot. It might not have been the worst outcome, but it felt closer to a death sentence.

“O-oh,” Matvei’s cheeks flushed as he released Laika’s jacket and looked down. “Um, sorry. I--yeah. I bet you’d rather walk.  I’ll just...” He coughed and wiggled around, doing his best to help the approaching medics as he was placed on the gurney. He really didn’t need to make any more trouble than he already was.
“Um, thank you -- all of you.” Gratitude would surely help ease the awkward atmosphere... right? He could hope. He really didn’t want to gain any more attention than he already had. The less attention he drew to himself, the better. If he could get his leg taken care of, he could try to slip out of the hospital and back to his room. It was his intention to keep away from all of this.
