Summary:

Yin Yu never expected to wake up again. When he does so as a small ghost fire, he finds himself stuck with Quan Yizhen (who has been nurturing his soul) until he can take on a more stable form and begin his afterlife anew. Or: Yin Yu's mortifying ordeal of being held gently in the hands of someone he convinces himself he hates, but definitely doesn't. If no paths are bound, there might even be healthy communication!

Emotional hurt/comfort, angst with a happy ending, hugs and holding hands!

I so dearly love how Hualian just never let anything fester. If there's a misunderstanding between them, or even an outright lie, or accidental arson and accidental injury, they always address it basically as soon as physically possible, and they're so understanding of each other's reasons and so quick to forgive. They never let resentment or doubt have any time to settle between them. They are so quick to pull up by the roots anything that might burrow down and harm their trust in one another. I just think that's really beautiful 😭

Folks... I have been making things like you wouldn't believe, and haven't been able to talk about ANY of it, for fear of spoiling these goods before they were ready. What we have here are mdzs and tgcf (and, as always, please support mxtx and the official translations! I will be doing so on top of making book art pieces!)

But, more relevantly, what we have here are the results of my efforts to learn hidden fore edge painting :3c

The Grandmaster Of Demonic Cultivation, jn three volumes! The outsides are pretty, but the inside edges are even prettier :D Art referenced from screencaps of The Untamed, done in ink and watercolor, then the edges faux-gilded with metallic acrylic ink

I've been neglecting art for a while now, and have never worked on a surface like this until a month ago, so I was/am extremely proud of my lines for these books!

Then, the watercolors. For anyone who's curious, I've been taking photographs and making notes to self, and intend to assemble those into instructions, for anyone who's interested :D

And getting images of this is very hard, so bear with me. It's much clearer irl than when I'm trying to light and film a two-handed job solo, haha

So then... I'm really, really, really ludicrously bad at self-control. I took like a day to recover. And then I was like well I HAVE to do tgcf! The symmetry gods demand it! Mdzs was rounded and backed, but the guillotine gets finicky with shoulders, so tgcf is an experiment in flat-backed binding, with fore edge art referenced from the donghua close.

Please note the single strand of red in each headband, and please note the way fabric orientation changes for the flashback books, and how the flashback books have dark endpapers, and how the two halves of book three have the same endpaper print in different colors. Both mdzs and tgcf have edge colors that were custom mixed to match the flavor of gold I wanted to use. Overthinking book design choices is so REWARDING!

No wip images here, I was finding my footing and moving faster, so here's the pre-hidden art, and a (silent) video of the final product :D

And so that! Is where I vanished to! I'm so, so excited to be able to finally share. I've reached a point where I'm confident in my ability to consistently make high-quality books, and I was worried I would get bored, but instead everything got so fascinating!

xie lian is good at pickling vegetables! 🥕🥬

this idea came from an mxtx author’s note about despite his.. interesting cooking.. xie lian is good at pickling. the vegetables just sit untouched in the brine, coming out normal (since xl’s cooking is that way because he “overly-innovates”) he’s been pickling for centuries, and because it’s the best side dish to have with steamed buns!

to hua cheng, it’s as tasty as all of xie lian’s dishes.. but “surprised they aren’t dead yet” is putting it lightly for fxmq’s reaction
