homeschooling in the US needs to be regulated but this is one of those conversations that immediately gets crushed by extremist conservatives and even well-meaning liberals will pipe up to be like "well some homeschooling is good!" when that's absolutely not relevant. regulation will not change anything for the homeschooling families who are serious about their children's education. the people who need to be regulated are the fringe extremists

this is something close to me because a big portion of my trauma was how from the ages of 11 to 19, i was raised exactly like this.
now, i wasn't raised by a fringe extremist right-winger (that was my stepdad and he was quite in-and-out), so i don't have a ton of experience with that, but i do have experience with the severe amounts of neglect that go into the lives of people who do not take the education of their children seriously, and the lack of regulation surrounding homeschooling in texas in particular, as that's where i was raised.
my mother pulled me out of school--something that i now know she was thinking about for a long time--and threw me into online schooling. maybe for the first year (ish), she took my sister and i into homeschooling groups and such, and then for some reason, eventually, we stopped going.
the pure lack of care and attention my mother put into the extremely impulsive decision to pull my sister and i out of school is palpable at every single turn. she honestly expected my sister and i as pre-teens, me being barely a couple of years into having brain damage, to take care of our own education responsibly, and when we failed, she abused and isolated us even further wherever she could, simply because there were no witnesses.
she gave up on homeschooling us properly herself, because turns out, homeschooling is an extremely involved process for your children to make sure that all of their needs, (i.e. social, nutritional, physical, MEDICAL, etc), are being met. she stopped giving two shits when she realized how hard it would be, but completely refused to admit it. she neglected the both of us harshly, and when we complained or struggled, she would gaslight us, verbally abuse us, physically abuse us, and more.
we had CPS and the cops come to my house twice, but because my mom had connections, nothing ever came of it.
the worst thing is that my mother had eventually convinced some friends of hers to do the same thing with their daughter, talking to them about how "easy" it was to homeschool a child, especially because of how lax the homeschooling laws in texas are.
this is all still extremely raw for me, only being 21 now and still living in the same house.
even outside the right wing extremists, people can, will, and DO use extremely lax homeschooling laws as easy ways to neglect and abuse their children without having any witnesses or documentation, and if they have connections with lawyers and law enforcement, it gets even worse. what i shared is just a piece of how bad it got for me, and it gets much, much worse for other people. i haven't even begun to work through everything that happened.
the number of children right now who are being abused, neglected, exploited, trafficked, who are being forced to work, abused in organized manners, who are living in cults, and more, all under the extremely lax laws of homeschooling in the US is immeasurable.
there needs needs NEEDS to be fucking regulation around homeschooling. there NEEDS to be social workers checking in on these families. the amount of damage it did to me and my sister to not have someone checking in on us and the life we were forced to live for so many years is unimaginable. more than that, even. the physical damage children can get from being chronically abused is permanent.
this needs to change.
homeschooling in the US needs to be regulated but this is one of those conversations that immediately gets crushed by extremist conservatives and even well-meaning liberals will pipe up to be like "well some homeschooling is good!" when that's absolutely not relevant. regulation will not change anything for the homeschooling families who are serious about their children's education. the people who need to be regulated are the fringe extremists

A genuine question for Systems

I feel like people are too sensitive around any form of fake claiming. I’m not saying that fake claiming is good and that people should listen to everyone who tells you your faking but hear some people out depending on what they’re saying.
If someone’s coming at you with “You’re not a real system. You’re faking it for attention.” Don’t listen to them. Their goal is to hurt you, and they don’t really care about helping people with OSDDID.
If someone is saying “Hey, based on the way you’ve explained your symptoms, I don’t believe that OSDDID is the proper diagnosis for you.” Or “Hey instead of OSDDID, I think your symptoms match better with X. Have you checked that out before?” Hear them out. They’re trying to help you find a diagnosis that would better help you, in the case that OSDDID isn’t right.
There is so much misinformation on the internet that it can become confusing to try and tell which symptoms are actual OSDDID symptoms, and which are symptoms people online claim are OSDDDID solely based on their personal experiences. It is also hard to objectively record your own symptoms.
I’m not saying immediately take their word for it, and completely drop the idea of OSDDID, but listen and see if maybe they have a point and if looking into what they suggested could benefit you.
I feel like any time someone’s system hood is challenged they get defensive. I’m all for the idea of self diagnosis, but if we refuse to adapt that self diagnosis as new evidence arrives, we limit ourselves to the diagnosis we’ve given and lose out on information that could be beneficial to you.
As an example. If someone came up to me like “Hey. I don’t think you have DID. With the way you’ve described your symptoms I think BPD is a better diagnosis for you.” I’ll look into BPD and maybe it does fit my symptoms and I realize I don’t have DID, or I realize I have both DID and BPD. Or it doesn’t fit my symptoms and I stick with my DID diagnosis.
I guess the better way to explain this, if someone fake claims your system, in a way that shows they’re genuinely trying to help you, hear them out. Take what they say with a grain of salt, and do more research. If I was misdiagnosis my symptoms, I’d want someone to tell me because how am I supposed to better myself and my life if I’m trying to adapt my life to the wrong diagnosis?

I’m SO curious, if you have OSDDID or a dissociative disorder, please vote on this and share it around. Smoking in this context is interchangeable with any THC consumption method (edibles, tinctures etc are included).

Big hot take when it definitely shouldn't be:
DISCLAIMER & CW: I'm strictly speaking on systems in adult bodies and only about littles who are stuck presenting as a little despite not being mentally one. Also, mention of pedophiles.
People need to stop being weird about littles who are dating other alters, adult presenting or not.
We personally have littles who can do anything an adult presenting alter can do and sometimes even more. Some adult alters can be even more mentally a child than some littles. Stripping the alter of the right to personal autonomy just because they're stuck presenting as a little is messed up. Especially making them or their partner feel like horrible people for doing so. No, it does not make anyone a pedo for anything. Like actually grow up.
It all depends on the specific system and alter whether or not their little/littles can or cannot do certain things. If it just so happens that a little presenting alter is not stuck mentally at a little age, it is no ones else's business besides their own system and themselves on what that they get up to.
Sometimes these types of littles being able to have that personal autonomy is healing, and making systems feel horrible for that is not only terrible to do but is also super anti-recovery.
Everyone's different and the community needs to stop harassing systems for healing in their own unique way.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk.
^^ yea. All littles are different , some littles aren't actually children, only appear as such. Some littles are kids, sure, but not all littles are and it's important to keep in mind the difference between alter age and alter maturity. They aren't the same. sometimes an alter may appear as an adult age wise but may be as mature as a kid and thats fine! same goes for alters that appear as kids but are as mature as adults.

Since the OP made their post unrebloggable (and blocked me. Both actions they are well in with their right to do)
I'm going to make my response it's own post because I think the point is important
-
As someone who is autistic and has BPD and CPTSD and loads of trauma yes you sometimes need to change how you interact with others to keep people around
When I was 13 I hit the few friends I had when I was angry
I had to change that in order to keep those friendships
When I was in my early 20s if I was losing an disagreement with my husband I would threaten to kill myself. My husband told me it hurt him and was cruel and manipulative behaviour, because it was.
So I worked hard to change that to keep my relationship
It's easy to say "I shouldn't have to change for others" and that's true to an extent. You shouldn't change your interests or passions or dim your light. And you should have space to be imperfect and flawed and not have to pretend your ugly bits aren't real. But if something you are doing it causing other people harm you kinda need to change that.
That's called "living in a society"
People adapt to each other and make space for each other in their lives. You adapt to them and they adapt to you
You start being more diligent about throwing away the empty toilet roll because it really bothers them. They start warning you before they run the blender because you hate loud noises
I stopped threatening to kill myself because I was mad I was losing an argument and my husband stopped being so vocally judgemental amount media he personally dislikes
There is a certain type of person who heard the phrase "your emotions are valid" and took that to mean "my emotional reactions and my behaviour are always objectively correct because my emotions are valid and if you have an emotional response or react to what I'm doing negatively then you are wrong and you can't be hurt because my emotions are valid"
And that's a recipe for disaster
Your emotions are valid to feel. They are how you feel and there are reasons you feel the way you do
However, your reactions and behaviour are something you can learn to control and can be irrational
We live in a society and we as people change each other as we interact and that isn't necessarily a bad thing
