What We Do in the Shadows
"Justification.
That’s all it takes, really: a bit of justification and some good old-fashioned stretching of the truth. If you can convince them, then you’re golden… but if you can convince yourself, then you’ve learned how to rationalize it all and can begin to cope with reality.
What we do in the shadows doesn’t make us any less good people when we stand in the light. There’s a separation there that we and everyone else never outright acknowledge, a sort of split in us: the duality of heinous actions under the cover of night and the general, savoury disposition we put forth when the sun looks down upon us.
But there is a sinister edge to the light as well, and that is when it truly illuminates; all secrets known, if you will. People fear the light because of what it might reveal, and they cling to the darkness because in it there is ignorance… and ignorance is bliss. It is by way of remaining ignorant that we begin to rationalize our decision to stand in the shade, to shield ourselves behind a veil of carefully-crafted lies and personas so as not to be unmasked when the truth of the light comes for us; it is our choice to remain shrouded that drags us into things most “normal” people would consider ghastly or uncouth.
As I said, it is justification, stretching the truth to suit our needs… rationalizing it all, that helps us cope with the reality of our situations. Poor decisions become reasonable ones, questionable choices become justified, and we are no longer in the wrong.
When the light shines upon us though, and realization dawns, we begin to understand that we have indeed made mistakes, and that those mistakes have turned us into monsters.”
