Is it bad that I really hate Cherrisnake as a ship? Like, it's incredibly one sided, no? The only times she ever shows interest in him are for bullshit sexual reasons like him having two dicks for that him kissing her was "kinda hot". Idk, I just don't see the chemistry, is that weird?
just remembered i got this ask oops lol.
i think the issue here is less that sex is a principal factor in this ship and more that the way the writers understand sex feels very juvenile. it also feels detached from the way the characters' personalities actually are. if the characters had some sort of sexual tension that was written with their personalities and established dynamic in mind, it could be interesting, but pent is ooc and cherri was considerably dumbed down for the full show.
it's symptomatic of the series' general disregard for consistent characterization and motivations. i can't explain or analyze it particularly well because it defies the storytelling standards that are typically necessary to build a believable world/cast. every character knows and wants exactly what they need, which is already bad because it makes a character arc feel redundant--but then on top of that, character arcs straight-up do not happen on-screen. it's weird! it's weird and bad.

Hello! I recently came across your account and you make some very interesting points! I do have to ask, what is your opinion on Lute? She is my favorite
funny you ask, i do like her tbh. her interruption in ep6's song was one of the more memorable moments for me both musically and character-wise (not just with regards to her but for the show as a whole). i like her design too. she almost has a joan of arc thing going on with her hairstyle and the chainmail, which is fitting for her crusader attitude.
i won't be watching s2, but if i were it would probably be for her and rosie.

this is still the best piece of hazbin hotel fanart i ever drew
It’s me again. I never stop bugging you because you are the one place for trans Pen/Sirdust stuff. And image that popped into my head that I thought you would enjoy: Pen being wrapped around Angel like how a snake wraps around their owner. Basically a way Angel can hold Pen because I’m weak to couples carrying each other :’D

this was cute and i wanted to draw it… more arms = easier to carry ur noodle bf

The one thing I'm glad about is that all the former fans are in agreement that we need to take Sir Pentious out of this show and put him and his eggbois in a warm cardboard box full of blankets and impractical laser weapons.
he's inspired by characters from much better cartoons and it shows tbh. i feel like the writers understand what worked about guys like zim or lord hater and were able to apply those principles correctly through pentious (at least through the first few episodes). the same cannot really be said about charlie or vaggie.

im never not visibly cringing when i remember the songs and pacing it's all SOOO awful. the whole show has lost all charm it previously had lmaoo. it's like they got a team of middle aged straight people to watch the pilot and write and animate this show as quick as possible (which is ironic bc they had 3+ years) and try and make it appealing to every audience possible, calling it fanfiction would lowk be an insult bc 80% of hazbin fanfics are written 50x better than whatever this show is. my overall opinion can be summed up w that one meme "it is so bad, i wanna give you a zero,, but that's not possible, (bc of nostalgia lmao) so i give you, a one."
it doesn't feel to me like it was written by middle-aged straight people but that is mainly because several jokes feel like they were stolen from tweets that were originally tumblr posts. "you like girls? me too!" is something i'm 99% sure has been done at least twice with lucifer and charlie in a fancomic somewhere over the past few years. it's Lame.

THOUGHTS ON THE FINALE?? bc it was a lot for suuree
| any thoughts on the last 2 episodes??? i sure do have mine i was like wth throughout the whole thing😭 |
apologies for the radio silence 🫡 i've been busy and also not very enthusiastic about discussing this show, lol. been in the process of packing up my autism and moving it over to transformers.
anyways sure i'll give my thoughts.
as my friend who i was watching the eps with said during ep7, "this version of hazbin hotel where women exist is a lot more interesting"
ep7 was probably the most tolerable character-wise even though it suffered from the same general pacing problems that we saw throughout the rest of the season. charlie felt like an actual character who experienced inner turmoil, and while i didn't like "out for love" very much as a song, the sequence itself was solid. carmilla badly needed more presence in the story for how much they treated her as an important character, though.
i'll also say that i think rosie is the most likable character in the show period. she has a cute design and a charismatic personality, and i wish she had shown up earlier. it was weird that she and alastor acted as if they had just reunited when they saw each other in ep3, though.
the final battle was disappointing all around for both obvious and non-obvious reasons. vaggie badly needed a big heroic moment, but she was fighting lute (who simply does not feel like a real threat) for so much of it that her actions during that part of the episode had very little impact. especially since she was the one to figure out how angels can be killed in ep7 (which was admittedly a plot point that did not need to exist, aside from it facilitating charlie and alastor's deal, but i digress).
i also am pretty miffed that charlie only got one or two good hits in on adam before needing to be saved by lucifer. it was like they couldn't decide whether they wanted to do a team-up or to give lucifer a moment showing off how powerful he is to be able to fight adam one-on-one.
i don't know if there's anything for me to say about what they did to pent that hasn't already been said. i doubt he's going to be relevant in s2, but even if he is, i really don't care. it's baffling incompetent to treat a character death as a comedy beat one moment and then dramatic the next. it winds up not making me feel anything at all. (and on a pettier note, i hate his redesign.)
i've never been huge on adam. his character had potential but was continually wasted in favor of being another shallow commentary on toxic masculinity (which is much too prevalent in spindlehorse shows, i'd argue. the issue isn't with the thematic choice but how vapid the execution is). i'm also hung up on the fact that he's clearly meant to look like alex brightman, but the writers have lucifer make a fat joke about his appearance. fatphobia in these shows has always been an elephant in the room but i feel that this crosses some sort of line.
i don't think i have much else to say? i could go more in-depth of course but i'd have to refresh my memory and i don't have the time or desire to rewatch any part of the season right now. i've gotten pretty much all of my gripes with the show as it stands out of my system.
this blog will likely continue to get some use in the future, but i'll probably be increasingly inactive on here. the silver lining of all this is that hazbin's success may, if nothing else, help pave the way for execs greenlighting more queer animation, but we'll have to wait and see. here's to better shows being made in the future though 🥂
ETA: oh and i've been calling twist villain lilith since 2019 but i have nothing else to say about that.

this is so small but it’s a symptom of the bad writing in Hazbin…you almost forget that Charlie has like pets at all. She has two little goat minions and a weird cat that shapeshifts into a key, and there’s never any comedic/cute scenes with these creatures. The show doesn’t bother making them memorable and that can be applied to like 99% of the characters in the show. So much time is spent on dramatic and grand moments in such short bursts in such a little span of time, that you never really get to know the characters at all or even given a reason to care about them. Characters like Adam and Sir Pent stand out because they’re silly and/or remotely charming and aren’t squeezed dry in the overly angsty bits that never rlly pay off. For a show that wants to be so gray in its messages it manages to fail exceptionally instead and comes off like…backhanded. Stupid. Boring. There is no stakes even though it WANTS stakes and it can’t even do the simple care of like establishing its characters worth being invested in. Even with their background he’ll mascots. Idk if this makes sense lol like so much is happening but at the same time nothing is happening, it just feels dull.
nah this makes perfect sense. keekee is such an odd inclusion and i don't remember if they've even mentioned her by name in the show. iirc she's meant to be an embodiment of the hotel itself as well as a key (according to what i heard about that qna some people bought access to?) but as it stands it seems like she's just. a cat. that's there. mascot characters usually have at least basic personality traits to make them more marketable and she is lacking in those completely. it's strange.
the show is continually confusing setup for payoff for setup so it's impossible to really anticipate anything. angel refusing drugs in ep6 is supposed to be a payoff when we haven't even seen him use drugs on-screen in the show outside of the poison montage, if i'm remembering right. (also this is tangential but why is drug use framed as a moral failing while husk's alcoholism is a mere quirk ??)
there's just nothing here to really latch onto.

God I have to say I haven’t been keeping up with the show but I still follow some of the people in the fandom and what the fuck is even going on anymore???? It feels like shit has gone completely off the rails. Alastor is Charlie’s dad now?? Apparently??? What the fuck is HAPPENING
even if the idea is that alastor only says this to piss lucifer off, it makes very little sense for charlie to be so touched, because we actively saw charlie being skeptical over and fearful of alastor back in the pilot. unfortunately they've made her into something of an idiot, so her reactions make it seem like there IS an ongoing developed relationship between them, when in actuality, they're incredibly distant.

jesuss christ what in the HOLY fuck did they do😭😭 ? it's like they were looking for all the worst jokes, pacing, outcomes and plots to make? someone had to ANIMATE this?😭 i feel bad for them lmao. also fuck they had 3 years and still didn't wanna listen to a thing people were being RIGHTFULLY critical of. makes me super mad. was there NO ONE in the studio who was genuinely trying to make a good show? i feel like they were all like a bunch of delusioned teenagers or something just doing whatever they want and acting like they know the best which like,,... THEY SHOULD??😭. this is all sooo messy. was there genuinely no one to stop and think wait maybe this is cringe or bad?? ANYONE? i don't believe grown people worked on this shit, I'D write a better plot and character arcs and i have no idea how to write.
my genuine thoughts on eps5 and 6,, just made me sad of what could have been.
i remember following you even a few years back lmao I always loved your blog!! ur so cool!! ^^
i think i've said it already but i wouldn't even mind if the show's biggest problem was just being cringe. being cringe is fine. it's good for you sometimes :] the real issue is that this show is just so fundamentally incompetent that it undermined even my most basic expectations for character and story consistency.
once again, i'm certain what happened is that they sacrificed quality for quantity of storylines and character development. it's like a poorly-written summary of the show that the writers had in their heads.
thank you for the kind words !!

I thought of one last thing to add to my frustrations with 6, and the egregious handling of the SA ""joke"" with Pentious. It's already bad in itself, yeah? But it's the fact Angel, Husk and Cherri witness it and do nothing nor comment that makes it even more infuriating. So much for Angel being the pinnacle of redemption if the guy he's supposedly friends with now is about to get hurt in a way he's familiar with and he doesn't even spare him a moments thought. He'll try to protect Charlie from Valentino but god forbid Pentious has anyone show that they care about or like him now. Husk and Cherri are infuriating to me because they are such good pals with Angel I guess, know the hurt Val has caused him and Pentious gets hurt it's crickets. IDK it's maddening because the whole setup and crux of Pentious character within the series so far is that he's so lonely, but what has even been the point of 'redeeming' himself or gaining these "friends" if we never really get any proof they care about him back? Pentious in 5 expresses sorrow for Charlie, saves Nifty and is concerned with her in 6 and uses terms of endearment. When does anyone really talk to Pen about his feelings or ANYTHING outside of the end of episode 3? It's so rushed and he deserves better writing, and much better friends at this point. TBH I have more I could rant about, sorry I'm doing it in your inbox but you are about the only person I've found in this fandom with similar thoughts and feelings to mine.
honestly don't have much to add to this, i agree with pretty much everything you said. was actually discussing the bit about angel and cherri ignoring pentious with friends earlier bc it truly adds insult to injury.

i need your thoughts on the new episode/s bc i genuinely don't wanna watch it myself
i am not going to rewatch the episodes if i can help it so i'm going off memory here but. sure thing anon <3
ep5: i've said it before but i forgot around 80% of what was happening in this episode as i was watching it. lucifer is a nothing character. at best, he is stolas but even less interesting. he does not serve any purpose but to repeat the doubts that have already been expressed around charlie's project. his reconciliation with charlie comes out of nowhere and there's no reason for them to have fallen out in the first place since he is clearly loving and wants to compromise with her. he's boring and so was the episode.
i feel like it was also trying to be an alastor episode but doing a very bad job at it. alastor has had no character development occur on screen at all. there's a bit with husk thag doesn't work because it needed to be established earlier; as-is it feels like a way to try and show that alastor IS on a similar level of abusive to valentino, but that 100% should've happened before ep4. more to the point, he implies to mimzy that he cares about the hotel project, but this (again) does not make sense because we have not seen him grow to care at all. the dad/daughter angle they try to push with him and charlie also has zero setup. they've spoken maybe two sentences to each other in the season proper.
ep6: dumpster fire. the exorcist vaggie reveal is poorly handled and there is no reason charlie shouldn't know about it, let alone have it be this big liar revealed moment. the scene of vaggie being demoted is extremely fast and difficult to follow because there is no time to sit with the drama at all; the reason she defects is so cliche there's no point in commenting on it.
"nobody knows how people get into heaven" when it was angels who created heaven is a confusing plot point and a bad way of saying the criteria to get into heaven is arbitrary. it fails at being morally gray because there is nothing about heaven worth protecting, and the only reason sinners are killed is to prevent an uprising. emily realizing heaven is wrong over the course of one song is terribly rushed, and the reveal of vaggie's former angel status to charlie, as a moment, is silly. the b-plot with cherri at the club is bad all the way through. cherri's character is assassinated and treated like an after-school special villain, the rivalry between her and pentious is dissolved in favor of a crush that was not properly established at all (and which retcons their dynamic from the pilot), the SA joke with pentious is conceptually awful, and angel's character development is badly handled in every way. he's rejecting drugs and standing up to valentino out of absolutely nowhere, and it's presented as if husk is the primary reason for his progress, which is bad for all sorts of reasons. i've talked about why the b-plot is so bad already, i think, so i don't want to ramble on about it too long.
the overall pacing of the season (ep1-3 taking place over 2 weeks, ep4 taking place somewhere between 2 weeks-almost 5 months later, and ep5-6 taking place 5 months later) is also the worst i've ever seen.
idk what happened with the writing but it's bad.

anon from before who ranted 😭sorry abt that again but omg I'm scared and don't want to watch the new episodes I'm glad i hear we got Sir Pentious and Cherry pairing but I genuinely can't figure out how did they fuck EVERYTHING up SO much. pilot was ok bc it had some funny giggly moments and memorable songs and the show is a TOTAL opposite. songs are shit and there literally aren't any jokes they just downgraded the characters to their main personality trait and I hate it so much. Take me to some parallel universe where Viv is a normal person who can write and not be offensive and ignorant please, bc my 16yo self is screaming and not in a good way even she would cringe HARD at this mess.
not to be mean or anything but i'm still questioning why they got the guy who did the ost for Baby Shark's Big Adventure or whatever to be the co-writer for the music. it had to be a budget thing right.
there are a couple moments in the series proper that i've found funny but they are few and far between, and most attempts at humor fall totally flat. as for the characters' personalities, i feel like this is another consequence of trying to cram as much into as short an amount of time as humanly possible. there is no effort to adapt the ideas that the writers had to the constraints that they were given. everything is just at 100 all the time (and yet they still need to have what feels like a filler episode with a character who is as much of a nothingburger as lucifer).
i try not to make my criticisms personal unless they relate directly to how the production is run as opposed to the quality of the product itself but. man i do wish this was written by people who knew how to adapt and compromise without losing their vision. because the vision DOES get lost when you go about making a show this way. it's like a poorly-done abridged version of the show we were promised several years ago.
