I was asked how I made the rainbow light effect in my last piece, so I put together a quick step by step.

Here’s how I do a skin texture. It’s very easy. You don’t need a special brush download. I use CS6 but it’ll work in any Photoshop.
First, get a basic round brush. Open up the brush settings window.
Under Brush Tip Shape, increase the spacing:

Turn Transfer on:
Tumblr media
Turn Scattering on and adjust if you want:

Now, when you paint on top of skin, use a soft light or overlay layer:

Add a little blur:

Yay now you have pores.
You can use it in reverse with a darker color. It’s an easy way to add naturalistic texture and highlights to skin. You can even layer the effect and do nice subsurface scattering on things like metal or plastic.

please do not make bleached panther
black panther was released in theaters less than half a week ago (2/19) and i’ve already seen the main characters with white features and people making the characters too light and you absolute buffoons have let these posts blow up so im here’s a post on how to avoid bleaching black characters
skin color reference lip reference lip/nose/hair reference
if you want to take a skin color reference do not play by eye use this bitch right here
Tumblr media
i wish this was obvious but if the source is an edited picture say like this
Tumblr media
don’t use that source. it’s best to use a source where there is more natural light or you can look up the actor/actress and get a solid picture of them. also take note of what kind of facial features these characters have (nose, lips, etc) by looking at stills or posters of them. not all of these characters have slim noses or smaller lips.
i know this is going to be a new experience for people drawing black characters so if you make a mistake, learn from it especially if it’s from a black person. get the okay from black people before posting. you’ll get better with time and practice. this isn’t a “let people draw them the way they want” thing because this movie respects african and black cultures like how they put so much effort into the costumes and i really would not hurt to respect black people
feel free to post more sources

A rough cityscape using the 3D workspace in Photoshop CC for my scout/sketch for paintover. I used depth map for the foreground buildings and 3D extrusions for the ones in the bg - all within my photoshop workflow. Amazing how this can be done in under two hours. Its always about speeding up the process. Happy Wednesday!

literally most things that people write off as just ‘textures’ to use in graphics are stolen & unsourced material created by artists or photographers NOT meant to be used as elements in projects without royalty payments. you can say ‘it’s just random tumblr posts they don’t care’ but you wouldn’t want someone to take your work and edit into their work so they can be praised for their beautiful style and creativity even if they just post it on social media w/o profit, would you?? so maybe if you browse pinterest or google images for pictures without finding the original source, you’re using images that you’re not allowed to use without realizing it.
you see it on here a lot especially in (i won’t link anything but i’m sure you know what i mean) those album track ‘aesthetics’ posts, au ‘aesthetic’ posts (you see these less in kpop, but where people use non-royalty free images to kinda craft a visual au), and even just rather typical graphics that have a lot of ‘texture’ elements. and texture packs too!! that’s often where the problem starts; people just collect images (often literal art), compile them in a folder w/o sources, then insist no one can repost those images w/o crediting the person who compiled them. what???
SO may i suggest some of my fave places you can get FREE, ROYALTY-FREE elements that are totally legal to use
creativemarket has 6 free high-quality resources (textures, brushes, fonts, etc), different every week! wow awesome i check it every week
search ‘freebie’ on behance. awesome stuff!!! lots of v nice templates textures and fonts
mockup zone freebies
unsplash: tons of very nice free photographs, not shitty stock photos
pexels: same idea. + they have an adobe plugin so you can get photos without closing your editor damn nice
pixelsquid is a super cool free program (again w a ps plugin that i love) with lottts of super cool hq 3d elements!
as to not make this too long: spoongraphics, lostandtaken (textures galore), pixeden, freebiesbug.

If you're an artist looking to diversify your faces:
click this link
draw whomever you get
don’t worry about making it super-accurate, just focus on the characteristic parts of the face and have fun
the outcome might not look like the ref, but it will be different and more varied than faces you draw out of your head, an dprobably pretty rad on its own right!
feel free to reblog with your drawing, if you want!

can u tell I gave up halfway thru
also alistair is totally a guy who dresses in pastels all the time but my warden hates cold weather and shows it in her dress style (the bright jumper is knitted from wynne so she feels obliged to wear it)
ok so here are my modern au headcanons (u can’t stop me):
ali has a seriously high body temp and the warden is always stealing it, doesn’t matter if they’re in a relationship or not
speaking of the warden likes to tease ali about this and puts her cold fingers on his neck 24/7
whenever people see alistair dressed for the weather they’re very surprised but he does it just to make the warden feel like she’s not over dressing for the chill
he also only carries a jacket for her even though she has like 3 layers on
zevran and the warden swap clothes all the time bc they can relate to each other’s coldness
the original post was deleted by the time I got around to drawing this ://

LIFE DRAWING REFERENCE LINKS
While drawing from life is considered the ideal way to improve your skills, what if you don’t have the opportunity? Or, maybe you want to get a little more practice in between such sessions? The internet is a fine thing, and it’s not hard to find good drawing references nowadays. Here are a few popular figure drawing reference links that every artist should check out!
Posemanics.com : Possibly the most popular pose website there is, they offer a multitude of ‘skinless’ poses so you can get a good handle on the body’s musculature. Features include timed poses (good for gesture practice), negative space drawing, and even an app for your phone!
Artists.pixelovely.com : another popular site with timed poses, they offer a variety of photographical references ranging from full figures, faces, hands & feet, and even animals. They also have a blog with useful art tips.
Quickposes.com : Another slideshow-esque site similar to pixelovely, including a ‘Challenges’ feature where you are able to upload your own images.
Reference! Reference! : specifically for animation, here you can find short clips of common movements and actions.
Human Anatomy for Artist : HD resolution human photos, including stereoscopic 3D references. While there is a paid membership option, quite a few quality images viewable for free. It has a noteworthy search tool, where you can pick even the hair color of the model you’re looking for!
Anatomy4Sculptors.com : Not just for sculptors! This website has loads of anatomical references in the form of muscles & bones, block-outs and plain photos. There’s also a lot of art tips throughout the website that are extremely insightful!
3D Pose tool for Mobile : Available to both Mac and Android users, this nifty little app allows you to generate and pose a 3D model however you like. Also available: Horse Pose Tool, and Manga Pose Tool. Note: It was rated as one of the “Top 10 Must-Have Art Apps” in issue #92 of ImagineFX!
Atarichan Drawer : an interesting website where a stick figure with key joints is generated for you.
Tumblr : tumblr has a plethora of resources, but here are a few to start you off:
- Portraitsfordrawing - Figuresfordrawing - Everyday-art-practice
Pinterest : same story as tumblr, here are a few goodies!
- Theluuvre’s Figure Drawing Reference board - Angua80’s Expressions & Poses boards
DeviantART : many stock photo professionals have set up shop here. Here are a few popular names:
- SenshiStock - Mjranum Stock - DAposes (group) - Pose-emporium (group)
Did we miss something you think fellow artists would appreciate? Please share!
