A cashier asked me if I was expecting today.

Today while buying my mother a birthday card, a woman behind the counter asked me if I was expecting. I am not. I have never received this question before. I said no politely and tried to get out of there quickly but I clearly felt uncomfortable. 

I went into the store next door to try to compose myself but I could not keep from crying while I called my husband. I had one more thing to pick up so I finished up and went to my car. As I sat there I got angry. 

So I went back in to confront the woman. I told her I was not okay with what she said to me. I told her that on most days I struggle with my physical appearance. But today I had felt positive about myself before I left the house. I told her she had ruined my day. 

She apologized but in a way that felt more caught than truly apologetic. I did not let it slide. I told her I did not accept. When it became clear I wasn't backing down her coworker came over to "help." She said "Well why did she think that? Is your shirt loose?" I told them they had no right to make comments about my body because of what I was wearing. Then the coworker tried to say "Well normally she doesn't even work today! She works in the medical field!" To which I replied that she should definitely know not to ask random women if they are pregnant. (I'm unsure how her schedule had anything to do with making her comment acceptable.) The coworker then just walked away and tried to divert the other customers in the store. 

I am proud of myself for not yelling even though I was very upset. I remained as calm as possible. I don't remember everything that was said. But after a few rounds of her apologizing and me refusing to accept I gave up and just walked away. 

I don't know what I expected or wanted from the interaction. I guess standing up for myself should be enough. I'm proud of myself for even getting the courage to do it.

I often feel bad about my appearance. I am 33 and have always been petite. But as I get older I have gained weight. Most of it is in my stomach and thigh area. Despite my insecurities I think I still appear smaller than I feel. This woman just found the exact chink in my armor. 

My question is: women who have been in this situation, should I have done anything differently? I left still feeling deflated.
