when people die early in a story but their death sets the tone for the whole story and to an extent sets everything in motion even if the story isn’t about their death… that’s good shit right there!

Jen is alive to lecture Jason because I said so. No further explanation.
(For anyone forgetting, Jason was the one who manipulated Nina and worked with the Population Police to turn kids in.)

@trans-bowser thank you, I’m glad you like it, but wow I didn’t realize it was half a decade since I published it 💀
Bravery’s Nightmares
SO I WROTE SOMETHING.
It’s a one shot (which I’m going to try to turn into a two-shot), so it’s pretty short, but I’ve posted it in some other places if you’d prefer to read it there instead of here. ANyway, this chapter’s set in a JDD (Jen Doesn’t Die) AU, so that’s why she’s alive!
You can also read it on Fanfiction.net, A03, or Wattpad.
His head had hardly touched his pillow, yet Luke slept restfully, a smile gracing his face as memories flashed through his mind—Jen wearing white, her eyes shimmering with happiness, the wind whispering through leaves, the flash of pictures.
The wedding day’s happiness had lingered, recently, replacing nightmares of the population police with blurry replays of holding Jen’s hands, her silver ring matching his. The hazy joy had kept the bad memories at bay, sealing them away for a while.
Until tonight.

Hot take since it's almost 4 in the morning and my brain worms are in full force.
Looking back on Jennifer Rose Talbot as a character and relating to so much of her rejection of femininity that was placed onto her throughout her life (ex: rejection of her name, hatred of bras) has got me thinking. Reflecting back on that 15 years later, as somebody who's identified as trans for six years at this point; as somebody who took much solace from Jen as a character, her high energy and confidence, and rejection of femininity as a closeted/unaware trans preteen going through a dysphoria inducing puberty at the time... Jen is so trans coded.
I don't think the language would have been as avalable to her for a variety of reasons. Y'know with the world she lives in quite literally being a fascist state that heavily suppresses information about shadow children and honestly most likely also suppressing information about minority groups that also exist within our own world. I think she'd be able to find some information online though or at least find people who have that experience and have it click for her. If Jen lived she would have definetly either come out as a trans man or genderqueer person who presents masculine during either her 20's or 30's. Most likely the latter, I don't think Jen would fuck with binaries.
If I could only pick one character from all my favorites who have meant so much to me throughout my life to definitively point to and say "they're trans", it would be Jennifer Rose Talbot.

On a whim, I decided to reread Among the Hidden to see if it stood up to my childhood memories, and I have just this to say: Margaret Peterson Haddix is hardcore.

Despite the fact that I read "Among the Hidden" for the first time over thirteen years ago AND a minimim total of five time, along with the rest of the series, I just realized TODAY that its Luke Garner not Luke Gardner

I’ve been rereading the series and because I’m an artist I have a tendency to jot down what characters look like, and so here’s what I’ve gathered from what’s mentioned in the books. I probably missed a few parts, but whenever someone vaguely important was described I wrote down the description, so they’re as accurate as I could get. They’re all from books 1—5 so far, I’ll add more if I find more!
Character Descriptions:
Luke: brothers have dark hair and chiseled faces, but Luke is fairer, smaller-boned, softer looking. Sandy hair, pale eyes, worried look.
Jen: Shorter than Nina, more muscular than Nina (Luke’s descriptions lol), with dark/brown hair almost as short as Luke’s. First shown outfit: gray sweatshirt, jeans.
Mr. Talbot: tall, muscular, dark hair waved back from high forehead.
Mrs. Talbot: “beautiful,” bright and vibrant red hair, smooth and unlined face, curvy body.
Nina: 13 years old. Tall, scrawny, with two pale thin braids hanging on either side of her face. (<< according to Luke) Medium height, medium weight, medium brown hair. (<< according to herself)
Trey: “his dark hair hung down into his eyes” (wow, much description, Haddix)
Trey’s mom: “frown lines etched around her mouth, worry lines curved into her brown, disappointment mirrored in her eyes.” Shapeless dresses and mismatched holey sweaters, one on top of the other in the constant battle to stay warm. Gray, lifeless hair.
Jason: tall, thin, maybe 15, overcast dark eyes, oddly shaped face (like a jackal).
Matthias: age 10, brown hair flopped down over his eyes
Percy: age 9, everything about him is sharp—his nose, the set of his mouth, the bony elbows jutting from out of his oversized, rolled up shirt sleeves. His dark hair is longish and tangled.
Alia: age 6, cute, with hair in a ponytail at the nape of her neck.
Smits Grant: cold, gray eyes, a “patrician nose,” light hair, a sneer. 11 or 12 years old, “but he might as well have been a mini-adult.”
Lee Grant: older, darker haired version of smits. Braces, gray eyes (“close enough” to Luke’s eyes, but different, according to the Grants), brown hair that’s darker than Luke’s.
Jonas Sabine: (one of the Liber members) kindly eyes, “short gray hair spiked out from under his Population Police hat”
Jonathan Sabine: (Jonas’ son) eyes and features similar to his dad’s, freckles, a jaunty smile.
