Someone just left a comment saying they'll be giving up on my Astarion/Tav fic since it's been three months since I updated and idk welcome to my sporadic fandom life, I guess?

The idea of english as a mother tongue is so strange to me, in my head english is how ppl communicate when there's no way in common to communicate, so english as a mother tongue sounds a bit like idk email as a mother tongue ykwim? Like english to me feels like the stuff that's used to fill the empty spaces between languages

Fic Update: Blaze Me a Sun
Tumblr media
Chapter 25: The devil you know (AO3) “Cazador is a piece of shit.” Her voice carries, but she still feels breathless with anger. With the sharp, unfamiliar contours of a fear that doesn’t have a proper shape yet, that merely lurks around the shape of this in her mind. “We’re going to stop him.”

"You can't mean people find this old metal head hot? He looks like the wood elf edition of any 45+ ex-rocker who drinks a bit too much and likes his women 'young at heart'." My husband doesn't get the Halsin hype and I guess we're divorcing now.

this is me coming back from a weekend long binge of your silverV fics and i have left kudos and everything but once again id like to thank you for writing the Crimson series! 'm a lousy commenter but it made me cry!!! it's bordering on misery porn and yet it managed to maintain that weird... coziness? comfort isnt the right word, but i felt held by the familiarity of Night City. it really was the best of times and the worst of times.
im a long time fan of Blaze as well and it was a moment of true happiness when I found your name in another fandom's tag. (truthfully im debating whether i should watch lucifer... ive done far worse things for the writers i loved much less).
anyway i was delighted by all the author notes and references and im really sorry to inform you but we're best friends now. have a good day!!!

Ha! Misery porn is exactly the genre I know I keep touching the edges of, but I really want to steer away from it. So that's terribly on point. Pretty much everything I write tends to be steeped in the conviction that while the world is shit, those in power suck and nothing's fair, we human beings at least have each other. So hopefully that's part of why you feel it's still cozy. Also, I'm thrilled when anyone wants to read my author notes and references, so yay thank you!

Hi! I just wanted to tell you that I am in absolute, complete admiration of your writing. I discovered you with Blaze Me A Sun and fell in love with your writing style. The way you express emotions and your prose are something unique. It's really touching, it's almost like reading poetry and I love it so much that I have a hard time expressing my thoughts. How did you come to develop your prose? Did you take inspiration from particular authors or is it just something that came about naturally?
I'm honestly surprised you don't get much, much more recognition, you're amazing and your stories should be read and enjoyed by so many more people. I can't believe I get to read fics of this quality for free!
Thank you for the art you create and put out there for everyone to enjoy
Thank you so, so much for the kind words. <3 As for my prose, I think it's developed partly from reading a massive amount of different genres and styles over the years. I've also spent years at Uni studying literature which isn't necessarily a creative thing (far from it, sometimes) but it can help clean up your own writing, I've found. I also have to say that sometimes reading a good analysis or take on a piece of writing can help pinpoint the heart of it all in a really sharp way and there are days when that degree really helps when I'm parsing through texts I enjoy. What does it really say? What's the thing? Why does it hurt? To me, that's incredibly helpful when I'm writing. I always begin and end with the characters and if I know the bones of them, I know what they feel. Anytime someone compliments me on my prose I also always suspect that it's partly due to English not being my primary language. You have to be a little more creative using languages that aren't your own, I find. For inspiration, I almost always go to either poetry or plays. Plays are underrated literature, their sparseness in descriptions and exact way of phrasing things are amazing sources of inspiration, I think.

Hiiiii, very long time fan of yours and I first just wanted to say how much your writing means to me and how it’s gotten me through some very difficult times. There’s such a profoundness in your writing that I can’t even begin to describe and I just wanted to send kudos and love for all of the hard work you put into your stories. But ANYWAY I have a question; I was rewatching the LOTR trilogy and I wanted to know if you were a fan as well? If so, do you have a favorite character? I have always been drawn to deeply tragic and flawed characters (another reason I’m so drawn to your writing and stories)
First thank you x 1000 for the kind words. <3 LOTR is one of the fandoms I was on the fringes to join way back in senior high, maybe. I read the books and then later I saw the movies and I've always preferred the movies (so no fandom for me, I guess, I'd have been killed by True Fans) and watched them A LOT. Anyway, my fave characters were Gríma and Boromir - followed by his entire family, honestly, because the overlooked brother and the super dramatic father? Gimme.

Except the game isn't about "winning" because there's no ending where that can happen, it's about friendship and resistance and caring about people in a world that is completely commodified. It's about souls rather than bodies. The human body is just an item for sale in Night City, the corpos want to make the soul - the "data" of us - one as well, but then there's this little engram thing, doing unpredictable stuff to this one merc's brain. We all die at the end of the story. What's important is what the story is about.
I know that like, no matter what by the time the end of the game rolls around v has lost enough ground to johnny where their body isn't "theirs" anymore bc speed of plot, but it's fucked up to consider that being friends with Johnny, doing stuff for him and being kind to him is exactly what kills V.
Alt directly references the consumption of psuedoendotrizine being one of the direct causes of Vs body rejecting them, at the very end of the game it gets thrown back in their face that maybe if they hadn't been a friend to Johnny, if they'd fought against each other for real then maybe they would've gotten their body back for real. If V didnt help johnny get closure, help him tie up all the loose ends he had when he died, then just maybe.
It's literally their love for each other that dooms them dude

What else do you want, wretched boy? Cazador asks somewhere in the dusk of his imagination.
Nothing, he thinks, swallowing.
Everything.  Everything.  ---
New chapter is up at AO3. Astarion has a lot of thoughts to mask his feels because if you feel things, universes may implode.

“While many people think fanfiction is about inserting sex into texts (like Tolkien’s) where it doesn’t belong, Brancher sees it differently: “I was desperate to read about sex that included great friendship; I was repurposing Tolkien’s text in order to do that. It wasn’t that friendship needed to be sexualized, it was that erotica needed to be … friendship-ized.” Many fanfiction writers write about sex in conjunction with beloved texts and characters not because they think those texts are incomplete, but because they’re looking for stories where sex is profound and meaningful. This is part of what makes fan fiction different from pornography: unlike pornography, fanfic features characters we already care deeply about, and who tend to already have long-standing and complex relationships with each other. It’s a genre of sexual subjectification: the very opposite of objectification. It’s benefits with friendship.”
— Francesca Coppa, “Introduction to The Dwarf’s Tale,” The Fanfiction Reader (via francescacoppa)
Someone put it into words. I gotta sit down
