Far worse, in my opinion, than the famous “he wouldn’t fucking say that” is “he WOULD fucking say that, as part of his facade, but you seem to think he would mean it genuinely”

#dipping a toe very carefully into fandom discourse here #but I do sometimes find it jarring how much of WWX's words in particular are taken at face value #when he very clearly uses words and reputation very intentionally to further his aims rather than reflect his true thoughts #and he's also shown to struggle to even be honest to himself in his internal thoughts #this is the character who when needing to conceal a vital weakness that should have been glaringly obvious under continued scrutiny #decides the best course of action is to project an arrogant and dangerous persona enough to stop anyone getting close enough to notice #And he manages that! #In the middle of a war where everyone was using the skills he couldn't participate in anymore!! #Alongside the only remnants left of his family and his schoolfriends!! #And *no-one* sees through this effectively enough to realise what's going on #It's frustrating when characterisation is built up from elements that formed part of his varied fronts as different points in his life(ves) #he's a much more layered (and interesting) character than any of those fronts in isolation give him credit for #wei wuxian #mdzs thoughts

i’m a little obsessed with the blindfold scene tbh and what it must have been like from Lan Wangji’s perspective. because there is no reason for Wei Wuxian to be blindfolded, nobody actually expected him to do that. he’s already captured more prey than is sportsmanlike and is just chilling in a tree, and the only reason he wore it in the first place was to be an asshole and show off and prove that he’s better than Jin Zixuan. so when he senses a person nearby, it would make sense to lift up the blindfold to see who it is. even if he can tell they don’t have killing intent, that’s not the only way a person can cause harm! and there are plenty of people there who wish him harm. but no, he’s a stubborn and arrogant little shit who refuses to take off the blindfold even as the person approaches him.

so we have LWJ probably accidentally coming across WWX, and then intentionally walking in his line of sight hoping to get teased a little, since he’s been, like, pining over him for a few years now, so he can allow himself a little torture, as a treat. but this little jackass still refuses to take off the blindfold, and instead just asks who it is, and LWJ is determined to win this battle of wits and keeps walking closer without saying anything, but WWX doubles down, and then he’s standing right in front of him, examining his face from way too close, and he can see the curves of his lips and probably smell his scent and his heart starts to pound, and when WWX finally reaches for the blindfold, he’s too close and too excited, so he impulsively grabs his wrist and pins him back and then is just like, fuck - in for a penny, in for a pound - and just fucking kisses him on the mouth without thinking of the consequences. but then when WWX kisses him back?? and it’s like, oh god, he’s such a slut that he’ll make out with anyone without even seeing their face, what am i doing!!

and then ofc, the self loathing after he runs away but i care less about that part, personally.

Folks... I have been making things like you wouldn't believe, and haven't been able to talk about ANY of it, for fear of spoiling these goods before they were ready. What we have here are mdzs and tgcf (and, as always, please support mxtx and the official translations! I will be doing so on top of making book art pieces!)

But, more relevantly, what we have here are the results of my efforts to learn hidden fore edge painting :3c

The Grandmaster Of Demonic Cultivation, jn three volumes! The outsides are pretty, but the inside edges are even prettier :D Art referenced from screencaps of The Untamed, done in ink and watercolor, then the edges faux-gilded with metallic acrylic ink

I've been neglecting art for a while now, and have never worked on a surface like this until a month ago, so I was/am extremely proud of my lines for these books!

Then, the watercolors. For anyone who's curious, I've been taking photographs and making notes to self, and intend to assemble those into instructions, for anyone who's interested :D

And getting images of this is very hard, so bear with me. It's much clearer irl than when I'm trying to light and film a two-handed job solo, haha

So then... I'm really, really, really ludicrously bad at self-control. I took like a day to recover. And then I was like well I HAVE to do tgcf! The symmetry gods demand it! Mdzs was rounded and backed, but the guillotine gets finicky with shoulders, so tgcf is an experiment in flat-backed binding, with fore edge art referenced from the donghua close.

Please note the single strand of red in each headband, and please note the way fabric orientation changes for the flashback books, and how the flashback books have dark endpapers, and how the two halves of book three have the same endpaper print in different colors. Both mdzs and tgcf have edge colors that were custom mixed to match the flavor of gold I wanted to use. Overthinking book design choices is so REWARDING!

No wip images here, I was finding my footing and moving faster, so here's the pre-hidden art, and a (silent) video of the final product :D

And so that! Is where I vanished to! I'm so, so excited to be able to finally share. I've reached a point where I'm confident in my ability to consistently make high-quality books, and I was worried I would get bored, but instead everything got so fascinating!
