“  ‘the will of the materials’…  are there others with the same skill?  I cannot imagine that many would be so accommodating,  especially with the recent drive for  ‘me’  driven goals.   ”     —–  he still offers a smile,  though the corners stretch wider and his head bows slightly in appreciation;  the nosy servants of chaldea would certainly not hesitate to push further.     “  no, no, do not apologize.  it is not such a terrible thing that you must feel the need to.  it is a pleasure to meet you,  lady sophie,  my name is bedivere.   ”
Tumblr media
❝ Hehe -- i’ve never been called ‘lady sophie’ before, i don’t think. but if that’s what you prefer, i guess i don’t mind. ❞
sophie then offers some contemplation to his query, recalling that which her teacher had told her once, so many years ago now.     ❝ i know a couple others who can, yeah !  it’s not exactly a learned skill, but i guess you can say it awakens or develops in certain alchemists. ❞    her own curiosity begins to rear its head --     ❝ bedivere, huh ?  are there any alchemists where you’re from ?  ❞

curiosity runs its course, awaiting Sophie’s demonstration with nothing to expect save for whatever childlike wonder remained still within him—an innocence he’s forgotten after years of wandering in the dense wood. yet for as prepared as one can be for discovering such mysteries, he still manages to be astonished—eyes now wide as the strange mechanism erects the modestly-sized tent afore him.
❝what—❞
perhaps his expectations were scaled too high, admittedly imagining a manse of regal design, but the tent in of itself is as much a miracle even when he, sole wielder of annihilation, knows of divine truth and that which renders a lesser man insane. this spectacle, however, is something else entirely in all of its saccharine whimsy. turned to the creator, he wonder if she’s not more than human, mayhaps blessed in some manner by a divine patron. ❝it seems rather compact, I’m not sure if I will…❞ thoughts drop off to the nether as he steps closer, peeking his head inside and stunned to silence.
reason bears little explanation for the surrealism of it all and he wanders like a child in a candy store, too distracted by the well-kept array of materials—of a space larger on the inside than out, ❝I… certainly doubt that my quivers are capable of accomplishing something of this scale, but I understand what you mean…
you place a commendable amount of effort to your craft. I am impressed.❞
Tumblr media
❝ Ha ha, i’m glad. you’re carrying a quiver like that around, so that my little abode here is impressive by comparison must mean something. ❞     were she younger she may find herself flustered by such praise, but time has tempered the amateur, but excitable, alchemist she had been into an excitable alchemist who could take a compliment or few.
sophie shuffles momentarily where she stands, briefly wondering if to speak more on the subject was to speak too much of herself. unfurling the atelier tent oft brought about an innocent awe and sense of wonder in others that she enjoyed invoking, but this is not to say that she looks to show off in doing so.
❝ i created this tent as a means of carrying my cauldron around. there was something that i wanted to do that i couldn’t while stuck at home, but i still needed alchemy to do it.  but anyway ... ❞
a downcast glance to his quiver , which remains still unclipped from his person. her curiosity remains steadfast , and this brief digression hasn’t wholly distracted her. ❝ this is a more contained space , so i was wondering if i could take an even closer look at that ?  it’ll be less of a mess if i happen to spill arrows everywhere or something while in here. ❞

@bleudied asked:
Um, excuse me, could I possibly commission you to craft a lance for me? Preferrably one that does not break easily, if at all.
❝ A lance , huh ... ?  i could try !   maybe silvalia would be a good metal ... or harmonium ?  right , harmonium would be better. ❞     she appears to be merely thinking aloud to herself now ,       ❝ i’m not sure how to make weapons , but i know a really great blacksmith , logy , who could make you something if i synthesize the right things. the secret to something like this is using the highest grade materials !  although ... ❞
Tumblr media
❝ usually , highest grade also means rare       like the things you find in old ruins or protected by dragons and stuff. do you have any of those around here ?  ❞

sophie is fun because by the time she’s an adult she’s like some alchemical genius who’s made gadgets that stop and/or rewind time and can create compasses that can guide a disembodied soul to a new body but she’s also this chaotic bouncy person who has her own blend of tea that she named as a pun after herself -- “sotea”

❝an interesting proposition. as the wielder, I’m inclined towards saying that the former is more likely.❞
he plays the student role well, ever the keen ear to acquiring knowledge ( a gluttonous scholar, obsessed with inching closer to the universal truths ) regardless of origin or subject. a thoughtful gesture, fingers curled over the lips. the simplest explanation is also the most broad with its inclusion, and now he wonders if there is more to it than that; his era possessed artifacts impossible to recreate in the modern age, forged from fires not yet ignited, yet not for a second he questioned their origin—to the kshatriya, so long as the ends justified the means, he can yield ignorance. perchance if he carried a more skeptical soul, he might have inquired about it with his birth father, but such a time has long-since passed and the gods no longer to levy their burdens.
the mourning lasts for seconds and what matters most is the now is the peculiar object held in the girl’s hand, brow raised at the peculiar design, ❝I see. and you say this is an atelier? would it be possible for you to provide me with a demonstration as to how it functions?❞
Tumblr media
❝ Of course !  heheh, i was sort of hoping you’d ask. it’s always fun to show this to people. ❞   she ambles a short ways off, presumably to make space. and, like it were a button, she presses her palm down on the object in the opposite hand. it buckles beneath the pressure before she sets it on the ground and takes few strides in retreat.
it’s almost comical, the way it comes into itself not unlike it were some inflatable structure. but even at this size it’s modest at best, like a strange tent fortunate enough to have a door.
❝ tadah ~ ❞  she gestures to it like its peculiarity were its appeal,  ❝ this is the atelier tent !   i made it when i first left my hometown to travel.  ❞   sophie opens the door then, and lets herself in before gesturing an invitation for arjuna to follow suit           ❝ it’s more impressive inside. ❞
and so it is; the interior not so much that of a tent but rather a house three rooms wide. tiled floors with robust walls, shelves of raw materials and a cauldron stand out amongst the furnishings.       ❝ hehe. what do you think ?  i was thinking your quiver is similar in principle to this. ❞

“  i cannot imagine being able to understand such a thing;  perhaps merlin or lady da vinci would be more engaging company on the topic,  but even in my lack of knowledge,  it sounds fantastic.  alchemist…  i have heard of someone with the same title,  but i cannot remember their name,  yet another thing that i am unfamiliar with.   ”     —–  a sheepish smile,  hand pressed sharply to metal.     “  i am… sure that is not the case.  it was not mine to begin with.   ”
Tumblr media
❝ Well I admit my talent is in listening to materials, not the finished product. but if something is created against the will of the materials ... you’ll usually know. ❞  sophie folds her hands behind her back with a nod, however; a polite gesture of concession.    ❝ but i did presume, so i’m sorry for that ; i don’t know anything about your arm, or you for that matter. i’m sophie     it’s nice to meet you ! ❞

ever since i learned sophie’s name comes from the greek word for “wisdom” and how phronesis ( “practical wisdom” , a closely related term ) is an overarching theme in her story i haven’t stopped thinking about it ............

❝you may.❞ he unclips one of his quivers, regarding it with deserved admiration of its craftsmanship ( forged in starspace, blessings offered in the wake of forest fires ) before lowering it for her to observe, ❝some might think the mechanism daunting while in combat, but I’ve found the repetition helpful in harnessing my focus. beautiful, is it not?❞
Tumblr media
❝ Oh, it’s lighter than i thought it’d be. ❞   she comments with a testing grasp, though she makes no move to seize it herself. this isn’t to suggest that the quiver was in the realm of feathers, only that she’d expected a greater weight from one of infinite load-out.    ❝ a quiver that takes up finite space but produces infinite arrows , huh ... ?  i wonder if it creates arrows infinitely as you need them, or if there’s a bottomless stockpile. hm ! ❞
struck by epiphany, she removes and rummages through her backpack. given some moments of searching she in time produces a small figurine, not unlike a rounded triangle.
❝ my first guess would be that the inside is an area of bent space. in which case, it’s a little like this !  i-i mean, this isn’t a weapon of any sort though. it’s an atelier ... haha. ❞

sophie doesn’t even have a real about page yet but i’ll get on that once i wrap up iri’s remaining drafts, and that’s something i should probably do before laying down any further groundwork BUT i’ve been thinking about how sophie would fit into fate and luckily atelier mysterious makes this pretty feasible ?
they don’t come into play during her game, but the third game in the mysterious arc ( in which sophie still prominently features ) centers around mysterious paintings, which are essentially magically-imbued paintings that become that way by means of being created with paints synthesized via alchemy. at this point they function as portals to other worlds.
that is to say ... if there was one such painting of chaldea, sophie could get there through such means. i have some ideas for how she’d get one too, pending some discussion.
i’ve yet to determine if her abilities would constitute calling her a mage with aptitude as a master because i don’t want to stretch her over too many bases as she’s already one of the best in her own canon, but a lot of her skillset + “law of profusion” are definitely magic so... we’ll see.

“  oh, that’s very nice of you to do that for them.  what is it like?  do they have their own voices?  is it in a common language,  or can you just…  feel  it?   ”
//  @sautea      ❤ ‘d     for a starter !!

❝ Oh, that’s actually a good question. they have their own voices, but different alchemists might hear the same wish differently too. i wouldn’t say i hear them with my sense of hearing, either ?  thinking about it that way, i’d say it’s closer to feeling.  like your arm there –  i bet it wanted to become what it is. that’s usually how it works, anyway. ❞

❝oh, these?❞ he turns, brandishing the quivers fastened to his sides, their metals glinting an otherworldly sheen, ❝they are gifts bestowed unto me by the fire god. I know not the mechanisms behind them, but they provide me with an infinite supply of arrows—I saw little reason to question it.❞

❝ A gift from a god, huh ?  that’s actually pretty neat ... i wonder if that counts as an alchemic creation? ❞  sophie isn’t so bold as to think herself an act of apotheosis ; not so bold as to think divine weaponry as within her reach. but inquisitive is she, and surely there could be something to learn.    ❝ – is it okay if i take a closer look ? ❞

i think a lot about how exceptional sophie is ... and i know that’s typical of atelier protagonists in general so even though she isn’t that special in the grand scheme of atelier games, she’s considered so in the narrative context of the mysterious series. but basically she’s ,, the rorona of mysterious, i guess ?
we meet sophie when she’s only 16 years old, dealing with the loss of her grandmother and how she’s been inspired by her grandmother to also be someone that could help people with alchemy. that’s a very humble goal but sophie still became someone great in pursuing it.
sophie’s introduction shows that she can barely synthesize medicine and at first people are like “wooow you made this ??” and it kind of goes to show that at that point she wasn’t quite the alchemist her grandmother was. sophie was... very babie.
but as the game progresses sophie goes on to create a philosopher’s stone, and in time she transfers an entire soul that’d been sealed in a book into a doll’s body. like... an actual compass-type thing that guides a soul to a new place and that’s such a huge feat from common medicine.
then in atelier firis she has an entire tardis-tent she made with alchemy and in lydie&suelle she talks about stopping time and winding back time, and she even goes as far as giving plachta a human body again despite plachta’s original body being 500 years gone. like... even that process was something she already conceptualized in theory and had a recipe for, it was just a matter of attaining the needed materials which she couldn’t do without the mysterious paintings. and she smacks god with her staff and it’s like I Am A Proud Mom to see my babie grow up into someone who not only helps but can save other people and wow sophie’s my fukign daughter
