How to: Casting a circle

So you wanna know how to cast a circle so you can do all sorts of cool shit. Well 1st you should know why it is important to cast a circle to begin with. 

The circle will protect you from any unwanted negative energy and/or spirits. Also when you cast the circle all of the negative energy will be cleaned from the circle. The goal is to be left with a safe, positive working environment for any magickal work or any rituals you want to perform. 

Some people say that you should only cast a circle ONLY when you are doing spellwork/ritual work and i’m gonna be honest for a minute. I think it is up to you to decide, if you wanna cast a circle just so you can chill out and have a safe space to collect your thoughts, or cleanse your crystals, or whatever, I say do it. Do what makes you feel safe and happy. The way I will show you to cast a circle is not the ONLY way, it is just my way that I want to share with you all so that you may have a guide/inspiration for when you cast your own. 

Step #1:

Collect all the items you want to have with you in the circle BEFORE you cast it. It’s better to not have to leave the circle once it is cast but if you have to wave your wand/finger/knife (whatever you want) so that you “cut” an opening in the protective circle and then you can step out. Remember to wave your wand/finger/knife/whatever to “close” the circle once you leave so that no unwanted energy travels in and pollutes your circle while you are gone. Then repeat for when you want to go back into your circle! Also you may want to wear a ritual robe if you will be performing a ritual, but again, that is up to you.

Step #2:

Locate where the North, South, East, West are. You don’t know, I got you. On every Iphone you have a compass app that you can not delete off your shitty phone (I know, I tried). If you don’t have an compass app then you can download one! You want the “front” of your circle to be facing the north. So if you decide to set up an alter in your circle set it up so it is facing the north. You should put something to represent one of the  4 elements in each corner. 

North- Earth (I put an Agate crystal, because it’s an earth elemental stone or a small bowl of salt)

East- Air (I put an incense)

South- Fire (I put a candle)

West- Water (I put a small amount of water in a bowl)

Step #3:

Once you have visualized how big you want your circle to be it is time to cast it. You should start by mixing a little salt and water together in a bowl. Take the bowl and dip your fingers into it and sprinkle it around the edge of the circle. Start in the east and move clockwise. Remember you want to visualize a dome being formed around you. You want your circle to be completely free of negativity and you want it to protect you. Magick is all about intent, you have to focus really hard on pushing out the negative energy and focus on protection. 

Step #4:

Take the incense and walk around the circle again and rid the space of negativity. You want to start in the east and walk clockwise. 

Step #5:

Now you want to ask the guardians of the elements to watch over you and keep you safe. If you have a deity you want to watch over you this would be the time to invite them to the circle. You want to take your wand/finger/whatever you have and start in the east and say something like “Guardians of the watch tower of the east, element of air, I ask you guard me and protect me”. Then move to the South and say something like “Guardians of the watch tower of the south, element of fire, I ask you guard me and protect me”. Then move to the West and say something like “Guardians of the watch tower of the west, element of water, I ask you guard me and protect me”. Lastly, move to the North and say something like “Guardians of the watch tower of the north, element of earth, I ask you guard me and protect me”. Remember it does NOT have to be those exact words, remember to speak from the heart and just let it flow. If you are doing this when you don’t want others to hear you can just say it in your head. 

Now the circle has been cast thrice, this will kept any negative spirits out of your circle and at this point your circle should be free of negativity! Now I will go over the steps to open the circle when you are done. Remember that visualization is key, you want to see the circle opening up when you do this next step.

Step #6:

To open the circle you want to move counter-clockwise. Start in the North and hold up you wand/finger/whatever and say something like “I thank the guardians of the watchtower of the north, element of earth, and bid you farewell”. I like to draw a pentacle in the air with my wand as I do this. Then move to West and say something like  “I thank the guardians of the watchtower of the west, element of water, and bid you farewell”. Next move to the South and say something like  “I thank the guardians of the watchtower of the south, element of fire, and bid you farewell”. Lastly move to the East and say something like  “I thank the guardians of the watchtower of the east, element of air, and bid you farewell”. Then that’s it, the circle is open and you can freely go about your business. Again, I feel I have to repeat myself but it does not have to be those exact words. This is just what I do, everyone is different.
