i can just picture deku and bakugou giving each other the "oh we're so gonna talk about that in the debrief later" side eye when they're at the todoroki house and someone says something awkward and totally not appropriate for guests

thinkin’ about what katsuki said here:
Tumblr media
despite the fact that he thought about “sentimental shit” a lot during the final war, he isn’t being hypocritical when he says this to izuku. this is actually a huge example of how well katsuki knows izuku.
katsuki knows how (recklessly) selfless izuku is and how much of a bleeding heart he has. he also knows how irrational izuku can act when he’s “thinking that sentimental shit.”
katsuki’s words above aren’t coming from a place of mutual understanding. he stays surprisingly calm and regulated when thinking about that sentimental shit. here’s him facing off against history’s worst villain yet thinking about his past with izuku.
Tumblr media
this isn’t “getting distracted by in battle will make you lose.” that’s just a general piece of advice. this is “i know that you tend to lose control of yourself when you’re emotional. try not to think about your trauma, or you’ll die.”
katsuki knows these things about izuku and gave him genuine advice that pertains specifically to him. through katsuki’s eyes? that’s love.

Definitely not sorry to say this but Katsuki is such a sassy person like look at the pose he is literally in it literally gives off ‘Bitch what the hell is wrong with you?’ The side stare, the attitude energy, the hand on the hip. He is giving everything and leaving no crumbs

(Ch. 336)
You know, this panel has always made me a little curious. Every other time we saw Izuku sparring with Katsuki (before the war started at least), he’d use blackwhip to defend himself, hence ‘catch-a-kacchan’ so I found it weird how Izuku didn’t even try to grab Katsuki. For like 100 chapters prior to this, he used blackwhip for everything and would eventually just leave it out incase he needed it quickly kinda like how Hawks utilized his feathers (when he had them) so I kinda just made a mental note about how weird it was that Izuku chose to evade instead of defend when he easily could’ve.
I also found it weird how quickly Izuku wanted to change the topic along with the distress on his face. I thought it was just a cheap and ooc way of explaining Todoroki’s new power quickly but, since it’s now confirmed that Izuku has PTSD about Katsuki’s sacrifice, what if Katsuki’s cluster move triggers that trauma response too?
The next time we see cluster used with Izuku present, Izuku actually does respond with blackwhip.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Ch. 404)
He doesn’t use it in defense though, he uses it in almost possessive way by securing their hands together with it. But also, he doesn’t speak for this entire chapter. It could be explained away by the side effect of using gearshift and him not being able to breath but before now, he’s been more focused while in distress and was also speaking just fine before. Though, in these panels, and through the entire chapter, he seems almost delirious and in shock. He’s not even reacting to the lack of oxygen anymore.
Tumblr media
He even starts ignoring Shigaraki in these moments. He’s stunned and mesmerized but now I’m starting to question whether he’s amazed or scared out of his mind for what might happen. With that uncertainty, all that I can say confidently is that he’s distracted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Season 7 ep. 4)
Arguably after chapter 404, he stops thinking straight and, honestly, gets a little sloppy. A few chapters after this, is when gets danger sense stolen and starts getting truly injured. He makes the decision to give away OFA and loses his arms. He reverts right back into his “I don’t care what happens to me” mentality that his class has been trying to get him to grow out of for a while.
He wasn’t mentally prepared for something to go wrong in this fight. He wasn’t mentally prepared to be pulled away, leaving Katsuki with Shigaraki. I thought it was just iffy writing that he’d mentally regress after Katsuki woke up instead of before but, it honestly makes a lot more sense now. He cared about what happened to himself because he needed to stay alive to ensure Katsuki’s revival. Once Katsuki woke up and he watched him fight AFO, he started being reckless again. He went back to viewing himself as nothing but a vessel for OFA because he believes OFA is the only thing that can beat AFO, hence why he trusted the vestiges when they said “we can fight him from the inside” (which I think was a silly decision. It’s noble in theory but it amounted to nothing because Izuku can’t win in this regressive state of self sacrifice anymore. Or at least, he shouldn’t since it’s such a big part of his arc.).
And now, with the most recent chapter with most of his classmates present it seems like he’s regretting that decision because he’s being reminded that people care about him. They showed up to support him regardless of already being hurt because he can’t win on his own. Eri mutilated herself to help him and if that doesn’t tell him that fighting without the intent of not dying is stupid, idk what will.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Ch. 421)
He was about to just throw himself back into the fight with the same mindset as before if Aizawa didn’t stop him. He looks frustrated because he realizes the weight of what he’s been doing and how looking up to AM and the previous vestiges shouldn’t be his role models right now considering all of their fates. He’d just be continuing OFAs curse like Katsuki’s been worried about for a hundred something chapters.
In conclusion, this post was very unfocused but I can’t wait to see Izuku kick ass and for Katsuki to show back up because with the impact he’s had on Izuku, I DESPERATELY need them to talk. Most of this post may have very well been a stretch but, let me be delusional please.

Cannot express enough how much more romantic that scene in season 7 is than chapter 342 ever was like what happened. What are we doing. What.
Like I loved the 342 chapter because it foreshadows Izuku actively trying to help Shigaraki, not because he’s guilty or feels he needs to, but because he actively wants to do so. Ntm how much that whole scene foreshadows togachako so nicely and honestly? How much it puts into perspective how uncaring Ochako is to her romantic feelings for him. She’s so much more focused on toga, saving her, and her heroic career than her crush on a boy. Like if horikoshi was going to “make them canon” he would’ve done it then, but he didn’t.
Hell he would’ve done it when toga kidnapped him through the portal during the big fight. Toga exposes his feelings, he’s surprised but stands by Ochako’s side, they say that they have to make it out the war together, and that izuku will be waiting for her. But yk, tsuyu decided they didn’t have time for romance. So. What then.
So for those reasons I’m like. Actively praying on my hands and knees that they don’t completely ommit my girl and her moment (because let’s be honest 342 was never about Izuku. It’s about Ochako and her development as a character), but I do really enjoy that it feels like bones has given Katsuki a chance, and seen him for what he is… the real love interest. Thank you bones for doing this right, for the first time since probably season 3.

(For those who are confused what chapter I’m talking about since I’m referring to it by number lol)

What the hell!? I wake up and see this!!?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Izuku is traumatized by seeing Katsuki coming towards him because of the first war. He views blackwhip’s tendrils as AFO red and black tendrils and
Tumblr media
Izuku can’t use blackwhip on/towards Katsuki because it scares him to death. He’s pausing mid fight, he’s gettting distracted because he remembers Katsuki’s getting hurt due to his actions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Izuku would never lay a single finger in that way towards Katsuki. Because Izuku genuinely can not live in a world without Katsuki. This is Izuku’s literal face, thanks to trauma, that he can’t live without Katsuki. Even though it’s just training between them two knowing that neither one of them will get hurt Izuku just can’t bring himself to do anything that could cause 100% harm towards Katsuki
Tumblr media
And this trauma is so bad because for Katsuki to ask “What’s distracting you?” is him realizing that something is definitely wrong with Izuku. Katsuki continues talking but right in this scene Izuku isn’t even paying attention to what Katsuki is saying because all Izuku is thinking about is the memory of Katsuki getting stabbed
Tumblr media
Izuku’s eyes literally scream ‘You are the one distracting me.’ Izuku doesn’t look upset nor annoyed to himself if anything he looks sadden and full of fear.

Filler episodes like this show the take that a director has on certain characters and relationships,so it could be setting it up for, that having in mind the fact Horikoshi shared the ending with Keji Magasaki, the head director of MHA.
As for unnecessary deku-ochako moments, the same could be said for Katsuki and Izuku. I mean, these fairly recent scenes right here didn't have to exist for any reason if Katsuki and Izuku were just rivals and friends that is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Shigaraki is talking about Katsuki's dead body in the right panel)
The Deku-Ochako scenes wouldn't be for naught actually! It helped Ochako discover who she wanted to be as a hero, and her feelings on hero society as a whole. (Not like they probably care about all of that well written development anyways).
But,I also agree that Hori didn't have all the romantic relationships decided at the beginning, and that's just fine! (Since that isn't what the story is about at the end of the day,but it does play a huge factor into the themes of it depending on who ends with who) Though,as we've seen with Katsuki, whom he almost didn't do his big character arc for,he probably decided around volume 6 (maybe even volume 2 if we really wanna make a stretch!) he wanted to change the direction of the relationships and characters,so that's where I believe he started doing bkdk/dkbk for real. Especially considering what happens in volumes 7-14.
The whole kidnapping arc,Deku Vs Kacchan part 2,and the final exam arc, these were extremely big developments on there relationship and their feelings for each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thing that makes me think it was around volume 6 is because that's when these panels take place,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we see that Izuku clearly admires Katsuki very very much, but I feel volume 2 can be seen as the beginning of this shift as well. Considering the fact that's when Katsuki opens up to Izuku for the first time, and Izuku seems to care very deeply for how Katsuki feels in that moment, even abandoning Ochako to see how he feels. Because Katsuki is very important to Izuku, and I don't think them being childhood friends is enough to explain this. (Again,Horikoshi himself said in Deku Vs Kacchan part 2 he planned to humanize Katsuki more,so if that was the beginning of Katsuki's redemption arc, then that could have been the beginning of bkdk/dkbk)
So,I feel these filler episodes could be seen as important for setting up the cannon romantic relationship between Katsuki and Izuku, since Horikoshi shared the ending with the head director, and may have even told him if there was going to be a cannon pair and who they were.
People saying we can't use this as BKDK proof because it's filler, but they like to use their filler scenes to say their pairing had been set up since the beginning is hilarious!! 😭 Yeah, I'm not ready to see Izuku finding Kacchan's body animated! 😭🥺
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is so funny, but the only way this pairing is happening this far in the story is if Hori makes a NaruHina move, sorry not sorry. 😒

Hi! Your answer about heroism generally and Izuku saving Katsuki in ch.1 got me thinking. Izuku really does have heart of hero, he really wants to help people - that's for sure. But if it was just someone else and not Katsuki in ch.1 - Izuku definitely wouldn't rush to help. He even said something like "sorry poor guy I can't help you, but someone will do, I hope" before he saw it was Katsuki. So, it was kinda selfish moment for him, as I see it. So I wonder - can this exact moment be considered pure image of heroism on Izuku's behalf?
The original post, for reference.
"So I wonder - can this exact moment be considered pure image of heroism on Izuku's behalf?"
Yes it can, but it's because I disagree with your interpretation of the scene.
I am aware that there exists a certain subsection of the fandom who view the scene as you describe, and I have no problems with analyzing the question of what's going on in this scene or with crafting a what-if exploration of this scene in fanfic. That's fun shit. I just ultimately don't think that is what's going on here at all.
First, we have Izuku acknowledge that he's used to being a spectator. He's never run out to save anyone before.
Tumblr media
This is an important acknowledgement because it sets up the general behavior of hero society bystanders. The same bystander from chapter 1 reappears in chapter 325 to explain it:
Tumblr media
Chapter 1 then establishes for Izuku to know that the heroes aren't doing anything about the situation. Izuku is even made to empathize with the victim as he just experienced the same thing earlier that day:
Tumblr media
Izuku ends up feeling responsible for the victim's pain, and he falls into the same mental trap the bystanders and even the heroes on the scene do: "We need someone with the right quirk."
Tumblr media
"Someone will come to save you soon..." "A hero is bound to come..." Izuku knows the victim needs to be saved and acknowledges that no one currently there is doing anything to help the victim.
And then this happens.
Tumblr media
There are many things here that could be triggering Izuku. One interpretation certainly could be that Izuku is prompted to act when he sees that the victim is Katsuki.
The problem with that is: we're actually told what triggers Izuku here.
Tumblr media
There are multiple potential triggers. The victim being "Kacchan" is one of the possibilities. But the narrator ultimately tells us what was the factor that sprung Izuku into action "at that moment."
"You looked like you needed saving."
The thing that spurred Izuku to act was not seeing Katsuki; it was seeing Katsuki's face asking him for help.
Izuku knows there's a person suffering at the hands of a villain, a suffering Izuku is familiar with, a villain Izuku is responsible for helping escape All Might. Izuku is used to being a spectator who watches the heroes save the day, but there are no heroes here saving anyone. For the first time, he's at the scene of a villain attack, and the victim has to look around and ask someone, anyone for help. For the first time, the victim looks at Izuku and asks him for help.
"But if it was just someone else and not Katsuki in ch.1 - Izuku definitely wouldn't rush to help."
So I disagree with your above statement. I think if any other person would have looked to Izuku for help in that situation, Izuku would have rushed out to help. I don't think he's only a hero for Katsuki's sake.
However, I do believe there are other important reasons Katsuki is the victim here.
It demonstrates that any bad blood between Izuku and Katsuki is inconsequential to Izuku's impulse to save Katsuki. Izuku does care about Katsuki.
Likewise, the fact that their bad blood doesn't affect Izuku in this case does demonstrate Izuku's heroic qualities. His personal life does not get in the way of his heroism.
Most importantly, it shows that Katsuki admires Izuku.
I'm honestly not fond of the "(selfish) Izuku only saves Katsuki because he loves him, it's got nothing to do with his heroism" take because it betrays a bias. The notion that Izuku is selfish and cares only about Katsuki is a perspective that elevates Izuku's feelings at the expense of Katsuki's. This scene is not about how much Izuku cares about Katsuki; it's about Katsuki's feelings for Izuku.
For the entire chapter, most every character has made fun of Izuku for his dream of being a hero. They don't take him seriously. They think he's a joke.
Katsuki, consistently, does take Izuku's dream seriously. He sees Izuku as a legitimate threat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also learn later why Katsuki takes Izuku seriously. Despite Izuku's deficiencies, Katsuki has always seen something in Izuku that the rest of society misses. He sees the makings of a true hero, which causes Katsuki to doubt himself. He doubts whether or not he can measure up to Izuku in the same regard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(He knows exactly what Izuku can do.)
Tumblr media
Katsuki also ends up exposed and victimized by the way society is. Society sees people as just their quirks. That's how the heroes who fail to save him behave. That's even how the villain behaves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note that in this final picture, Katsuki looks away from the heroes to focus on Izuku.
On some level, Katsuki knows what real heroism is, which is what makes him so self-conscious and leads him to mistreat Izuku. When he is stuck and dying, none of the heroes even try to help him. Katsuki finds the one person in the area who would actually do something: Izuku. And so he pleads for Izuku's help with his eyes.
Tumblr media
It's no mistake that All Might describes one of Katsuki's feelings towards Izuku as "awe."
Tumblr media
He's just been terrible at expressing his awe because of his self-doubt.
Tumblr media
Despite his rejection of Izuku, Katsuki is regularly shown to be in awe of him throughout high school. He's felt awe for Izuku ever since they were little kids. That's what makes him so uncomfortable. He really can't wrap his head around Izuku for most of their lives, which makes Katsuki himself feel inferior. But in chapter 1, in his moment of desperation, he looks to Izuku for help. He acknowledges Izuku's heroism only in his hour of need.
So when it comes to how I interpret chapter 1, I think the above distinctions are important to make. I don't mean to rain on any bakudeku parades. Seriously, if you like the other interpretation, you do you. But to me, THIS interpretation is the more bakudeku one. The reason Izuku's and Katsuki's destinies are so intertwined is because of their acknowledgement of each other's heroic traits, specifically the ones the other feels they are lacking. That's what makes them two halves of a whole. You can't erase Izuku's heroic traits, or else there is nothing for Katsuki to admire. There's no one otherwise who sticks out in the hero-corrupted society that Katsuki feels he can count on for help. Their deep relationship comes from their mutual admiration of each other. Chapter 1 is Izuku's heroic moment, and you have to have it preserved if you want Katsuki's feelings for Izuku to make sense.
That's my two cents.
