Why did we, as a society, start referring to boats as 'she'?

Also, can we just start head-canoning the pronouns of modes of transport? Or is that only acceptable if you're a professional?

E.g: Only a train conductor can say if you call trains 'he', 'she', 'they', 'it', etc
