Season 6: The Newlywed Era 

All the layers from the previous seasons finally melded together and resulted in Rick and Michonne’s beautiful romance being born in Season 6. While their “newlywed era” didn’t technically occur until 6B, there were still several moments that showed how much they cared about each other in the episodes leading up to their unforgettable canon ep. 

The way Michonne could always get Rick to hear her out, especially about the Alexandrians, the way they swiftly and seamlessly worked together to get Carl to the infirmary and to take down those walkers in No Way Out, Michonne helping Rick with his poncho while he’s in a distressed state, Rick making sure to somehow fulfill Michonne’s toothpaste request - those final pre-canon moments and more in s6 made it perfectly clear why they would so naturally transition into being a couple. 

And then it happened. And lives were changed. #NotEvenExaggerating😇. Rick and Michonne finally getting together in 6.10 was and will always be glorious. And while the world went right back to screaming at them literally before they could even wake up from that night, causing them to not get much downtime to just be, their time as a couple in 6B still gave me newlywed vibes. Especially when they were all cuddled up in East. But even better was how much didn’t feel new in their official couple era. Rick agreeing when Michonne calls shots, Michonne checking whoever came for her man - so much of their dynamic as an official couple was their dynamic before too because they had been a couple for longer than they realized. But the married-and-we-know-it-now vibe looks great on them. Opening their hearts to each other so fully is honestly one of the strongest things these two strong characters did. Because as Rick and Abe discussed, it’s a scary thing to love someone so strongly, in that world especially. 

But thank goodness Rick and Michonne had the courage to do so because it produced an outstanding love story that only got stronger. 🥳

Season 7: The Soulmate Era 

It’s only fitting on 7/12 to talk about Rick and Michonne’s Season 7 era. 🤗 While s7 gets a fair share of critique, when it comes to the Richonne content specifically, this is one of my favorite eras of theirs. Ooh it’s some of their best stuff.  

Now of course every Rick and Michonne era is a soulmate era but Season 7 is where their soulmate connection is loud and clear on another level. And what’s nice too is normally Rick and Michonne get most of their really good focus in the second half of seasons but I feel like s7 gave their relationship really great moments in both halves so of course the greedy part of me is going to love it. But greedy or not, it’s undeniable that Season 7 makes it clear how perfect Rick and Michonne are for each other and how genuinely special their love is. 

From the way they still manage to have a brief moment of connection during one of the worst days of all time in that line-up, their immense vulnerability and determination to remain connected even when they don’t see eye to eye after Negan’s first visit, the greatest kiss of life, and then when they beautifully agree to fight back against the Saviors knowing the only way they want to proceed is together - me and you. Just…perfection. And that’s only 7A. Once Rick and Michonne agree they only want to go forward together, they’re by each other's side through so much in 7B and seem so much happier because of it. Going to new communities, mowing down hordes in cars, defeating armored walkers, and making deals with oddballs, they operate as one through it all.

And let me just take a moment for 7.12. What a dream. That love letter ep to Richonne is solid gold. And as sweet and fun as that ep is, it’s also significant in giving insight into the characters and their love. But more on the many great scenes from Say Yes another time. For now, I’ll just say that their honeymoon ep is everything and further cemented the two as soulmates (and to this day whenever I see the clock at 7:12 my first thought is Say Yes #ForeverEtchedInMyBrain). Also, the way they both empty upon thinking they lost each other at different points this season and then visibly come back to life when learning the other is still alive - It just doesn’t get any clearer that what they found with each other is the love of their life, their other half, their soulmate. 

Season 7 was Rick and Michonne’s first full season as a couple and it more than delivered in confirming these two were truly meant to be in every possible way. 🤩

Reveling in Richonne

#52: The Stepping In (7x9)

Alright, so 7B returned with “Rock In The Road” and didn’t wait long before giving us more Richonne goodness.

After the teaser with Father G, the show returns with Gregory pacing and rambling and I love that the first person that’s revealed in the room is none other than our homegirl, Michonne. Like I love that she’s the first TF member that we see. 👌🏽👸

The camera pans away from Gregory and you see Michonne first and then I love that as it pans out further you see Rick right next to her and Carl behind them. Grimes 2.0 is in the building y'all! 🙌🏾 🏾

This scene, and episode, let me know that Rick and Michonne truly were going to be right by each other’s side in everything they did. Like not just figuratively but literally right by each other’s side from here on out.

The reveal of Rick and Michonne in that room just gave off some real power couple vibes. They watch on as Gregory paces and rambles and it’s clear everyone in that room is getting fed up with Gregory and his extra self. 

(Sidenote: As sweet as it was to see TF all unite in the mid-season finale, I also remember watching them walk towards that manor and thinking “Y’all know that weasel, Gregory, isn’t going to be interested in your newfound will to fight, right?” 😂 So like it was a hopeful end to 7A but I also knew they were about to hit a wall real quick. And here we are, in this 7x9 scene, hitting said wall. 🙈)

It’s funny that you can see Rick get more and more agitated as Gregory speaks, but Michonne stays looking cool, calm, and collected, even though she too thinks Gregory is a mess. It makes sense that Rick and Gregory butt heads because, if you think about it, Gregory is literally the antonym of Rick Grimes lol. Like polar opposites. 

So Rick walks up to Gregory and reminds him that they already started this fight. Gregory tries to remove himself from the equation so Rick gets a little more heated when he says “We did”. It’s clear that Rick is so done with Gregory and he feels like ain’t nobody got time for this rn.

Rick is trying to keep his cool as he communicates that being under the Saviors is no longer something they should just sit and take. But see that’s what ole’ Greg does best; Sit and take. 

It’s hilarious that when Gregory calls Maggie “Margaret”, you literally see Rick think, “This fool is an idiot.” Like that’s a direct quote from Rick’s mind in that moment lol. 😂  

I feel like when Gregory’s pompous self sings “Rhetorical” that’s kind of the last straw for Rick. Like Gregory has officially tried it to capacity with his extra-ness and theatrics and Rick’s done lol. So Rick aggressively jumps in to ask Gregory if they’d be better off without the Saviors. Yes or no?

This is a yes or no question cuz he is done with Gregory’s blabbing lol. Rick is understandably very irritated with Gregory’s nonchalant cowardice and he’s letting his irritation get the best of him. Rick seems to be slipping into his “bite yo neck” side but before he goes that route…the wife steps in.

I adore that Michonne steps in and knows when her man needs someone to help him out. Like a true wife, Michonne sees that her husband is starting to let his irritation and frustration takeover so she comes to his rescue and helps try to get his point across in a more gently assertive way. 

I love that you actually visibly see Michonne take note of Rick’s heated tone. Like it’s only upon hearing Rick raise his voice that Michonne finally uncrosses her arms, cuz she knows now this situation calls for the other half of Richonne lol. Like Rick tried his approach and not it’s her turn. Cuz I know Michonne knew Rick was this close to mollywhopping this man. 😂  

I love that you see Michonne gently tap Gregory’s desk like she’s tagging in for this Richonne tag team.

And she steps in and calmly says “So what will you do to fix the problem?” I love how gentle and diplomatic Michonne can be while still being strong and nothing to play with. 

Like she’s trying to help Gregory reflect on how he can contribute and take some action but unfortunately this isn’t an adult she’s talking to, he’s just a child with gray hair lol, so of course Gregory doesn’t even respond well to the queen’s approach either. 

I love the Grimes 2.0 diagonal that’s created in the frame when Michonne steps in. 

Like that’s one strong family unit right there. 🙌🏾 🏾 And I appreciate that Rick steps back to let Michonne step in. I’m here for it.

Like Rick happily lets her takeover. You can tell he is so appreciative to have someone co-lead with him and you know he’s like “Alright, Greg, if you won’t hear me out, you have to at least listen to Michonne cuz she’s a 👸🏾” Lol. You can see Rick get a much needed opportunity to cool off as she speaks. And, again, their teamwork shines through so organically.

I love that Rick stands behind Michonne to let her do her thing. Like this is Rick when Michonne steps in…

Lol. He is in full support of her taking charge, just like she is in full support of him.

It’s funny that you can see Michonne sort of laugh and turn away when Gregory starts doing that petty “I’m pretending you aren’t here” thing. Like this moment is frustrating but it’s also so ridiculous that Michonne can’t help but find it a little amusing lol. And then, before TF walk out, Michonne gives one last stare down to Gregory in order to let him kindly know that he’s a full blown mess. 

This scene was significant because it’s proof that Michonne is going to step up and speak her mind for her man. Like she both literally and figuratively stepped up in this moment cuz she’s in tune with her man. 

Sh knew if Rick kept talking he’d only get more frustrated and so she both sort of saves Rick from himself while still fully supporting him and his stance by reiterating their point to Gregory. 

Michonne’s basically like, “Regardless of how it’s being conveyed rn, my man is still right that there’s a problem and it needs fixing. And we’re going to fix this with or without you, Greg.” 

As Greg dismissed them I was thinking, “Bruh, you know you didn’t really shut anything down just now? Cuz if Rick and Michonne are ready to fight then the revolution has already begun…and you’re late.” 😂

I love how this scene is Michonne showing Rick she meant what she said in 7x8. She was not kidding when she told him they’d do this together. Like she’s not just leaving it up to him to debate with Gregory, she’s gonna walk up, tag in, and drop some knowledge as well. 🙌🏾 

Rick’s willingness to let Michonne step in, reminds us that just cuz Rick stepped up to lead all those seasons ago, doesn’t mean he won’t welcome some assistance. 

And it’s clear Rick feels he has the best co-leader a guy could ask for. 👌��👸

#66: The “What’s That Smile?” (7x12)

So this was yet another scene that was gold. Like you can’t not smile when you see how much Rick and Michonne can’t not smile in this moment. 😁

I really think 7x12 holds the record for most smiling and laughing in a TWD episode and, of course, Rick and Michonne together would be the ones to bring that to an episode. 😊

Like I appreciate that a storyline with just the two of them has so much lighthearted joy in it, cuz that’s what they bring out of each other.

And I adore that as grown and mature as their relationship is, there’s also an adorable amount of flirtation and playfulness. And we get to see that firsthand in this scene.

So this moment starts with them walking in the woods and you can hear Rick ask “What is it? What’s that smile?” 

I love this. And I love that, because Rick always pays close attention to her, of course he noticed that she’s smiling. And of course he cares to “figure out” why. 

It’s cute that Michonne is smiling and that she can’t help but let the happiness she feels inside, reflect outwardly. Like I love that, in this scene and throughout most of the episode, Michonne is so visibly glowy and happy.

And I appreciate the staging as they walk through the woods cuz it’s sweet that we see Michonne walking slightly ahead and Rick following her, like Toto. 😋 Like I love that he’s following after her cuz it just gives such a visual representation of her being his leader (and them being magnets). And It’s adorable that they literally seem like they’ve both been on a high this whole trip. 

This moment also slightly reminded me of this scene…

Like in both scenes they’re walking in the woods and striking up this casual conversation and yet the attraction and playfulness of it is so evident. Plus, just that sweet tone of voice that they both reserve for each other is so great and we hear that a lot in 7x12. 

So, as Rick tries to “figure out” why Michonne’s smiling, he mentions how it’s been a couple days and they’ve pretty much found nothing too significant, so that can’t be the reason she’s smiling. It’s just really funny that he’s saying all this cuz Homeboy knows good and well why she’s happy rn. 😂 I was like, “Rick, you already know, but I’ll tell you why your girl’s smiling…

Lol I love the playfulness of him asking her this when he def already knows. And he’s even listing off reasons that it can’t be since he knows full well what the answer is. She’s smiling for the same reason he’s smiling. 

And, in another moment of repeating words back to each other, Michonne says, “Pretty much” and then still smiling she moves towards him and tells him, “We’re fighting the fight. It’s better.” which I’m like okay that too lol. But she’s also smiling cuz they’re together and they’re soul mates and their love has free rein on this trip. 🙌🏾

Being that they’re both such fighters by nature it makes sense for her to say this is better cuz they’re doing what they’re meant to be doing. They’re no longer fighting who they are as people and instead they’re fighting for their lives back. And she’s not just saying it’s better, you can visibly see that it’s better.

Like I’ve never seen them this light before. They are a whole nother level of refreshed and happy rn. And it’s nice that they both look less weighed down and more cheerful, even with Negan still in the picture.

That’s significant cuz it just shows how much power Negan loses when R&M are together. And I love that she’s always that voice in Rick’s ear to remind him that what they’re doing is better and the right thing to do.

And then they stay smiling after she says this and it’s just the most precious thing, y’all. ☺️ Cuz they both always become this emoji 😍 when they look at each other.

It’s cute that they’re both the reason the other is smiling more. And it’s cute that they know this too. Like they know they’re the reason they smile more and why they’re happier than they’ve ever been.

Michonne’s so happy that she and her man are out here really making their lives mean something and choosing to fight back. And Rick is so happy…cuz she’s so happy lol. 😋 Thinking about it, this is kind of the first time Rick and Michonne have been completely alone in a long while. They are a mom and dad to not just their kids but pretty much to all of ASZ, so they probably have people around them and dependent on them all the time. (Even though we’ve seen that no matter how chaotic things get, they make sure to make time for each other. Like even with the Kiss of Life, Carl was still right in that other room lol. 😋) But, for 7x12, they get time completely to themselves and so you can see them not being mom and dad, or ASZ’s leaders, but just Rick and Michonne the lovebirds and soul mates. 🙌🏾 Like while they are out on this trip that’s all they have to be and I was here for it. They def deserved this time to just be with each other and relish in their new relationship status. I always forget that in the show’s time they’ve been together for shorter than it feels to us.

So this really is like their first chance to have any alone time since they took the relationship to the next level and it’s clearly been the time of their lives. And I love that this scene gives us insight into just their daily little playful interactions.

I think it’s super sweet that with only having two guns, a dented can of beans, and some football jerseys, R&M still feel so content and smiley and genuinely happy, cuz they have the most important thing which is each other, and that makes everything better. 👌🏽☺️

#80: The Flirting (7x12)

Now, Rick and Michonne are good at so many things. Two things they’ve gotten especially good at are killing walkers and flirting with one another. And here we get to see both of these things combined. 🎉😋

So because nothing is ruining their fun, R&M make it out of the car fairly easily. And it’s super subtle but it looks like Rick leans down to help Michonne out of the car cuz that’s what real ones do.👌🏽 And then they hop out literally just kicking away at walkers like pests lol.

(Side note: Someone pointed out how it looks like Rick dabs when he jumps off the car and now I can’t unsee it 🙈😂)

Seeing the walkers gather around them, Michonne says, “We’ll do it here” and Rick says, “Yeah” and I will always love and take note of these little moments where they verbally validate each other like this. Like it’s so small but it’s so great at the same time cuz it just emphasizes how like-minded they are and how often they’re in agreement.

As they’re slaying walkers, they realize the gates not going to hold so they have to lead them somewhere else. And as they run, they again operate in unison without even having to verbally communicate. Like they just tag team and knock down that high striker and keep it moving cuz they’re just a unit like that.

And then they face this herd of walkers looking like a King and Queen staring at some peasants’ lol. 😋 They talk out a strategy and it literally feels like they think like one. They’re so easily on the same page. And Rick suggests that Michonne take the slide and he take the ferris wheel. And then he playfully offers, “Or we could just go”.

First; Rick is an adorably extra man.😂 Like as he says this they are facing a herd of walkers, those things are lethal…but then again so is he and his wife. 😋

So he’s unbothered and still finds time, even in this situation, to be flirty and joke with her. All the way here for it. 👏🏽

It’s so casual like “We could stay or we could go, whatever is fine.” Plus, low key he’s probably thinking if they just go that might mean they have to stay out a little longer and you know how Rick feels about that lol.😉

And then Michonne has this playful surprise when she asks, “You want to go?” And I love this. Like I love when they’re just talking and joking with each other as people.

I know people can probably stereotype shippers as people who want all this over the top romance all the time but honestly I think we get our entire life from casual moments like this just as much. 

Like low key even these quick casual exchanges between them can produce this response from me…

Cuz there’s so much gold in the moments when they’re just being together like best friends since the best, healthiest, and most authentic romantic relationships are built on friendships anyway. 💯

Also it’s hilarious cuz Michonne phrases it as “you want to go” since she always hears the true subtext in things. And I just love that she asks in a way that’s like she knows Homeboy must be playing around, and also clearly feeling like they done did too much to just leave now. 😂

And then Rick tells her, “Nah. We can do this.” 😋 Now on paper it might sound like he said that as some positive speech of “We got this!” But I love that it’s actually said so nonchalant like “Eh we’re here and this ain’t no thang to us so we can just do this.”

I really appreciate that Rick definitely relishes the fact that the two of them are such an unstoppable unit and that they are both so capable. I had always got that vibe from him and I feel like this scene confirmed it. I feel like Rick enjoys seeing them take action together cuz it just further solidifies that this is different and this is special. 

And then Michonne adorably says in a playful “duh” tone, “Yeah I know we can.” 😋Of course she knows they can. This is “We can find a way” Michonne lol.

She def relishes that they’re an unstoppable unit as well. And you already know I love when they always refer to each other as “we” so I just love them acknowledging they’re a team and that they know they can tag team this situation.

I adore the way they’re talking to each other in this and that they are skilled in this quick-witted flirtiness that they have going on. They’re just having so much fun together and it’s like they’re teenagers and an old married couple all at the same time. Again, that young and grown love they have is a thing of beauty. 🙌🏾

I love that R&M both know the power of Richonne and that they really can do anything together. Like, yes, with each other they are able to just be human beings but also, let’s be real, Rick is also aware that he is with the Michonne and Michonne is aware she is with Rick to the Grimes. 👑😊

So it makes sense when they take time out to acknowledge and admire how each one contributes to making this an iconic power couple. Like joking about staying or leaving while you face a herd of walkers is how warriors flirt and I’m here for it. 😋👌🏽

This was such a beyond cute moment and I love that this is their natural dynamic. It’s such a quick moment and yet it’s still so great and life-giving and further proof that their banter is top tier. 👏🏽😊
