❛ i just really hate odysseus. seemed like a pompous asshole to me. ❜

as someone who wanted to double major in history & mythology you’d think bellamy’s reasoning would be less… shallow but, it wasn’t. but to be fair it was a lot harder to enjoy a book when you hated the fucking protagonist.

he can’t help the puzzled expression as the man’s words process through his mind. he’d been expecting something...more ---------just more. the corners of his mouth twitch up into a smile, people always surprised him. his brother hal would say it’s because he was always thinking WAY too much, and then call him a dork. ❛ aren’t all heroes a little pompous though? they’re all cover boys for being irritatingly grand and self important. I think that’s why I tend to enjoy the anti-heroes, those with greatness thrust upon them. & not the dark modern version either. like early spiderman or scooby and shaggy. ❜

❛ don’t worry about it. you aren’t. ❜ not really.

or, at least, there’s been a lot more people that were more in the way than him. he’s just some kid that got caught up in a book ( instead of screeching infuriating shit at another friend across the table DESPITE the whole universal library rule of quiet ) & bellamy could sympathize with that. instead, of saying that though he just starts vacuuming around him, pausing to pick up trash here & there.

❛ unpopular opinion but the iliad is better– by the way. ❜

❛ oh yeah? ❜ he can barely hear the words over the sound of the vacuum, but he pieces together what the man said. the puzzle of barely moving lips distracting his mind from the feeling of abandonment beginning to take root. ❛ so you’re team achilles and not team aeneas then? or is it the whole futility of war message? ❜ ben gestures to the book in his hand, trying to be heard over the noise of the vacuum without yelling at the guy. ❛ dad likes this one. I always thought it sort of glorified a type of manifest destiny I find troublesome. like it’s okay to take over a country and destroy indigenous cultures because it’s what you’re MEANT to do. ❜

usually he doesn’t have patience for kids staying late at the library being in his way when he’s trying to clean. but he wasn’t have the worst day so when the boy with his head in a book & ear buds in his ears doesn’t notice bellamy, the older male nudges him with his foot instead of pushing past.

❛ hey, yeah, yeah ----sure, no problem, ❜ ben was STUMBLING over his words as his thoughts clicked into place, traveling forward in time a few hundred years from the world painted on the pages of the book in his hands. the chair SCRAPED across the floor and a blush c r e p t up his neck as his eyes darted around to make sure he hadn’t bothered the other patrons of the library. the empty space surrounding him, half covered in shadow, spoke to the hour. was it that late already? his dad had to be done grading papers...which meant his dad had once again forgotten he was waiting for him. he tries not to let his expression mirror the empty feeling in his chest. ❛ sorry about being in the way. ❜

And even if we did, they would have probably gone off by now.
